MANTENTE FIRME EN EL SEÑOR No es difícil imaginar, en esta época de guerras,

que grupos malvados tiendan a la destrucción de la humanidad y locuras políticas, que las

palabras de san Pablo fueron tan precisas, aún para el tiempo en que vivió. Pareciera que el mundo nunca cambia. Pablo dice muchos se

comportan como enemigos de la cruz de Cristo. Para los que piensan en cosas terrenas, su destino es la

perdición. . . (Filipenses 3: 18, 19). El resultado es la destrucción de personas inocentes y del planeta mismo. Pero Pablo dice a

los filipenses: somos ciudadanos del cielo, de donde esperamos como salvador a Jesucristo el Señor (3:20). Él transformará

nuestro cuerpo frágil en un cuerpo glorioso semejante al suyo (3:21). Nota que él dice cuerpo en lugar de cuerpos . Él habla

acerca de la completa comunidad de creyentes, quienes, siguiendo el ejemplo de Jesús y Pablo, vendrán a la gloria de

Dios. Así que ¡manténganse firmes en el Señor! (4:1).

STAND FIRM IN THE LORD It is not hard to imagine, in this age of wars, evil groups bent on the destruction of humani-ty, and political follies, that the words of Saint Paul were so accurate, even for his time. It seems that the world never changes. Paul says, Many . . . conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is their destruction . . . Their minds are occupied with earthly things (Philippians 3:18, 19). The result is the destruction of innocent people and of the Earth itself. But Paul says to the Philippians, our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (3:20). He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body (3:21). Note that he says body rather than bodies. He is talking about the whole community of believers, who, following the example of Jesus and of Paul, will come into the glory of God. So stand firm in the Lord (4:1).

SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA ¿Has tenido alguna vez una visión de Dios? Tal vez percibiste su presencia en un momento tranquilo de oración, una tierna conversación con un ser querido o una situación difícil que se resolvió inesperada-mente. A Pedro, Santiago y Juan en el Evangelio de hoy se les dio una visión de la gloria de Cristo en la montaña, al transfigurarse Jesús delante de ellos. Abraham puso su fe en Dios y vio Su poder en una maravillosa señal de amor. Nosotros tenemos la promesa de la vida eterna con Dios en el cielo. Esta promesa viene con la responsabilidad, a vivir

como personas de Dios en el mundo. La Cuaresma es el momento perfecto para escuchar con más atención al Señor y seguir los caminos de Dios, con la certeza de que al hacerlo, ponemos nues-tra fe en el único Dios verdadero y fiel. DA UN PASO ¿Cómo escuchas a Dios? Aunque pueda parecer como si fuera imposible escuchar la voz de Dios, mientras más la escuchemos, más acostumbrado estaremos a prestar atención. La escuchamos en la oración, al leer la Biblia y cuando escuchamos la Escritura Sagrada, en la homilía y en las oraciones durante la Misa. Escuchamos en la compañía de otros amigos en la fe que compartes sus esperanzas y sueños con nosotros, y que nos ayudan a discernir lo que Dios pueda estar llamándonos a hacer. Abram escuchó la voz de Dios y se abrió a lo desconocido. Pedro, Santiago y Juan siguieron a Jesús, incluso mientras todavía estaban inseguros de él y de su misión. Cada uno dio un paso de fe, y con fe siguió el camino de Dios. Ya sea en tiempo de certidumbre, cuando parece que Dios está en los lugares donde buscamos o en esos periodos cuando añoramos saber que Dios está con nosotros, estamos llamados a escuchar, confiar y a dar pasos de fe, modelando nuestras vidas en la vida y llamada de Jesucristo. O UN SALTO A veces, los pasos que tomamos se sienten más como saltos de fe. Los destellos que percibimos en esos momentos de cercanía con Dios nos ayudan a permanecer en el camino de Cristo, especialmente cuando estamos inseguros de lo que sigue por hacer. Con el salmista, tomamos un salto de fe y encontramos esperanza en el Señor: El Señor es mi luz y mi salvación, ¿a quién temeré? El Señor es el refugio de mi vida, ¿a quién temeré?

