All the world’s a stage

All the Sibenik streets, stairs, squares, passages, the waterfront, parks, the Cathedral and the theatre belong to the numerous stages which become lively and busy during summer time at the unique world performance, the International Children’s Festival. This year from the 20th of June until the 4th of July the city will come alive to the 49th festival

Welcome to our beautiful city and to the eleventh edition of the second season of “The Sibenik Times”. The tourist season is in full swing. Whereas it seemed a few weeks ago, when the rain was falling and the temperature was fifteen degrees lower, that the summer would be a washout, both in weather terms and business terms. There were horror stories of the global recession completely killing our tourist industry, that tourists would look for cheaper options or not go anywhere on holiday. But these rumours seem, at least until now, to be unfounded. Even though the statistics will show a small drop in guests during the early part of the season there is no reason for mass panic. I recently spoke to the mayor of Primošten and he told me that they were expecting an increase of around 25% this season. It’s true that hotel accommodation is less full than last year but it seems that private accom-modation, camps and marina business is well up on last season. And there is no sign that cruise ship business has dropped off at all as there seems to be more cruise ships and more pas-sengers than ever before. I guess at the end of the day people will always go on holiday no matter what the fi-nancial climate is like and no matter how deep the recession is. Maybe it is time for the Croatian Tourist Board to change their marketing slogan to “take a holiday you deserve it” instead of “Croatian - a small country for a big holiday.” After all if all you’ve heard is doom and gloom for the last year its time to put your feet up, relax and keep your mind off your problems. In fact I even read in an English news-paper at the weekend that the end of the world recession was in sight so by the time you get back home things may be better. European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn announced last week in Brussels that he expected Croatia’s EU accession negotiations wo-uld soon be unblocked and the process moved forward. That question would be discussed at a meeting of EU, Croatian and Slovene ministers of foreign affairs on Monday in Luxembourg, Rehn said. Slovenia has blocked the opening of additio-nal chapters in Croatia’s EU accession negotiations because of a dispute over its maritime boundary with Croatia. Mr. Rehn said: "For the last six mon-ths, we have been working on finding the best so-lution to the border dispute between Croatia and Slovenia. We are close to succeeding, and I believe it is time to end this process and unblock Croatia’s EU accession negotiations."

Almost 400,000 tourists headed to the Adriatic last weekend as Croats took a long weekend break for the Corpus Chri-sti holiday celebrated on Thursday the 11th of June. Croatian auto club (HAK) warned of traffic jams on highways as well as border as foreign tourists also came to the country. Split airport was

expected to handle 25,000 passengers on more than 100 flights over the four days of the long weekend. Although HAK also warned that there could be traffic problems on Sunday as holidaymakers head home after the long weekend, the roads and border crossing moved relati-vely freely.

The British Foreign Office has changed its tra-vel advisory warning about organized crime in Croatia. The office’s official website says Croatia has a low crime rate and violent crime is rare. The office is also warning UK citizens they should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terro-rist attacks, which could target civilians in places frequented by tourists. The former travel advisory for Croatia had claimed there was a latent danger of terrorism and organized crime in Croatia, Hina news agency has reported. Croatian Foreign Af-fairs and European Integration Minister Gordan Jandrokovic had responded to the former advisory by asserting it had not reflected the real security situation in Croatia. Around 267,000 British to-urists visit Croatia annually and have few if any problems, the Foreign Office has said.

An Austrian yacht has been seized by Croatian authorities over illegal chartering. Maritime authorities said the 21-metres long ‘Nikita’, owned by a German leasing company, is being held in Sibenik until a court ruling on Fri-

day. The Nikita’s Austrian skipper has already been fined 700 Euros for having an incomplete passenger list – he was carrying four Austrian tourists – but co-uld face a fine of up to 68,000 Euros for illegal chartering.

