Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers

P&C AGM This year we will be trying to form a P&C. The AGM will be held on Monday 19 March at 3.30pm in the library. Nominees for executive positions must be financial members, so you will need to bring along $1 to join. Positions that will be available are: President, 2 x Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Please be aware…… if we don’t fill executive positions we cannot operate as a P&C. This would mean that we would not be able to: • Operate a canteen • Provide a breakfast program • Have fundraising events such as Easter Hat Parade, Spring Fair, special meal deals and barbeques or hold the Mothers’ and Fathers’ day stalls. The P&C plays a vital role in supporting our children, without them, many of our programs would not operate.

Driving and Parking Safely Near a School The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools. You can help keep children safe by remembering the following:

drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road

never call out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous

always take extra care in 40km school zones

follow all parking signs - these help keep your child as safe as possible

park responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate

never double park - it is illegal and puts children at risk

never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm

model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child

always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways

be aware that new penalties apply for indiscretions around schools.

Bikes and Wheeled Toys A young child's skull is soft and easily injured from a collision or fall. When you are selecting a bicycle or wheeled toy such as skateboards, rollerblades etc for your child make sure it is appropriate for their age and capability. Whenever children are riding wheeled toys or bicycles, it is important that they are wearing a correctly fitted helmet and one that meets the Australian Standard. Tips to keep your child safe when using wheeled toys:

Always have an adult supervise

Ensure they wear appropriate clothing and safety gear

Make sure they are easily visible

Maintain and check their wheeled toys on a regular basis We have had several complaints about our students riding on the road with no helmet. We have also had some very near misses where cars have had to swerve or stop to avoid hitting a child. Please ensure your children understand the road rules when riding to and from school. All students participated in road safety lessons at the PCYC last year where road safety concepts were taught. It only takes one accident to destroy a family, school and community. Please help to keep our students safe.

Our School Uniform It wasn’t until I sent my own children to school that I fully appreciated the value of a school uniform. A school uniform is affordable, practical and predictable. On excursions or out of school activities, a school uniform also becomes another way of ensuring student surveillance and therefore safety. All students in NSW Government schools are expected to adhere to the requirements of the school’s uniform or dress code policy. Adherence to the school’s uniform code is also a Core Rule of the Department of Education and Communities. Our students (and therefore their parents) have always been great supporters of their school uniform. Thank you to the parents who attended the uniform workshop and a school policy will be sent out to all families soon.

Teacher Professional Learning—20 December and 21 December 2018 I wish to inform all parents and carers that throughout the year teachers will be participating in several professional learning workshops. These workshops are in place of professional learning that would normally happen on the last 2 days of the working year, 20 December and 21 December 2018. I would like to say on behalf of myself and all the staff at Warilla North Public School, we look forward to working together with

you to support your child’s education.

McKeon’s Swimming Last week Stage 2 and 3 started swimming lessons at McKeon’s swimming school at Unanderra. This is a great experience for the students. They swim in an indoor heated pool with small groups and great instructors. The children had a great time and learnt a lot. This program will continue every Friday until the end of term. Thank you so much McKeon’s, this is an amazing opportunity for our students and we really appreciate it.

Canteen news! We would like to thank Jan and Kayla for all their wonderful help and support that they have given to the canteen and school during 2017. This year the canteen will be operated by Jess Trott - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Kelly Lennard - Wednesday, Friday and volunteer Mel. All volunteers are welcome.

THANK YOU to the Denny foundation. The Denny foundation provides us with fruit, vegetables and bread every week. The donations are greatly appreciated and enables us to provide free breakfast club to our students. It also helps us provide fresh fruit in the fruit bowls for the classrooms, and will be helping us bring cheap meal deals to the school for lunch. You can help support the Denny Foundation by attending their Boost Market Day monthly. For more information: [email protected]/dennyfoundation THANKYOU to Mitchell’s Fruits! They also are helping provide fresh fruit for morning breakfast and our classroom fruit bowls which is kindly collected on a weekly basis by Alison Hobbs. Thankyou Alison!
