Principal’s Message

Welcome back to what I am sure will be a very exciting 2015! I hope the Christmas break has been enjoyable and that it has

refreshed and reinvigorated students and staff alike.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of our new students and in particular, year 7. I know the Warilla High School

experience will be fantastic and that we are excited about working with you this year.

Likewise, I would like to introduce our new permanent members of staff, including:

Ms Melanie Tregonning - HT PDHPE

Ms Rowena Howell - Science

Ms Tasha Vasos - English

Ms Peta Maclean - HSIE

Ms Leanne Secomb - Support

There have also been some other significant changes, with Mr Harrison taking up the Acting HT Engagement and Retention

position while Mrs Fallo-Cranney has been redeployed as HT Secondary Studies to coordinate our BOS requirements and Senior

School Curriculum Organisation. Also, Mr Stanizzo will continue as Relieving Deputy Principal, working to oversee the learning,

welfare and discipline needs for Years 8, 10 and 12 while Mrs Raison will look after the same areas for Years 7, 9 and 11. Ms

Brook has taken over the challenging and exciting role of Deputy Principal responsible for Professional Learning and Accreditation.

This was a new position in 2014 which Mrs Raison set up to ensure a focused and ongoing program of teacher professional

learning that aligns with both NSW and National Teacher Standards, and that staff have the requisite learnings to achieve those

targets as described in our school plan.

This plan is in its final draft and will be made available on our website before the end of Term 1. The 3 major school priorities

articulated in this plan are:

Quality Systems and Practices

Excellence for All

Underpinning these targets is our comprehensive student welfare structures and behaviour management processes and the

methods we use to inculcate positive student attitudes. A tremendous amount of work has been done on this aspect of our

operation to ensure the Positive Behaviour for Success (PBS) framework aligns with our discipline and tracking systems. This is an

exciting development which involves every member of staff and will add to the improved learning environment we seek to achieve.

We have also introduced new uniform standards. These have been endorsed by our P&C and the expectation is that all students

will abide by our dress code. We need parental and care-provider support in this area and I know that by working in close

partnership we will reach our goal of happy, confident kids who are ready to take their place in the 21st century. If this causes any

concern, please make an appointment to see me.

I would also like to provide an open invitation to attend our P&C meetings. These are important meetings that serve as a forum to

critique the work and direction of the school. It is an opportunity to tease out areas of concern and to make informed comments

about the policies and processes that make our school tick. It is NOT a fund raising P&C in the traditional sense and I promise no

one will be given a job….unless they want it!

I look forward to seeing you at our first P&C Meeting on 10 February, commencing at 7pm in the library.

Deputies Report

Welcome Back! It has been an extremely positive start to 2015 for our students from Year 7 through to Year 12. Students have returned from the summer break refreshed and ready for an outstanding year at Warilla High School. It has been terrific to see students moving around our school in full uniform, with all required equipment and ready to give their best effort. This year the Deputy Principals will look after 3 year groups each:

Year 7, 9 and 11 Mrs Raison

The DP offices are based in the Student Administration Area. We look forward to working with our students to assist them to achieve their best at Warilla High School in 2015. School Uniform As mentioned, the uniform across the school looks fantastic. A small number of students still require one or two items of uniform such as correct shorts or school jumper. The school uniform shop is open each Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning. Students are reminded to bring a note from home if they are out of uniform on a particular day. This note should be presented at the Library sign in office before school and the student will receive a uniform slip. If students and families are having difficulty purchasing the uniform we would ask that you contact the relevant Year Advisor or Deputy Principal and we will assist through our Student Assistance Scheme. Individual Health Care Plans During 2014 WHS started the process of developing Individual Health Care Plans for students who may require Emergency Care at school due to a known condition such as Diabetes, Asthma, Epilepsy or Anaphylaxis. If your student requires an Individual Health Care Plan and you have not yet met with school staff to discuss this process please contact the school as soon as possible on 42963055. BYOD There have been some questions regarding the BYOD program at WHS. BYOD or Bring Your Own Device will start at WHS in Semester Two this year. During Semester One our staff and technology team will finalise the organisation for the BYOD program and once this is complete the school will provide information and resources for students and parents to assist in the selection and purchase of a device. Please follow the link on our school website to http://warillahighbyod.weebly.com/ or contact [email protected] Seek Knowledge Term 1 has started with students working on one of our four school values “Seek Knowledge” during PBS lessons and activities. Students have been focusing on the importance of bringing equipment, completing homework, asking questions and “going for gold” - doing that bit extra that will boost success such as independent research, using the free after school tutoring program or attending the homework centre. If your student is interested in participating in any of these fabulous opportunities please ask them to call in an see their Year Adviser, Ms Lever (HT Welfare) or a DP to discuss.

