Highlights from Some Christ the King Parish Events
Alpha Weekend Away
On November 2nd and 3rd, about 30
guests from our two Christ the King
Alpha Courses (Daytime and Evening
Alphas) were joined by nearly 150 oth-
ers from 5 local parishes for two days
of food, fun, talks, and prayer. Thank
you to all who joined!
Alpha Wrap Party — If you’re interested in learning more about Alpha, please consider joining us for our Christ
the King Alpha Wrap Party, where we’ll celebrate those members from our community who completed an Alpha
Course and give our guests a taste of the Alpha experience. All are welcome! Join us on Thursday, December 5th at
6:30pm in the Saint Thomas More Church Hall.
All Saints Day Celebration Thank you to all the children and families who participated in our
All Saints Day celebration on October 27th! Children were in-
vited to dress up as a saint and then share some facts about that
saint with those who attended the celebration. We were invited to
ask for those saints to pray for us during the month of November,
when we celebrate all the saints and faithful departed. All you
holy men and women of God, pray for us!
St. Andrew School of Evangelization On November 8-11, our parish welcomed a team of leaders from the National Office of the St.
Andrew School to provide a formation course, called Andrew and Barnabas, to the leaders of the
St. Andrew School of Evangelization (SASE) located here at Christ the King. The St. Andrew
School of Evangelization is a Catholic ministry of lay people and clergy, evangelizing and
proclaiming the gospel in the model of the apostle St. Andrew. St. Andrew, upon encountering
Christ, first went to get his brother Simon Peter (see John 1:35-42), so the mission of SASE is to
bring the 'Simon Peters' of the world to Jesus, who will serve, preach, and love the Lord Jesus
more, and be bold witnesses of the saving message of Christ. Thank you to Fr. Stefan and his
team for their prayerful presence in our parish last weekend!

Remembrance Day Masses: Pray for All Souls
In November, the Church prays for all her faithful children who have departed
from this life, but have not yet attained the joys of heaven. If we die without
being fully prepared to receive the fullness of God’s glory in heaven, God
graciously gives us a process of purification for our souls, called Purgatory. In
November, we are reminded to pray for our loved ones, as well as those who
have died and have no one to pray for them.
St. Thomas More Mass of Remembrance: Tuesday, November 19th at 7:00 pm For those from the St Thomas More community who would like to pray for and remember loved ones who have died
in the last year. All are invited to come and light a candle for their loved ones.
St. Vincent de Paul Mass of Remembrance: Friday, November 22nd** at 7:00 pm (** Please note that the
wrong date was listed in previous bulletins and announcements ) For those from the St Vincent de Paul community
who would like to pray for and remember loved ones who have died this last year. All are welcome!

the collection basket at Mass. Thanks for your support.

There Will Rise the Son of Justice
Why would Jesus seem to burst the bubble of the people
standing in front of the great temple, by saying that one
day, not one stone of the temple would stand upon the
other? Why would Jesus speak of false gods, and nations
rising against nations? Why would Jesus speak of be-
trayal and persecution? At face value, this seems to not
be good news at all.
In reality though, this IS good news because Jesus is tell-
ing us to not put our value in earthly things, and to find
our fulfillment in Him, not in the world. While doing re-
search for this reflection, I realized that the key to under-
standing and appreciating this Gospel really comes from
the first reading from Malachi, especially in the last line:
“For those who revere my name, the son of justice shall
rise, with healing in it’s wings.” The good news is that
there is something greater than earthly things, and that is
an eternal relationship with Jesus, that will rise above all
the challenges of this world.
If we think back just a few short weeks to the recent fed-
eral election, a lot of people were anxious about their
choices and the ramifications of voting for the wrong
person. Leading up to the election, someone posted on
Facebook, “Forgive me, Father, for I have voted.” Many
just weren’t comfortable with the choices they had to
make. I remember taking comfort in the fact that no mat-
ter what the outcome was “the son of justice” will rise.
We can rise above it all by setting our eyes on Jesus.
Buildings may fall, we may face all kinds of persecutions
and sacrifices, but Jesus says “Do not be terrified.” Jesus
is journeying with us. “For those who revere my name,
the son of justice shall rise, with healing in it’s wings.”
God bless you all,
Deacon Danny

Bishop’s Statement on
Persecuted Christians
Last week, the Canadian Conference
of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), through
the Commission for Justice and Peace,
and in consultation with Aid to the
Church in Need Canada, released a
statement titled: In His Name: State-
ment on the Persecution of Chris-
tians. This was done in anticipation
of Red Wednesday on November 20, 2019, which is a day
of solidarity and prayer dedicated to raising awareness
about the persecution of Christians throughout the world.
The statement outlines various types of persecution ex-
perienced and the reality of individuals and communities
who suffer because of their faith in Christ, most notably in
countries where Christians are in the minority. Under-
standing that all Catholic faithful have a role to help alle-
viate the suffering of others, this statement offers possible
suggestions of spiritual and material support for the mil-
lions of men, women and children for whom persecution is
a daily reality.

