GRACE AND ETERNAL LIFE Moses is a man after our own hearts, for haven’t we all dealt with more than our share of stiff-necked people? Indeed, haven’t we all gotten a little stiff-necked ourselves at times? Complaining . . . impatient . . . quick to anger. How lucky for Moses—how lucky for all of us—that God is exactly the opposite! And we don’t even have to guess about it. The Lord tells us so directly. Accordingly, Moses does what we all need to do. Even with the tablets in hand, he bows down and asks for God’s forgiveness and grace. Encouraging us to live together in peace—and in God’s favor—the Apostle Paul knows all about this grace, joyfully invoking Christ’s grace on us along with God’s love and the Holy Spirit’s. “Rejoice,” he says. And when it comes to rejoicing, John offers us the gladdest words of all: the assurance of eternal life through Jesus.

GRACIA Y VIDA ETERNA Moisés es un hombre como nosotros, ¿acaso no

hemos tratado también con cabezas duras? De hecho, ¿acaso no hemos sido nosotros mismos

los cabezas duras? Quejumbrosos. . . impacientes. . . rápidos para enojarnos. ¡Qué suerte la de Moi-

sés y qué suerte la nuestra que Dios es precisa-mente lo opuesto! Y ni siquiera tenemos que

divinarlo. El Señor nos lo dice directamente. Y en concordancia, Moisés hace lo que todos necesitamos

hacer. Pese a tener las tablas en las manos, se postra y pide el perdón y la gracia de Dios.

Alentándonos a vivir juntos en paz y con el favor de Dios, el apóstol Pablo sabe de esta gracia, e invoca con

alegría la gracia del amor de Dios y del Espíritu Santo sobre nosotros. “Estén alegres”, dice. Y cuando se trata

A lo largo del ciclo litúrgico de los domingos y las estaciones, hay ciertos días que nos invitan a centrarnos en aspectos particulares de nuestra fe. Hoy es un día en que celebramos la solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad. En este domingo después de Pentecostés, reflexionamos sobre el misterio de nuestro Dios Unitrino: Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. Desde el momento de la creación, a través del encuentro de Moisés con Dios en la montaña, a través de la vida, muerte y resurrección de Cristo, con el derramamiento del Espíritu Santo, nuestra comprensión y apreciación de la vida misma de Dios se ha desplegado y profundizado. Jesús vino al mundo para dar a conocer la vida y el amor de Dios, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, el amor de Dios que nos trae la paz. DIOS ES MISERICORDIOSO Y COMPASIVO Hay momentos en nuestra vida en los que podemos pregun-tarnos cómo sabemos quién es Dios o cómo es. Las lecturas de hoy nos ayudan a sentirnos seguros al poner nuestra fe en Dios y a estar seguros del amor constante de Dios. Cuando Moisés subió a la montaña, como le había ordenado el Señor, Dios poderosamente se expuso. “El Señor, el Señor, un Dios misericordioso y compasivo, lento para enojarse y rico en misericordia y bondad”. Jesús nos muestra las profundidades de esta vida en Dios. Él no vino a condenar al mundo sino a salvarlo. Como personas en una relación con Dios, a menudo fallamos. Throughout the liturgical cycle of Sundays and seasons, there are certain days that invite us to focus on particular aspects of our faith. Today is such a day, when we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. On this Sunday after Pentecost, we reflect on the mystery of our Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. From the moment of creation, through the encoun-ter of Moses with God on the mountain, through Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, our understanding and appreciation of God’s very life has unfolded and deepened. Jesus came into the world to make God’s life and love known, the love of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the love of God that brings us peace. GOD IS MERCIFUL AND GRACIOUS At moments in our lives we may wonder how we know who God is or what God is like. Today’s readings help us to feel secure in placing our faith in God and being assured of God’s unfailing love. When Moses went up the mountain as the Lord had commanded him, God powerfully described himself, “The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.” Jesus shows us the depths of this life of God. He came not to condemn the world but to save it. As people in relationship with God, we often fail. We walk away from God’s ways, fall into sinfulness, and then, with the Lord’s grace, come to our senses and return. God’s words to Moses and the very life of Jesus show us that when we do so, we can still rely on God’s mercy and kindness, because love is God’s very nature. CALLED TO BE LIKE GOD We might consider this testimony to the life and love of God and think to ourselves, so what? Knowing that God loves us is reassuring, and may help us place our faith and trust in the Lord, but something more naturally follows—as followers of Jesus, we are called to become more like him. When others look at us, they should be able to say that we are “merciful and gracious, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.” This gets at the heart of what it means to be a Christian. Our daily decisions, words, and actions are to reflect the merciful graciousness of God. We are able to do this through the indwelling power and presence of the Holy Spirit. In what ways are you becoming more Christ-like? May the grace of the Lord, love of God, and fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you as you renew your commitment to show and share God’s kindness to others!

