Litter FactsWhat Is Litter? It simply is trash put in the wrong place, in a place where it doesn’t belong. Trash can belong any number of places - in the gar-bage can, in the recycling bin, in a reuse facility, at the sanitary landfill or the waste-to-energy plant. Where it does not belong is on the ground, in the rivers or oceans or blowing in the air. Litter originates from seven major sources. Four are stationary sources where people live and work - household trash collection areas, business trash collection areas, business and industrial loading docks and construction and demolition sites. Three are moving sources - uncovered trucks, motorists and pedestrians.Although there are many reasons given for littering, two of the most common are not having a disposal container available and being too lazy to walk to the recycling or trash container. Although most people will agree litter is ugly, most do not know it has economic, legal and environmental repercussions as well.

Litter Is Ugly. No one likes to live where there is litter. Neighborhoods with a litter prob-lem usually have higher crime, lower property values and less pride in their neighborhood. Litter begets litter. A place that is littered tends to encourage more litter i.e. a dropped off washing machine soon encourages other debris and a dump site is formed. So, the quicker dropped litter is picked up, the less chance it has of accumulating.

Litter Is Also Expensive.Every year, PennDOT spends millions of dollars cleaning up litter. Houses for sale in littered neighborhoods usually don’t get the best prices and owners lose money. Fires started by dropped or dumped litter cause millions of dol-lars of damage every year.

Litter Is Illegal. Most people are unaware of littering fines. In Pennsylvania, if you are caught littering from a vehicle, you can be fined up to $300. Most localities also have fines for businesses or pedestrians caught littering. Many people are unaware that the person opening a package of gum and dropping the wrapper on the sidewalk is doing an illegal act and, if caught, could face charges. Littering is against the law.

Litter Hurts People. Every year in Pennsylvania, there are numerous vehicle accidents caused by litter. People in these accidents are injured and sometimes even killed in their attempts to avoid litter in the roadways. Young children fall on litter in playgrounds, get cut and need medical attention.

Litter Also Harms Plants And Degrades Natural Areas. When garbage is dumped, it can kill or stunt plant growth. Few people think about the harm to natural areas from litter.

Litter Kills Or Injures Animals. Many small animals crawl into bottles or jars and get stuck and slowly starve to death. Animals get caught in plastic six pack rings, plastic bags, fishing line and a multitude of throwaways. Birds that are stuck, can’t fly away from dan-ger. Sometimes animals caught in six pack rings are strangled as they grow too big for the opening. Animals get cut, infected and die. Every year, millions of birds, fish and animals die from litter.

Litter Is A Problem That Can Be Controlled. Education is an important tool. People who are aware of the dangers of litter often make more of an effort to always put their trash the correct place. They also spread the word to others they see littering and teach them to dispose of garbage the right way. Community clean ups encourage people to take pride in their community and keep it clean. Quick removal of litter keeps it from growing into an unmanageable dump site. People can make a differ-ence. Litter can be conquered.

Litter MythsMYTH: Litter control is not important. FACT: Litter may not be the most dramatic or exciting of the many problems that threaten the quality of our environment, but it is a problem which affects everyone in the community

MYTH: Only “certain types” of people litter. FACT: “Litterbugs” can be found among people of every age, sex, race and eth-nic origin, at every level of society and in all geographic locations

MYTH: Littering creates jobs. FACT: LITTER COSTS MONEY. Pennsylvania taxpayers pay millions of dollars annually for roadside cleanup. PennDOT spends this amount to clean up only the worst areas - roads with high litter accumulation.

MYTH: No one notices litter. FACT: LITTER DESTROYS THE BEAUTY OF A COMMUNITY. Tourism is an im-portant part of Pennsylvania’s economy. People come from all over the world to see the beauty of our countryside, towns and cities. When litter mars their enjoyment, Pennsylvania loses valuable tourist dollars.

MYTH: Litter doesn’t hurt anyone. FACT: Litter is a safety hazard. Litter is a breeding ground for fire and disease. FACT: Litter impacts car insurance rates because thousands of auto accidents are litter-related. FACT: Ingesting litter causes injury or death to thousands of pets, wild and farm animals. FACT: Litter is a breeding ground for rats and disease-causing bacteria.

MYTH: Litter doesn’t affect the economy. FACT: Litter discourages economic development because it impacts real estate values. Good stores and important businesses will not locate in a community which lacks the pride to effectively control litter.

Dog Show Judges

Our dog show was a great success. As you can see from the photos, we had a good turnout; both people and dogs alike and great weather too! Many thanks to Marian Privatt for doing a great job as our hostess for the event. Thank you also to our judges, Joe Jala, Danny Morales, Veronica Suarz and Maureen Suarz. I have to say, it was not an easy job, all the dogs were so cute. It’s a good thing I wasn’t a judge because I would still be trying to decide what dogs to pick.

