Governor’s Welcome

Fellow Kiwanians, Welcome to the Pennsylvania District Convention and the

Valley Forge Area!

The convention committee has worked diligently to provide

you with an enjoyable visit to southeastern Pennsylvania. I

hope that you will have an opportunity to visit with friends,

visit this historic area, and expand your Kiwanis knowledge and experience.

Here at the convention center, I hope you will make time to visit the Pennsylvania Kiwanis

Foundation basket room, learn through Kiwanis forums, and participate in the many other

offerings around the convention center designed to enhance your Kiwanis experience.

You are in the heart of one of the most historic areas of the entire United States. Take the

opportunity to experience our country’s rich past by visiting the many historic venues

available. The Valley Forge National Historic Park is only a couple minutes away from the

convention center and the convention committee has arranged for a tour of the National

Constitution Center where the history of the United States of America comes to life on a

daily basis.

Whatever you choose to do here in Valley Forge, it is my wish that you will forge a lifetime of

memories at the convention!

Mark E Mishinski

Speakers

Liz Scott

Liz Scott is the Co-Executive Director of the Foundation, but she is most proud of her title of

"Mom" to her three sons, (Patrick, Eddie, and Joey) and her daughter Alex (our founder).

When Alex decided to hold a lemonade stand to help other children with cancer, Liz and her

husband Jay, were happy to serve as her helpers! Along with helping Alex host her yearly

lemonade stands, Liz and her family soon found themselves answering emails and phone

calls, planning fundraising events, and helping to organize the early grassroots efforts of

Alex's Lemonade Stand.

Today, Liz is honored to work alongside her husband Jay, the staff and board of directors,

as well as the dedicated sponsors and supporters as they continue to fight childhood cancer, one cup at a time! Liz is frequently sought after to speak to a variety of groups

including businesses, schools and community groups, in addition to participating on panels

at national conferences. Liz tailors her presentation to the audience whether they are

individuals at the United Nations, students at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School

or elementary school children and their parents. Her speaking topics include the story of

Alex as the impetus for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation; how to make a difference and

meaningful impact; the power of one; caregiving for a child with cancer and other topics related to Alex and her inspiration.

Have you ever gone un-showered for days, fought with

your husband over who works harder, picked a child’s nose or had a kid pee on you? Then you won’t want to miss “One

Funny Mother: I’m Not Crazy!!” Dena Blizzard’s hilarious,

truthful look at the life of the average mom will make you

realize that YOU’RE NOT CRAZY… motherhood is. Through

stories, music and videos, Dena describes a life you will

swear is your own. There is nothing better than listening to

another parent’s stories about “losing it” in public or

completely failing as a mother and hiding from your kids in

the bathroom.

always gives 100 percent – especially when it comes to Kiwanis and Circle K.

We are extremely proud to nominate RANDY GEERING for the Kiwanis Hero award in

recognition of the work he does not only for his home Kiwanis club, but also his Circle K,

Division 1, and Erie 2015. Randy goes above and beyond to give his valuable time and talents.

His dedication and leadership to Kiwanis are truly remarkable.

Kiwanis Heroes Award Recipient Name: Nancy Fishman

Division: 13S

Kiwanis Club: Carlisle

Kiwanis Activities (Offices Held, Committees, Years of Membership)

Member, Kiwanis Club of Carlisle since 2006

Director, Kiwanis Club of Carlisle 2010-13

Member, Kiwanis International Early Childhood Development/

Young Children Priority One Committee, 2013-2015

Community Involvement (Projects, Organizations, etc.)

President, Carlisle Area School Board, member since 2003

Board member, Carlisle Family YMCA

Board member, YWCA Carlisle

Board member, Cumberland Shared Housing

Reason for Recognition:

Nancy has been instrumental in the development of the Kiwanis efforts with early childhood

learning and development in Pennsylvania, the partnership Kiwanis has formed with the

Pennsylvania Early Learning Investment Commission and the Office of Child Development

and Early Learning (OCDEL) in the Pennsylvania State Government. Nancy has provided direction, support and ideas that have taken our efforts to a point where Kiwanis in

Pennsylvania is known as a resource and leader. Nancy has traveled to Kiwanis club

meetings, been a presenter at several Kiwanis Midwinter Conferences and District

Conventions and done a lot of “heavy lifting” that has provided critical support and

education for Kiwanis in our efforts for children. She has, also, given Kiwanis opportunities to develop relationships with other child focused groups which we might not have otherwise

been able to form. For this reason, the Pennsylvania District presented Nancy with a

Kiwanis Hero is Service award at the 2014 Midwinter Conference.

