In 2009 NAHJ turned its Annual Conventioninto a true multimedia journ a l i s mexperience. Thirt y - t h ree sessions—morethan half of the convention’s off e r i n g s —w e re multimedia skills training or onlinerelated sessions to help its membersremain in journalism, offer re s o u rces todo journalism on their own, and becomem o re marketable in this changing medial a n d s c a p e .

ONLINE CAREER CENTER

NAHJ launched its new Career Centerin April 2009. Members can nowupload their resumes and viewlistings for jobs, fellowships andinternships. Our new fullysearchable Career Center alsomakes it easier for employers topromote freelancing opportunities and jobsthat are suited for and are seekingpeople with journalism experience.

NAHJ SOCIAL NETWORKS

NAHJ jumped into the world of socialmedia with a splash! We are activelyTwittering, we have launched ouro fficial networking site “La Plaza NAHJ”in conjunction with iHispano.com, wef o rmed a NING site for the 2009convention and we have a Facebook fanpage with over 2,000 members. We alsonow have a Yo u Tube channel to sharevideos from NAHJ’s events.

PARITY PROJECT

Through our flagship program we haveestablished closer ties between the mediaand the Latino communities in 25 cities,boosting the number of Latinos innewsrooms while ensuring that thecommunity was part of the process.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

NAHJ awarded $91,000 in new scholarships in 2009 to 31students pursing a career in journalism. In addition, NAHJb rought 40 students and 30 mentors to San Juan to conduct thefirst truly converged multimedia training project in which allstudents completed multimedia packages while receiving trainingt o w a rds becoming a more well-versed backpack journ a l i s t .

MEDIA ADVOCACY

NAHJ signed on with amovement spearheaded bythe nonprofit organizationFree Press urging PresidentObama and the newAdministration to fulfill itspromises of an open mediasystem. Also very early on NAHJcalled on the media to be fairand prudent when covering thespread of swine flu, and resist theportrayal of Mexican immigrantsas scapegoats for the possiblepandemic.

CONVENTION STUDENT PROGRAMS

STUDENT CAMPUS

This intensive, three-day program is conducted at a localcollege or university and is designed for college students in theearly stages of their career development. The 25 students inthis program participate in training, tours, mock pressconferences and career-building exercises in classrooms,television studios, media outlets, the streets andneighborhoods of Denver, and government or other types ofinstitutions. The program also features workshops andseminars on journalism ethics, obtaining newsroom internships,how to make the most out of the networking experience atthe convention and on various ways to tell a good story in thisage of multimedia journalism. Journalism professors andprofessionals offer the students a real perspective on theworking world of journalism today and helps them gainawareness of their respective communities.

STUDENT PROJECTS

NAHJ has developed a converged model for its long-timemedia training project that features a team of students andmedia professionals working in a newsroom setting andprovides students with a great opportunity to get hands-ontraining in daily journalism. The Latinoreporterdigital.orgwebsite will deliver constantly updated breaking news andinformation produced by the projects, which will operate as asingle newsroom. Forty student journalists will get front-endtraining in the skills needed to create and distribute news andinformation in today’s changing environment. The students willfocus on producing content for the interactive website, but willalso produce a 30 minute TV newscast and radio podcasts thatwill stream on-demand over the web. Students will additionallyproduce two issues of a newspaper. The project team willproduce blogs, videos, slide shows and deliver news via mobileand social networking technologies, all while sharpening theirjournalistic skills.

LATINO REPORTER DIGITAL

This program offers students the chance to build a Web sitefrom the ground up while covering the daily activities of theconvention. The students work with online media professionalsin each phase of the comprehensive site which includesnewsgathering, site design and maintenance.

THE LATINO REPORTER Y EL REPORTEROLATINO

Students get an opportunity to write, edit, lay out and producea newspaper covering the convention and the community.Students work as reporters, photographers, copy editors andgraphic artists under the supervision of professional journaliststo publish newspapers in both English and Spanish.

EL NOTICIERO

B roadcast journalism students produce a television newscastthat focuses both on the convention and community and mediaissues. The project trains potential re p o rters, videographers,p roducers and editors on techniques involved in producing atelevision news broadcast in both English and Spanish.

RADIO ONDAS

Students serve as on-air reporters, anchors and producers tocreate stories for traditional radio and the Web. They learn toproduce all of their work using the latest digital editing andproducing software with the final product being a high-qualityradio program in both English and Spanish.

Corporate events paid for outside this contract do notconstitute NAHJ convention sponsorship. Exhibit spaceassignment is based on total support to NAHJ, level ofconvention sponsorship, tenure of recruiting, timeliness ofreceiving payment and contract, and size and configuration ofexhibit. NAHJ reserves the right to reassign exhibit space so asto ensure the safety and/or convenience of conventionparticipants as well as to avoid conflict of products and/orexhibitors. Exhibit(s) must be confined to-and-within thespace(s) leased. NAHJ reserves the right to assign advertisingspace.
