THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with ar-resting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John’s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God.

LA RIQUEZA DEL ESPÍRITU Los estudiantes y la mayoría de los adultos que recuerdan sus días de escuela, están familiarizados con la frase “compara y contrasta” que de tanto en tanto aparece en las pruebas. Hoy escuchamos dos relatos diferentes sobre la venida del Espíritu. Contrastemos y luego comparemos. El relato de Lucas en Hechos está lleno de detalles impresionantes: el viento poderoso, llamas de fuego como lenguas, el

milagro de las diferentes lenguas. El relato de Juan parece tímido: discípulos temerosos, el Cristo llagado, el soplo de aliento viene de su cuerpo resucitado y no del cielo. Mientras nuestras mentes modernas y literales se preguntan de qué manera sucedió; nuestra ruidosa cultura probablemente nos hará preferir el primer relato. Pero si comparamos los dos, la deslumbrante riqueza del Espíritu llena ambos relatos, ya que es el mismo aliento del Cristo resucitado, ascendido a los cielos en Lucas, el que se aparece a sus discípulos en Juan y envía a sus seguidores a llevar a cabo su misión de perdonar los pecados y proclamar los portentos de Dios.

Cuando estábamos en la escuela secundaria, había una vieja alegría en juegos de pelota, "Tenemos espíritu, sí lo tenemos. Tenemos espíritu ¿que hay de ti?" Lo gritaríamos de un lado a otro con los fanáticos del equipo contrario. Y mientras, ¿Tienes espíritu?" sin duda podría ser el eslogan de hoy, vemos personas recibiendo el espíritu de muchas maneras diferentes. En Hechos, hay una apariencia bombástica de un ruido fuerte y un viento que conduce, seguido por personas que pueden entender pues habla en muchos idiomas. Es una reminiscencia de un auge, "Este es mi Hijo, mi Amado". El Salmo 104 "Señor, envía tu espíritu" también fue el primer salmo utilizado en la Vigilia Pascual, en respuesta a la historia de la creación. En la primera carta a los Corintios reconoce que hay muchos dones espiritua-les diferentes, pero debemos usarlos juntos como el cuerpo de Cristo. La secuencia es una hermosa oración que invoca al Espí-ritu. En el Evangelio de Juan, el Espíritu viene por el aliento de Jesús. ¿Qué podemos sacar de esto? Que el Espíritu de Dios no es "una talla para todos". Más bien, el Espíritu Santo vendrá a nosotros, nos hablará, se nos dará, según lo necesite cada uno de nosotros.

ABRIR LAS PUERTAS Cuando ponemos el Evangelio en su contexto, Juan 20 empieza con el sepulcro vacío y la aparición a María Magdalena. Aún así, los discípulos estaban asustados y confundidos. Se reunieron para reagruparse. Cerraron la puerta con llave por miedo a los judíos, a quienes habían vistos furiosos en una turba, quienes acababan de crucificar a su amigo Jesús. Estos discípulos tenían miedo de los judíos, pero también podían haberse sentido culpables y confundidos por haber huido de Jesús en la cruz, por esconderse, por tratar de protegerse ellos mismos. Ahora Jesús resucitado viene hacia ellos diciéndoles: “la paz sea con ustedes”, mostrándoles sus cicatrices, y saludándolos una vez más. Jesús está moldeando algo muy poderoso aquí. Para poder ser sanados, para recibir al Espíritu, para seguir con nuestras vidas, necesitamos abrir nuestras puertas interiores. Necesitamos dejar a Jesús entrar a nuestra casa, a nuestros corazones, y en aquellas esquinas oscuras de nosotros. Podría ser aterrador. Podría significar ir al Sacramento de la Reconciliación o hablar con un director espiritual o incluso con un terapeuta.

