A total o 653,555 tourists visitedCroatian national parks in the rstsix months o 2008. According to the

Central Bureau o Statistics, 484,907were oreign tourists and 168,648domestic. The most visited park wasPlitvicka jezera (Plitvica lakes) in the

county o Lika-Senj, with more than286,000 visitors. Some 85 per cento these were oreigners. The next

most popular national park was Krk with 198,000 sightseers, ollowedby Brijuni, Paklenica, Mljet, Korna-ti, Risnjak and North Velebit. Plitvi-

ce lakes national park is one o thegreatest natural wonders in Europeand is listed in UNESCO’s Register

o World Natural Heritage. Plitvicelakes are a group o 16 small lakesinterconnected with a myriad o wateralls.

NUDIST FRIENDLYBEACHESCroatia is emerging as a top destination or ‘naked’ tou-rism with the countries nudist beaches attracting inter-national attention. Tourists looking to strip o on holidayshould head to Valalta in Istria which has one o the bestnudist beaches in Europe, according to an online pollster.

American nancial magazine ‘Forbes’has announced the launch o theirBalkan edition in November. The Cro-atian language edition will cover themarkets o Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and

Herzegovina and Montenegro. Theplanned circulation target is 24,000copies initially, news website Indexhas reported. The edition will be bro-ught out in cooperation with Croati-

an publishing company Europa PressHolding. The editors, based in Zagreb,will model the content on its Ameri-can counterpart, but will be ree tomanage material relevant to the Ea-stern European markets.

RECORD NUMBEROF IMPORTSAccording to the Central Bureau o Statistics, in the rstsix months o 2008 Croatia imported agricultural andoodstus worth 1.3 billion US dollars. At the same timeexports o those same products amounted to just 629 mi-llion US dollars. Compared with the same period last year,the value o imported agricultural and ood products in-creased by 36 per cent in the rst six months o 2008, whi-le exports increased by 17 per cent. In the rst hal o the2008, Croatia imported 27,000 tons o meat products tothe value o more than 80 million US dollars. Croatia alsoimported 77 000 tons o vegetables and 38,000 tons o ruit and vegetables. The country’s major export destina-tions are Bosnia and Herzegovina, ollowed by Slovenia,Italy and Serbia, while Croatia imported most o its oodrom Italy, Germany, Brazil and Hungary.

ATTRACTIVEFOR INVESTORSInvestors are set to continue being attracted to Croatiadue to Exchange Traded Funds (ETF), it is claimed. Accor-ding Jakov Kozina, portolio manager at nancial servicesgroup Fima, the country will gain more assets rom ETFsas its capital market becomes “more transparent”, reportsemportal.co.yu. He suggests this should help reverse thetrend o oreign buyers looking to other countries ornewer, riskier markets in the hope o generating higheryields. FOR EMERGENCYReplacing an older system involving separate call centresand multiple numbers, Croatia now has a single numberto call when quick help is needed. In an emergency, aphone call can mean lie or death, and the last thing youwant is to have to umble or the right number. In the past,Croats had to memorise three separate numbers -- 92 orpolice, 93 or the re brigade and 94 or medical personnel-- and it was easy to conuse them. But the situation haschanged. CENTRALCITY SQUARECentral city square or a long

time, the central city squarewas called PLATHEI COMMU-NIS and later GOSPODSKI TRG(Gentleman’s Square). On thatsquare, in 1750, Sibenik got itsrst caé. For centuries this squ-are was the center o public andsocial medieval lie, as well asthe battleeld during Venetianarmy attacks in 1378. Locatedaround the square are some o the most representative buil-dings o Sibenik architecture:the cathedral, City Hall, MalaLođa, Dukes and Bishops Pala-ces as well as a complex o pa-trician stone palaces. Also inte-

resting in the old city core is the“Trg četiri bunara” (Square o the Four Wells) which wasbuilt in 1451. Since thecity lackedin wa-

ter during the Venetian rule,that same authority ordered thecity’s duke to begin building areservoir. That is how Sibenik

got its reservoir “The Four Wells”which has been supplying citi-zens with water or our and ahal centuries.

THE BISHOPSPALACEThe Bishops Palace (1439-1441)leans up against the St. JamesCathedral on the sea side. TheBishops Palace is a Gothic-Re-naissance structure rom thesecond hal o the 15th century.Ater a number o interventions,the original look which can be

on the acade and in the co-urtyard (parts o the arcades,portals, triorium with stonesculpture) was lost. Next to the

palace is the old preserved Se-agate, which is an entrance tothe city rom the shore.

