Welcome to our beautiful city and to the seventh edition of the second season of “The Sibenik Times”. Arms are flailing, gestures are animated and tempera-tures seemed to be raised. This kind of “street theatre” can be seen in any place in the Sibenik County, but don’t worry the actors in this play are simply having a conversation. Croatians, being southern Europeans, have a tendency to speak not only with their mouths but also using their hands. At first glance this form of conversation may look unusual and maybe even unnerving. But don’t worry, the conversation is normally an everyday event like football or shopping. The street scenes actually reminded me of watching an Italian movie, it was like I had walked onto the set of a Fellini movie were people are always waving their hands around as if trying to swat a annoying mosquito. Whereas northern Europeans tend to speak without the use of their hands, southern Europeans use them in every opportunity to physi-cally describe the dialogue. And I must say, after living in Croatia for eleven years, this behaviour is catching. I’ve started to animate my own conversa-tions. And as the growth and popularity of mobile phones invaded Dubrovnik so the situation got more comical. People everywhere seemed to be mumbling to themselves while gesticulating wildly. At first I thought they were crazy but the closer I got I noticed that they were talking on their mobile phones. The whole situation made me laugh, two people talking to each other miles apart and gesticulating with their hands as if the other person was right in front of them. All those animated discussions are proof positive that Croatians express themselves with their hands even while speaking on the phone. And then mobile phones developed into hands-free and the situation became even more bizarre.

Croatia has started with a complete ban on smoking from Wednesday the 6th of May. Smoking at bars will only be allowed on terraces, while resta-urants would have the possibili-ty of allocating a separate room for smokers.

Also, the bill ban smoking on all work places. Smoking has

already been banned in health, social institutional and educati-on facilities. The new bill also introduces a special health war-ning on every pack of cigarettes. Health Minister Darko Milinovic said with the new law the gover-nment want to change people’s smoking habits and protect non-smokers.

US ambassador to Croatia Ro-bert Bradtke has said he wants to see the visa regime for Croa-tians travelling to America lifted. Bradtke said yesterday in an in-terview with 'Slobodna Dalma-cija' that relations between Cro-atia and the US were excellent but that more work needed to be done in strengthening economic ties between the two countries and making it easier for Croats' to visit the US. Bradtke said: "We have already introduced visas for ten year stays in the US for Croatian residents, but our goal to lift the visa requirement for Croats travelling to the US. But, we are aware that will take some time."

A retired Slovenian basketball star has opted for a Croatia travel experience this summer. Ivo Daneu, who is 71 years old, will spend time in the country over the weekend. The ex-sportsman has his own ship and will be checking out the delights offered by the Dalmatia islands. Commenting to the newspaper, Daneu revealed that he will spend three days cruising around the popular Croatia holiday destinations. It would appear that a num-ber of British vacationers have had a similar idea to the Slovenian this year because the Post Office reports that the kuna currency has been one of the fastest-growing foreign exchange markets in 2009. Head of travel services at the Post Office Sarah Munro said that the fact Croatia is not in the euro zone may be one of the reasons for its popularity among tourists. “Post Office sales show that (sales of the kuna are) up eight per cent on the same period last year,” she explained.

Croatian camp sites have re-ported a rise in visitor numbers. Figures from the Croatian cam-ping union show that between the Easter weekend starting 11 April and May Day holidays 4.2 per cent more people stayed in camps than in the same period last year. Union chiefs said pre-liminary figures showed 65,800

tourists made 240,000 overnight stays in the period. The biggest rises were seen at the 'Arenatu-rist' camp in Pula (57 per cent) and the ‘Park Soline' camp in the Dalmatia region. Adriano Pal-man, Croatian camping union head said: "Holidaymakers ha-ve begun to realise the quality of Croatian camps."

For Vodafone UK customers planning this year's holiday, Croatia could be the destinati-on of choice. Not only does the country offer the popular tourist areas of Dubrovnik and Dalma-tia, it now joins a list of nations that allow users of the telecoms firm to benefit from no roaming charges. This deal from the mo-bile phone company has been put in place for the summer and will be useful for all Vodafone-using foreign visitors heading on a vacation to Croatia in the coming months. Indeed, Voda-fone UK customers will not have to pay roaming fees when they

visit any country in Europe over the summer. Consumer director at Vodafone UK Ian Shepherd said: "The mobile phone market in the UK is incredibly competi-tive and if you are going to win customers the way to do that is to give them great value for mo-ney." He added that the company has launched a number of offers over the last few months for this very reason. "Over the last few months we've launched a series of offers for customers that are designed to do exactly that, and we hope that this will give our customers reason to stay with us and others reason to join us.

