UnitsUnits organized by Counties. Some Units are 1 County, others are 2 or 3.Each Unit has an appointed Chair and Co-chair as well as a Steering CommitteeUnit Areas:

Regional MapNorthwest Region include the units of Sussex-Warren, Hunterdon-Somerset and Morris.

Northeast Region include the units of Bergen-Passaic Essex, Hudson and Union.

Central Region include the units of Monmouth-Ocean, Mercer-Burlington and Middlesex

Southern Region include units of Camden-Gloucester-Salem, Atlantic-Cape May-Cumberland.

Role of Unit Chair and Co-Chair

Plan and host meetings/activities for your Unit at least four (4) times a yearCommunicate NASW news and information to members in conjunction with Regional RepresentativesCommunicate Unit news and information to Chapter office to highlight in NASW publicationsWelcome new members in your unit and encourage others to joinEncourage members to run for office and nominate members for NASW awards

Role of Regional RepresentativesWill serve as the Board liaison to Unit leaders (Chair, Co-chair, Steering Committee)

When a position becomes vacant, will help identify potential Unit leaders.

Will attend Unit meeting(s) organized by a new Unit leader (when possible) and help leaders develop a Steering Committee for their Unit (if needed).

Will help “roll out” new ideas/programs in their regions/Units (e.g. promoting Prospective SW program, share information re: Conference and CE programs, etc.).

Will assist in bringing Unit leadership from their Region to report at Board meetings (each Unit to report annually).

Role of Steering Committee

A Steering Committee consists of 6-10 Unit members who assist the Unit Leaders with planning and hosting Unit activities and meetings.

Provide meeting refreshments, assist in finding meeting locations and speakers, generate service project ideas, contact new members, and PR.

The Committee helps to engage Unit members and develop future leadership.

Unit Events ~ The Basics

Types of Events Networking, social,

educational, continuing education, social work month event, public service, or volunteer

Location to Host & Time Assisted living facilities,

libraries, non-profit organizations, Chapter office, restaurants

Meetings run 2-hours, weekday evenings or weekends.

Choose a Topic & Invite a Speaker Unit member, other

professionals, Chapter staff, or social work professionals

Involve Your Members Ask for ideas Invite them to join

Steering Committee Encourage them to bring

a friend (non-members can attend one meeting before they are asked to join.)

Unit Event ~ Announce Your Event

Schedule & Promote Your Meeting to NASW Members (in this order please): Complete ‘Meeting Form’ located on NASW-NJ website;

Staff will post meeting on NASW website Calendar and send the Unit

Chairs a Registration Link to see the event and an RSVP Link to see

who has registered to attend;

Send an email to your Unit Listserv to announce meeting; include the

Registration Link and ask members to complete the registration form;

Chapter will promote meeting in newSWire™;

Send out reminder email to your Unit Listserv.

Promotion should not imply endorsement of a specific person, product,

or service by NASW or NASW-NJ.

Unit Event ~ HostingNetworking time before the meeting begins

Basic Introductions – (helps with networking).

Welcome Regional Rep and/or NASW-NJ Staff (if present).

Share NASW/NASW-NJ News & Upcoming Events with attendees (if no Regional Rep or Staff)

Purchase simple refreshments (maximum $7.50 per person) based on headcount (pizza & soda, donuts & coffee, cheese & crackers)

Sign-in sheet (available in Unit Manual)

Speaker, Program or Discussion Topic

Fill out Meeting Summary form (available in Unit Manual) and email to Janine Hendryx with any pictures you have from the meeting (no PDFs please).

Continuing Education Events(program under development)

Units can offer CEU events as a way to encourage attendance and recruitment.Call Kendra Hayes, Director of Continuing Education, at least 60 days in advance, to discuss topics and schedule program. Identify and reserve free location (minimum of 30 seats). Check with your Unit members ~ they often have ideas for program locations including agencies, schools or libraries.Chapter will promote event on the web site Calendar Promote your event to your members through your listservChapter will mail CEU materials and instructions to ChairRemember: Non-members will pay $30 at the door

Unit Leadership Orientation & Trainings= 1 CEU Certificate for each

4 Unit events = 1 CEU Certificate

You may receive a maximum of 5 CEU certificates during any given fiscal year.

CEU certificates are not redeemable for the Annual Conference or special CEU events. CEU certificates may not be transferred to other members.
