Our Challenge: The Ofsted regional report, 2014 said: …the proportion of pupils attaining the expected standard in Yorkshire and Humber is the lowest of all the regions in England. Therefore, we have designed a provocative day based on collaborative enquiry, facilitated by local, regional, national and international educators. The conference will provide opportunities for school leaders and system leaders to work and learn together, to explore how we can have greater impact on improving the quality of education for all the children and students across our region.

The overarching theme is based on the research by Michael Fullan in ‘The Principal’ (2014), where he states that headteachers and principals are the second most crucial in-school influencers (after teachers) on student learning. He explores what the headteacher/principal needs do to maximise student achievement and proposes that there are three keys to maximising their impact i.e.

Key One

Leading Learning

Key Two

Being a System Player

Key Three

Becoming a Change Agent

‘The Principal’ book is a synthesis of previous work by Fullan, particularly his work on Professional Capital and is an inspiring and coherent insight into the key drivers needed for school and system improvement. Participants at the conference will receive a complimentary copy of the book, which also contains useful reflection and action items which are helpful when taking a personal health check of the impact of our own leadership and supports those who are working with other leaders.

Conference enquiry question

To effectively create deep and wide impact what do you, your TSA and Y&H TSAs need to do in relation to:

– Leading learning?

– Being a system player that creates a culture and practice of continuous learning for all?

– Acting as a change agent?