Budget airline easyJet has suggested that the reasons to take a holiday to Croatia’s Dalmatia coast “are seemingly never-ending”. In a statement, the carrier said a Croatia travel experience provides good value for money for tourists, as we-ll as summer temperatures in the region of 26 to 30 degrees C. British tourists in particular were encouraged to take a va-cation in the country - as it was revealed recently that less than three per cent of Croatia’s visitors come from the UK. Ro-

utes between Britain and the Dalmatia region are provided by easyJet - from Liverpool, Bristol and Gatwick airports. Paul Simmons, UK general manager for easyJet, explained: “Croatia is one of Europe’s most popular holiday destina-tions, but most Brits are still in the dark about what it has to offer.” Indeed, the Austrian Times recently indicated that Croatia is one of the top holiday destina-tions for Austrians, while Slovenians’ fa-vourite country is their Balkan neighbour.

MARKETING THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Croatian Minister of Health Darko Mi-linovic has dismissed media speculation about amendment of the anti-smoking law or postponement of its enforcement. Milinovic did so during his meeting last week with the Croatian Employers Asso-ciation (HUP) members. He said: “The government would be very foolish to ma-ke concessions only one month after a new law had entered into force. We will see after six to nine months how much impact the law has really had on bars and restaurants.

We can talk about it in the autumn.”

Milinovic added it was not true that Cro-atian restaurants had suffered an 80-per-cent drop in customer numbers since the new anti-smoking law entered into force in May. The minister said: “Around 30 per cent of Croats are smokers and the other 70 per cent are non-smokers. I want to protect non-smokers and will not agree to any changes in the law that endanger them.” The minister noted smoking killed some 15,000 Croats annually and recom-mended that restaurant proprietors find ways to attract more guests, such as lower prices.

A new scheme has been launched by Croatia’s national tourist board to try and tempt more peo-ple to take a vacation to the country. Head of the organisation Niko Bulic told the AFP news agency this week that the internet will be the main tool in expressing the benefits of a holiday Croatia style. The social networking phenomenon - which has be-come popular thanks to the emergence of websites such as Facebook and Twitter in recent years - will be used to try and get people discussing what is so good about staying in Croatian accommodati-on. Welcometocroatia.com.hr will be the internet portal providing people with the opportunity to share their experiences of Croatian villas and the like. “Our main goal for this season is to be equal or better than our competition,” Mr Bulic explained.

The President of the People’s Republic of China Hu Jintao will arrive in Croatia on a two-day offi-cial visit on the 19th of June. Hu Jintao is coming as the special guest of Croatian President Stjepan Mesic. Hu Jintao will meet with Mesic, Prime Mi-nister Ivo Sanader and Croatian Parliament Pre-sident Luka Bebic. The guest will be accompanied by around 200 Chinese entrepreneurs who will take part in a Croatian - Chinese economic forum in Zagreb. Mesic’s office said last week that the Chinese president’s visit to Croatia would be ad-ditional confirmation of successful cooperation between the two countries. Mesic met with Hu Jintao during in 2002 and in 2008 in China, the second time on the occasion of the Beijing Olym-pic Games.


Around the county

The first women’s match race was held in Rogoznica from the 10th of June to the 14th of June and proved not only to be of in-terest to the yachting world but also of great interest to the gene-ral public. Six crews, four from Croatia one from the Netherlan-ds and one from Portugal, com-peted over the four days. The Croatian crews included Frapa sailing team from Split, Štrige from Zagreb, She team from Sibenik and SCOR from Rijeka. The team from Pula, Rijeka ski-pped by Petra Kliba succeeded in winning the regatta while the silver medal was won by the Frapa sailing team skippered by Tihana Tadinac. Finally the crew from the Netherlands, skippered by Klaartje Zuiderbaan, battled hard to the end and won the bronze award. The crew from the Netherlands also included two crew members from Au-stria, Ute Wagner, and Sloveni-an, Lena Koter. The awards and recognitions were presented by Mr. Boris Kero, secretary of the Yacht Club Frapa. The race took part in the seas around Rogozni-ca and the organiser of this four day event was the Frapa Yacht Club. The great interest shown

by the public was also shown when the Croatian TV station HTV interviewed the crews for a special programme.