SIBENIK SCHOOLS OFFER SPECIAL PROGRAM

THE FIRST SOLAR-POWER PLANT WILL BE BUILT IN SIBENIK

The maritime school "Adriamare" in Sibenik is starting a new educational pro-gramme the aim of which is to teach sea-farers how to deal with pirates. Adriama-re head Nikolina Cigic said today (Weds) Croatian seafarers would be among the first in the world to learn about pirates and their tactics and aims. Cigic added students would also learn how to avoid their ambushes and how should one beha-ve if captured by pirates. The educational programme will also provide information about negotiating with pirates, the daily Slobodna Dalmacija has reported. Captain Gordan Baraka, one of Adriamare’s fo-unders, said: "At this moment, more than 20,000 Croatian sailors are on 5,000 to 6,000 ships around the world, and that is a huge number. All of them are potential

victims of pirates, who are becoming the global threat of the 21st century." In its educational programme, Adriamare will use the experience and knowledge of Isra-eli maritime companies, the ships of which pirates avoid because Israeli crews know how to deal with them. The programme has been set up according to the criteria of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Lecturers will be Croat seafarers, maritime inspectors, managers and capta-ins who have dealt with or been captured by pirates. The course will start in June. Adriamare was the first school to offer educational programmes for seafarers on safety on the sea 20 years ago, and it ho-sted a world conference on safety on the sea two years ago. The school is also pla-nning a world conference on piracy.

The first Croatian solar-power plant will be built in Promina municipality, northe-ast of Tribunj, in Sibenik-Knin county. The municipality’s urban plan reserves around 250 hectares of land for the power plant, the daily Jutarnji list has reported. If the local government agrees, the first solar-power plant will be build by the Zagreb Nexus investment fund. Nexus represen-tatives Miha Jager and Marko Mahek said today (Tues) the solar-power plant would have a capacity of 60 MW, 10 MW

more than the first and only European solar-power plant in Spain. The plant, construction of which will take two years and employ 300 workers, will cost aro-und 80 million Euros. Once finished, the plant will employ almost 100 workers, 80 per cent of whom will be specialists. The Nexus representatives added that Croatian technology and equipment would be used in construction of the plant. Jager and Ma-hek added Nexus wanted to build another solar-power plant near the town of Drnis.

Croatia plays host to a vital World Cup quali-fying match next month, when Ukraine are the visitors to the country on June 6th. A victory for the visitors could mean they leapfrog their hosts in the Group Six table, which is currently led by Fabio Capello’s England side. Ukrainians heading over for the match will be looking for apartments and other accommodation to stay in during their trip. Football fans may want to make the most of their vacation by heading down to the Adriatic coast after the game in Zagreb is over. Indeed, it was recently suggested that people who visit Cro-atia from Ukraine’s neighbouring nation Russia are “classy”. Croatia’s tourism minister Damir Bajs said: “Around 80 per cent of [Russians] who come to Croatia have a university education. “An avera-ge Russian tourist spends more than 100 euros a day while other tourists spend around 56 euros.”

Experts have called for intensive research into domestic energy sources after it was estimated an additional 60 million barrels of oil could be found in the Pannonian region of the country alone. Spe-aking at the 40th general meeting of the Scientific Council of Oil of the Croatian National Academy of Sciences yesterday (Thurs) oil expert Niko Dalic said the country had unused resources of oil and gas. He said in the Pannonian region alone a po-tential 60 billion barrels of oil could be extracted from 25 identified new potential sites. He added that there was also a potential 40 billion of cubic meters of gas in reserves under the Adriatic.