School Bus Stop Safety The Community is making an effort to in-crease bus stop safety and awareness. School bus stop safety is a concern for many com-munities across the nation. With this in mind, we would like to re-introduce some issues regarding bus stop protocol, laws and safety implementations. There are many factors to consider when establishing a safe environment for our stu-dents, such as traffic volume, speed, visibility conditions, knowledge of terrain and Pennsyl-vania’s motor vehicle laws. It is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard the children of our community, whether or not you have children of your own. The following is a list of existing facts, laws and implemen-tations for your awareness.Stop Signs and Intersections Laws Individuals dropping off and picking up their children at the bus stop may not park on the road blocking the flow of traffic. All members of our community have elected to abide by the motor vehicle laws of the Com-monwealth of Pennsylvania. These laws exist to keep order and protect our friends and family members.General Rules

• Never pass on the right side of the bus, where children enter or exit.

• Vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus are required to stop.

• Vehicles must stop when the bus dis-plays flashing red warning lights and extends the stop signal arm

• Vehicles may not pass until the flashing red lights and signals are turned off.

Safety Tips• When getting on the bus, stay away

from the danger zone and wait for the driver’s signal. Board the bus one at a time without pushing and shoving.

• When getting off the bus, look before stepping off the bus to be sure no cars are passing on the shoulder (side of the road). Move away from the bus.

• Before crossing the street, step out from the front of the bus, or until the driver’s face can be seen. Wait for the driver to signal that it’s safe to cross.

• Look left-right-left when coming to the edge of the bus to make sure traffic is stopped. Keep watching traffic when crossing.

• To report bus stop concerns, please call Public Safety.

Rules for Renting a Home in Wild Acres House Rentals within Wild Acres Com-munity must be registered at the Adminis-tration Office. A registration form must be filled out and presented to the Office prior to renting. Properties currently being rented are subject to this policy and must have the necessary registration form filled out and filed with the Administration Office. Fail-ure to comply with this can result in fines. Tenants shall be considered guests and must use Guest Badges that are obtained from Owner of the property. Owners must be in “good standing” in order to receive badges. Renters are not permitted to use any badges but the Guest Badges supplied by owner of said property. The owner and tenant are jointly liable for damages to Association prop-erty. All must abide by the Community’s Rules and Regulations, By-laws and Covenants. Owners are responsible to pay a Renter’s Bond of $500 for Security. This sum is kept in escrow and will not draw interest. Any fine or assessment im-posed on renter will be paid out of this bond. The bond must be replenished within ten (10) days. Owners are required to pay an additional $365 in dues each year for administrative fees and processing. Note: A complete copy of the Rental Policy may be obtained at the Admin-istration Office.

Safety Tips for Your Outdoor Catsby Bernice Jala Drivers should bang on the hood or honk in cold temperatures to rouse cats that may have fallen asleep in wheel wells or elsewhere under a car. Cats have been gravely injured or killed after seeking warmth by hiding in wheel wells or under cars. Every year when the weather gets colder, you should see it as a warning to bang the hood of your car before starting up, as cats may have curled up on top of your tires, or crawled under your car or into your engine for warmth. The noise on the hood is supposed to startle them into vacating your engine. The thought is that if the cat doesn’t move from the door slamming, or from the engine starting and you pulling away, he’s probably pretty far gone anyway, but my friend tells me that the problem is when they’re curled around the engine, and half frozen, which reduces reaction times ... the slamming door may not be enough, and “many cats die this way every year.” Social media sites like Facebook have hastened the circulation of warnings about the safety of animals. Such is the case with a common caution to “bang on the hood” of a car or honk in the winter to alert cats who may have taken shelter atop tires or in other concealed places. According to the warnings, many cats who spend all or some of their time outside are killed or injured critically every year after having fallen asleep in or around the cars of unsuspecting motorists, particularly in colder weather. This advice is commonly given, but are outdoor and indoor/outdoor cats truly at risk of injury in this fashion, particularly in colder months? Pet experts confirm that cats (and dogs) have been known to seek shelter in the confines of cars and trucks and that such hiding spots may not always be readily spotted by drivers who themselves may be hurrying to avoid the cold by starting the engine. For example, recently-driven cars are particularly attractive to chilly cats. Block off access to the garage. If you suspect a cat could get under the car, honk the horn or bang loudly on the hood before starting the engine. This should wake up the animal and give it a chance to escape or let you know it’s there,

in which case you can pop the hood and let it out. As to the frequency of cats being injured after getting stuck or hiding in car wheel wells or engines is not uncommon, the feline behavior was not exclusive to cold weather months. Ultimately, cats can and do seek shelter in and around vehicles for warmth and some are injured or even killed when drivers fail to notice their presence. Banging on the hood or honking the horn can wake a sleeping cat and prevent this from occurring, but sheltering cats indoors is the best way to keep them safe from vehicle dangers.

