Student Parking Announcement

Beginning semester 2, all non-registered drivers and drivers without their permit displayed will have a vehicle boot placed on their vehicle. Please register your vehicle ASAP to avoid paying a $35 fee to have the boot removed, and remember to display your permit at all times. If you have any questions, please stop by Student Affairs.

AttendanceMariner High School believes that regular and punctual school attendance is crucial for a student’s academic success. All students are required to attend school every day of the school year.

Florida Statute 1003.21 requires that all children who have not yet attained the age of 18 attend school regularly during the entire school year. As outlined in the Code of Conduct, students may not be absent without the permission of the principal/designee.

According to the School District of Lee County, Policy 4.16, for enforcement of compulsory school attendance purposes, unless acceptable documentation is submitted, an accumulation of daily unexcused absences or tardiness, or early sign-outs that equal 5 days in a calendar month or 10 days within a 90 calendar day period may be exhibiting a pattern of nonattendance. If a student is exhibiting a pattern of nonattendance (excused or unexcused), in a course, credit will be withheld.

As an intervention, parents will be called and notified of student’s attendance and a conference will be set up with the principal/designee. If the student exhibits persistent nonattendance, the school social worker will be notified.

Our goal is to make sure that students have every opportunity for success at Mariner High. Being present for instruction is crucial to this success.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding attendance, please contact Mr. Eric Washington, Assistant Principal.

Pedestrian GateFor safety reasons, students who are walkers, must use the pedestrian gate located at the north end of the campus on Tropicana. Please ensure your student follows this very important procedure. If you have any questions contact the school.

At the senior class meeting on April 27th at 12:45 p.m., seniors may put a request in writing for extra tickets. A form will be provided for this at the meeting. Tickets are required for all guests attending graduation, regardless of age.

All requests for extra tickets will then be consolidated and tickets divided evenly among those persons requesting more tickets. We will do our best to accommodate the requests for extra tickets, as long as we stay within the crowd-size limits posted for FSW Suncoast Arena. Please make reasonable requests for extra tickets.

Seniors will receive their tickets at the MANDATORY graduation practice on May 17th in the MHS Gym. YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO RECEIVE YOUR TICKETS

TO GRADUATION. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS!!

Wear comfortable heels because you will be standing for a long time. No large dangling earrings or flowers are allowed to be worn. Caps must be worn level with tassel hanging to the right side. Ladies caps should NOT be perched on the back of your head.

• MALES - Wear a dress shirt, tie, dress slacks (dark color) and dark dress shoes or boots. No sneakers, or flip flops are allowed. Caps are worn level with tassel hanging on right side.

Harmon Video will also be making a video of the entire ceremony which will be for sale. The CD’s may be ordered at the senior breakfast and at the graduation ceremony. The cost is $15 or 2 for $25. They will be mailed out in June.

Graduation is a proud and wonderful event that you and your parents have worked towards for 12 or 13 years. It is one of the most memorable times of your life. Everyone is waiting to hear their son’s or daughter’s name. Noisemakers and shouting out loud takes away from the dignity of the occasion. Please refrain from this type of behavior. We must ask all guests to be properly attired for this special occasion. Shorts and T-shirts are not considered proper attire.

HONOR STOLESHonor stoles are gold, satin stoles that are worn by seniors who have attained a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 or higher by the end of the “first semester of their senior year.” They are eligible to graduate with a “Summa Cum Laude” distinction and will

Silver Magic Marching BandSilver Magic Marching Band had their final performance of the season this past November. We competed at the FMBC State Championships in Clearwater, and after a long season with a lot of work and sacrifice, we ended the year ranked 10th overall in the State. Our music score was again our highest caption, putting us in 5th place musically in the state (with the Percussion receiving a 4th place finish statewide). Throughout the year, your marching band came in first place in their class at each of the four regional shows that they attended, as well as winning Music and General Effect at every show. Earlier this season, at our District Evaluation, we were one of four bands to receive straight Superior ratings, the highest rating attainable by a band. With all of these victories, your marching band has finished the season undefeated among all Lee & Collier County Bands for the fourth straight year. Please congratulate your marching band students when you see them walking through the halls for completing another extremely successful marching season.

Professional and Creative Writing ClubStudents have been hard at work in the Writing Club crafting short stories, poems, and even full-length novels the past several months! Two students submitted their poetry for the Florida Young Poet's contest while others participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). We are currently hearing a number of great student-led presentations on different writing topics each week as well as frequent prose and poetry slams! The passion for the written word is certainly in fashion this year. We look forward to seeing what the Club will have to share in the months to come!

