Christmas is a wonderful liturgical season as we celebrate the Birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception Parishes offer a variety of Masses to celebrate this great feast as we do our best to accommodate as many quality liturgies to as many people as possible. This year we will offer four Christmas Masses ~ two on Christmas Eve and two on Christmas Day. Each of our churches has limited seating capacity, and given the popularity of Christmas Eve Masses, they quickly fill up. If your intention is to attend the 4 o’clock Christmas Eve Mass at Sacred Heart, remember that seating capacity is limited! so plan to get there early. Fire safety regulations prohibit the setting up of chairs in the aisles and doorways. You might want to consider attending the 6:30PM Christmas Eve Mass at Immaculate Conception in Fairbank where they will have the parish center ready for overflow if needed and provide live broadcast of the Mass. Please plan accordingly to help keep your Christmas a happy celebration.

Stewardship in His Name….

When the Son of Man comes in glory, may we be among those who have fed the hungry, welcomed the stranger, and clothed the naked. For Jesus tells us clearly that it is those who have demonstrated good stewardship by sharing their gifts with the less fortunate who will receive God’s blessing and inherit the kingdom.

Are you being called by God to consider being a Deacon? Just who is a Permanent Deacon? It is more accurate to ask who a deacon is, rather than to list what a deacon does. As an ordained minister in the

Catholic church, deacons are the first level in the hierarchy of sacred orders ~Deacon, then Priest, then Bishop. As a married or single man, deacons respond to God’s call in their lives by embracing active ministry in the Church through liturgy, word and charity. By doing so, deacons provide an official and sacramental presence of the Church to the faithful in both urban and rural communities. St. Pope John Paul II stated, “The deacon’s ministry is the Church’s service sacramen-talized.” Therefore, the deacon’s service in the Church’s ministry of word and liturgy would be severely deficient if his exemplar witness and assistance in the Church’s ministry of charity and justice did not accompany it. He went on to affirm both; “This is at the very heart of the diaconate to which you may be called: to be a servant of the mysteries of Christ and, at one and the same time, to be a servant of your brothers and sisters. This joining together of two dimensions shows the important nature of the ministry which exists by ordination.” (From National Directory #36) The Archdiocese of Dubuque is currently offering information meetings on this vocation and invites you to consider this calling from God. They will be taking applications for the diaconate through the early winter months. If you have any interest in this calling and/or would like to learn more about it, please contact Deacon Jim Patera. (319) 509-1210 or call our parish office and leave a message so Deacon Jim can contact you. You might also enjoy going to the following web page to read more about this vocation or watch some of the video presentations. https://www.dbqarch.org/offices/permanent-diaconate/ God may be calling you to this special role in the Church. Please take time to pray about it and to open your hearts to the consideration of the blessings that await you as a Permanent Deacon.

Background on today’s Gospel Today’s Gospel passage is the conclusion of Jesus’ discourse with his disciples. It is about the end of time, the coming of the Son of Man, and the final judgment. We hear this description of the final judgment at the conclusion of our liturgical year, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. In the context of Matthew’s Gospel, this passage might also be read as a conclusion of Matthew’s report on Jesus’ life and ministry; the remaining chapters report the events of Jesus’ Passion and Resurrection. In today’s Gospel, Jesus describes to his disciples the scene of the judgment of the Son of Man. All the nations will be assembled before him, and he will separate them as a shepherd separates sheep and goats upon their return from the pasture. The judgments made by the Son of Man will be based upon the acts of mercy shown to the least ones—the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the ill, and the imprisoned. Indeed, Jesus, who suffered on the Cross, identifies himself with the least ones. Recall that last week’s parable of the talents taught us that the gifts that we have been given are intended to be used for the service of others, especially the least among us. Our judgment before God will be based not only on how we have used these gifts and talents, but also on how we have extended ourselves in service to these least ones. Indeed, Jesus tells us that whenever we have served these least ones, we have served Christ himself. When we read today’s Gospel in the context of the chapters that follow in Matthew’s Gospel, we learn the extent to which Jesus identifies with the least ones. In accepting death on the cross, Jesus shows himself to be one of the hungry, the naked, the ill, and the imprisoned. To accept Jesus is to accept him who suffered and died on the Cross as one of the least ones.
