A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT OF JAZZWITH JULIE EIGENBERG & YARON GERSHOVSKY & SPECIAL GUEST ANDRES LAPRIDA JULY 1, 8PM & 10:30PM

Join us for a night of great jazz with vo-calist extraordinaire Julie Eigenberg ac-companied by Grammy® -Award winning pianist and composer Yaron Gershovsky, the musical director for the world-famous Manhattan Transfer. To gether with Boris Kozlov on Bass, & Benny Koonyevsky on percussion, they bring you Julie’s soulful interpretations with some swing-ing fun and jamming original songs. She co-wrote “Why Not!”, and Yaron Ger-shovsky did the arrangement, for which the Manhattan Transfer won the 1983 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal of a Group, on Atlantic Records. Together with Special Guest, World Guitar Master & Composer Andres Laprida, who has also published songs with Julie, they will explore new arrangements of familiar standards and Brazilian classics along with original songs from Julie’s Polystar Co. Japan, Ltd. recording, produced and written with David Spinozza.

Julie Eigenberg began her singing career in NYC, performing with such greats as George Duvivier, Vicki Sue Robinson, Moogy Klingman, the Brecker Bros., Leon Pendarvis, Anthony Jackson, and Will Lee, to name just a few.

She went on to record her album, Love is Starting Now, which was produced by David Spinozza. Julie is a soulful in-terpreter of classic Jazz standards and her own pop/Latin influenced genre or

songs. Her music comes from the heart and she sings with a confidence and style that has captured fans from around the world.

Yaron Gershovsky is widely recognized as an accomplished musician, whose long list of credits demonstrates versatil-ity and excellence as a Pianist/Keyboard-ist, Arranger, Composer and Producer. Yaron wrote two vocal arrangements for the group’s latest Christmas A Capella CD (one of them in collaboration with Janis Siegel). The Manhattan Transfer’s CD, The Symphony Sessions features Yaron on the piano, as well as his big band arrangement for: “All Heart”, dedi-cated to Ella Fitzgerald.

Andrés Laprida is a guitarist/composer from Argentina, who lives in New York, and has achieved a remarkable expo-sure through a wide range of assign-ments. His prolific work as a performer, composer, and producer keeps earning a highly enthusiastic response from mu-sicians, audience and critics. As a per-former, his international tours include his original compositions, as well as a large repertoire of classics from renowned Brazilian and American composers. n

Trumpeter/conguero Jerry González is well known for his years of experi-ence with jazz giants such as Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner and Jaco Pastorius and Latin music greats Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri. But it is as leader of “Jerry González and the Fort Apache Band” that his status as one of the music’s most innovative voices and the greatness of his artistic vision became widely recognized.

The legendary Fort Apache Band has been active for over three decades, with Jerry González on trumpet and congas, his brother Andy González on bass, Larry Willis on piano, Joe Ford on saxophone and Steve Berrios on drums. In 1989, the band recorded the groundbreaking Rumba Para Monk, named album of the year by the French Academie du Jazz. That year the group was voted the Word Beat Group of the Year in DownBeat’s 55th Annual Readers Poll. After that, they recorded Earth-dance (1991), Moliendo Cafe (1992) and the three Grammy nominated albums; Crossroads (1994), Pensa-tivo (1995) and Firedance (1996). In 1998, the ensemble swept the Latin jazz category at the New York Jazz Awards, winning both the Industry and Journalist Polls. In 1999, the group again swept the Critics and Readers Polls for Beyond Group of the Year in DownBeat Magazine.

In 2000, following Jerry and Fort Apache’s portrayal in the critically ac-claimed documentary Calle 54 by the Oscar awarded Spanish filmmaker Fernando Trueba, Jerry González moved to Spain. In Spain he became

one of the pioneers of the fusion be-tween Latin Jazz and flamenco, and collaborated with musicians such as Paco de Lucía, Chano Domínguez, Di-ego “El Cigala”, Niño Josele and the Spanish National Jazz Orchestra. In 2001, he recorded Jerry González y Los Piratas del Flamenco (2003), nominated to the Grammy Awards and the Latin Grammy Awards and given the Critics and Industry Awards in the

New York Jazz Awards. In recent years, González’s most consistent work has been as the leader of his Madrid based quartet “Jerry González y El Comando de la Clave”. Their self-titled album was nominated to the Latin Grammy Awards 2012 . n

The 9 piece band nor-mally features Freddie Hendrix, David Gibson, and Jason Marshall on horns, Joe Strasser, the general of the rhythm section on drums, along with Nickel on the mic and Victoria Cave on vocals. Pianist Manami Morita was born in Saitama, Japan in 1984. She received a scholarship to study at Berklee Col-lege of Music in 2005. By 2006, she moved to the U.S. and started her ca-reer at Berklee in Boston to search for her own music, based on jazz.