3rd stone building in Halifax?

Minister of Canada was a
parishioner at St. Mary’s?

out the windows and cracked the bells?
that there was a story on the CBC last week about
the murals being uncovered behind the altar?
Take advantage of guided tours, offered as part of the
Downtown Business Association’s Festival of Lights, to
learn more about the fascinating history of St. Mary’s
Cathedral Basilica, in downtown Halifax. Tours begin at

Introducing the Leadership Team
What is a Leadership Team? A Leadership Team is a small team that supports the Pastor in his day-to-day leadership and decision-making for the
parish. No one person is perfectly well-rounded (not even priests!), so the Archdiocese has advised every Pastor to
form a team of 4-6 people that share his vision, have availability to serve, and balance his strengths and weaknesses to
support him in leadership. To do this, Fr. Toochukwu asked a number of parishioners to take charism-based tests to
help determine their God given spiritual gifts, as well as a Strengths Finder assessment to identify their human
strengths and weaknesses.
Why should we have a Leadership Team? Aren’t Pastoral Council & Finance Council enough? In the past, Pastoral Council acted as a group that supported the Pastor and assisted with decision-making. However,
monthly meetings aren’t enough to help with day-to-day decisions. In our new parish, Pastoral Council meets monthly
and focuses on the long-term, big picture vision for our parish (think 3-5 year plan) while the Leadership Team meets
weekly and is responsible for short-term, tactical implementation of that vision (think 6-12 month plan). Meanwhile,
the role of Finance Council is to ensure that our finances are in line with our parish’s mission.
Fr. Toochukwu Okafor (Pastor) — Fr. Toochukwu was born and ordained in Nigeria. He joined the
Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth in 2009 and became pastor of Christ the King Parish in August 2019.
His vision is that our parish would be a place where everyone could have a personal experience of God’s
love, the mercy of Jesus Christ and the joy of the Holy Spirit. His strengths are developing harmony,
strong relationships, and connectedness among the people of God.
Fr Anthony Caruana (Associate Pastor) — Fr. Anthony is originally from the Mediterranean island of
Gozo in Malta. Out of a missionary impulse, he joined the Archdiocese of St. Andrews & Edinburgh in
Scotland and was ordained there in 2010. As a missionary priest he is passionate about making mission-
ary disciples, empowering lay leadership, focusing on social justice, and nurturing young people. His
strengths are strong strategic, deliberative, futuristic, and analytical thinking skills.
Blair Brown (Parishioner) — Blair has been a member of St Vincent de Paul since he, wife Ella, and
his family moved to Dartmouth from Newfoundland 15 years ago. He has been chair of the SVDP Pas-
toral Council, Chair of the SVDP Planning Team, and Christ the King Transition Team. “I want people
to know that our new parish will only be as strong as our ministries are, and in how well their members
make disciples of Jesus.” Blair’s strengths are his strong belief, his ability to coordinate in a team, and
his sense of responsibility for the wellbeing of both French and English communities.
Nora Muise (Parishioner) — Nora and Cyril have been married for 35 years. She is a mother of 4, a
retired teacher, and has been a member of St. Thomas More for the past 33 years. She’s seen people
come alive in their relationship with God in many ways and wants to see this happen at Christ the King.
“I want people in the pews to know they are an indispensable part of our success; they are the branches
of the vine, rooted in the Lord, that will enable us to reach out to those new to the faith.” Her strengths
are a continual desire to learn, strong communication skills, and desire to achieve tasks with excellence.
Becca O’Hara (Director of Formation & Mission) — Becca grew up Catholic in Minnesota and fell in
love with Jesus more deeply while studying Theology, Catechetics and Leadership. She moved to Can-
ada in June 2018 and married her husband Chris in June 2019. She loves coffee, chocolate, and learning
more about our Catholic faith. Her strengths are empathy, connectedness, a desire to learn new things,
and the ability to help people develop their individual gifts.
Darlene Bonang (Director of Community) — Darlene came back to her faith as a young adult, and got
involved in Religious Ed with her school-aged children. Though her career was in graphic design, pro-
motions and marketing, she worked as a parish administrator for Saint Benedict Parish in Halifax. She
and her husband live on the Eastern Shore. Her strengths are consistency, the ability to win over people
to a vision, make personal connections, and foster harmony.