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Have you ever had a glimpse of God? Perhaps you perceived God's presence in a quiet moment of prayer, a tender conversation with a loved one, or a difficult situation that was resolved unexpectedly. Peter, James, and John in today's Gospel were given a glimpse of Christ's glory on the mountain, as Jesus was transfigured before them. Abram put his faith in God and saw God's power in a wondrous sign of covenant love. We have the promise of eternal life with God in heaven. This promise brings with it responsibility, as people who are called to live as Christ's very own in the world. Lent is the perfect time to resolve to listen more attentively to the Lord and follow God's ways, assured that in doing so, we put our faith in the one, true, and faithful God. TAKE A STEP

How do you listen to God? While it might seem as though it is impossible to hear God's voice, the more we listen, the more attuned we become to hearing. We listen in prayer, in reading the Bible and hearing sacred scripture, in the homily, and in the prayers during Mass. We listen in the companionship of other faith-filled friends who share their hopes and dreams with us, and who help us discern what God may be calling us to do. Abram heard God's voice and opened himself to the unknown. Peter, James, and John followed Jesus, even while still unsure about him or his mission. Each took steps toward faith, and in faith followed God's way. Whether in times of certainty, when it seems God is everywhere we look, or in those periods when we yearn to know that God is with us, we are called to listen, to trust, and to take steps of faith, modeling our lives on the life and call of Jesus Christ. OR A LEAP

At times, the steps we take feel more like leaps of faith. While we might be called to walk the walk of faith in our daily lives, as the apostles and countless other disciples have throughout the ages, there are moments when we may need to step out into an unknown future, as did Abram before us. The glimpses of God's presence and glory experienced by Abram and the disciples provided needed encouragement at pivotal moments, and especially when it seemed for a while that God was absent. The glimpses we perceive in those moments of closeness with God help us to remain on Christ's path, especially when we are unsure of what to do next. With the psalmist, take a leap of faith and find hope in the Lord: The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life's refuge; of whom should I be afraid?

By now, many may have failed in Lenten discipline to some measure or another: the daily doughnut is simply too alluring, or a furtive puff on a cigarette irresistible. There is meaning even in the failure, though, a kind of reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Part of the power of Lent is that we do it together, and although individuals decide on different ways to keep it, it is fundamentally the same journey. We fall, we get up, we keep moving. The desire to give something up for Lent is an age-old impulse in the Christian heart. We get better at it over the years, and move more deeply into the meaning and message of acts of sacrifice; so there is no shame in stumbling, as long as we are not discouraged by the failure and give up. We are clearing space in our lives, after all, and some of the things we desire to give up are worth rooting out completely anyway. What do we do with the space we have cleared out by our sacrifice? The Len-ten question of giving up is balanced by the Easter question of our response to Christ s embrace of us in love: What are you taking on for Easter? Rev. James Field

La Cuaresma nos llama a la conversión, a la cual deberíamos estar dedicados todo el año. En muchas parroquias latinas la Cuaresma también es tiempo de misiones. De niño recuerdo haber participado cada año en las misiones de mi parroquia. Escuchábamos a los predicadores con curiosidad, ya que aparecían solo una vez al año y luego se regresaban a lugares lejanos y desconocidos. Nunca imagine que algún día yo también estuviera como predicador de misiones. Me gustaría darles un resumen del mensaje que he sembrado en varias parroquias. Las misiones no son para repetir doctrina, sino para evangelizar a los bautizados. Con cinco temas se puede evangelizar a los bautizados recordándoles los cinco puntos claves del Evangelio cristiano: 1) Dios nos ama y nos hizo para él; 2) Nosotros hemos pecado y sufrimos las consecuencias; 3) Dios nos manda a su Hijo para librarnos del mal; 4) Jesús desea formar parte de nuestras vidas personales, ¡invitémoslo! y 5) Jesús llena nuestro corazón con el poder y la presencia de su Espíritu.