Manami has performed with acclaimed musicians such as Esperanza Spald-ing, Greg Hopkins, Mark Walker, Rosa Pasos, and Oscar Stagnaro. She has appeared at jazz festivals such as the Martha’s Vineyard Music Festival, Sa-lem Jazz Festival, Tokyo Jazz and the Rochester International Jazz Festival.

Joe Gransden has performed world-wide and released ten CDs under his own name. Renowned first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet, Grans-den’s singing voice has been com-pared to that of Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra.

Joe is from New York City and comes from a family full of musicians. Joe’s introduction to music came early on through his father, a gifted singer and pia-nist. His grandfather was a trumpeter of merit, playing professionally his whole life throughout New York. On his mother’s side was the piano virtuoso Carmen Ca-vallero.

Not long after high school, Joe was on the road as a sideman with the Tommy Dorsey Band and Glenn Miller Band. He has also per-formed as a sideman with Barry White, The Moody Blues, Kenny Rogers, The Temptations, Aretha Frank-lin and The Whispers. Even-tually moving to New York City, he performed with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Chico O’Farrill. Meanwhile, Joe formed his own group, which performed in Brook-lyn each week and included guitar-ist Joe Cohn and former Betty Carter bassist, Matt Hughes. The Joe Grans-den Trio’s growing legion of fans in both New York and recently in Atlanta has obviously taken note.

A widening schedule has found Joe performing at The Jazz Corner in Hil-ton Head, South Carolina, The Mu-seum of Art and Design in midtown Manhattan, Spivey Hall in Atlanta and Tehema Golf Club in Carmel, Califor-nia. Joe also just released his brand

new CD Close To My Heart, produced by saxophone great Kenny G. The CD is a collection of smooth jazz covers and originals written by Joe and Kenny. Joe has been performing with Kenny G and his band around the country for the past year or so.

Fellow musicians across the country hear a talented trumpet player whose ace in the hole is a well-developed

voice. But around Atlanta and New York Joe is also a well-respected hu-man being, and a nice guy who treats people fairly. He has always managed to keep every aspect of his career and life in balance. In this tempestuous de-cade, Joe’s lyricism is like a breath of fresh air. n

Mystical yet fiery, passionately roman-tic yet supremely cool – you hear those first few notes from that instantly rec-ognizable tenor, and know you’re in the unique musical world of Gato Barbieri. His career has covered virtually the entire jazz landscape, from free jazz with trumpeter Don Cherry and avant-garde in the mid-’60s, to film scoring and his ultimate embrace of Latin mu-sic throughout the ’70s and ’80s. Barbieri began playing tenor saxophone with his own band in the late ’50s and moved to Rome with his Italian-born first wife Michelle in 1962, where he began collaborating with Cherry. The two recorded albums for Blue Note: Complete Com-munion (1965) and Symphony for Improvisers (1966), both of which are considered classics of free group improvisation. He also collaborated with Steve Lacy, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, Stan-ley Clarke, Airto Moreira, Chico O’Farrell, and Lonnie Liston Smith during this period.

Barbieri recorded a handful of albums on the Flying Dutch-man label in the early ’70s and then signed with Impulse, where he recorded his classic Chapter Series: Latin America (1973), Hasta Siempre (1973), Viva Emiliano Zapata (1974), and Alive in New York (1975). While at Impulse, he also composed the Gram-my-winning score for the film Last Tango in Paris (1972) – an achieve-ment he parlayed into success as a film composer, scoring international films over the years in Europe, South America, and the U.S. By the mid-’70s, Barbieri’s coarse, wailing tone began to mellow, a change evident on his ’70s A&M recordings. However, early ’80s dates like the Live Gato … Para Los

Amigos (1984) saw the saxophonist re-claim a more intense, rock-influenced South American sound.