Kiwanis Heroes Award Recipient Name: Susan Werner

Division: 16

Kiwanis Club: Greater Reading-Berks County

Kiwanis Activities (Offices Held, Committees, Years of Membership

Club President (1994-95 and 2009-10)

Club Secretary (12 years)

Div. 16 Lt. Governor (1998-99 and 2001-02)

Region V Trustee (Oct. 1, 2004 – Sept 30, 2008) Reason for Recognition:

Division 16 Clubs would like to nominate Susan Werner for the Kiwanis Hero award for her

dedication to Kiwanis over her nearly 30 years of involvement in the Kiwanis Family. Susan

joined Kiwanis in 1993, but prior to that was an active member of Key Club from 1985 to

1988, and supported her local Kiwanis Club during the summers when she was home from

college. Susan not only holds office, but also actively volunteers in and chairs club projects,

from peddling chicken dinners, ice cream, meatballs sandwiches, entertainment books, etc.,

to raking leaves at the Easter Seals playground, calling bingo for the senior citizens, hiding

easter eggs for our community egg hunt, carrying groceries to cars at the local food

ministry, and cooking hot dogs at our annual scholarship picnic (just to name a few things

she participates in). She is always willing to roll up her sleeves and dig in with whatever it takes to help. On the Division level she promotes our annual Dutch Apple fundraiser (this

year benefitting Eliminate) and participates in the annual Division 16 Trivia contest, along with actively participating in council meetings.

But above all else, Susan is a Kiwanis Hero because of the example she sets by involving her

family. Her husband is a member of Kiwanis, and from the time they were infants, her kids

have participated in the service projects that her Kiwanis Club supports. Over the years, it was not uncommon to see her toting one of her kids along in a stroller or car seat to a

meeting or service project, and to this day her older kids (now teenagers) still frequently

come out to help at club projects. Her willingness to expose her children to community

service from a young age has molded her club’s into a family-friendly atmosphere and sets

an example for others to do the same. For all that she does and the example she sets, Susan is a Kiwanis Hero.

Division: 18

Kiwanis Club: Lehigh Valley Industrial Park Kiwanis Club

Kiwanis Activities (Offices Held, Committees, Years of Membership)

Kiwanis member since 1999

Club Secretary since 2003

Distinguished Club Secretary – four times including 2012-2013

Associate coordinator for annual craft fair & pancake breakfast

Rose sale logistics

Kiwanis International Conventions

PA District Conventions and mid-winter sessions

Region 6 meetings registration coordinator

Hixson Fellow and Walter Zeller Fellowship

Community Involvement (Projects, Organizations, etc.)

Aided in opening 3 new Kiwanis Clubs in Region 6

Reason for Recognition: In addition to being an outstanding Club Secretary, Jane embodies the objects of Kiwanis

whether working with BSA or Kiwanis where she always has the welfare of the children foremost in her daily attitude and actions.

Our soft spoken secretary definitely found a strong voice of reason that held her club on

task to execute one of our main fund raisers. Her concern “how will we be able to help the

children if we don’t raise the monies needed”. Jane’s take charge attitude helped to provide

the leadership needed for a successful fundraiser for our “Kids Project”. Jane has always

worked for the children.

Jane has been a staunch supporter of husband Chas throughout his work/endeavors for

Division 18 as Lt. Govenor, Trustee and District Education Chair.

These are the reasons LVIP Kiwanis Club is so very proud and honored to nominate Jane as

a Kiwanis Hero in Service for Div. 18. She is truly our Hero!

used as the Division 21 Kiwanis office and his car boasts the PA License: Kiwanis. A hero is