Respect others and value yourself We would like to take this opportunity to remind our school community that any student riding a bike to school must wear a helmet. It is also important that all students obey all road rules whilst travelling to school whether it be via foot, bike, scooter or other means. Honesty Warilla High School acknowledges the increasing maturity of our Year 12 students thereby allowing students the opportunity to arrive at school at the time of their first timetabled class on each day. Similarly, they may leave at the end of their last timetabled class each day. This concession only applies to the students who have returned the signed permission note which is available from Mr Stanizzo or Mrs Fotheringham in A3. However, no student is to leave the school grounds at any other time during the day whether it be to go home or to their car unless they have submitted a note to the front office before Period 1 and been provided with a ‘Permission to Leave’ slip. Driving to School It is school policy that no student is allowed to drive to school unless they have returned the necessary paperwork to Ms Lever in E36 or to one of the Deputy Principals. This policy is in place to protect our students and we appreciate the ongoing support of our school community in enforcing this.

Make Online Payments

From the 21st July it will be possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure

payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit/debit card. The payment page

is accessed from the front page of the schools website by selecting $ Make a payment

Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and

practical arts activities (these include band, drama and dance). There is also a category called “other”, this to cover items not

covered in the previous heading. ‘Other’ can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice.

When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter:

the students name, and

class and reference number OR

the students name, and

date of birth.

These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system.

This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner

and these details are not passed back to the school.

You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed

and/or printed.

Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child’s account. As a receipt has

been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES

LATE ARRIVAL – CHANGE OF

PROCEDURES Up until 9.15am go to the side window of the Library

between ‘A’ block and the Library block. One of the

Office Staff will record your information and give you a

late slip to get into class. After 9.15am report to the front

office. Arriving late 3 times without a note from

parent/guardian will result in parents being contacted by

the school and consequences will apply.

SCHOOL FEES

Invoices for school fees will be sent to

parents/guardians by mail during Week 6 of term –

2nd – 6th March.

The 2015 fridge magnet calendar with important

school dates will also be included.

UPDATING STUDENT DETAILS

If you change your address, phone number,

including mobile number, or other contact details

could you please let the school know as soon as

possible.

PRIVATE PERSONAL PROPERTY

Personal property which is brought to school is the

sole responsibility of the individual. The school is

not insured to cover loss or damage.

STUDENT DIARIES

Year 7 will be using E-Diary from Term 2 2015.

PARKING IN SCHOOL ZONES

Heavy fines are imposed for illegal dropping off or

picking up students in school zone hours.

The school car park is for staff parking only and is

not to be used for dropping off or picking up

students.

RIDING A BIKE TO SCHOOL

Students who ride a bike to school are required by

law to wear a helmet.

STUDENT ABSENCES

Students must bring a note to explain their absences.

A green ‘Absence Book’ is available from the front

office. Unexplained absences will appear on the

student’s report.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Parents experiencing financial difficulties can apply

for support through the Student Assistance Scheme.

Funds are available to help with subject fees, school

uniform and books. All enquiries can be made

through the front office.

Bonding Day On Friday 30th January all of Year 7 along with their Year 10 Peer Support

leaders were involved in a ‘Bonding Day’ as part of the Peer Support

program.

The day was filled with inspirational, motivating, creative and also physical

activities in which Year 7 students were able to begin to build positive

relationships within their own year group as well as Year 10 Peer Support

Leaders to make decisions, work together as a team and solve problems.

A sausage sizzle was enjoyed by all for lunch and a huge thank you to Mr

Dalley and the Year 10 helpers for their hospitality. It was pleasing to hear

such beautiful manners from our new members of the school as they

received their sandwich.

Year 10 Peer Support leaders did an absolutely fabulous job in facilitating

the activities, using their initiative and making the end of Week 1 a happy

and enjoyable experience for Year 7.

Year 7 Adviser Miss Thistlewaite was impressed with the overall efforts from

Year 7 and is pleased with the great start they have had to their first year in

High School. Miss Lever, Releiving Head Teacher Welfare, was also

impressed and thankful for the help of the Year 10 Peer Support Leaders.

I look forward to working with Year 7 and the Year 10 Peer Support leaders

during other activities throughout the year.

Japan Homestay March 21-26 2015 During Week 9 of Term 1, Warilla High School will host 20 students from

Chiba Higashi High School, Japan for a ‘taster’ visit over 5 days. This

opportunity will further develop the Japanese Program which is running

successfully across all Year 7 classes at WHS. The students will attend

classes with their buddies and enjoy the dynamic school life here,

participating in sports and cultural clubs and making lots of friends. A wide

range of learning experiences will result. This language and cultural

exchange will be an enriching experience for all. It is specifically designed to

broaden our students’ understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture.

South Coast Golf Championships AND South Coast Matchplay The golfing calendar commences early in the school term for our keen

golfers. Any student wishing to compete in the South Coast Match Play

competition needs to give their name to Mrs Clune before Friday 14th

February. To enter this competition the boys handicap limit is 7 and there is

no limit for the girls.

In 2014 Jack Kessell made the semi-finals of the NSW All Schools Match

Play Competitions contested at Blackheath Golf Course – an outstanding

effort considering the standard of this field of school aged players.