I am heartbroken to see the fabric of the Sacramento community torn by bitterness and anger. I call on the Catholic people of the Diocese of Sacramento to join me in asking the Lord Jesus to strengthen our hearts, to mend our city, and to heal our nation. We pray for the eternal rest of George Floyd and for the consolation of his family. We implore that justice be rendered in this case. And we ask that the Lord Jesus comfort and heal all those who have been harmed by the ensuing civil unrest. The repugnant killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis has provoked outrage and disgust throughout our society. Men and women from all walks of life, including police officers, are united in their disgust and anger at this senseless death. No justification can absolve the killing of Mr. Floyd. We must togeth-er demonstrate our abhorrence for violence – all violence. No excuse can explain the reckless destruction and looting that has surged in our community. The destruction and violence on our streets will not remedy the injustice of Mr. Floyd’s death. They simply add more innocent victims to this tragedy. Each act of violence and destruction deepens the wounds to our city and nation, and perpetuates an ugly cycle of anger, vio-lence, and reckless reprisal. It is like a contagion infecting ever more hearts with rising fear, hatred, and bitterness that harden the heart. Hardheartedness is a condition of the soul that is not easily remedied. Political solutions will not soften it. More social programs will not soothe it. These endeavors must be deployed with good reason, but more than these are needed. As we strive to lift ourselves from the wreckage of these past days the medicine our souls need is prayer. This is perhaps out of fashion today, but it is a timeless source of hope. We must ask the Lord Jesus to keep us from a hardness of heart. Pray that the Lord deliver us from indifference. Unlike physical-distancing that can save lives, indifference is a moral-distancing that demeans lives. To the ancient biblical question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”, the answer must be yes. (Gen. 4.9) Ask the Lord to free us from fears that close our hearts to others. Petition Christ to fill our hearts with His tender mercy so that there is no room for bitterness. Beg the Lord Jesus to allow our hearts to see one another more clearly and remove the blindness of racism that can afflict any of us no matter the color of our skins. The first letter of St. John reminds us, if we do not love the brother we can see, how can we love the God we cannot see? (I Jn. 4.20) Jesus assures us only the pure of heart can see God. (Mt. 5.8) We now begin the month of June, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This image of Christ shows a pierced, wounded heart surrounded by a crown of thorns. The sorrowful passion inflicted on the Lord did not harden His heart. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is an everlasting fountain of tender mercy. The past days have brought to light many wounded hearts and wounded more hearts besides. Let us together ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus to give each of us a heart like His.

My Dear St. Lawrence Family,

With confidence in God’s plan, I bring you more detailed information regarding what was announced this past weekend about the celebration of public mass.

As stated previously, we will implement this return to church in a way that is gradual, safe and reverent. It is with joy that we make these announcements, but we recognize that preparing well for these celebrations is an act of love. We ask for your cooperation and patience.

We will begin the celebration of Public Mass here at St. Lawrence on Monday June 8th for our daily mass at 8:30am. We will return to the public celebration of Sunday Mass for Feast of Corpus Christi on June 13 and 14 with a modified mass schedule (see below).

Before I share with you the details, allow me first to say thank you to the many volunteers and staff of St. Lawrence who have been working hard to make this a possibility for our community. Thank you also to the many people who have been supporting us materially and spiritually.

