new satellite location for university of utah architecture, located off-campus in downtown salt lake. an architecture school may work much like the brain, providing flexible space with many connective paths.

an axon is a nerve in the brain that transmits signals & information. thinking about how the brain controls the body proved to be a guiding light for this design.
historya 3 story turn of the century building burned down in a fire. the building hosted a variety of uses over its life.
current conditionsinfill urban site with an alley to the north & a 4 story building due south.

inspired by the notion of a control center, the collaborative nature of architecture is represented as the “brain” of the building. from the idea-generating brain, students & faculty branch out to other parts of the building in order to get work done.

vertical copper fins protect the exposedwest facade from the hottest summer sunin the afternoons. the fins resemble theformal language of the axon.

redwood fence designed for a typical salt lake bungalow.
4x4 posts & alternating 1x4 & 1x6 slats separated by a 0.5” reveal.
standing 3.5’ high, the gate meets the aesthetic, functional & privacy needs of the home-owners.

light fixturedesign based on the studio axon study model.
light from a 10” 75 watt bulb is filtered through translucent paper & diffused by 1/4” fins of mdf & blue acrylic.
the interior space of the lamp - the axon - produces a glowing, pulsating light.

westside arts9th west & 9th south in slc neighborhood revitalization project.the building is designed around 2’ thick concrete walls which host art both inside & outside the building.
features performance space, gallery, workshops & a restaurant in order to provide a “3rd place” for all ages that is currently missing in this neighborhood.

design a kiosk in an urbanpark setting that enables the florist to safely secure the product overnight.
using the flower as inspriration, the design unfolds fromthe “locked” position from3 pivot points, much likethe flower radiates fromits center point.

to deal with the intense sun & wind exposure at great salt lake, a thin shell concrete canopy shields the elements & recalls a wind-filled sail.
the organic forms of the building are juxtaposed with the rocky, harsh & mountainous environment.
the form of the building was in-spired by a section view of a cata-maran hull.

performing centerartsproposal for salt lake community college’s south campus, which is morphing into an arts & new media hub for the college.
designed to house 3 large theaters plus all support spaces for music, theater & dance, the 65,000 square foot building would redefine the campus.
17
programmatically, the building is divid-ed into 3 zones: learning, rehearsing &performing. there is a natural progres-sion from one end of the building to the other, culminating in the performance.
this idea of crescendo is embodied in the form of the building.
spaces get larger & volumes increase as you near the performance zone. this zone expresses itself differently than the other sections, introducing a dynamic angle & allowing generous space for lobby functions.

from a distance, the building appears much like a watch tower, symbolizing the cur-rent state of anxiety that exists between citizens and technology like cameras.