RECIBIR AL ESPÍRITU SANTO Frecuentemente nos preocupamos por cómo los demás responderán si no somos perfectos. Jesús sabía que los discípulos eran humanos con defectos. Él no se enojó ni los hizo sentir culpables. Él dijo: “la paz sea con ustedes”. Fue gentil. Jesús les dio el don de la vida nueva por medio de un gesto simple. Él sopló en ellos el Espíritu Santo. Esto es una reminiscencia del Génesis, cuando Dios sopló vida en Adán; y Ezequiel, cuando Dios volvió a soplar vida en los huesos secos. Jesús concluyó con: “a quienes les perdonen los pecados, les serán perdonados; y a quienes se los retengan, les serán retenidos”. Así que no sólo les confió Jesús este papel, este poder, sino que primero les mostró cómo se hace. ¿Cómo nosotros insuflamos vida a nuestras familias y amigos? ¿A nuestros compañeros de trabajo? ¿Al extranjero que encontramos?

When we were in high school, there was an old cheer at ballgames, “We’ve got spirit, yes we do. We’ve got spirit, how ‘bout you?” We would scream it back and forth with the opposing team’s fans. And while, “Got Spirit?” could certainly be the catchphrase today, we see people receiving the spirit in many different ways. In Acts, there is a bombastic appearance of a loud noise and a driving wind, followed by people being able to understand speech in many languages. It is reminiscent of a booming, “This is my Son, my Beloved.” Psalm 104 “Lord, Send out Your Spirit” was also the first psalm used at the Easter Vigil, in response to the creation story. First Corinthians acknowledges that there are many different spiritual gifts, but we must use them together as the body of Christ. The Sequence is a beautiful prayer that calls down the Spirit. In John’s Gospel, the Spirit comes through the breath of Jesus. What can we take away from this? That the Spirit of God is not “one size fits all.” Rather, the Holy Spirit will come to us, speak to us, be given to us, as each of us needs.

UNLOCK THE DOORS When we put the Gospel in its context, John 20 starts with the empty tomb and the appearance to Mary Magdalene. Still, the disciples were scared and confused. They gathered together to regroup. They locked the door for fear of the Jews, whom they had just experienced as an angry mob, whom they had just seen crucify their friend Jesus. These disciples were afraid of the Jews, but they may also have been feeling guilty and confused for running away from Jesus at the cross, for hiding, for trying to protect themselves. Now the risen Jesus comes to them saying, “Peace be with you,” showing them his wounds, and greeting them again. Jesus is modeling something very powerful here. Most of us hate to be vulnerable. We try to hide our wounds and scars. We try to protect ourselves and show everybody that we have it together. In order to be healed, to receive the Spirit, to move on in our lives, we need to unlock our internal doors. We need to let Jesus into our house, into our hearts, and into those darkened corners of ourselves. It might be frightening. It might mean going to the sacrament of reconciliation or speaking with a spiritual director or even with a therapist.

RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT We often worry about how others will respond if we are less than perfect. Jesus knew the disciples were flawed humans. He did not get angry or give them a guilt trip. He said, “Peace be with you.” He was gentle. Jesus gave them the gift of new life through a simple gesture. He breathed the Spirit into them. This is reminiscent of Genesis, when God breathed life into Adam, and Ezekiel, when God breathed life back into the dry bones. Jesus concluded with, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” So not only did Jesus entrust them with this role, this power, he first showed them how it is done. How do we in turn breathe life into our families and friends? Our coworkers? The stranger we meet?

FR. ALVARO PEREZ, PES Pastor Father Alvaro Perez was born in Lima, Peru, and he is the youngest of four. He comes from a devout Catholic family. Most of his family still lives in Peru. Right after graduation from college, where he studied to become an industrial engineer, he joined his religious community Pro Ecclesia Sancta at the age of twenty-three. In 2009, he was sent to Minnesota to finish his theological training at the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity. He was ordained a priest in St. Paul on May 30, 2015. Father Alvaro moved to the Diocese of Sacramento in 2018 to become a pastor of the Churches of St. Anthony in Walnut Grove and St. Therese in Isleton. He is very excited and happy to begin this new adventure at the helm of the beautiful Parish of St. Lawrence in North Highlands. He is excited about getting to know all of you and celebrate the Eucharist with our community.