THE CORE OFTHE OLD CITYBelow the ortress, on a stonyrise in the area between today’sdouble city walls in Dolac andthe cathedral, the rst urbanhabitat emerged. It is the IX cen-tury Sibenik, mentioned in do-cuments o Croatian kings. Thecity area dened by the city wallperimeter in XIV century startedto grow in population density

during the time o communalree development (1358-

1409). In the XVIcentury con-struction, led

by Juraj

Dalmatinac and the renaissancebuilder Nikola Firentinac, star-ted to develop. Wood exploitati-on in the construction industry

had been limited by statutoryresolutions and more and morestone was being used. Besidethe grand cathedral rose otherchurches, palaces, streets andtown squares. In the XVI cen-tury Sibenik received a denedurbanism plan. From 1540 to1650 the building o the threeortresses - St Nikola, St Ivanand Šubićevac strengthenedSibenik ortication system.The Baroque (XVII and XVIII)did not signicantly infuencethe city structure, though it didleave traces in sacral and otherbuildings. Under the Austrian

government in XIX ct a part o the city walls got torn down.However the wholeness o theold urban agglomeration hasbeen preserved. It consists o three parts: Grad, Dolac and Go-rica. The historical town centrecan be accessed rom all sides.

sents the centralarea o the

total Sibenik agglomeration.The main city door stood onPoljana’s southwest side up to1864. On the let side o the en-

trance there are the remains o the city walls with the sculptureo St Mihovil, the city’s patronThere is also a neorenaissancetheatre building opened orpublic orm 1870. In this largestpart o the city centre there areseveral areas o various sizesthat refect a peculiar unity o ambient values and living areas( Trg Ivana Pavla II, Dobric, Squa-re o the Croatian Republic etc.).The palaces o local noblemen0stand out in Sibenik’s urbanarchitecture. The central TownSquare, the square o the Cro-atian Republic , ormer Plahtea

Knin is a historical townin the Šibenik-Knin co-unty o Croatia, locatednear the source o the

ring this period we get a lot o school excursions rom all overCroatia. In July and August ourguests change and we tend toattract tourists who are staying

on the coast. The ort above thecity is an interesting day trip orthem and this year I am pleasedwith the amount o visitors. Andnot orgetting we also have gu-ests who come to Knin or theshing. Then in September andOctober we once again get theteam building guests. Lastly wereceive guests mainly rom Italybut also rom Sweden who tendto come or hunting. These gue-sts are great or the city as theynormally stay or a longer peri-

od o time. I can honestly saythat apart rom February andMarch the tourist seasonlast all year round.What a th plas oth t?There are many plans andideas or the uture but just to mention a ew.The rst is to clear andprepare a walking paththat once ollowed thebank o the river Krk.

Over time the path has becomeovergrown and unusable. It’sa lovely walk and leads all theway down to the Krk wateralls.We are currently in talks with

the Croatian Water Board aboutthem clearing the path whilstwe will install signs and guides.Then there is a cave near thecity which is interesting. This isan extraordinary and attractivearchaeological, speleologicaland natural phenomenon. Thenthere is a joint project that wewill enter into about connectingthe ort with the city as well aspreparing some old parks in thecity.How a yo pomotig Ki?Firstly we have a web site whichat the very beginning I wantedto look like a tourist site ratherthan a business site and we havehad some good eedback romthat. CATHEDRAL OF ST. JACOBThe Cathedral o St. Jacob in Sibenik, Croatia is a cathedral church o the CatholicChurch in Croatia, the see o Sibenik bishopric. The Cathedral has been on the

UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. The building o the church was initiated in1402, though plans on its construction had already begun in 1298, when Sibenik became a municipality. The actual work to transorm the older church began in1431. A multitude o Venetian and local cratsmen worked on it, in Gothic style. In1441, the Grand City Council entrusted the work to the master Giorgio Orsini. Heenlarged the cathedral with a side nave and apses, prepared it or the dome andadded various sculptural decorations, including 71 small human heads on the ou-ter sides and a baptistery, all in stone. Giorgio Orsini worked on the cathedral up tohis death in 1475. Between 1475 and 1505 the work was overseen by Tuscan ma-ster Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino. He continued the building in the Renaissancestyle, completing the dome, the outer sculptures o St. Michael, St. James (Jacob)and St. Mark, the roo and the upper açade. He also built the triorias and workedon the presbytery and sanctuary. Ater Fiorentino died in 1505, the constructionwas nally completed in 1536 by two other cratsmen, Bartolmeo o Mestra andhis son Jacob, completely ollowing Nicholas’ instructions.

RASLINARaslina was mentionedin 1463 under the nameo Prukljan ater the bayit lies in, 14 Km. rom Si-

benik. It was mentionedas Kastel Raslina in 1515,when it had strong wallsand towers. Old KastelRaslina was under theTurks until 1576 and wascompletely destroyed.The very old Chapel o St. Michael is mentionedin 1457, although it wasbuilt much earlier. Not arrom Raslina the walls o the submerged castle canbe seen in the water. The-re are still many legendsabout it, and it is popu-larly known as Gavanovidvori. When the tide goesdown it is possible to walk or more than a kilometeralong the stone wall o the submerged castle andreach the islet o Stipa-nac. On it are the remainso the small Church o St.Stephen mentioned alre-ady in 1322.