Recently the Women’s match race (WMR) has become an Ol-ympic discipline and the event in Rogoznica was evaluated as a Grade 3 event on the ISAF rankings list. According to Mr. Davor Duplančić, the director of the regatta, the target for the organisers is to make next years event a Grade 2 ranked event and by 2011 to send a Croatian crew to the Olympics in London. In fact the main referee for the whole regatta was Mr. Mike Bu-tterfield from London who was assisted by another four referees.

The opening ceremony for the regatta was also used to raise the international symbol for clean seas the “Blue Flag.” In fact this was the ninth year in a row that Marina Frapa has been awarded this prestigious honour, that’s a distinction they can be proud of. The blue flag was raised, to the sound of the Croatian National Anthem, by Dr. Mladen Pavić. The crews cer-tainly enjoyed the opening ce-remony as they tasted local spe-cialities and cocktails and then

moved to the marina’s pool area to continue the entertainment. After the jollities it was down to business on the second day and the crews certainly meant business as the day proved acti-on packed. Firstly the conditions were excellent for sailing with steady winds and relatively calm seas. After spending some time getting to know each other the second day brought many exci-ting matches, protests and even unfortunately an intervention by the doctor. The team from Por-tugal were forced to switch Ana Simoes after she was injured in a match with the Croatian She Team. The semi finals on day four, the 14th of June, brought hard and competitive sailing. The Croatian crew SCOR beat the Portuguese ladies and anot-her Croatian team, Frapa sailing team, just won a very hard race with the team from the Nether-lands. A truly great days sailing fought in the right spirit. Finally the last match and the ladies from Pula hang on to win. As the Marina Frapa announced “The champagne is ready, medals are ready.” All in all a very well or-ganised regatta fought with six teams who all sailed to win.


Around the county

RogoznicaIn a deep natural bay protec-

ted from rough seas and strong winds lies the beautiful village of Rogoznica. The entire cove is enclosed from the elements and because of its excellent position the village is considered an exce-llent location for relaxing and enjoying oneself. Thanks to the local people keeping and preser-ving their traditions the resort is now a great “get away” from the hustle and bustle of every-day life. After spending some time there you will soon forget about your problems as the pla-ce seems to have its own built-in stress relief. Moments of pleasu-re on some of the many natural beaches, will soon take you out of tensions and give you the energy to explore the rest of the region under a hot Mediterrane-an sun. Rogoznica is a village and a harbour in a cove bearing the same name, around 25 km south of the city of Sibenik. The chief occupations are farming, fishing and tourism. The villa-ge is located on the peninsula; the former islet of Kopara was connected with the mainland by an artificial dyke in the second half of the 19th century, which divides the cove of Luka Rogo-znica into the western and the eastern part. The part of Rogo-znica that lies on the mainland was populated already in 1390. In 1518 the inhabitants fled in

front of the Turkish army to sa-fety of the nearby islet. The cove of Rogoznica east of Cape Ploce is a favourable shelter for yachts. Rogoznica lies on a local road, branching off from the main road (M2, E65). Rogoznica was populated as early as ancient times. The parish church was built in 1615 and reconstructed in the 19th century. On top of its village are the remains of a for-tification; the construction was started by the French in 1809. In the Rogoznica field are mediae-val churches of St. Nicholas and St. John of Trogir, both construc-ted in the mediaeval Dalmatian architectural styles. In fact the Church of St. John is the oldest historical monument in Rogo-znica built in 1324. An artificial island was made in the bay in 1993-1996, to be used as a ma-rina. Obviously the town has a strong connection and tradition with the sea. This is shown in the restaurants menus which offer fresh fish is every day along with sea food and among nume-rous local gastronomic specialti-es the best is fish soup prepared Rogoznica style. In and around Rogoznica there are 2.500 beds in private accommodation and several private restaurants. In the summer season the Tourist Association of Rogoznica orga-nizes a series of events, with the traditional Rogoznica Fishermen

