Tentative Schedule of events at DCON 2014

As you can see, the schedule for Convention is rather hectic. Key Clubbers are up very early in the morning and kept going until the early hours of the morning. From my experiences, many people don’t end up going to sleep until way past curfew. My suggestion would be to bring some snacks and games to occupy you and your roommate’s time after curfew until you decide to go to sleep. Another thing to consider is the dress code for Convention. After each session I included the required dress code for the session. Make sure you adhere to that dress code since our Sergeant-at-Arms committee member will send you back up to your room to change if your dress is inappropriate.

DCON has rolled around once again! So it’s time to suit up, put on that blazer, and get ready for that opening night dance. This year the dance will be titled “Le Club Bleu”; be sure to bring blue to support The Eliminate Project. The opening night dance is always the liveliest so make sure to pack that favorite blue shirt and get ready to dance the night away! But let’s be honest, you came to DCON to help make your Key Club bigger and better than ever (you want to win that Single Service Award or perhaps snag that spirit stick) if that’s the case make sure to stop by the service fair. Service organizations from all around the world have to come to bring you fresh ideas, and several NJ Key Clubs have come to spread their own successes. This is the place to go if you’re looking to go to ICON or find ways to work with our preferred charities. YUDA bands will be selling their signature product YUDA bands and (this is brand new) Operation Cupcakes will be selling cupcakes. Hurry though; the service fair is only open until dinnertime at 5pm! Friday night also marks the beginning of campaigning for those running for district office, and the due date for all contests materials. Lastly, make sure to arrive between the times of 1-5pm with all the signed forms, Key Clubbers, and their chaperones ready for the best weekend of the year!

So the Saturday is the busiest day of convention. Which makes sense since it’s the only full day of Convention. Breakfast is early and everyone is tired from the first late night of the weekend, but the rooms are full of an energy that only Key Clubbers are known for. Saturday morning we have the Meet the candidates session of convention, where we get to hear all of the candidates running for Executive office speak again. After we hear each candidates speak and answer questions we get to hear the gubernatorial debate. After the Meet the Candidates Session everyone attends workshops. With workshops ranging from officer training and Key Club 411 to College Tips and dancing around the world, there is something to be learned by all! Each workshop is about half an hour long, and are taught by yours truly, the NJDB! The Saturday Appreciation Session is the first awards session of the day where we cheer on the distinguished officers who made this year the best yet. We also get to hear several presentations on the K-Family and International Convention, so you definitely won’t want to miss those! After the Saturday Appreciation Session ends, everyone gets free time to do whatever they want. You can choose to compete in the talent show, or the oratorical, or impromptu essay contests, or just walk around Pier Village with your new friends! At 4:00 all the delegates of the convention will convene to elect next years District Officers. After dinner that night, everyone will convene for the formal Saturday Night Awards Session. Many clubs and Officers will be awarded and recognized for their hard work and great achievements this year, and afterwards everyone goes to dance the night away at the Governor’s Ball. At the Ball you can also bid to dance with District Board Members!

The main purpose of Sunday is to say farewell. To both your new friends you made, as well as the old District Board . We start the day with the Eliminate walk along the boardwalk (see the donation page in this newsletter), and breakfast and then we convene for our Farewell Session. Note that this is the only session you are allowed to wear casual, provided you are wearing your convention shirt. Expect a lot of crying during the session, both of happiness and sadness. The result of the elections will be revealed and the 2014-2015 Officers will be installed. Also, scholarships will be given out, and clubs will be recognized for their work hosting District events this year. I hope these articles better help you understand what goes on during convention, and I hope you all have the best time there!

March 28-30 – 68th Annual District Convention!

We are Canada

Key Club International truly is an international organization, with branches in over 30 nations across the globe! This year’s annual District Convention theme is “Destination: Service”. As such, each division has been assigned a country to represent them at the convention. This will be the identifier for where to sit during convention and such, but I think we as division can take it one step further! During convention try and bring out your inner Canadian! Try wearing some red and white throughout the convention and showing your divisional pride! Also, throughout the convention if you hear someone shout, “Canada, how do you feel?!” you should be ready to hop out of your seat and scream, “WE FEEL GOOD, OH WE FEEL SO GOOD!” or something along those lines! A large part of convention is how much spirit each division can show throughout the length of the convention (much like Fall Rally). Every year the divisions out do themselves in order to win the spirit stick, and I think this year our division can be the loudest, proudest, and most spirited in the mighty, mighty New Jersey District!