After years of limited musical activity due to the passing of his first wife (also his closest musical confidant and man-ager) and his own triple bypass sur-gery, Barbieri returned stronger than ever with the 1997 Columbia offering

Que Pasa, the fourth-highest-selling contemporary jazz album of that year. Since that reemergence, he has con-tinued to release albums, including The Shadow of the Cat (2002), which won Billboard’s prestigious 2003 Latin Jazz Album of the Year award and garnered a Grammy nomination, and New York Meeting (2010). n

Res is a powerful soul rock singer whose single, “They Say Vision”, was a Top 40 hit, with the remix going to number 1 on the dance charts. Other singles from her debut album, How I Do, include Golden Boys and Ice King, both which re-ceived radio play and struck a chord with music lovers from all walks of life. This album has paved the way for her cult following today.

Res’ live show is incredibly en-gaging and en-tertaining. Her dynamic vocals pull all of the attention to the stage. Audi-ences become awestruck of her energy and stage presence. Many of her fans profess that her live performance is one not to miss and that she often sounds better live than on her records. A Res performance can consist of a few different band configurations. She can do everything from a DJ set to an acoustic guitar for-mat and all the way to a full band.

Res completed work on her second al-bum (Black Girls Rock!) and planned for a 2006 release. After some label shakeups the album would ultimately be shelved and Res would eventually break away from her label. While fans were looking for Res and her follow up album, instead she popped up singing supporting vocals for Cee Lo Green of

Gnarls Barkley on his St. Elsewhere World Tour for the smash hit “Crazy”. Following the tour, Res decided to fol-low the path of an independent artist and released Black Girls Rock! all on her own. This decision was in direct

response to the overwhelming de-mand from fans thru her social media touch points. n

Considered by many to be the greatest American composer in history, Duke Ellington and his music influenced mil-lions of people over the course of his 50-year career. Thanks to a body of work that transcends boundaries and renews itself through every generation of fans and music lovers, his legacy continues to live on and will endure for generations to come.

Ellington described those who im-pressed him as “beyond category.” Because of the unmatched artistic heights to which he soared, no artist deserves this description more than El-lington himself. He is best remembered for the over 3,000 songs that he com-posed during his lifetime – titles like “It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Mood Indigo,” “Solitude,” “In a Mellow Tone,” and “Satin Doll.” When asked what inspired him to write, he replied, “My men and my race are the inspiration of my work. I try to catch the character and mood and feeling of my people.” Ellington’s popular compositions set the bar for generations of brilliant jazz, pop, theater, and soundtrack compos-ers to come. While these compositions

guarantee his greatness, what makes Duke an iconoclastic genius and an unparalleled visionary are his extend-ed suites. From 1943’s Black, Brown and Beige to 1972’s The Uwis Suite, Ellington used the suite format to give his jazz songs a far more empowering meaning, resonance, and purpose: to exalt, mythologize, and re-contextual-ize the African-American experience on a grand scale.

Duke Ellington was awarded the Gram-my Lifetime Achievement Award in 1966. He was later awarded several other prizes, including the Presiden-tial Medal of Freedom in 1969 and the Legion of Honor by France in 1973. He died of lung cancer and pneumonia on May 24, 1974, a month after his 75th birthday, and is buried in the Bronx.

Although Ellington himself has passed, his music lives on, as does the orches-tra that bears his name. A world-class big band, The Duke Ellington Orches-tra continues to perform Duke’s music at venues worldwide, preserving the legacy of one of this country’s greatest national treasures. n

Coulon was formed when vocalist ex-traordinaire Imani Uzuri asked her dear friends, Rozz Nash and Neil Coulon, to perform at her Blue Note show in Janu-ary ’08. At the show, Imani introduced the duo to the world as Coulon . . . and that’s how the magic began. Rozz met drummer Mark Manczuk back in 1999, when he shared a tabla teacher with her then-boyfriend. A year later Mark came to jam with the couple one night, and they asked Mark to join Coulon, aware that his use of tabla, udu, and doumbek

really set the band’s sound apart. Salon, the group’s debut album, is the gift the band is excited to share with the world. n

Striking, bold, organic, and beautiful. Those words describe Maya Azucena’s voice, her music, and her message. On CRY LOVE her impressive talent unfolds over eleven tracks. An anthem for justice, the title track constitutes the album’s core concept. Her desire to in-spire and empower listeners saturates the edgy groove of “Warriors” and the sanguine sway of “Near”. “The Half” is a harrowing take propelled by rock icon Vernon Reid. She invited reggae leg-end and Billboard #1 artist iNi Kamoze aboard on “My Back’s Not Up Against The Wall” while the glistening, acoustic qualities of “Belong To The Sun” furnish another standout cut. The songs are all unified by a remarkable depth and stunning musicality.

