Page 1: Year 2 curriculum evening presentation for parents. · 2019-03-05 · Phonics At Gresham, we teach ‘Letters and Sounds’ Phonics. Over this year the children will be revising some

Transition The childrenrsquos day is more structured with a distinct

separation between play and learning

Childrenrsquos learning is compartmentalised into clear subjects

Children are expected to sit for longer periods

Children have less choice in deciding how they learn

Homework

Spellings will also be given out every Friday

A spelling test will be given on the following

Friday

The spellings are based upon key words or the

phonics the children will be learning in that week

Daily reading

English Maths IPC homework

SPAG My Maths Lexia

Not everything has to be handed in

Phonics At Gresham we teach lsquoLetters and Soundsrsquo Phonics

Over this year the children will be revising some of

Phase 3 and 4 and completing Phase 5 of this

synthetic phonics scheme

A 20 minute Phonics lesson is taught every morning

These include word hunts interactive games word

building and sentence work

The children are encouraged to understand and use

a phoneme frame and sound buttons in order to

blend and segment for reading and writing

Phonics Screening Check The Year 1 phonics screening check is a short

assessment to confirm whether individual pupils

have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate

standard ie 32 words out of 40 read

correctly(June)

The check will identify children who need further

support An opportunity to retake the check will be

given in Year 2

Some sounds are represented by two or three letters put together eg igh (night) ai (rain)

Some sounds have more than one way of being written

igh right pie kite fly

ai play cake straight eight

Some DefinitionsPhonemes are the smallest unit of speech-sounds which make up

a word If you change a phoneme in a word you would

change its meaning

For example there are three phonemes in the word sit s-i-t

If you change the phoneme s for f you have a new

word fit If you change the phoneme t in fit for a sh you have a new word fish - f-i-sh

Graphemes These are the letters that represent the

phoneme The grapheme could be 1 letter 2 letters or more

eg igh ai air

Reading -BlendingSounds (phonemes) and the letter letters that make

them (grapheme) are pronounced in isolation and

blended together Blending is recognising the letter

sounds in a written word and merging them in the

order in which they are written to pronounce the

word lsquocuprsquo

For example c-u-p c-a-t

Writing- SegmentingWords are segmented into sounds orally and

a letter (grapheme)

written to represent each sound (phoneme)

Segmenting is identifying the individual sounds

in a spoken work

(lsquohimrsquo h-i-m) and writing down letters for each

sound to form the word

Pronunciation of Sounds Children are taught to pronounce sounds clearly

Reading -BlendingSounds (phonemes) and the letter letters that make

them (grapheme) are pronounced in isolation and

blended together Blending is recognising the letter

sounds in a written word and merging them in the

order in which they are written to pronounce the

word lsquocuprsquo

For example c-u-p c-a-t

Writing- SegmentingWords are segmented into sounds orally and

a letter (grapheme)

written to represent each sound (phoneme)

Segmenting is identifying the individual sounds

in a spoken work

(lsquohimrsquo h-i-m) and writing down letters for each

sound to form the word

Pronunciation of Sounds Children are taught to pronounce sounds clearly