Evening being the central event. The Gradina peninsula is also the site of the lake of Zmajevo oko which contains sea water. The lake is of irregular oval shape (150 by 70 meters), with an area of 5.300 sq meters, and maximum depth of 15 meters. The lake is considered to be a natural bioreactor with intensi-ve biochemical processes taking place there. Close by this natu-ral phenomenon, in the cove of Soline, there is Marina Frapa, a high-class marina with 400 berths and numerous facilities. And if you are a lover of all thin-gs nautical then this is the per-fect resort for you. Along with the first class mooring available there is also complete shelter from winds coming from any di-rection. The resort of Rogoznica truly is a sailor’s paradise. The-re are as well many other water sports on offer, from diving to wind surfing and jet skis, if you are a beginner or a professional you’re sure to find something to suit your taste. On the tip of the peninsula of Gradina is a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Chapel patron of the Rogoznica people and harbour since 1722. This is connected to the legend about the miraculous painting found by the fisherman Ivan M. Bogovčić Tumburko, and to the church holiday which has been observed since 1887.


ST. KRšEVAN CHURCH This church is the oldest kept sacral

facility, dated back to the 17th century. It was built in a Romanesque style. Until World War II it served for worship, and was extremely damaged during the war. After its restoration, it became a gallery area for the Šibenik Museum and today it is the Gallery of St. Krševan. Located next to the church is the oldest bell in Croatia, built in 1266 and found under the sea near the island of Silba.

ST. MARTIN CHURCH St. Martin Church was raised in the

beginning for the 17th century out of dre-ssed white stone and dominates in the center part of Dolac. The church is ador-ned with a rosette on which the Twelve Apostle’s medallions are carved. The bu-ilding of the church was initiated by the Confraternity of St. Mark, by whose merit an organ was obtained in 1776.

CHURCH OF "GOSPE VANKA GRADA"Church of “Gospe Vanka Grada” was

raised in a location where in medieval ti-mes was a cemetery and the small chur-ch of St. Kuzma and Damjan (1452). Af-ter the Parish of Varoš was established (1604), the adaptation of the old church began, which was extended, and in 1740 the construction of the new stone church was completed. Some time later, a bell tower was built which was connected to the church by a small bridge. In front of and around the “Gospe Vanka Grada” Church was the public cemetery which was abandoned in 1828.

NEW CHURCHNew Church is a Renaissance style

shrine from the transitional period of the 15th and 16th century. Nicholas of Florence has been mentioned as one of its builders. His stone sculpture the “Pie-ta” and relief “Removing Christ from the Cross” are carved in the lower section of the bell tower.

ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH St. Nicholas Church was raised in the

17th century in a Baroque style. Located inside, along with a number of tombs, are sailboat models as votive offerings. Its facade ends with a distaff shaped bell tower, and the bottom parts are divided by widows and a portal of simple frames. Inside, on the cassetted ceiling fields, you can find holy icons and portraits of do-nators in folk costumes and inscriptions with their names.

ST. ELIzAbETH CHURCH St. Elizabeth Church derives from the

16th century and is located in city district of Crnica. It is considered that around the church during the last century there have been findings of remains of old buildings where according to tradition King Bela IV found shelter while fleeing from the Tatars and Mongols. After World War II

the church was completely remodeled and a parish pastoral center was added on. Next to the St. Elizabeth Church, the St. Leopold Church was built as one of the first post war sacral facilities.

CHURCH OF "USPENIE bOGOMATERE" Church of "Uspenie Bogomatere" was

built in the location where the Templars lived in the 12th century. It is a Baroque building from the 17th – 18th century. Until the beginning of the 19th century it was the Catholic Church of Holy Salvati-on, and it belonged to the women’s Bene-dictine monastery. In 1810, by Napoleon’s decision, the church was surrendered to the Orthodox episcope Bendedikt Kra-ljević. The church is accented with a Ba-roque bell tower from the beginning of the 18th century, which is a work by the native craftsman Ivan Skoko.

ST. GREGORY CHURCH

St. Gregory church is located in the ol-dest street in Šibenik, Ulica Jurja Dalma-tinca, where his home can also be found. Featured in this small Gothic style church are constant thematic exhibitions of “Ju-raj Dalmatinac and his works outside of Šibenik.”

ST. DOMINIC CHURCH St. Dominic church is located in the

western part of the city on the shore. Until 1910 it was a Renaissance building, but it then takes on Gothic style charac-teristics. Located inside the church are two valuable wooden alters, the tomb of the Bishop Arrigonio from Šibenik, and an organ that was built in 1818 by the craftsman Gaetano Macatelli.

