Leading powerhouses of the future – MIPIM city investment forum

The case is now made that cities are the powerhouses of regional economies. They provide the labour, jobs, business, innovation, skills, infrastructure, housing and markets that drive and sustain growth. However, the importance of city leadership and governance has been largely underestimated. It is all the more important for cities to begin to share best practice, and to implement good governance models based on examples of what works. The European Cities Partnership, comprising Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, Manchester and Stockholm, has collaborated at MIPIM previously, and this event will build on both the OECD New Growth and Investment Statistics Report launched in 2013 and the work with the Brookings Institute in 2014 which emphasised the role of cities in growth.

In 2015, investors from the cities, alongside civic representatives, will explore the interim findings of a newly commissioned OECD report on city governance and the role of leadership.

Greening up the city: Challenges for Real Estate

Today’s sweeping urbanisation raises the essential issue of the relationship between built-up and natural areas.

Expanding green spaces is just one possible response to the situation; roofs, facades, even workspaces are also getting greener. Vegetation has conquered every bit of the city right down to our buildings. In this movement that takes the term “green building” literally, thinkers, architects, developers, businesses, public authorities, and inhabitants all have their part to play.

From the metropolitan zone as a whole to local districts to individual buildings, how can “greening up” create value?

This round table, organised to accompany the publication of ESSEC’s third Cahier de la Chaire Immobilier et Développement Durable entitled “Greening up the city: challenges for real estate”, will discuss new economic models for the green city and green buildings of the future.

Smart Cities: spreading happiness through innovation

We are delighted to invite you to a breakfast briefing at MIPIM 2015 in Cannes, where Canary Wharf Group will introduce their cutting edge smart city technology innovation initiative: Cognicity, PiLabs will showcase its ground-breaking PropTech accelerator and Prof. Carlo Ratti of MIT’s SENSEable City Labs will contribute to a fascinating group discussion on smart and happy cities.

We will hear from the Cognicity programme, PiLabs and Prof. Ratti on the ‘happiness factor’ behind their work on smart cities. The group will then enjoy an informal discussion about the correlation between smart city solutions and happiness, where we will consider:

Leading examples of smart cities from around the world, and their impact on residentsOur predictions for the future – how will technology help create a better quality of life, a positive relationship between people and their cities, and more efficient and productive societies? What’s next for smart cities? Focus on Spain: from hell’s door to real estate haven?

Until two years ago Spain was a difficult place to invest.

Today it is in the spotlight again.A low interest-rate environment in much of the world combined with high market yields has made Spain one of the main destinations of international investors. But what’s really happening in the Spanish Real Estate market?

Is the Spanish Real Estate market today just a hunting field for opportunistic investors or is it back to a long term recovery?

What’s the role of the “Bad Bank” Sareb and of SOCIMIS (REITS), and what are they doing as new big players in the market?

The panel will analyse the last market trends and give an outlook on what is expected in the fore coming months.