(Information obtained from various web sites)

Boat Racks• All boats must be removed from boat racks by November 1, 2016. • If you have a boat rack and would like to rent

the same rack for 2017, the office must have your $25 payment by April 30, 2017.

• As of May 1, 2017, any rack for which rent has not been paid, will be rented on a first-come, first-served basis.

• No racks will be “saved” for any resident. Any questions call the office at 570-828-7511.

Please Do Not Feed Wild Animals! Why? Primarily, because you create an unnatural dependency on your part for their supply of food. If that is interrupted, you (and they) can be in trouble. Bears especially can be a problem. Once a bear learns food is available at a certain location he/she will aggressively pursue it. If it is not at the usual site, they have been known to destroy screened porches trying to find where “their” food is. Encouraging them to eat from your hand (or even close to you) is like playing Rus-sian roulette. You have no way of knowing what noise or scent or action will cause a bear to feel threatened and react violently. Can you or your child out-wrestle 400 pounds of bear with 2” claws? Wild animals are just that - wild - and should be observed from a respectable distance.

Recipe CornerNow that the holiday season has arrived, we thought that it might be nice to have a recipe for each of the special holidays that mean so much for all of our members – Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah and New Year’s Eve.

Each of our office staff has contributed a favorite holiday recipe to share with our members.

Our first recipe is donated by Yelena Smashnov:By the light of the Chanukah Menorah, young and old enjoy this crisp, holiday treat!

Potato Latkes Ingredients:5 large potatoes, peeled 1 large onion 3 eggs 1/3 cup flour 1 tsp. Salt ¼ tsp. pepper ¾ cup oil for fryingUse: 10-inch skillet Yields: 4 to 6 servings

• Grate potatoes and onion on the fine side of a grater, or in a food processor; or put in a blender with a little water.

• Strain grated potatoes and onion through a colander, pressing out excess water. Add eggs, flour, and seasoning. Mix well.

• Heat ½ cup oil in skillet. Lower flame and place 1 large tablespoon batter at a time into hot sizzling oil and fry on one side for approximately 5 minutes until golden brown. Turn over and fry on other side 2 to 3 minutes.

• Remove from pan and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Continue with remaining batter until used up, adding more oil when necessary.

• Serve with applesauce on the side.

Variation: Zucchini or Carrot Latkes: Substitute 5 medium zucchini or 5 medium carrots for potatoes.

Our next offering is by Jocelyn Sandor:

Irish Spiced Beef Ingredients:7lb even sized Corned Beef (Topside or Silverside)1 bottle of GuinnessRub mixture: 2 teaspoons each: Ground Cloves, Black Pepper, Allspice, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Mace. 2 Tablespoons Molasses 2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar ¼ Cup Salt

• Mix all Rub ingredients together. Place beef in a bowl and cover with mixture. Store in fridge. Rub beef twice a day for one week. (As this can be time consuming, an alternative option is to thoroughly cover meat with rub mixture and place beef in a vacuum seal food saver bag).

• After one week, tie up meat like you would a roast and place in a large pot along with any juices that have drained. Cover with cold water and add one bottle of Guinness. Simmer gently for 5 hours.

• Best served cold and thinly sliced.

Serving options: with cheese, crackers and chutney.

A great side salad to go with any of your holiday diners is offered by Melissa Joseph:

Apple Cranberry Pecan SaladIngredients:6 cups baby spinach1 Granny Smith apple, thinly sliced½ cup pecan halves1/3 cup pomegranate arils 1/3 cup dried cranberries1/3 cup crumbled goat cheeseFor the Lemon Vinaigrette: ¼ cup olive oil ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 1 lemon, juiced and zested 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

• To make the vinaigrette, whisk together olive oil, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar and poppy seeds in a small bowl; set aside.

• To assemble the salad, place spinach in a large bowl; top with apple, pecans, pomegranate arils, cranberries and goat cheese. Pour the dressing on top of the salad and gently toss to combine. Serve immediately.

And Now For Our Dessert from Rob DePaolis:

Apple CrispIngredients:8 Organic Apples sliced, cored and quartered2 tbsp Corn Starch1 tsp Ground Cinnamon1/2 tsp Ground Ginger1/8 tsp Ground Cloves1/2 cup Pure Maple Syrup