CHURCH AND MONASTERY OF ST. FRANCIS

St. Francis Church was raised in the second half of the 14th century at the furthest south-east part of the historic city core. The church represents spacious single vessel Gothic style architecture wi-thout architectural decorative elements. In the 15th century at the northern si-de, the Holy Cross Chapel was added on and the presbytery with the shrine was rearranged. In the front of the church is the main entrance with a Gothic style stone frame, and visible in the lunette are the remains of frescos from the 14th century. Located in the Holy Cross Cha-pel is an organ that was built in 1762 by Petar Nakić, a renowned maker of these instruments. Located within the archi-tectural complex of Šibenik’s Conventu-al-Fransiscans, on the south side of the church, is a monastery dated back to the 14th century. Since cultural-historic wor-ks of art were collected in this monastery for many centuries, today, it represents a place where a great deal of monumental city heritage is kept. The monastery li-brary is accentuated with a collection of 140 incunabula as well as a collection of hand-written codices.

Porthole to the past – the churches of Sibenik


It’s that time of the year aga-in, the time that Sibenik opens its doors and its streets to the sights and sounds of the International Children’s festival. So what can we expect to see being perfor-med, well the festival always has many exciting performances from Croatian and foreign arti-sts and this year is no different. Let’s take a look at what we can expect.

Drama For many years, Croatian and

foreign repertory companies have followed one another, on the open stage in front of the old Sibenik town hall and in the municipal theatre, responding to the eternal call of the historic spirit. The spectator area is too small to receive all those who want to see everything that the performers have to offer, and it is no wonder that house windows have become theatre boxes and stairways are used as stalls. From them one gets the best view of that the writers have imagined, producers planned, and actors realised with the sorcery of their unique skill.

Visual arts To draw means to leave a

trace. To leave a trace means to

live. The suit white billboards of Sibenik are waiting to receive the wealth of the child’s world whi-ch, in the children’s clumsy yet masterful little fingers, using pen-cils, crayons, brushes, plasticine and clay, turns into an amazing and unrepeatable fantasy world and a joyful addition to the rest of the Festival programmes. Ru-bbing shoulders with children in Sibenik we find the most eminent Croatia artists, painters and sculptors, who have preser-ved and cultivated the precious link with the experiences of pure childhood.

Music Music is in us and around us.

It is everywhere. It is present in the stone harmony of the great works of Juraj Dalmatinac, in the spontaneous singing of po-pular vocal groups on any one of Sibenik’s echoing squares. Music, vocal or instrumental, composed or folk music, is an element of the rich offerings of the International Children’s Festi-val in Sibenik. In the cacophony of the loud modern world, many of Sibenik’s summer nights, du-ring the Festival, turn into a ce-lebration of man’s most ancient skills, a holiday of rhythm, sound and harmony. In its many forms,

Mrs. Ramljak, the manager of the Sibenik Children’s Festival, has been in-volved in the festival and her life and it’s easy to conclude that she knows it like the palm of her hand. In her own words she is in love not only with the festival but with her job. The Sibenik Times caught up with her last week and she was kind enough to explain this year’s program as well as her own personal thoughts about her life long love affair.

• What can we expect from this year’s festival?

Firstly I must say that this year’s festi-val will be the 49th and I’m particularly proud of that fact. As you probably alre-ady know we are, in my opinion, the best children’s festival in the world. This year we have around 147 different programs over the two weeks of the festival and we have 125 varying artists.

• What does the festival mean to you?It’s hard to say exactly what it means

to me. In fact I would say that it means my whole life. I am very passionate about my festival. I think it’s very important to enjoy the job you do, it’s much easier for you to work and at the end of the day the job returns pleasure to you. I must say I really love my job. As far as I am concer-ned I have the best job in the world. I get to work with children and with culture, a perfect combination.

• How long have you been involved in the festival?

I’ve been involved pretty much all my life. I grew up with the festival and feel in love at an early age. For the last 29 years I’ve been working in some capacity in the festival. I think it’s safe to say that I know the festival inside out.