Drama DepartmentRehearsals have become a ‘habit’ for the drama department’s musical production of “Nunsense”. This classic musical follows 5 nuns who have been tasked with fundraising money to pay for the funeral expenses of the other sisters in the order who died of food poisoning from a gazpacho made by Sister Julia, Child of God. You’ll meet Mother Superior, who is not serious and straight laced all the time, as we find out, and Sister Mary Hubert, the 2nd in command who is always competing with her, trying to win over the top job. The others include Sister Robert Ann the street wise girl from Brooklyn who can drive a car, Sister Mary Leo who wants to become the first Nun Ballerina, and who can forget Sister Mary Amnesia, who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. The convent is filled with fun during this quick witted musical journey. Join us for the show Thursday April 12, Friday April 13 and Saturday April 14th at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students and senior citizens and $10 for adults.

Book ClubThe first year of the renewed Mariner High School Book Club, the Round Table of Contents, is well underway! Students have just finished reading Frankenstein, the classic Gothic horror tale, by Mary Shelley. Earlier in the year we also read Inside the Painting by Mr. Arciero and discussed some ideas for future monthly novels to come. One of Tolkien’s works, The Hobbit, is set for the early spring months, as well as The Little Prince, which has been made into a Netflix movie only recently. We are excited to continue reading, sharing, and discussing ideas on some engaging new page-turners soon!

Key ClubMariner High School’s Key Club is starting the 2018 school year remodeling the second courtyard garden which will be used as an educational tool as well as to plant flowers which will ultimately be given to veterans. With the leadership of elected garden committee heads, Victoria Errett and Anna Loremas, as well as the sponsors, Mrs. Faasse and Ms. Pattillo, the Mariner Key Club and its members are making an impact when it comes to helping the school and community be more proactive and green.

In December, Mariner Key Club volunteered at various events spreading holiday cheer. One example was our December DCM with the elderly residents of Gulf Coast Village. A DCM (District Conventional Meeting) is where Key Club members and other officers from different schools come together and talk about the past events their clubs have done. Key Club members spread holiday cheer by playing holiday games with the residents and making hot cocoa for them. Other events that Mariner Key Club participated in were the Holiday Festival of Lights and Holidays without Hunger. For Holiday Festival of Lights, Key Club members helped out running concessions and parking for the annual holiday festival in downtown Cape Coral. For Holidays without Hunger, Key Club members participated in making over 550,000 meals for those who are less fortunate during the holiday season.

Our upcoming Key Club events include: The Daddy Daughter Dance, Spring Zone Rally, Tour De Cape, District Conventional Meeting, and Mariner Key Club Car Washes.

Raider TeamsOut of 30 male teams, Cody Newland and Shayne Johnston are the State of Florida 2017 Male Best Raider Champions and Kenny Smith and Brayson Tan-dy placed 5th. Out of 20 female teams Jessi-ca Sinno and Delaney Gilbert placed 5th and Ashlyn Washko and Ash-ley Sanders placed 8th. There were 50 teams in total at the competition and our Raiders repre-sented our school, our program, and family in true first class fashion. "Go Tritons!" Coaches Master Sergeant Miller and Command Ser-geant Major Ray Devens.

JV Raider Females and Males became Dis-trict Champions as well as the Varsity Team; making it a clean sweep. This has only been done twice in Lee County and both times by your Triton Raiders. Please congratulate our Raiders. Mariner Leadership Academy Instructors and Raider Coaches Master Ser-geant Pat Miller and Command Sergeant Major Ray Devens.

Out of 91 teams across the country, our Varsity

Female Raiders ranked 4th and Males ranked 9th in the Nation. What an incredible com-petition. Our Females were tied with the Na-tional Champions, but incurred 2 penalties which bumped them to 4th. Our Males were on track for 4th place and had a Raider go down on the 5K, which bumped them to 9th place. But our Raiders displayed true GRIT. #Phenomenal! Master Sergeant Miller.

Our Varsity Raiders did a phenom-enal job today at the District Varsity Raider meet placing both 1st place in the Female and Male catego-ry--clinching a slot in the State and Nation-al finals. The Males placed 1st in 5 out of 5 events and the Females placed 1st in 4 out of 5 events. They scored their personal best as a team in every event, giving 100% "and then

some"! Coach-es/ Instructors MSG Pat Miller and CSM Ray Devens.
