DECEMBER 2010

Welcome from your chairmanNovember’s ‘On the Ball’ event at the KC Stadium was a great way to end our networking sessions this year. More than 40 people from across the Humber turned out to hear Hull City’s chief executive, Mark McGuire, share details of his aspirations for the 2010 season and beyond. And, with news of Assam and Ehab Allam’s plans for an imminent takeover, our uncanny ability to time our events around important announcements is becoming legendary.

This has been our busiest and best year yet. More events and greater participation than any other year has made 2010 a benchmark for IOD East Yorkshire (Humber). Thank you for your ongoing support.

This edition of IOD Connect reflects on the year that was. Hopefully 2011 will get off to the same start and we can build on this year’s achievements. We hope you enjoyed being involved. Please let us know if there’s anything specifically you want, need or expect in 2011. Meanwhile, on behalf of everyone associated with the Branch, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and successful New Year.

Richard TuplinChairman, IoD East Yorkshire (Humber)

On 17 November 2010, the KC Stadium played host to IOD East Yorkshire and Humber’s 7th event of the year. Mark McGuire, who was former CEO at Stockport County before joining the Tigers, gave an interesting insight into how a football club is run and the financial challenges associated with both Championship and Premiership football. Amongst a wide range of issues discussed, Hull City’s new CEO explained how it can take years to build the capacity and resources to complete at the top level – likening Hull City’s proposed approach to that of West Bromwich Albion who have yo-yoed between the Premiership and Championship for a number of years. Mark and his team’s immediate priorities are to keep Hull City on a sound financial footing and consolidation before pushing on again towards football’s top flight. Mark’s experience at Stockport County will stand him in good stead for the challenges ahead at Hull City. Stockport, was owned by a supporter’s trust (believed to be one of the most challenging football environments in which to operate) so managing expectations

surrounding difficult financial conditions linked to a strong desire for immediate success was an exceptional grounding for what lies ahead in his new role. Andrew Acum, a director at local communications agency, Mercury, is an avid Hull City supporter. He attended the event and found Mark’s proposals and suggested approach to be very encouraging. Andrew said: “It seems that the club’s financial structure and approach has changed significantly since Adam Pearson joined the club. Following Mark’s assessment of where the club is today and what is planned for the future there is much hope for optimism in the future. It was a very enjoyable and informative event and a great way for IOD Yorkshire and Humber to round off its in 2010.“ Event Photo Gallery >>

Investing in our future generationsThis year, we launched a new initiative designed to help students across the sub-region. The initiative sought support from IOD members to go into schools to talk to pupils about their work and what they can expect should they choose that sector as part of their career path. A register was then made available to schools to allow them to choose possible speakers to engage, educate and inspire their pupils.

The pool of speakers was selected after consultation with businesses and their employees to help develop a powerful careers resource for schools – providing valuable careers information for students by answering simple questions about job roles and the working environment. Some of the benefits included:

Corporate Social ResponsibilitySupporting local schools and students by donating time and providing career information.

Engage With SchoolsA positive way to connect with schools and their community members.

Employees of the FutureProviding apprenticeship and work placement opportunities to students in the area, offering a route to harness fresh new talent.

This proved to be an ideal opportunity for students to access information and real-life stories about different careers direct from professionals. Students also remarked that it was a great way for them to hear stories about how people have got to where they are in their career. A ‘Day in the Life’ session allowed businesses and their employees to illustrate a typical day at work, for pupils to then understand exactly what the job entails as well as gathering firsthand information on their chosen career.

Paragon Data Services’ managing director, and IOD member, Iain Bland was recently named Young Businessperson of the Year at the 2010 Mail News & Media Business Awards.

The award recognises Iain as a leading business figure in the city of Hull, taking over PDS in 2006 and increasing turnover to in excess of £1.4 million at the end of the last financial year. Iain was presented the award after overcoming plenty of stiff competition, with the region’s business people out to prove that, despite the current economic climate, business in Hull is thriving.

Under Iain’s leadership, PDS continues to achieve new contract wins, allowing the business to continually grow and expand, and ultimately ensuring that the profile of the business is raised. These contracts include Nightel Hotel, a new hotel located next to Humberside Airport, which represented PDS’ first successful joint venture with another local business.

The success that PDS has achieved under Iain has enabled the company to recruit on a regular basis, with the team currently consisting of 30 people and further

expansion anticipated to manage its ever-increasing workload.

Indeed, PDS has also just been awarded a contract on a £50m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme, to provide the network infrastructure and fibre optics at the new Sirius Academy and Ganton Special School. PDS tendered for the work and was awarded the contract by mechanical and electrical specialist Balfour Beatty Engineering Services. Iain said: “We are really thrilled to be working on such a significant project so close to home. As a Hull born and bred business, it’s a real honour to be carrying out projects of this scale.”

Meanwhile, Paragon Data Services (PDS) has just completed over £15,000 worth of work on the £3.5m refurbishment of Hallmark Hotel, in North Ferriby. The company has completed work including everything from the installation of public address and music systems, through to AV solutions for the conference facilities at the hotel. Iain has also worked tirelessly for local charity groups, particularly KCFM’s The Smile Foundation, by arranging a charity golf day and running a 10k race, to help PDS raise over £5,000 for the foundation.