Her new album, Tale of a City, won the “Best Jazz Performance” at the 2012 Korean Music Award. Young joo Song recorded and performed with some of

Listening to this remarkable album for the first time you’ll surely be struck first by the deep, soul-piercing voice of that great Brazilian singer, Seu Jorge. Yes: he’s a singer first and foremost. Many may know him as an actor for his screen-stealing performances in the likes of Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic, Fernando Meirelles’ City Of God and Walter Salles’ Linha de Passe, but Seu has known since he was a child that we was destined to sing. He’s a Brazilian singer who speaks the truth through samba, to paraphrase a well-known Seu Jorge quote.

But this project is about a band: Almaz. Drummer Pupillo and guitarist Lucio Maia from the stalwart Nação Zumbi; bassist and composer Antonio Pinto from the soundstages of movies star-

ring Seu Jorge. They came together naturally to record a song for a Salles film; they enjoyed the experience so much that they recorded an entire album of music that inspired them. Songs famous within the Brazilian dias-pora mesh with classic American and European soul songs begging for a bit of psychedelic samba. They enlisted producer and fellow Brazileiro Mario C. (Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson) to put the finishing touches on the project. Their album is both warm and dark; psychedelic and yet grounded, uplifting but at times somber. To listen to it is to join them in the studio, where the only bandleader is the music and the only agenda is to follow your heart. n

Nicole Henry has firmly established herself as one of the most acclaimed entertainers in jazz. Her powerfully ex-pressive voice and her soulful, sophis-ticated and uplifting energy has earned her three top 10 albums. Adding to her vocal talents, Nicole’s beauty and on-stage rapport combines confidence and sincerity, confirming her as an all-around beguiling performer to audi-ences in over 15 countries.

Henry showcases her diversity and skills as a performer and refined inter-preter on her January 29, 2013 release, So Good, So Right: Nicole Henry Live. The 13-track live album, which was recorded at Henry’s sold-out per-formances at Feinstein’s in NYC in May 2012, showcases her soulful, inspired interpretations of some of her favor-ite classic hits of the 70’s from iconic artists including Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, The Commodores and Gladys Knight.

Henry’s 2004 debut CD release, The Nearness of You, won considerable attention from audiences and critics in the U.S. and in Japan, where they named Nicole Best New Jazz Artist of 2004. The following year, Nicole’s Teach Me Tonight reached #1 in Ja-

pan and was named HMV Japan’s Best Vocal Jazz Album of 2005. 2008’s The Very Thought of You substantially ex-panded her American audience, reach-ing #7 on Billboard’s jazz chart. Henry’s 2011 release, Embraceable, was a slight departure from her prior record-ings, and reached the top 20 on jazz and smooth jazz radio charts. It was a creative triumph for Henry that estab-lished her as a peerless interpreter of jazz and pop standards, transcending genre boundaries.

Growing up in a musical family in Bucks County, PA, Nicole immersed herself in the arts early on, singing in school and church, and studying cello and ballet. After graduating from the University of Miami with a degree in Communica-tions and Theatre, Nicole launched a successful acting career, appearing in commercial roles as well as a series of voiceover assignments. But she di-rected her strongest passion toward the development of her full-time sing-ing career which was quickly rewarded in her present hometown, when the Miami New Times named Nicole “Best Solo Musician 2002.” n

KENNY WERNERWiTH THE BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA iNSTiTUTE OF HiGHER LEARNiNG

Long regarded as one of Europe’s premier big bands - a group that “manifests love,” ac-cording to Grammy-winning arranger Maria Schneider - The Brussels Jazz Orchestra has joined hands with Kenny Werner to create a winning tableau vivant of spirited writing and performance. The Institute of Higher Learn-ing features a sumptuous 3-part suite, “Can-tabile,” that reinforces in a singular way Wer-ner’s place among forward-thinking jazzmen. Textural, rhythmic, evincing cascading swirls of color, it was inspired by and dedicated to Bob Brookmeyer. Led by reedman and group founder Frank Vaganee, the BJO offers a per-fect canvas for Werner’s painterly approach to composition and arranging.