Around the county

Skradin

At the end of the estuary of Krka lies the town of Skradin, which was first mentioned back in Roman times. Later the town was famous for being the capital city of the Iliyrian tribe Liburna and was important in those times due to its strategic position. In 1304 the town was pronounced an autonomous city borough and after the middle ages, and after many military actions, it was the only town of 14 left on the river Krka. There are few towns in this area that have such a rich history as Skradin. Fifteen kilometers from the town is Bribir which has hidden secrets for the last six hundred years and due to this has been named the Croatian Troy. There lies a valuable archa-eological site with many artifacts from the roman ages and today draws many tourists from all aro-

und the world. Today Skradin is most famous as the place from which one enters towards the magical waterfalls of Krka from the sea. The natural beauty of these waterfalls is rare even on a world scale and it isn’t strange that the Krka area (46 kilome-ters long and covering a surface area of 111 kilometers squared) was announced a national park in 1985. There are 8 waterfalls and 10 lakes in the park but the most fascinating is the wealth of plants and animals. For example, there are more than 220 species of birds recorded, of which 80 actually nest and breed in the park, and in Krka you can find 10 endemic types of fish. On the island of Visovcu is situated the Franciscan monastery, which is located in out of the ordinary surroundings that apart protec-

ting the monks also guaranteed peaceful conditions in which they could work undisturbed. This can be seen today with the extraordinarily valuable books found in the monastery’s library. The natural beauty of the park is also magnificent at the top of the river although it is much harder to get to, so most of the guests to the park visit Roška waterfall. In the direct vicinity of Krka’s wa-terfalls lies the first hydro-power plant in this area, Jaruga, which was built in 1895 and in its time was the first hydro-power plant in the country and in fact in Eu-rope. On the waterfalls were bu-ilt a network of wooden bridges which all together link the pede-strian footpaths so that tourists can walk the whole area witho-ut interruption and return to the parking area where a recently re-

novated mill is situated. This mill used to be a very significant tool for the people of Skradin. Mo-dern Skradin was, until the con-struction of the new motorway, almost exclusively a magnet for nautical tourists. Not only due to its peace and beauty but also because of its marina which is located in the bay of Rokovača where perfect conditions for mo-oring and protection from winds can be found. Also, a significant number of “nautical nomads” leave their boats there over the winter months because the fre-sh river water doesn’t damage the hull of the boat as happens in marinas at sea. With the new connection to the motorway, which is just a few kilometers away, Skradin has received a new development influx which is built on old traditions. The fa-

mous wine cellars of the Bedric family, which had their debut at the Grand Prix wine fair in the French city of Toulouse back in 1932 and has in total, recorded a total of 200 years of tradition in the wine business. In fact as far back as the 13th century the city of Skradin had regulations for working the land in the area. In the following turbulent years the town of Skradin lost its title as a city, only to get it back again in 1997, and with the surroun-ding villages the population has reached 4,000 people. Skradin is well known for its fish specialties which are offered in many of the restaurants there today. It is also famous for its cultural events and the female vocal choir “Skradin-ke.” Visitors to the town certainly shouldn’t miss the Skradin festi-val of Dalmatian choirs.


On the top of the hill Broscici is situated the church of The Lady of Karavaja. The hilltop and church can be reached via two different routes. The first route is by three steps which led from the old section of the town and the other route starts at the county church and along this route a “pilgrim’s way” was constructed.

The history of the famous Lady of Karavaja began in the 17th century, when twenty Italian families moved to Tisno. One of the families, the Gelpi family, brought with them a wooden picture on which was painted an apparition of the Virgin Mary.

The apparition happened on the 26th of May 1432 nearby the town of Caravagia, and the sa-me town gave the name to the future Croatian saint. Every year on this date the day of the Lady of Karavaja is celebrated, at which tens of thousands of people from the region as well as from further around attend.

The painting originates from the middle of the sixteenth century, and is 137 centimetres wide and 170 centimetres in height. Today the very same painting hangs inside the Lady of Karavaja church adorned in gold and silver ornaments and decorations.

Devotion towards the Lady of Karavaja qu-ickly spread in the town of Tisno. The Gelpi family built a chapel on the hill, which over the years was added to and built up to form its present day shape and form.

Up until 1980 the holy place was under the ownership of the original family and then it was handed over to the city of Tisno. Numero-us pilgrimages, masses and faithful blessings have shown over the years how this holy place has become a special place of worship for the whole of Dalmatia.

Tada se grade obiteljske kuće Gelpi i Banchetti, kamene kuće s karakteristika-

ma dalmatinskog baroka, što mjestu daje izgled gradića.Za vrijeme francuske vladavine početkom 19. stoljeća, Tisno postaje općinsko središte i uz kraće prekide to ostaje do današnjih dana.Stanovništvo se oduvijek bavilo poljoprivredom i trgovinom, a od 1923. godine kada su stigli prvi turisti iz Češke, turizam postaje jedna od najznačajnijih grana privrede.