• What, for you, is the highlight of this year’s festival?

That’s a very difficult question to an-swer. It’s like you ask a mother which is her favorite child, impossible to answer. I personally hate this question because we have no one highlight, for me every per-formance is its own highlight. Everybody involved in the program is number one for me. It’s a little bit like the Edinburgh Festival, they also don’t give highlights, they simply say that if you are in the pro-gram then you are number one. The key words are the art and the child, the art with a capital A and the children sitting in the audience. If you know about the sum-mer festival that they have in Dubrovnik, then we say that what the Dubrovnik fe-stival is for adults we are for children. After all if we don’t catch the public in Sibenik then they won’t get an audience in Dubrovnik.

• How difficult is it to organize the whole event?

Well, to arrange the performers from Croatia we have a select team that deci-des which are the best and then they get invited. For artists from outside of Cro-atia we can’t afford to travel around so we have cultural attachés and friends in the arts who recommended performers to us. These people are like ambassadors for the Children’s festival. Due to logistic problems we prepare the international program two years in advance. There is a lot of interest from abroad and just this year we received 123 applications for fo-reign artists.

• Can you sum up the festival for you?After my son it’s the most important

thing in my life.

music links the performers and audiences of all races in an inte-gral artistic experience, enabling them, over the years, to make their creative contribution to the building of a nobler, culturally conscious man. Singers, dancers, instrumentalists, ballerinas, en-tertainers, folk musicians-they all find a suitable refuge among the historic stone monuments of Sibenik, so that they can ma-ke a bond between art, the hu-man soul, and the unforgettable atmosphere of the International Children’s Festival.

Puppets, puppets... Puppets have long been accep-

ted as fellow-citizens of Sibenik. They have turned the whole city into a big playroom-a real one, as well as an imaginary one-whi-ch is their true habitat. Puppets are ideal impersonations of figu-res born from the unreachable depths of children’s imagination and returning to it sa a sanctuary grazed and burdened with the experience of the adult world. All of the Croatian puppet thea-tres and many foreign ones have participated in the International Children’s Festival in Sibenik. Every one of these performances was a new delight pleasure and experience.

Film & television Film was added to the Festival

programme in 1977. There had been film screening earlier too, but from that year it became a recognised and distinct part of the Festival. In addition to the screening of the best Croatian films for children, the intentions was to evaluate earlier films and to acquaint new generations of children with the classics of forei-gn and Croatian cinematography. The main emphasis, of course, is placed on children’s creativity in film-making. A logical next step was the opening of the animated film workshop (1983) to serve as a focal for training in animated film making.

blic figures have visited the Inter-national Children’s Festival, thus showing their appreciation for the work of the artists and children and of all those whose efforts, as-pirations and creativity make the Festival possible. Many world ar-tists have enriched the Festival wi-th their presence. nerous and warm. Every week we’ll bring you a few short fact files of different areas of life in the county so that you can better comprehend the culture that surrounds you.

Heritage is our legacy from the past, values which we enjoy today and wealth that we will le-ave to our children. Our natural and cultural heritage presents an irreplaceable sprint of life and inspiration. Unique places, structures and natural pheno-menon make up our world’s he-ritage. They are monuments of one country, nation or culture, but they belong to all of human race equally. United Nations’ UNESCO has set as one of its main missions the identificati-on and protection of such world heritage sites. This mission has been formally embodied in the Convention concerning the Pro-tection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972. The result of the UNESCO mission is a list of 830 localities of world cultu-ral and natural heritage.

Sibenik is a town of sport and youth. Athletes in Sibenik have to their disposal an average of 40 different buildings: 3 soccer fields, 2 pools, a large sports hall in Baldekin, 9 smaller sports halls, 2 tennis court complexes, a number of bowling alleys, a rowing centre in Zaton (one of the best rowing tracks in Europe), etc. The most noticeable results Sibenik athle-tes have accomplished are in rowing (27 rowers of the “Krka” rowing club, have participated in the Olympic Games: Ber-lin 1936, London 1960, Rome 1960, and

Munich 1972; champion sculler Damir Trlaja), men's and women's basketball (state champions; international players Dražen Petrović, Aleksander Petrović, Da-nir Nakić, and others.), water polo (W.P.C “Solaris»; the best water polo player in the world Perica Bukić, Siniša Belamarić and others.), soccer (F.C Šibenik), swim-ming( state champions in youth categori-es), bowling (state champions), combat sports (state champions), bodybuilding (Vedran Jakšić, state champion 8 times and world champion).

