The Bricks and Water AppealCan you imagine how it must feel to have a child that is not likely to live to adulthood? So part of our care is to build happy memories for families to treasure forever.

But we know that although our care is second-to-none, our facilities could be better. And it was with this in mind that we have launched our Bricks & Water Appeal.

The project comprises two parts. The first element entails extensive refurbishment which will see the existing bedrooms completely revamped and en-suite bathrooms added to all. We will also create two further bedrooms, with more privacy catering for teenagers. This building work is the ‘Bricks’ part of the appeal.

Then comes what is perhaps the most exciting element, the ‘Water’: A portion of the £1.3m target will be allocated to building a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy unit. The benefits of hydrotherapy for children are too numerous to list, but include a dramatic increase and improvement in range of movement and mobility, maintenance of muscle strength, pain reduction, and, vitally, a chance to have fun.

Intensive Community Treatment and Key Working ServicesThe high point of the team’s year was winning the Chair’s commendation from the Kent Criminal Justice Board for their work across Kent.

New initiatives continue to be developed in response to service user needs including the introduction of modules on alcohol management and anger management. Links continue with adult education services and new community projects have been introduced including horse riding and equestrian care, archaeology, reading groups, cooking groups and an allotment project.

In October last year, KCA was awarded the Alcohol Treatment Requirement (ATR) contracts in East Kent and Medway, funded by the Kent Probation Service. This followed a successful pilot which demonstrated a significant reduction in alcohol consumption and crime rates. The team worked hard to establish the two programmes and, by April, 177 people had accessed the service, with many starting to complete their six month ATR orders.

Howard Cohn, Kent Probation Service Commissioner said:

KCA has consistently provided a high level of flexibility and responsiveness to our requirements. An initial ATR pilot project in Thanet has since spread and been extended across Eastern & Coastal Kent and Medway, with a high level of successful offender management and ATR completions.