The South Coast Golf Strokeplay Championships will be held at Kiama Golf

Course on Monday 9th February. Handicap limit for this event is 26 for boys

and 45 for girls. All students wishing to participate in this event will need to

give Mrs Clune their name and golf link number before the end of February.

Special Provisions for the HSC 2015 The Board of Studies will allow students who have a “disability” to use special provisions for the HSC. They are practical

arrangements designed to help students who can’t otherwise make a fair attempt at the HSC exams. The provisions are

determined based on the way in which the student’s performance is disadvantaged during exams.

The definition of disability is very broad, examples of disabilities include learning disabilities, literacy difficulties, and fine motor skill

issues, medical problems such as diabetes, severe asthma, chronic back problems, physical disfigurement, and mental health such

as

Anxiety, depression, bi-polar, neurological and sensory such as scotopic sensitivity or hearing loss.

Special Provisions available can include readers, writers, extra time, rest breaks, separate small group supervision.

Applications are lodged electronically by Warilla High School staff. Documentary evidence is required as supporting evidence and

must be submitted to the school for inclusion with the application.

The application process is lengthy. It is advisable to begin the application process as quickly as possible to avoid delays.

Applications generally close at the end of Term 1, 2015. Applications may be lodged later in the year, even during the HSC exam

period.

Year Vaccinations By this stage all Year 7 students should have presented their parents/guardians with a packet of information about the Department

of Public Health Vaccination Programme. A letter was also distributed to all students at school, on Friday 30 January, which

included information of dates and how the process is implemented at Warilla High. It is important that the correctly completed form

is returned to the school as soon as possible. The Vaccination Programme is an important strategy to protect the students from

various diseases common either in Australia or Overseas. If parents have medically related questions it is advised that either a

phone call is made to the Public Health Department or a visit to the family doctor may be able to give the needed information. On

the vaccination day students will be withdrawn by class to collect their form and be processed. Please assist by contacting me at

the school, prior to the date, if your son or daughter would be less stressed if their class was early in the day. Thank you in

advance for your assistance with encouraging your son or daughter to view this as a non- stressful situation.

Home Economics Food Technology I would like to take this opportunity to advise parents that if your son or daughter is participating in the Year 10 Food Technology

class, in Term 1, they will be looking at Food Styling / Photography as well as Food Trends. The students will be completing

practicals on cupcake decorating, sliders, healthy food products as well as deconstruction of a Lemon Meringue Pie (as well as

other practicals). Their first assessment task is to develop a cover for a recipe book on one of the following topics- Entertaining,

Healthy eating, or Comfort Eating. Students should be beginning to look at food magazines and noting strategies used to

encourage the consumer to pick up the book and make a purchase.

Year 9 will be completing their first unit on "Back to Basics" ensuring the students have knowledge and understanding of the

importance of all three aspects of hygiene (personal, environmental and food) as well as safety in the kitchen when using knives

and working in teams. Their first practicals will allow them to use various pieces of equipment and learn placement of the

equipment in the food technology classrooms. The work which continues will enable the students to develop various skills in food

preparation and an understanding of the influences on food selection.

Both Year 9 and Year 10 Food Technology students should have knowledge of the date which is their regularly scheduled practical

lesson. They have also been informed of the requirement to bring two tea towels, a hand towel, a dishcloth and a container ( all in

a plastic bag) for each practical lesson in order to participate. The purchase of the required food stuffs is dependent on payment of

the elective fee charges- information which has been distributed to all classes. Please contact me, at the school, if your

Aboriginal Education Committee Warilla High School currently requires tutors, employed under the Norta Norta Program, particularly for the senior school in the

following subjects. Mathematics, Science, PD/H/PE and Aboriginal Studies.

Under the Discrimination Act, Aboriginality is a preference for employment but not a requirement. Trained teachers and those with

experience are particularly encouraged to apply.

Albion Park Show Society

Albion Park Show Society invites any young ladies in year 10 or older to be part of the Debutante Ball to be held on 29th May,

2015. Enquiries phone Diane McParland 42360403/0427360403 by 5th March, 2013, a meeting with those interested will be held

on 8th March 7.30pm in the HACC Centre Albion Park Showground.

Crossroads 2015 – Year 11 Permission notes and medical forms have been sent out for

the Crossroads camp happening at Wombaroo Week 9 this

term (23rd-27th March). These forms can be returned into the

PE staffroom over the coming two weeks. Parents are

encouraged to continue payments towards the camp

balance. Any student or parent unsure how much money is

owing please contact the Administration Manager Cynthia

Souter on ph: 42963055.

Places are still available for students who have not yet

placed a deposit for the camp. These students are urged to

speak to Mr Murray in the PDHPE staffroom as soon as

possible.

This camp satisfies the mandatory 25hr Crossroads course for senior students. Over the years Crossroads has also proven to be

an amazing opportunity in aiding the development of relationships between fellow students and their teachers and is an opportunity

not to be missed.