Nikola Tavelić (c.1340 – November 14, 1391) is a saint of the Catholic Church. This Franciscan mi-ssionary, who died a martyr's death in Jerusalem, was the first Croatian saint. Most sources mention Šibenik as Nikola's birthplace, but another possible location is Velim near Stankovci. In 1365, Nikola became a friar in Bribir, the seat of the Šubić, a powerful Croatian noble family. Nikola was among 60 priests from various Franciscan provinces who were called by the Bosnian vicar, motivated by Po-pe Gregory XI, to work as missionaries in Bosnia. He spread Catholicism around Bosnia for 12 years. In his report to the pope, the Bosnian vicar later sa-id that the missionaries converted around 50,000 Bosnian heretics. In 1384, Nikola went to Palesti-ne with the Franciscans Deodatus and Peter from Narbonne and Stephen from Cuneo. He stayed in the Mount Sion Monastery in Jerusalem, learning Arabian and visiting holy places. Together with his three friends, he was brought before the qadi of Jerusalem and sentenced to death.

The Falcon Centre is loca-ted in the dense woods of Du-brava only 8 km from Šibenik. It is a location where visitors can familiarize themselves with the life of the falcon and other birds. Predatory birds have always fascinated man, and falconry is as old as are the oldest cultures on our planet. The beginning of fal-conry dates back to 5000 B.C in China where it spreads to Persia, the Middle East and to Europe . Falconry looses its popularity with the invention of the firearm. We are proud to continue this noble traditi-on, and to show our visitors the secrets of falconry.

Sibenik – a city within a cityTHE CORE OF THE OLD CITYBelow the fortress, on a stony

rise in the area between today's double city walls in Dolac and the cathedral, the first urban ha-bitat emerged. It is the 4th cen-tury Sibenik, mentioned in do-cuments of Croatian kings. The city area defined by the city wall perimeter in 14th century star-ted to grow in population densi-ty during the time of communal free development (1358-1409). In the 16th century constructi-on, led by Juraj Dalmatinac and the renaissance builder Nikola Firentinac, started to develop. Wood exploitation in the con-struction industry had been li-mited by statutory resolutions and more and more stone was being used. Beside the grand cathedral rose other churches, palaces, streets and town squa-res. In the 16th century Sibenik received a defined urbanism plan. From 1540 to 1650 the building of the three fortresses -

St Nikola, St Ivan and Šubićevac strengthened Sibenik’s fortifica-tion system. Under the Austrian government in 19th century a part of the city walls got torn down. However the wholeness of the old urban agglomeration has been preserved. It consists of three parts: Grad, Dolac and Go-rica. The historical town centre

can be accessed from all sides. The main entrance is the one from Poljan and it represents the central area of the total Si-benik agglomeration. The main city door stood on Poljana's so-uthwest side up to 1864. On the left side of the entrance there are the remains of the city walls with the sculpture of St Mihovil,

the city's patron. There is also a neo-renaissance theatre building opened for public form 1870. In this largest part of the city centre there are several areas of vari-ous sizes that reflect a peculiar unity of ambient values and li-ving areas. The palaces of local noblemen stand out in Sibenik's urban architecture. The central Town Square, the square of the Croatian Republic, former Plah-tea communis, has been the he-art of medieval Sibenik's public and social life. It’s planning and construction was finished in the 16th century. Some of the finest examples of Sibenik's architectu-re can be seen around the squa-re; the cathedral, the City Hall, the Little Loggia, Bishop's and City Prince's palaces as well as the stone palaces of influential citizens.

