• To develop your confidence in helping your children with phonics and reading

• To show examples of activities and resources we use to teach phonics

What is phonics and how can I help my child at home?

Page 4: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Phonics is all about using …

skills for reading and

spelling

knowledge of the alphabet

+

Learning phonics will help your child to become a good reader and writer.

Page 5: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Phonics WordsYour children will learn to use

the term:

phoneme

Phonemes are the separate sounds that can be heard in words

e.g. c-a-t

b-oa-t

Page 6: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Saying the phonemes

• Phonemes should be articulated clearly and precisely.

• There are actions to go with most of the sounds – demo/sheet

Page 7: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Say the sounds

•d m h s ch

•ng ee igh er ai

Page 8: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Your turn !

Use the sheet to try out the sounds and actions

Page 9: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Phonics Words

Blending for reading

• Children need to be able to hear the separate phonemes in a word and then blend them together to say the whole word .

Page 10: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Blending

/b/ /e/ /d/ = bed

/t/ /i/ /n/ = tin

/m/ /u/ /g/ = mug

Page 11: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

What’s in the box ?

How many phonemes are in these words?

Page 12: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Like this…..

• There are 3 phonemes in this word

eal f

Page 13: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Try blending to read these words to read them

gorspring phighly

thoack implode straight

Phonics Words

Segmenting(for spelling)

• Children need to be able to hear a whole word and say

every sound that they hear .

When they can do this and recall most of phonemes they need- they are well on their way to being independent writers.

Page 15: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Segmenting

bed = /b/ /e/ /d/

tin= /t/ /i/ /n/

mug= /m/ /u/ /g/

Phonics WordsYour children will learn to

use the term:

grapheme This is how a

phoneme is written down – could be 1 letter or 2 or 3

h ch igh

Page 17: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Phonics WordsYour children will learn to use the

term:

digraph

This means that the phoneme comprises of two letters

e.g. ll, ff, ck, ss

Page 18: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Tricky Words

There are many words that cannot be blended

or segmented because they are irregular.

the was said you some

We learn these as whole words.

Page 19: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Phase 3:Learning the long vowel phonemes

• Children will enter phase 3 once they know the first 19 phonemes and can blend and segment to read and spell CVC words.

• They will learn another 26 phonemes:• j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu• ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar,

or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er They learn to read words like- pain, thing, beard, coins, sure etc

Page 20: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Phonics WordsYour children will learn to use

the term:

Trigraph

This means that the phoneme comprises of three letters

e.g. igh , ear, ure

Page 21: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Phase 4: Year 1Introducing consonant clusters: reading

and spelling words with four or more phonemes

• Children move into phase 4 when they know all the phonemes from phases 2 and 3 and can use them to read and spell simple words (blending to read and segmenting to spell).

• Phase 4 doesn’t introduce any new phonemes. • It focuses on reading and spelling longer words with

the phonemes they already know.• These words have consonant clusters at the

beginning: sport, trip, clap, green, clown…or at the end: tent, mend, damp, burnt …or at the beginning and end! trust, spend,

twist.

Phase 5- where it gets complicated…. Still Yr 1!!

• Teach new graphemes for reading •ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, wh, ph, ew, oe, au, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-eLearn alternative pronunciations of graphemes (the same grapheme can represent more than one phoneme):

Fin/find, hot/cold, cat/cent, got/giant, but/put, cow/blow, tie/field, eat/bread, farmer/her, hat/what, yes/by/very, chin/school/chef, out/shoulder/could/you. •.

Reading• Use the sounds and actions to support their

reading at home• Try to read for a short time every day or at

least 3 times a week• Make a comment about any phonemes

they are struggling with from banded books• Play phonic games on Phonics Play• Look at Mr Thorne does Phonics for info• Praise them all the time! eg.’I liked the way you blended those sounds in that word’• ‘Well done you remembered the igh sound!’

Page 30: Year 1 Phonics Workshop Westcliff Primary School 2013

Spelling: • Use the phonic mat to support independent

choices• Make phonic cards from Phonics Play for playing

games• Buy some magnetic letters for blending and

segmenting• When spelling, encourage your child to think about what “looks right”.• Practise tricky words• Have fun trying out different options…wipe

clean whiteboards/pens are good for trying out spellings.
