Yorkshire and The Humber is home to a hub of regional activity which spans the whole lifecycle of an offshore wind farm. With four projects which have consent and a further two projects totalling 3.4GW yet to be developed, the area is truly at the heart of the offshore wind industry in the UK.

The Humber has experienced a buzz of activity around offshore wind; from Siemens’ £160m pound investment at Alexandra Dock to the current operations and maintenance activity of existing offshore wind farms across to DONG Energy’s Hornsea Project One- the world’s first offshore wind farm to exceed 1 gigawatt. The area has experienced significant investment which has revitalised the economy in the local area and resulted in a number of contract awards to UK companies doing business in offshore wind.

Our vision is of renewable energy playing a leading role in powering the UK. RenewableUK is the UK’s leading renewable energy trade association, specialising in onshore wind, offshore wind and wave & tidal energy. Formed in 1978, we have an established, large corporate membership ranging from small independent companies, to large international corporations and manufacturers.

Acting as a central point of information and a united, representative voice for our membership, we conduct research; find solutions; organise events, facilitate business development, lobby and promote wind and marine renewables to government, industry, the media and the public.

Offshore Wind Week Partners

RenewableUK Members engaged in offshore wind in Yorkshire and The Humber include:

Advanced Industrial Solutions (AIS), AECOM, Andrew Jackson, Arcadis LLP, Bird Management Unit National, Bosch Rexroth, Celsa Energy, Centrica Energy, CWind, Dalby Offshore Services, Moventas UK, DFDS Seaways PLC, E.ON Climate & Renewables, Elev8 Access Platforms, UK, HCF CATCH, heightec, HETA (Humberside Engineering Training Association), HFR Solutions CIC, HOTA, Humber Renewables, ITM Power, James Fisher Marine Services, Marine Rescue Technologies, Mullion Survival Technology, RES, Schneider Electric, Siemens Energy, Tata Steel, University of Hull, WWL ALS

Offshore wind is an essential part of the UK’s energy mix and industrial strategy. Offshore wind already generates 5 per cent of the UK’s electricity and by 2020 this will double to over 10 per cent. Building out the current pipeline of offshore wind projects could supply over a third of the UK’s power needs. The industry is investing over £18bn in projects over the next five years and offshore wind will be one of the lowest cost sources of new power in the 2020s.

RenewableUK and partner companies are working to deliver Offshore Wind Week 2016, which will run from 31 October to 4 November and celebrate the growth of this industry and the benefits it is delivering for Britain. Bringing together companies from across the UK, Offshore Wind Week aims to help deepen policymakers understanding of, and support for, the offshore wind industry.

Offshore Wind in Yorkshire and The Humber

DONG Energy Grimsby

In September 2016, DONG Energy announced plans for a new multi-million pound investment in Grimsby to create the UK’s largest ever offshore wind operations and maintenance hub. The new facility will be developed in Grimsby’s Royal Dock and will initially support the Westermost Rough, Race Bank and Hornsea Project One offshore wind farms. The hub will include a marine and helicopter coordination centre capable of providing 24–7 service to offshore operations across the UK and beyond. DONG Energy already has a team of around 50 people working on the operation of Westermost Rough, and a construction base in the Grimsby Fish Dock from which Race Bank is being built.

GEV Wind PowerHessle

GEV Wind Power are a turbine maintenance company specialising in blade inspection and repair. The company have a number of highly trained technicians who have worked on windfarms across the UK, Belgium, Germany and Denmark.

REDS Marine Ltd Grimsby

REDS Marine first started work in offshore wind in 2007 with a contract award at Barrow Offshore Wind Farm providing cable remediation and support services. In 2016, REDS Marine announced plans for a £250 000 investment in an offshore support base in Grimsby.

AMS No-Dig Scunthorpe

AMS No-Dig were awarded a contract from DONG Energy to design, supply and install cable ducts for Hornsea Project One.

SiemensAlexandra Dock, Hull

Siemens are investing around £160m in the Green Port Hull facility, which forms part of a £310m combined investment from Siemens and ABP which will result in the creation of 1000 direct jobs in the UK. There are three significant elements across the 54 hectare site at Green Port Hull:

1. Project execution site at Alexandra Dock

2. Blade manufacturing facility at Alexandra Dock

3. Logistics and distribution centre to support service activity

Key contract awards to UK companies:

• Volker Fitzpatrick: Main contractor for construction of Blade factory

• Neville Tucker Heating: £13m contract for Mechanical & Electrical works

• Clugston: £11m contract for construction of Service Warehouse

• Hull College Group: £1m contract for training

• ALE: £43m framework for deployment of cranes, specialised transport equipment and personnel

• Street Cranes: £3.3m contract for supply of overhead cranes

• Turner Timber Frames: £650k contract for supply of timber walk-ways

The first blades will be produced by the factory shortly and future production will support both UK and overseas projects.

Boston EnergyBeverley

Boston Energy supplies engineers and technicians to the offshore wind industry. The company are able to support pre-assembly, installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance activities. Boston Energy is currently supporting MHI Vestas Offshore Wind in their pre-assembly of the Burbo Bank Extension and Siemens Projects team in the Hull pre-assembly site for Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm.

RESGrimsby

RES has long had a presence in Grimsby, and the scale of its operations in the area led the company to decide to build a permanent O&M base in Grimsby. RES provides operations and maintenance support to a number of wind farms near the coast. RES also recently signed a contract to service the meteorological mast for the Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration Project (near the Northumberland coast), which its Grimsby team will work on. The team also does similar work for the proposed Hornsea and Dogger Bank offshore wind projects.

3Offshore Support The Humber and Yorkshire has a wealth of companies who are supplying, managing and operating wind support vessels. Dunston Ship Builders, Rix Sea Shuttle , MMS Ship Repair and Mainprize Offshore have all supported offshore wind projects across Europe. Mainprize Offshore based in Scarborough have supported over 20 windfarms across the UK, The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. Hull based Rix Sea Shuttle provide personnel and equipment transfer to offshore wind farms. Most recently they have won a £2m contract for the supply of crew transfer vessels to Statoil’s Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm.

Project Spotlight Hornsea Projects —DONG Energy DONG Energy is currently constructing Hornsea Project One off the Yorkshire coast, which will have a capacity of 1.2GW and will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm when operational. Balfour Beatty has been awarded a contract for the onshore substation which will be located in North Killingholme in North Lincolnshire. More than £25 million of work is planned under this contract. There are further Hornsea projects in the pipeline as well. Hornsea Project Two was recently granted development consent and will have a capacity of up to 1.8GW. Hornsea Project Three, located to the east of Project One and Project Two, is currently in consultation and has a maximum capacity of 2.4GW.