FR. ADAM TOKASHIKI, PES Parochial Vicar / Chaplain at Newman Center Father Adam Tokashiki was born in Lima, Peru in 1986. He has three older brothers; two live in Peru and the other in Canada. Father Adam studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Lima for a short period before God called him to the religious life. He joined Pro Ecclesia Sancta (PES) in 2006. He was sent to Saint Paul, Minnesota in 2009 to start a new PES foundation along with two other mem-bers, one of which was Fr. Alvaro Perez, your new pastor! In 2012, Fr. Adam earned his B.A. degree from the University of St. Thomas, majoring in Philosophy and Catholic Studies. During his studies, he also helped in different ministries at St. Mark’s Parish in St .Paul and St. Thomas University, such as music, liturgy, youth, and young adults, sacramental prep, etc. He finished his theological training at the St Paul Seminary School of Divinity and was ordained a priest in the spring of 2016. After ordination, Fr. Adam served as chaplain at Chesterton Academy, a Catholic high school in the Twin Cities, and as Parochial Vicar at St. Mark’s Parish. He is very excited about the new mission God is giving him in sunny California!

FATHER JUAN CARLOS VILLAVICENCIO Priest-in-residence Father Juan Carlos Villavicencio was born in Lima, Peru, and he is the youngest of four. He comes from a devout Catholic family. Right after graduation from college, where he studied to become a system engineer, he joined his religious community Pro Ecclesia Sancta at the age of twenty-seven. He did all his studies in Peru, three years of philosophy in Lima, and four years of Theology in Arequipa where he got his degree. He was ordained a priest in Peru on March 17, 2018. Father Juan Carlos was assigned to the Diocese of Sacramento eight days after his ordination. His first assignment was at Saint Joseph Parish in Vacaville as Parochial Vicar. He is very happy to be part of this new family and looks forward to serving and put all his talents and dedication into this new assignment. 4

EL P. ÁLVARO PÉREZ, PES Pastor

El padre Álvaro Pérez nació en Lima, Perú, y es el menor de cuatro. Él viene de una familia Católica

devota. La mayor parte de su familia todavía vive en Perú. Justo después de graduarse de la universidad,

donde estudió para convertirse en ingeniero industrial, se unió a su comunidad religiosa Pro Ecclesia Sancta a

la edad de veintitrés años. En 2009, fue enviado a Minnesota para terminar su formación teológica en la Escuela de Divinidad del

Seminario St. Paul. Fue ordenado sacerdote en St. Paul el 30 de mayo de 2015. El Padre Álvaro se mudó a la Diócesis de Sacramento en 2018 para convertirse en pastor de las Iglesias

de St. Anthony en Walnut Grove y St. Therese en Isleton. Está muy emocionado y feliz de comenzar esta nueva aventura al

El p. Adam Tokashiki nació en Lima, Perú, en 1986. Tiene tres hermanos mayores; dos viven en Perú y el

otro en Canadá. El p. Adam estudió en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música de Lima por un corto período antes

de que Dios lo llamó a la vida religiosa. Se unió a Pro Ecclesia Sancta (PES) en 2006. Fue enviado a Saint Paul, Minnesota en 2009 para comenzar una nueva fundación de PES junto con

otros dos miembros, uno de los cuales era el p. Alvaro Perez, tu nuevo pastor! En 2012, el p. Adam se ganó su B.A.

Licenciado por la Universidad de St. Thomas, con especializa-ción en Filosofía y Estudios Católicos. Durante sus estudios, también ayudó en diferentes ministerios en la Parroquia de San

Marcos en la Universidad de San Pablo y Santo Tomás, como música, liturgia, jóvenes y adultos jóvenes, preparación

sacramental, etc. Terminó su formación teológica en la Escuela del Seminario de San Pablo de Divinidad y fue ordenado sacerdote

en la primavera de 2016. Después de la ordenación, el p. Adam sirvió como capellán en la Academia Chesterton, una escuela secundaria católica en las Ciudades Gemelas, y como Vicario

Parroquial en la parroquia de San Marcos. ¡Está muy entusiasmado con la nueva misión que Dios le está

PADRE JUAN CARLOS VILLAVICENCIO Sacerdote en Residencia

El padre Juan Carlos Villavicencio nació en Lima, Perú, y es el menor de cuatro. Él viene de una familia Católica

devota. Justo después de graduarse de la universidad, donde estudió para convertirse en ingeniero de sistemas, se

unió a su comunidad religiosa Pro Ecclesia Sancta a la edad de veintisiete años. Realizó todos sus estudios en Perú,

tres años de filosofía en Lima y cuatro años de teología en Arequipa, donde obtuvo su título. Fue ordenado sacerdote

en Perú el 17 de marzo de 2018. El Padre Juan Carlos fue asignado a la Diócesis de Sacramento ocho días después de

su ordenación. Su primera asignación fue en la Parroquia Saint Joseph en Vacaville como Vicario Parroquial. Está muy

feliz de ser parte de esta nueva familia y espera servir y poner todos sus talentos y dedicación en esta nueva tarea.