Visiani Robert (1800 - 1878) was bornin Sibenik on the street that now holds

his name. He was a well known naturalscience and a botanical proessor who

established the rst botanical garden inEurope at the University o Padova. His

most amous scientic work is the “FloraDalmatia”.

One o the most signicant archeologicalsites in Croatian is located 17 kilometersrom Sibenik, in the village o Danilo Gor-nje. A complex o Roman villas is locatedin the position o Šematorij, ound on thesite o Gradina were remains o buildings

and ortication system dating rom theprehistoric era to the middle ages. The siteon Bitinje answered many questions re-garding Neolithic’s in Dalmatia. The entireNeolithic’s cultural circle was named theDanilo Culture.

Primosten is a small town and harbour on a small

peninsula between the coves o Raduca and Pri-mosten, 30 km southeast o Sibenik. Economy isbased on arming, growing o vines and olives,shing and tourism. Primosten is protected romthe northerly winds and has a very mild climate.The coves o Vela and Mala Raduca, Primostenand Peles eature large beaches.

BETINAThanks to its location and

well- kept architecture, Betinais considered to be one o themost beautiul places in theAdriatic. The central historicalpart o Betina was built on theeastern slopes o Cape Artić,located on the northern gateto the Murter passage. Overtime the settlement has spre-ad to the Zdrače bay wherenowadays a marina and shi-pyard “Betina”, as well as thelocal beach, are situated. Thereare nearly 100 small amily shi-pyards in Betina, where skilledshipbuilders use hand tools tobuild strong and lasting tradi-

tional wooden boats.

BOAT SHOWNautical Center Prgin rom Šibenik has initiated a newproject, a nautical air called Adriatic Boat Show whichwill be held or the rst time rom 15th to 19th Octoberthis year. The project has been planned as a combination

o a business air and a public show with the emphasison the promotion o Croatian small boatbuilding and thepromotion o used vessels. Exactly these two acts makethis air unique and the rst one o that kind in Croatiaand wider region.

You might be surprised by the act thatsponges are not plants but animals thatbelong to the rst multi-cellular creatu-

res on Earth. Even though there are over5000 dierent species o sponges, onlysome 15 o them can be commerciallyused. Sponges can mostly be ound inwarm waters and can regenerate i pro-perly cut o, meaning that where onesponge used to be another one willtake its place. Sponges live o o plan-kton in warm, calm and clear waters,on rough and rocky seabed up to thedepth o 200 m. It takes 2 to 4 years orsponges to grow approximately 15 cm

in diameter. Sponges obtain planktonby ltering sea water and an averagesponge can lter almost 2000 liters o

sea water per day. In the Adriatic, the-re is an excellent rounded species o sponge, the so-called Dalmata Fina,that can grow up to 40 cm in diameter.It has considerable market value due toits ne structure. Besides Dalmata Fina,there is also one more type o spongein the Adriatic, Elephant’s Ear Sponge,known or its unusual orm and tre-mendous tenacity. Even though it cangrow up to 1 m in diameter, it is not asvalued as Dalmata Fina.

The bottlenose can measure between

1.9m to 4m when adult and weighsanything rom 100kg to 500kg. In Cro-atia, the population is o the coastaleco-type, with a maximum adult size o around 3m. Bottlenose dolphins can re-main submerged or 4 - 5 minutes ora-ging or sh. The longest time recordedin Croatia is 6 minutes and 55 seconds.Bottlenose dolphins eed on sh, smallsquid and crustacea, and are oten o-und in direct competition with sher-men. They are amous or their curiosityand this makes them prone to entan-glement, particularly in gillnets. This isa major orm o premature death in thisspecies o dolphin. Bottlenose dolphins

inhabit almost all oceans and seas thro-

ughout the world. However there is nocurrent worldwide estimation o popu-lation, although in the Mediterraneancurrent numbers are estimated to beewer than 10,000 individuals. Polluti-on, over shing and habitat destructi-on is not only reducing the numbers o these dolphins but restricting the avai-lable habitats or them to live.

DALMATIAN BLACK PINE

The Dalmatian Black Pine Pinus nigra(generally called Black Pine in Eu-rope), is a variable species o pine,

occurring across southern Europe rom

Spain to the Crimea, and also in Asia Mi-nor, Cyprus, and locally in the Atlas Mo-untains o northwest Arica. It is ound atelevations ranging rom sea level to 2,000m, most commonly from 250–1,600 m.These trees are relatively common in Croa-tia especially in the Sibenik – Knin County.

It is a large tree, growing to 20–55 m tall atmaturity. The bark is grey to yellow-brown,and is widely split by faking ssures intoscaly plates, becoming increasingly ssu-red with age. The leaves (“needles”) are infascicles of two, dark green, and 8–20 cm

long. The ovulate and pollen cones appearrom May to June. The mature seed conesare 5–10 cm long, with rounded scales;they ripen rom green to pale yellow-bu-
