Conventions

A similar colour scheme has been used on both products. The use of black and dark colours in both images with the contrast of white in the middle (t-shirt of the skater, images of the band in gorillaz poster) is used effectively to draw attention to the focal point of the image. Since conventions of my genre are based around skating, rebelling etc. the use of a skater on my album advert gives the viewer an idea of what the album will entail.

The use of two base colours gives an aspect of simplicity to the design and this reinforces conventions seen on the left example. The use of writing t the top with a more in depth description at the bottom is carried through on both posters, including website and record label.I decided to reveal as little as possible about the album, in keeping of conventions with other posters. This allows for hype and talk to build up of the album before it is released.

For my poster, it hasbeen set in a skate park. This is a typical settingfor the style of music, aspunk-pop is generallyassociated with skating, drinking and antisocialbehaviour. This is shownby the skater, skating ona box with graffiti on thebox. The colouring I haveused on this poster isfocused around givingemphasis to the skaterin the middle, bringinghim into the focal pointas he is wearing white. The style of clothes aretypical of pop-punk, ashe is wearing skinny

jeans, a baseball hat on backwards and a short sleeve, contrasting t-shirt.The fonts I have used aretypical of pop-punk asmedia products fromthis genre are typically‘underdone’ and Ibelieve the lack of afancy serif font adds tothis effect. The layout of the poster is as well typical, not giving much information away and featuring a picture in the middle with upper and lower texts, including the bands label, website and release date.

This poster features thesimilar black backgroundwith white, serif fontwith a focal point in themiddle. The use of theband in the middle, intheir signature cartoonform resonates with myposter, adding contrastand bringing in a focalpoint. The serif fonts aresimilar to mine also, aswell as the layoutdrawing the eye to readthe top, scan the pictureand read the bolderrelease date. This bandhave also featured theband’s website at thebottom of the advert.

The air of mystery is also similar to my album, featuring only the album title and the album release date. This seems to be a conventional way of designing posters, as well as the top and bottom layout to draw the viewer in and increase sale of their media product. The clothes featured in the cartoons are reflections of the personalities of the artists and I believe this is the same in my advert, as the artist featured is a skater and pop-punk enthusiast.