MAY 29, 2020 - MESSAGE FROM BISHOP JAIME SOTO Dear Friends in Christ:

The Catholic community in the Diocese of Sacramento will be able to celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi, around the sacred altars of their parish churches on Sunday, June 14th.

I am lifting the heartbreaking suspension of public celebrations of the Sacrifice of the Mass starting on Monday, June 8th. This will help pastors ready the churches for the glorious Feast of Corpus Christi. Parishes that are prepared to implement all the necessary public health protocols may begin offering Mass with the Faithful on June 8th.

My brother priests and I are taking all the steps to ensure the Feast of Corpus Christi is celebrated in a manner that gives peace of mind to all our brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus.

The public guidelines I recently shared for resuming public celebrations of the Mass have been updated to reflect our continued work with public health officials. These guidelines are available on the diocesan website. These guidelines include limiting attendance to the lower of either 25% of church capacity or a maximum of 100 congregants. Pastors will also make these guidelines available to their parishioners. Please consult with your local parish to confirm the schedule of Masses and other directives intended to provide a safe environment for everyone in the church assembly.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not ended but conditions have improved sufficiently so that we can begin to offer the Mass and other sacraments in a cautious and responsible manner. It is still necessary to maintain physical-distancing. The wearing of masks in church is strongly recommended. Those who are 65 years of age and older should remain at home. Those with a vulnerable health condition should also continue to stay in their homes. To continue to protect the most vulnerable among us, the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is still in effect. If you feel sick or have any flu-like symptoms, do not come to Church. Stay home. Again, please consult the diocesan website or your parish for more information on how to be safe and protect one another from the coronavirus contagion.

With these new guidelines in place, we are still not able to come back to the table as in the past. As we adapt to these changes, we are all called to greater charity and understanding during this transition. Our continued vigilance respects those who are afflicted and honors those who risk their own lives in caring for them. The patient efforts each of us makes are an act of Christian solidarity that will strengthen the whole Body of Christ.

Our Lord Jesus has been the Good Shepherd throughout the Lenten and Easter Seasons. He has also been our wise, good Teacher instructing us through the sacrifices we have endured. These tribulations will continue for many of us. Our sharing in the Lord’s passion has offered a communion in the Lord’s saving death.

As we prepare to approach the Lord’s altar of sacrifice, may you know His consoling mercy and His encouraging grace. This Pentecost Sunday, we will continue to gather behind the closed doors as did the first disciples. The Blessed Mother Mary was in their company as they prayed. She will certainly be with each of you and your families. Pray with her as she intercedes for all of us. Her example teaches us to be open to the Spirit’s promptings even in these uncertain days. The Holy Spirit will help us to welcome the Lord Jesus with open hands and hearts as the Feast of Corpus Christi draws closer.

Be assured that Bishop Weigand, my brother priests and I continue to offer our Masses and pray for all of you so that soon we may taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

29 DE MAYO DE 2020 - MENSAJE DEL MONS. JAIME SOTO Queridos Amigos en Cristo:

La comunidad católica en la Diócesis de Sacramento podrá celebrar la Fiesta del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, Corpus Christi, alre-dedor de los altares sagrados de sus templos parroquiales el domingo 14 de junio.

Estoy levantando la dolorosa suspensión de las celebraciones públicas del Sacrificio de la Misa a partir del lunes, 8 de junio. Esto ayudará a los sacerdotes a preparar las iglesias para la gloriosa Fiesta del Corpus Christi. Las parroquias que están preparadas para implementar todos los protocolos de salud pública necesarios pueden comenzar a ofrecer misa con los fieles el 8 de junio.