Gospe od Karavaja u Tisnome

Na brdašcu Brošćici nalazi se crkva Gospe Kara-vaja, do koje se može doći iz dva pravca.

Jedan put sa tristo stepenica vodi iz starog djela mjesta, a drugi put vodi od župne crkve i duž njega je izgrađen križni put sa postajama.

Povijest slavljenja Gospe Karavaja seže u 17. sto-ljeće, kada je među dvadesetak talijanskih obitelji, u Tisno doselila i obitelj Gelpi donijevši sa sobom drvenu sliku na kojoj je naslikano ukazanje majke božje Ivanici.

Ukazanje se dogodilo 26.05.1432. blizu gradića Caravagia , (na mjestu ukazanja nastalo je sveti-šte), po kojem je i nazvano naše svetište. Svake godine na taj se datum slavi dan Gospe Karavaja, kojom prilikom svetište posjećuju desetina tisuća ljudi iz šire i uže okolice.

Sama slika potječe iz sredine šesnaestog stolje-ća , široka je 137 cm, visoka 170 cm a njen gornji dio završava lukom, i danas se nalazi unutar crkve Gospe Karavaja, sva prekrivena zlatnim i srebre-nim zavjetnim nakitom.

Štovanje Gospe Karavaja se u Tisnomu brzo širilo pa je obitelj Gelpi na brdu najprije sagradila kapelu, koja se tokom godina dograđivala sve do današnjeg oblika.

Sve do 1980. godine svetište je bilo u obitelj-skom vlasništvu, a tada je predano župi Tisno.

Brojni zavjetni činovi i svjedočanstva o milosti-ma i ozdravljenjima pokazuju kako su ovo svetište oduvijek posjećuju vjernici čitave Dalmacije.

A BRIEF HISTORY

KRATKA POVJEST

Tisno was founded in 1548 when sur-viving citizens from the town of Ivinja fled from the Turkish army and settled on the island around a defensive fort built in 1475. The natural position of Tisno lent itself to the urban develop-ment of the town and immigrant Ital-ian families at the end of the 17th cen-tury and early 18th century gave the town an added impulse. It was then that the family houses of Gelpi and Banchetti were constructed; stone houses in the Dalmatian style gave the whole city a characteristic look. At the time of the French occupation at the beginning of the 19th century Tisno became a borough and with a short break remains one today.The citizens of the town and region have always worked in agriculture and trade and from 1923 the first tourists arrived in the city. These first tourists were from the Czech Republic and since those early days tourism has become one of the most significant branches in the city.


• How is the season going so far this year and what are your expectations?

Until now the tourist season this year is on the same level as last year and I have to be honest that we haven’t seen any bad affects from the global recessi-on. The overnight stays in our resort are mainly of the nautical variety and I belie-ve in that group of people that the global crisis hasn’t stopped them from taking an annual holiday. Murter doesn’t really have a large hotel capacity and as far as I know there isn’t a substantial drop in that area. As far as guests in private acco-mmodation we are still waiting to see the results. The information we’ve got from local tourist agencies, the number of reservations and enquires for the fu-ture are all satisfactory. We can say that Murter is expecting a successful tourist season.

• How has the Tourist Board of Mur-ter got involved in the action “Love Croatia”?

The action “Love Croatia” was foun-ded in 1997, but from 2001 the project has grown in strength. The project in-cludes an award program for preparing the surroundings the “Blue” and “Green”

flowers, as well as awards for staff mem-ber of the year and finally a program “Lo-ve Croatia” for children. The goals of the whole action are to motivate people to look after their surroundings and protect nature so that the whole country looks more beautiful, cleaner and more orga-nised with the slogan “More flowers, less rubbish.” Since our office has very go-od co-operations with the city company “Murtela” and the Borough of Murter – Kornati, we have used our joint powers to organise various actions.

• Have you organised any new events for guests to the resort this year?

