YWCA ST. JOSEPH

MissionYWCA St. Joseph is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting

peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

“It Starts with Us” is the theme for our 2020 Women of Excellence Awards Program. YWCA St. Joseph has been operating from this mindset since our beginning in 1888. We truly believe that each of us has the power to change our world for the better. Our

community is blessed with like-minded individuals who share in this philosophy, as well as our mission to eliminate racism and empower women. Today, we recognize and celebrate women who exemplify the meaning of “It Starts with Us”.

The Women of Excellence Awards were inspired by Paul Revere’s iconic silver bowl, a contemporary yet timeless classic. Simon Pearce Crystal is handmade in the USA, lead-free and was selected for the 2017 Boston Marathon upper tier awards. The Simon

Steve’s ChallengeToday we are celebrating the 19th Annual Women of Excellence Awards Program. This event continues to recognize leadership in a variety of roles across this great community. Thank you for being a part of this special day.

As we embark on new territory in many aspects of our lives, we recognize the potential impact in our fundraising efforts. Although today’s program looks quite different than years past, the importance of this initiative still remains. Your support is vital in assisting the YWCA St. Joseph in continuing their efforts to provide essential services to women, children and families. I am pleased to announce this year I will once again be a part of today’s fundraising effort, for the 13th year.

Upon airing of this awards program, I will match the monies raised for the day, dollar-for-dollar, up to $30,000. Last year, our centerpiece auction raised around $60,000 the day of the event! This assisted us in meeting our overall goal of $200,000. We recognize that this year has been a tremendous challenge for most of us. However, I hope that you will still be able to assist the YWCA in raising the funds in order to continue helping women and families, with life changing services. The work of the YWCA doesn’t stop regardless of circumstances, regardless of a virus.

I encourage you to be a part of this great event and to continue to find ways to support our wonderful community. I would also like to extend my congratulations to all of the nominees and award recipients being honored today. Thank you for your outstanding leadership and service to St. Joseph.

On behalf of the YWCA St. Joseph, and all of the volunteers, I sincerely thank you!

- Steve Craig

I T S T A R T S W I T H U SI T S T A R T S W I T H U SThe Women of Excellence Awards Program is now entering our 19th year! We are excited that we are able to continue this tradition, although it looks quite different from past events. The theme for this year’s event is “It Starts with Us”. The theme was planned well before the pandemic and current civil rights crisis that is occurring in our country.

Our hearts are deeply saddened by the injustice and criminal acts committed against minorities and people of color. The YWCA St. Joseph is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. When we started in 1888, our founding mothers understood adversity and injustice and faced it boldly. Now, 132 years later, we continue the tradition of standing up for what is right and just. Just like those committed women who came before us, we recognize that change starts with us.

Since 1888, YWCA St. Joseph has been working to empower women and their families to help them reach their goals. Through the years, our programs and services have adapted to meet the changing needs of our community, but our mission to eliminate racism and empower women has remained constant. At YWCA St. Joseph, we strive to make a real impact in the lives of others. In this past year, we provided a safe haven for 345 women, 9 men and 257 children in our emergency shelter. In addition, our Victim Services programs answered 2,102 hotline calls, conducted 1,605 individual therapy sessions, assisted 296 survivors with advocacy services and provided 1,436 hours of case management. We housed 90 individuals through our Bliss Manor Supported Housing Program. We welcomed 63 children into our Discovery Childcare Program. Our Healthy Teen Parents/Healthy Babies Program supported and educated 44 teens and 37 children. Our CHOICES and DECISIONS programs mentored 247 seventh grade girls and boys with the help of 120 mentors from MWSU Athletics.

Our 200 plus volunteers helped to make our efforts possible! Volunteers provided diverse services ranging from mentoring a young teen, advocating for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault,

helping organize donations for our New Start store or assisting in the organization of a seasonal party. They embraced our mission and vision, just as we do, and understood that it started with them.

Today, we celebrate the women in our community who live out our theme in their daily lives. We see these unsung heroes making positive changes in our community – lending a helping hand to the homeless, supporting first responders, standing against injustice, educating children, adapting to the ever changing landscape around them – all while balancing a multitude of daily responsibilities. Today, we will recognize and lift up these women. Thank you for being part of this celebration!

GUEST SPEAKER

Sara Beth MyersAssistant United States Attorney, Middle District of Tennessee

Founder, Advocates for Women’s And Kids’ Equality

Our 2020 Women of Excellence speaker is Sara Beth Myers. Sara Beth is currently an Assistant United States Attorney in the white collar crime division for the Middle District of Tennessee. Although her home is now Nashville, her roots start in St. Joseph, Missouri, where her parents, Gary and Sally Myers, continue to live.

Sara Beth attended Bessie Ellison Elementary, Bode Middle School, and graduated from Central High School in 1999. Sara Beth’s drive to be a leader and set a precedent of high achievement has been apparent throughout her educational career. Earning the title of Student Body President and being a part of the National Honor Society were only a few of her many achievements.

Sara Beth gives her parents a great deal of credit for her determination and career choice. Her higher education began at Duke University, majoring in History and Russian. Sara Beth then went on to Yale University, where she obtained a Master of Arts in Russian and East European Studies in 2005. She went on to obtain her law degree at Vanderbilt University in 2009, where she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment and Technology Law. During her studies, Sara Beth was also able to become proficient in four languages: Russian, French, German, and Italian.

