1. Memoryverse‘TheCross’.Havealargecrossdrawnontoalargepieceofpaperorcard.Foldthecrossattheboxes.Writepartsofthememoryverseintoeachbox,readingdownfromthetop,acrossthemiddleanddowntothebottom.Letallthechildrensaythememoryverse,thenfoldoverapieceofthecrosstohidesomeofthewordsandaskthechildrentorepeatthememoryverse.Continueuntilthereisonlyonesquareleft.

2. ‘ToiletRoll’memoryverse.Usingatoiletroll,unrollitandwriteawordontoeachsheet.Makesureyouuseamarkerthatwillleakintothepaper,makingitalittlemoredifficulttoread.Rollupthetoiletrollreadytorevealthememoryverse!Askforavolunteertoholdthefirstsheetofthetoiletrollasyourevealthememoryverse.Oncethewholememoryversehasbeenrevealedgetallthechildrentorepeatitandlearnit.Thenremoveasheetortwoatatime,eachtimesayingthememoryverseuntileverychildisconfidentlysayingthememoryverse.

Backgroundinfo:

JesusbeganhislastweekonEarthridingintoJerusalemonadonkey!OnPalmSundaywecelebrateJesus’triumphalentry-thisisthesaviouroftheworld,theMessiahanditmarkstheweekbeforeJesus’resurrection.

ThiseventisparticularlyimportantbecauseitisoneofthefewtimesthatJesus’gloryisrecognisedonEarth.

HisentranceintoJerusalemfulfilledtheprophesiesinIsaiah62andZephaniah9:9.Thesewouldhavebeenwell-knowntotheJewsandwouldhavemarkedJesusasthecomingKingandMessiah.

JesusdidnotenterJerusaleminthewaywewouldexpectofaking,insteadheentersonacoltofadonkey.Hefullyshowshishumbleness,meeknessandpovertyinthisaction,Jesusdidnotcomeshowinghiskingshipinstateceremonyoralavishentrance.Incompletecontrast,itishispeaceandhumilitythatmarkhimastheMessiah.

Despitethis,thesesamepeoplewhowelcomedJesusinto Jerusalemwouldbethesamewhoscreamedforhimtobecrucifiedonlyafewdayslater.

WhentheJewsbelievedthatJesuswouldfreethemfromtheoccupyingforce,theRomans,theywerehappytocelebrateHim,butassoonastheyrealisedthatJesuswasnotgoingtowageawaragainsttheirenemiestheylostfaithandturnedagainstHim.

RidingonadonkeyshowedthatJesuswasthekingwhowouldsavethepeople.AnotherwordforthisistheMessiahas,alongtimeago,peoplehadwrittenaboutwhattheMessiahwouldbelike,andtheysaidthatHewouldenterJerusalemridingonadonkey.