New amenities and facilities for touri-sts are more of a question for private ini-tiative and private businesses. It’s up to the tourist office to motivate such ideas, both on a local and regional level. As far as larger projects are concerned, not only do they require larger investments, but also larger and wider conditions which makes such projects always harder to re-alise. Smaller investments are growing, even though we may not notice them, but they are just as important and signi-ficant to the tourist offer. Being born and having grown up in this beautiful, not

priznati da do sada nismo primjetili posljedice globalne recesije. Naša noćenja su uglavnom ona nautička, a vjerujem da je toj društveni sloj na koji se kriza ne odražava u smislu da bi se odrekli svojih godišnjih odmora. Hotelskih kapaciteta nemamo velikih, te ni u tom segmen-tu ne osjećamo pad, a goste koji odsjedaju u privatnom smjestaju jos očekujemo. No povodeći se informacijama lokalnih turističkih agencija, broj rezervacija i upita je također zadovoljavajući, tako da u Murteru očekujemo uspješnu turističku sezonu.

• Kako se TZ Murter uključila u akciju „Volim Hrvatsku“?Akcija «Volim Hrvatsku» pokrenuta je 1997., ali je od 2001.

snažno uznapredovala. Sadrži nagradne programe za uređenje okoliša 'Plavi' i 'Zeleni' cvijet te za djelatnika godine, ali i pro-gram Volim Hrvatsku za djecu. Cilj je cijele akcije poticati na očuvanje okoliša i zaštitu prirode da bi Hrvatska bila ljepša, cvjetna i uređena, a tomu služi i moto "Više cvijeća, manje smeća». Čitav sustav turističkih zajednica uključen je u ak-ciju, pa tako i TZO Murter – Kornati. Budući da imamo izvanrednu suradnju sa Komunalnim poduzećem «Murte-la» a i Općinom Murter – Kornati, zajedničkim snagama i sredstvima provodimo akcije uređenja i unaprijeđenja uvjeta boravka turista na našem području.

• Dali su organizirani novi događaji i razonoda za turiste?

Novi sadržaji i razonoda za turiste, stvar su, rekla bih privatne inicijative i privatnog poduzetništva. Na turističkoj zajednici je da potiče takvu inicijativu, a na lokalnoj i regionalnoj upravi, da joj stvara pre-duvjete. Što se tiče krupnijih projekata, zasigurno je da oni zahtijevaju ne samo veća ulaganja, već širi spektar preduvjeta, te je s takvim projektima uvi-jek malo teže. Oni manji se ipak rađaju i rastu, iako

only in ambience but also in tempera-ment, we sometimes forget how a con-versation with a fisherman or a character at the market can be interesting and also be in its own way a tourist attraction.

• How would you best describe Mur-ter to someone who has never been before?

Ha! Murter is indescribable! Just joking, firstly I must mention that the island is connected to the land, it has a surface area of 19 km², and that the borough of Murter-Kornati has over 160 islands, islets and reefs, with a coastline of over 400 kilometres. Due to the cul-tural and historical beauty tourism is an important branch which the borough of Murter – Kornati wishes to develop. In short I would say that Murter is firstly a special experience, with a marvellous ambient and temperament, in fact those words are not enough, you have to come to Murter to experience it for yourself.

• What local speciality would you re-commend tourists to try in Murter?

I would certainly recommend trying specialties which our ancestors created, and our gastronomy is still prepared to-day with pride and love in our restau-

rants. Firstly: Octopus salad, Maništrun (squid soup with a special type of pasta), Fish stew (Brudet) and for desert our lo-cal speciality “Pršunate” and of course all washed down with a good glass of wine.

Murter has taken specialties from the Mediterranean cuisine and Dalmatian cuisine, but to stand out and be special as it is, it has its own recipes and dishes. People from Murter are well known as being people who love life and everyt-hing beautiful, so this is continued in their cooking. On every plate you’ll find a grain of salt and a grain of soul.

• How can tourists spend “night life in Murter?

In Murter there isn’t any night clubs or discos, also there aren’t any kind of clubs that you’d expect to find in a larger urban area or modern resort. But, as I have already said the people of Murter love life, love fun and are recognised for their hospitality. If you’ve ever experien-ced the “night life” in Murter you’d know that it’s a very social, cultural, friendly and exciting time. As I’ve already men-tioned Murter is an experience, with a special ambient and a special tempera-ment.

Murter je posebno iskustvoih mi sami koji put i ne primjetimo, no oni su zasigurno jednako važan i bitan segment turističke ponude. Rodivši se i živeći u ovom prekrasnom, ne samo am-bijentu, nego i temperamentu, ponekad zaboravljamo kako i razgovor s ribarom ili staricom na tržnici može biti zanimljiv turistički doživljaj.