Her drive to succeed continued on into her career. Sara Beth started out as a paralegal for a bankruptcy practice group in New York City. She then went on to become a civil defense associate

attorney in Atlanta, Georgia. She moved to Nashville and became the Davidson County (Nashville) Assistant District Attorney in the domestic violence unit. This is where her passion to assist women and children became stronger and she continued her volunteer work. Her experience as an Assistant District Attorney led her to found a nonprofit, Advocates for Women’s And Kids’ Equality (AWAKE), which advocates for the advancement of women and kids through education and policy change. Sara Beth continues to serve as the President of AWAKE. Since its founding six years ago, AWAKE has become a state-wide force for positive change for women and kids and is making plans for regional and national expansion.

During her career, Sara Beth has prosecuted many cases and seeks justice for victims of heinous crimes. A case which Sara Beth handled that drew national attention was United States v. Tad Cummins, which involved the prosecution of a 52 year-old Tennessee teacher who fled the state with a 15 year-old student for several weeks. It is cases such as these that continue to drive Sara Beth to seek justice and help craft legislation to support and protect women and children.

Sara Beth resides in Nashville with her husband John and their two children Abby and Thomas.

In addition to serving as a Troop Leader, she has served as the Service Unit Treasurer, Day Camp Director and Troop Product Sales Manager. By focusing her troop activities to align with the 4 Girl Scout Pilar’s of Civic Engagement, STEM, Outdoor Experiences and Entrepreneurship, she’s created opportunities for her scouts to learn new skills, gain confidence and improve their community through volunteering. Her leadership with day camps gave girls, many from low-income families, the opportunity to participate in activities they would not, otherwise, have experienced. Heather’s dedication to Girl Scouts has helped more than 300 girls, in our community, gain courage, confidence and character to make their world a better place.

She currently serves as the Cinderella’s Closet Chair and oversees the collection and distribution of formal dresses and accessories to area high school girls to be able to attend Prom and Military Ball. In order to sustain the project, she has created contacts with individuals and companies that help provide needed resources. Breanna strives to make each girl feel special and has worked hard to enhance their dress “shopping” experience. She takes the time to connect with each participant to make sure they are getting the perfect dress and meets individually with those who can’t attend during the traditional giveaways. She encourages her co-workers to do their best through her supportive advice, respect for others and her treatment of the under-served. When the COVID-19 crisis developed, Lori transitioned to the COVID-19 triage station where she dressed head-to-toe in protective gear and thoroughly queried patients regarding their potential exposure. Throughout her COVID-19 role, she met adversity with grace by being thoughtful in her delivery of care and message. Regardless of her role at the clinic, she goes above and beyond for her patients, colleagues and workplace.

Since joining Northwest Health Services, she has treated children in the St. Joseph area and expanded pediatric care in rural Northwest Missouri. She inspires her co-workers to put forth extra effort by decorating a Christmas tree with hats, scarves and gloves for the children to take or by passing out apples at the clinic’s inclusive trunk or treat event. She is constantly looking for events or activities which would enrich the lives of her patients. In addition to caring for her patients, she also mentors nursing students and dedicates her time to developing the next generation of pediatric nurse practitioners.

The 2019-2020 season sold out three of its six performances and exceeded its sales goal by several thousand dollars. This continued success has caught the eye of professional management companies that seek her out to showcase their clients. Beth is described as an extraordinary role model who encourages others to exceed their comfort level. She has set a high bar for herself and wants others to reach and exceed their own personal bar.

Rosemary Swafford has been an outstanding teacher for over 40 years at St. Francis Xavier School. She has taught thousands of students over her years and parents often request that Mrs. Swafford teach their child because they remember the kindness and care she had for them, when she was their second grade teacher. She teaches subjects such as cursive writing, reading, math, science and social studies. Thanks to her hard work, she has greatly increased student reading and math proficiency and many of her second grade students are able to read at a third or fourth grade level. N O M I N E E S W O M A N I N E N T R E P R E N E U E R S H I PSusan Campbell started her marketing business, SJC Marketing, without a financial backer or many prospective clients. She took a leap of faith and counted on word-of-mouth and her professional reputation to help her find new clients. Today, she runs a successful business full of employees who count on her to keep the business running so that they can pay their bills. She encourages others to pursue their goals, no matter what they are, and practices what she preaches. Despite her busy career, she chose to pursue her dreams of higher education and recently earned her master’s degree. She is generous with her time and supports various community causes and organizations. She currently serves on the Advisory Council for the Craig School of Business and is on the Board of Directors for MWSU Foundation, the St. Joseph Public Library and the Youth Alliance Development Committee.

Rani Navarro-Force created her business, Marie Antoinette’s Gluten-Free Bake Shoppe, in response to her daughter’s debilitating illness and need for gluten-free options. She spent countless hours researching and developing her own recipes and created her own top-of-the-line food items. She started as a one person business and, in just seven years, has grown to nearly $1,000,000 in sales. In 2019, she was chosen as 1 of 50 women in the United States for the Tory Burch Fellowship which provides training, education and mentoring in small business. Always willing to lend a hand, she has provided free services to those in need, provides free back-to-school haircuts for children at Noyes Home and has provided in-home services to clients who were fighting disease and too fragile to travel. Her upbeat, positive attitude and giving spirit inspire those around her and make everyone in her salon feel beautiful, inside and out.

Abigail O’Malley started her nutrition coaching business, Revive Nutrition Solutions, from scratch and has grown it into a profitable practice helping women and men lead healthy, fulfilling lives. As a Registered Dietitian, with a Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Science, her research has helped to advance the understanding of how nutrition interventions can favorably impact several chronic diseases. She used her own diagnosis, with celiac disease, as an opportunity to advocate for others to receive evidence-based solutions for managing their condition and improving their quality of life through nutrition. She mentors other dietitians, who wish to start their own private practices by helping them niche their target market and streamline their business models. She serves as a role model to her clients by practicing what she preaches and coaching them through behavioral changes.