Together since they started singing on the stoops of Brooklyn in 1961, The Persuasions have released over 18 al-bums and have recorded or performed with a wide range of artists, including Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler, Stevie Won-der, Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Paul Si-mon, Joni Mitchell, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, The Neville Brothers, Coun-try Joe McDonald, and B.B. King. The Persuasions have consistently garnered criti-cal acclaim over the course of their career, which spans over a half decade. Rolling Stone rated their 1977 album Chirpin’ one of the hundred best works of the 1970s. Rock critic and author Greil Marcus has called their style a “perfect marriage of pas-sion and intelligence.”

The members of The Persua-sions all came from church and secular musical back-grounds, and from the start, their repertoire was a mix of gospel, soul, and pop. They soon graduated from parties to doo-wop shows (although doo-wop makes up only a small part of their repertoire), and in the mid-’60s they worked with Robert F. Kennedy in various projects to aid African-Americans in the in-ner cities. In 1968, The Persuasions were discovered by Frank Zappa, of all people. So striking and formidable was their vocal prowess that Zappa signed them to his Straight label (War-ner Brothers) merely on the strength of hearing them perform over the phone after a friend called from a New York nightclub, declaring, “Frank, you’ve got to hear this.”

From Dylan’s “The Man in Me” to Zap-pa’s withering commentary “The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing,” The Persuasions imbue songs with a conviction, heart, and humor that perhaps even the au-thors didn’t intend. Even after 50 years, they show no signs of retiring any time soon as they continue to undertake new and exciting musical projects.

They love working with kids and fre-quently put on workshops for young singers. In addition, they took on the music of J.J. Cale during the sum-mer of ‘09, featuring the powerhouse baritone-tenor of “Sweet” Joe Russell on “I’ll Make Love To You,” and basso profundo Jimmy Hayes on “Travelin’ Light.” Their latest album, Knocking on Bob’s Door, came out in 2010. n

The saxophone choir is formatted with nine saxophones and a rhythm sec-tion. Established by Odean in 1977, they premiered in 1985 with a Soul Note album called The Saxophone Shop. The saxophone choir has been the realization of his southern legacy; a medium for creating the richly tex-tured harmonic sound that has perme-ated his musical soul since childhood. Additionally, Epitome, The Ponderer, and most recent saxophone choir re-lease Locked & Loaded are exemplary

of the ensemble’s credentials. Even though he plays clarinet, oboe, piccolo, flute and piano, Odean feels an affin-ity for the tenor saxophone because it most closely mimics the human voice. He constructs layers of melodic sound by playing within the fourth system in different tone scales using multiphon-ics, achieving several pitches together, for which he is well known. The choir reaches a stunning intensity that is si-multaneously one voice and is also, as described by Francis Davis, “harmoni-cally engorged.”

Odean grew up in jazz rich territory with other Philadelphia notables such as: John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Clif-ford Brown, Benny Golson, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy and Percy Heath et al. Coltrane chose Odean to replace him in Jimmy Smith’s Group when he left for New York to join Miles Davis.

Although he was close to Coltrane and continues to revere his artistry, Odean was always searching for his

own musical sound. This led him to study with Ron Rubin, the principal woodwind player in the Philadel-phia Orchestra. At a later time he studied at The Paris Conser-vatory for Music un-der Kenny Clarke. It was there that he re-ceived his Certificate in Orchestration, Modern harmony, African rhythms, Be-Bop Art Forms and Arrangement.

In 1979, Odean joined the Max Roach Quartet as a regular member for

more than two decades. It was as the tenor man with Max Roach that Odean perfected the techniques of circular breathing and multiphonics, both allowing him to stretch his solo improvisations from dazzling eleva-tions to the throbbing, husky sounds for which he is so well known, to all kinds of delicacy in getting from one to the other. Odean won acclaim from Australia to Japan, even winning “Best Tenor Saxophone Player” at the North Sea Jazz Festival. n