• Kako bi najbolje opisali Murter net-kome tko ga nikad nije posjetio?

Ha! Murter je neopisiv! Šalim se, Pa u svakom slučaju uvodno bih va-ljda morala reći da je to otok spojen s kopnom, površine cca 19 km2, te da je Opći-na Murter-Kornati s preko 160 otoka, otočića i hridi i obalnom crtom dugom gotovo 400 km, najveća je otočna općina na Sredoze-mlju. Zbog kulturno-povi-jesnih vrijednosti i prirodnih ljepota, turizam je svakako gospo-darska grana koja općini Murter-Kornati osigurava razvoj.

Ukratko..rekla bih da je Murter prije svega doživljaj.. poseban, vančulni doživ-ljaj ambijenta i svakako temperamenta… te su riječi nedovoljne i svakako se Murter mora doći i..osjetiti.

• Što bi preporučili turistima da jedu kao lokalni specijalitet?

Svakako preporučam jela koja su jeli

naši stari, a naši gastronomi ih s ponosom i ljubavlju pripravljaju u svojim restorani-ma. Recimo slijed: Salata od hobotnice, Maništrun (juha od lignje sa posebnom vrstom tjestenine), Brudet od «vražje matere» (Grdobina), a za desert naše murterske «Pršunate» (Fritule), i naravno čaša dobrog vina.

Murter ima specifičnosti Mediterana, Dalmacije.. no da bi bio poseban, a jest, ima svojih posebnosti u svemu, pa tako i

u jelu… Murterini su poznati kao ljudi koje vole život i sve što je

lijepo, pa se drže te devize i dok kuhaju.. U svakom ta-njuru naći ćete i zrno soli, i zrno duše..

• Kako turisti mogu pro-vesti noćni život?

U samom mjestu nema disco cluba, a ni sličnih klu-

bova tipičnih urbanim sredina-ma ili mondenim ljetovalištima.

Ali kao što rekoh, Murterini su ljudi koji vole život, vole zabavu, a nadasve i pre-poznatljivo gostoljubivi. Tko god je ikad bio u Murteru u «noćnom izlasku» zna da za Murter jezične, socijalne, kulturo-loške i ne razlike nikako nisu prepreka nezaboravnoj zabavi. Kao što rekoh, to su vančulni doživljaji. Cultural monuments

In the vicinity of today's Knin there was a town called Burnum which served as an Illyrian and Roman military camp in the 1st century BC. Knin is mentioned in the 10th century in the history of Constantine Porphyrogenitus as the centre of a parish. A Cro-atian diocese was founded 1040 and its jurisdiction extended to the Drava river, with the "Cro-atian bishop" at its head. Knin was also the capital of the King-dom of Croatia around 1080 during the rule of King Dmitar Zvonimir. This heritage has led to Knin sometimes being known as the city of Croatian kings or Zvonimir's city (Zvonimirov grad). Between the 10th and the 13th century, Knin was a nota-

ble military fort. The huge 10th century medieval fortress on Mt. Spas dominates the centre of town, and its present aspect dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. It is one of the largest fortification buildings in Dalmatia and is divided into the upper, medium and lower town, connected by drawbridges. The city was also home to the Sino-badi, a well know Serbian family who fought against the Ottoman Turks' advances. Jovan Vitez Si-nobad was well known fighter and had a number of victories against the Turks and was ki-lled by the Turks in 1715 near Glamoč. He was buried at the St.George's (Sv. Djordja) church at Sinobadova hill. Its strategic

position played an important role in many wars and power changes — beginning with the Croatian rulers, then Kingdom of Hungary, the Venetians, Tur-

ks, to the Austrians and the French. On May 29, 1522, the fort of Knin fell to the Ottoman Empire, and Croatian folk massi-vely left the town.

KNIN – A HISTORIC CITY


Sibenik began using its heraldic seal with the image of Sibenik’s Pa-tron St Michael, together with ot-her Dalmatian cities. The image of St Michael can also be found on the Sibenik municipality seal, as it was customary that the image or motive on the coat of arms is used on the seal as well.