CENTRAL CITY SQUARECentral city square for a long

was called PLATHEI COMMU-NIS and later GOSPODSKI TRG (Gentleman’s Square). On that square, in 1750, Sibenik got its first café. For centuries this squ-are was the center of public and social medieval life, as well as the battlefield during Venetian army attacks in 1378. Located around the square are some of the most representative buildin-gs of Sibenik architecture: the cathedral, City Hall, Mala Lođa, Dukes and Bishops Palaces as well as a complex of patrician stone palaces. Also interesting in the old city core is the “Trg četiri bunara” (Square of the Four Wells) which was built in 1451. Since the city lacked in water during the Venetian ru-le, that same authority ordered the city’s duke to begin building a reservoir. That is how Sibenik got its reservoir “The Four We-lls” which has been supplying citizens with water for four and a half centuries.


The sea of Sibenik archipelago is one of the most interesting diving areas of the Adriatic sea. Kaprije is one of the many islands in the archi-pelago of Sibenik, 30 or 60 minutes by boat from the coast. Kaprije is the island without cars and roads. Kapri-je is naturally sheltered from all the winds, on its northeastern side. The port of Kaprije enables safe berthing to the numerous yachts and to the crews it offers relaxation and good local specialties. It is also known for

the numerous hidden coves around the island. Diving along a wall going steeply down to the depth of 20 me-ters, whereas the one in the closest vicinity goes down even to the depth of 45 meters. This beautiful wall, full of life, is definitely an unforgettable location. It is a position suitable for divers of all categories. Another inte-resting spot is wreck of Francesca de Rimini, which lies immediately off the northern coast of the island of Kaprije. The ship was sunk on March 22, 1944,

when two RAF Spitfires launched the-ir aerial torpedoes. This is a very well preserved WW2 iron ship, 42 m long, a beam of 12 m and with three masts, which, before the war, was owned by a Croatian shipping company. With the onset of war the vessel was com-mandeered by the Italians who use it to transport armaments. When Italy capitulated in 1943, the ship was ta-ken over by the Germans, who used for the same purpose right up until the day it was sunk by allied aircraft.

Diving in crystal clear seas

Kornati islandsThe sea of Sibenik archipelago is one

of the most interesting diving areas of the Adriatic sea. The submarine world of the Kornati islands, of the islands of Kaprije, Kakanj, Zirje, Sokol, Blitvenica attracts more and more divers every ye-ar. The Kornati area is virtually inexhau-stible in its variety of locations offering quite specific types of underwater relief: steep walls teeming with life, underwater caves, crevices and passages covering a large area of northern Dalmatia. Diving centers located on the mainland (Mur-ter, Vodice, Sibenik, Primosten) charge higher costs for accessing diving locati-ons, but their position ensures that they also attract a greater number of divers. This zone represents a true threshold to the Adriatic: the open sea from the sout-hwest cleanses the aquatorium so rich in fish, and the essential nature of the navi-gational routes dating from the times of Antiquity and the Middle Ages down to this day. There are numerous smaller ar-chaeological sites, cliffs and sunken reefs, caves and deep depressions concealing many still undiscovered wrecks. It is no wonder that new locations (wrecks) are being discovered from time to time, and the area is still mostly un-researched. The southern coast of the island of Zirje

is particularly interesting and attractive since it resembles other islands of the ou-ter belt - where one location ends anot-her begins, which makes diving in these waters a truly exciting experience. Kasela island with numerous spires, formed as a result of tectonic disturbances, raising from the sea bottom at the depth of 40 meters up to the surface. Diving amongst them is an unforgettable diving experien-ce equally for beginners and more expe-rienced divers. Samograd island with a beautiful wall full of purple and yellow gorgonians (cnidaria). The crystal clear sea, an intact submarine world of the na-tional park guarantees another exceptio-nal diving experience. Depth: from 15 to 60 meters. On the island of Rasip, from the outer side of the island there is a cliff wall dropping from 3 to 65 meters and covered with corals, sponges and around it are many schools of various fish. The sea is crystal clear, visibility is often over 40 meters. Location is suitable for be-ginners and experienced divers. Kornati is a national park under special protecti-on by the Ministry of Culture, and diving in those areas is allowed but only when accompanied by a diving guide from an authorized diving centre.