While, I will provide some brief information here, the full details about the return to mass are provided on our website: saintlawrencechurch.org/

General Principles on the Celebration of Mass at St. Lawrence (based on the guidelines from the Diocese of Sacramento, with guidance from the California Department of Public Health): ● The decree issued by Bishop Soto on March 13, 2020, dispensing ALL the faithful from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation remains in effect. ● Those who fall in the vulnerable category are asked to continue with the shelter-in-place ordinances, and carefully discern their attendance at public masses. (See details below.) ● Parishioners are to wear masks for the entirety of the celebration, and instruction will be given on how to remove your mask for the reception of Holy Communion. Gloves are not recommended. ● Wash hands and sanitize hands often. ● Sufficient personal sanitization and the sanitization of the Church will be implemented. ● A system of contact tracing will be in place. ● A maximum of 100 people, including those serving the Mass will be allowed inside the Church building at St. Lawrence. ● In order to address these guidelines, a reservation system will be in place for the Sunday Masses (see below). ● Please DO NOT shake hands with other parishioners. ● Please DO NOT hold hands during the Our Father. ● Please SANITIZE your hands upon entering the church. ● The sign of peace has been temporarily suspended. ● The cry room will be inaccessible for the time being. What to expect at Mass at St. Lawrence in general: ● Staff Members and volunteers will be on-site to assist and give instruction, check reservations, check temperatures, and provide masks - for the health and well-being of all, please listen to their instructions. ● Informational signs will be posted - please follow instructions carefully. ● Hymnals and missalettes and hardcopy bulletins have been removed from the church. Readings and bulletins are provided through the MyParish App accessible via your phone. (Instructions for downloading the MyParish App available on parish website.) ● While waiting to enter the church, please follow the guides provided for proper physical distancing. ● Maintain a 6-foot distance between households.

What to expect for Daily Mass (Mon - Fri @ 8:30am): ● Doors of the Church will be opened at 8:00am. ● Upon entering a staff member will ask for your contact information for the purpose of contact tracing. ● For communion, a staff member will instruct you when to stand and leave your pew. ● While silent prayer is an important part of our faith, we ask you to leave the Church as promptly as possible after each service so that we may take the necessary precautions of sanitizing the Church for the well-being of all.

● For daily mass, we encourage you to make your prayers after mass, at the Grotto.

What to expect for Sunday Mass: ● Gates of the Church parking lot will be opened 45 minutes before your scheduled mass reservation. To ensure the health and well- being of all, we cannot admit any household that does not have a reservation. ● Doors of the Church will be opened 30 minutes before the Mass will begin. You may wait in your car or line up by household following the social distance guides provided. ● While waiting in line masks will be provided for those who need masks, and temperatures will be checked. ● One household at a time, hospitality ministers will escort you to your place and invite you to make any offering/donation you would like to make. ● For the well-being of all, and in order to maintain order— households will not be able to select where they sit. NOTE: The hospitality minister will ask you if there is a member of the household who will be receiving communion on the tongue, and if so, you will be seated in a section for those who plan on receiving communion on the tongue.

While silent prayer is an important part of our faith, we ask you to leave the Church as promptly as possible after each service so that we may take the necessary precautions of sanitizing the Church for the well-being of all. You will be dismissed by a hospitality minister.

While we all desire to be reunited with one another and with our Lord at the Mass, making the prudent decision of not attending mass out of concern for the health of others is an act of love.

Before coming to Mass, please carefully consider these things: Please Stay Home: ● If you are feeling sick or exhibiting symptoms. ● If you have recently been in contact with someone wit COVID-19. ● If you are not feeling well or are exhibiting any symptoms of illness.

Symptoms that need to be given serious attention and require the exercise of serious caution: ● Temperature above 100.4 F. ● Cough or sore throat. ● Recent loss of smell or taste. ● Chills. ● New muscle aches. ● Gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea.

Mi querida familia de San Lorenzo,

Con mi confianza en el plan de Dios, les traigo información más detallada sobre lo que se anunció el pasado fin de semana sobre la celebración de la misa pública.

Como se indicó anteriormente, implementaremos este regreso a la iglesia de una manera gradual, segura y reverente. Con alegría hacemos estos anuncios, pero reconocemos que prepararse bien para estas celebraciones es un acto de amor. Es por eso que les pedimos su cooperación y paciencia.

Comenzaremos la celebración de la misa pública aquí en San Lorenzo el lunes 8 de junio para nuestra misa diaria a las 8:30 am. Volveremos a la celebración pública de la misa dominical para la fiesta del Corpus Christi los días 13 y 14 de junio con un horario de misas modificado (ver más abajo).