Although the town's coat of arms from the time of it’s the earliest use has not been preserved, there is a document with the town district se-al on it that can serve as evidence of the appearance district's coat of arms. The seal is found on a letter (dated the 18th of October 1255) from the Sibenik district and dio-cese to the Prenestine bishop ple-ading to him to argue in favour of the founding of a Sibenik diocese with the Pope. The portrayal of St Michael on the coat of arms, as the invincible and the strongest of all angles, symbolizes the fighting spirit and strength of the medieval Sibenik. It served as a warning to the town’s enemies that the citizens will follow the example of their pa-tron in the protection of their rights and are prepared at any time to de-

fend their homeland and city. When carving the coat of arms in stone, Sibenik citizens used to place it on visible and prominent spots trying to demonstrate their communal au-tonomy, which needed to be reaffir-med and defended in the turbulent middle ages. Many of these coats of arms can be seen around the Old City of Sibenik today, especially if you observe older buildings or sa-cral buildings.

in Croatian language dates from 1878 when town district came to hands of the people. The seal is bordered with the sign: "Obćinsko opraviteljstvo Šibensko" which to-day roughly translates as: "Sibenik - township". The town's coat of arms with St Michael’s image had been used until 1926 when the Ministry of Police banned the use of all dis-trict and regional coats of arms and seals not only in Sibenik but across the whole of Croatia. From the end of 1939, when the ban was lifted, it has reaffirmed its usage and is now utilized on all city documents.

Another alternative to using your mobile phone in Croatia are international phone cards, they can be purchased in post offices and many shops. Pre-pa-id phone cards sometime know as "calling cards" are purcha-sed in denominations, such as 50 kuna, 100 kuna, 200 kuna and they may be available in other currencies such as ster-ling (GBP) or Euros. When you purchase these cards, the card is pre-charged with a value of call credit which is usually the same as that of the card value. Callers can then use the card to call from almost any touch tone telephone to call either domestic (local) or International num-bers. Because cards are pre-paid, phone card producers are able to purchase 'minutes' in bulk from line carriers such as MCI, Worl-dCom, Deutche Telecom, BT, etc. Purchasing in bulk means savings, and these savings are passed onto the phone card user. Typically, on international calls, callers can save over 80% over a standard dialling service, and in some cases over 90%, thus ma-king phone cards a very attrac-tive method for calling abroad.

Picigin is an amateur sport game played on some beaches in Dalmatia. It's played with a ball. In Sibenik, it's very popular and it is played by people of all ages and both sexes. The game involves several players in a circle pa-ssing around a small ball and keeping it in the air and out of the water for as long as possible. As such, the game somewhat resembles volleyball but it is played with a much smaller ball, the size of a tennis ball. There are usually

five players and much running and di-ving in the shallow water. Picigin is a non-competitive sport: there are no op-posing sides, no points, neither winners nor losers. It's a relaxing game where players start slowly and speed up when they want to. In the heat of the game, players are forced to run fast through the water and make acrobatic mane-uvers to keep the ball in play. Players don't catch the ball they bounce it aro-und with the palm of the hand.

Raslina was mentioned in 1463 under the name of Prukljan (villa Proclan) after the bay it lies in, 14 Km. from Sibenik. It was mentioned as Kastel (Castle) Ra-slina in 1515, when it had strong walls and towers. Old Kastel Raslina was under the Turks until 1576 and was completely destroyed. The very old Chapel of St. Mi-chael is mentioned in 1457, although it was built much earlier. Not far from Ra-

slina the walls of the submerged castle can be seen in the water. There are still many legends about it, and it is popularly known as Gavanovi dvori. When the tide goes down it is possible to walk for more than a kilometer along the stone wall of the submerged castle and reach the islet of Stipanac. On it are the remains of the small Church of St. Stephen mentioned in 1322.

The Sibenik area is famous for its tra-dition of wine production. It history dates from the period before the birth of Christ when vine yards were worked by the ancient Greeks and Romans. From the middle of the 15th century to the 20th century Sibenik became well known in Europe for its wine culture. In the 1930’s

sparkling wines from Sibenik were extre-mely popular in Paris and the Vatican. The most well known grapes from the Sibenik region are Babić, Debit, Plavina, Lasin and Maraština. The most popular spirits (rakija) which are served as an appetiser before meals are travarica and loza.

Dražen Petrović (October 22, 1964 – June 7, 1993) was a Croatian basketball player, born in Sibenik. He is considered the crucial part of the vanguard to the present-day mass influx of European players into the NBA. He set new stan-dards for the game across borders, first in Spain for Real Madrid and later with the Portland Trailblazers and New Jersey Nets of the NBA. Fans stood up to take notice of the mighty "Petro".
