PRESUME that there

will be much saidin the present issue of the magazine aboutthe recent Convention. Judging from the letters received fromthose who could notattend the Convention,everything that will

be written about it will be gladly received and carefully read.

If I were asked what I believed to bethe most outstanding event of the entire

Convention, aside from the reading andadoption of certain documents and resolutions, I would say that it was the evening of Monday, July 28, when nearlyseventy-five delegates and visiting members were made honorary members of the Supreme Lodge in a special Egyptian initiation ceremony, followed bytwo hours of mystical demonstrations,participated in by every brother and sister of the organization who was withinthe confines of the city of San Jose.

 To see many hundreds of students of our work assembled in the Temple afterthe initiation ceremony had been performed, and witnessing demonstrationsof all of the fundamental principles contained in our teachings, was an inspiringand uplifting occasion. In the afternoon these same hundreds of membershad witnessed a demonstration of manyof Nature’s chemical and physical lawsthrough a scientific exhibition conductedby our good Brother, Professor ArthurA. Roberts. But in the evening thedemonstrations were restricted exclu

sively to mental and psychic laws and

principles seldom demonstrated in anyplace but a Rosicrucian Temple orlaboratory.

 The old proverb that “seeing is believing is not sound and true, for our eyesmay occasionally deceive us, and if itwere not for the fact that we had five different objective faculties by which totest the impression coming to our senseswe might often be grossly deceived byone of them.

When it is possible to have suchdemonstrations that give concrete and

positive evidence to our five senses thereis little probability of any deception of any kind.

 You have heard it said probably thatall references to the Oriental’s abilityto perform the feat of levitation are basedupon illusion or self-deception. Thesame is said about any other remarkablefeat performed by the people of theOrient at various times in the past, andby the Masters of Tibet or the GreatWhite Brotherhood. But you shouldnow talk to those who were present onthis particular evening of the Convention when the Egyptian Temple was sohighly magnetised that its vibrationswere keenly felt by every sense, andthey will tell you that in the marvelousmystical area of that Temple there weremore remarkable demonstrations of ourpsychic principles than have ever occurred in a few hours in any part of this country in the past. They will tellyou that levitation of the physical bodywhereby it will rise from the floor andmove in space and become luminous is

not only theory but an actual fact. Theywill tell you that in addition to thepsychic body visibly leaving the physicalbody and moving to vari ous parts of the

room, the physical body itself with allits gross weight and form actually leftthe floor and moved into space. Theywill tell you of lights and illuminatedfaces that appeared in various parts of the room close to them. They will tellyou of demonstrations of the control of the heart and pulsati on of the blood in  their bodies, the mental direction of physical effects in their bodies whilethey were seated in their places in the

 Temple, of many, many, other manifestations which came to them by sight,by hearing, by feeling, and by all of the

senses combined.Demonstrations of healing and of the

healing principles had been given in person to the various visitors and delegates through the week and in assembly in the Temple collectively, but thesehigher demonstrations of the most mystical of our principles left no doubt inthe minds of the members assembled inthe Temple regarding the truthfulnessof every principle presented in our teachings. As the members left the Temple

on this momentous occasion there weretears in their eyes and great joy andenthusiasm in their hearts. Each onevoluntar i l y acclaimed that it was an  

evening of such benefit and profit thatif no other session of the Convention hadbeen held the journey to this city wouldhave been well repaid.

 To us who are the executives anddirectors of this work there comes thegreat joy and satisfaction in knowingthat our principles and the laws weteach are demonstrable and that we donot have to depend upon faith and blindbelief to hold our members in close devotion to this great work. Hundreds of the members who were pr esent will nowbe able to demonstrate more perfectlyand completely the principles they havebeen studying, and through their demonstrations in many communitiesthroughout the land the proof of ourprinciples will become established andthe Rosicrucian teachings laid down astruths which are practical, useful, andtruly demonstrable. This has always been a power of the organizationand through it the organization will continue to grow and become a power inthe lives of men and women.

Our National ConventionA BRIEF SUMMARY OF THIS WONDERFUL EVENT

 T was far more wonderful than we anticipated.

 This annual Convention,held in San Jose from

 July 23rd to July 30th,was intended to be aConvention of the NorthAmerican delegates andmembers, but long be

fore thefirst session was opened onWednesdayevening, July 23rd, wefound that it was going to be truly international, for delegates began to arrive from foreign lands a week beforewe anticipated the arrival of any members. What a glorious time it was forall of us! Nothing like it has been held

by the Rosicrucian Order in Americasince the first Rosicrucians came to the  shores of this continent in 1694.

 Just think of it, brothers and sisters, adelegate came from the far-off land of Nigeria, on the west coast of Africa, torepresent his race and his people at thisConvention. There has always been aRosicrucian jurisdiction on the westcoast of Africa, dating so far back intoancient history that it is difficult to tracewhen the first Rosicrucians establishedthe work there, and so we were delighted to have this delegate make this

long trip just to bring representation tothis Convention. Then, there was onefrom Switzerland, representing thatcountry, another from Australia, and another from New Zealand, another representing France, Germany, England,and other places in the world. In fact,

 Rosicru cian before e Convention ended, we had jy the twenty-six active jurisdictions of the

, Rosicrucian Order throughout the world,September  representing the entire International1930  Rosicrucian Council of the World, par

ticipating in this International Convention.

If any one who doubted the existenceof enthusiastic activity of the Order in all

parts of the world could have been present at these sessions, he would have seenhow widespread the activities were andhow very anxious each jurisdiction wasto participate in this Convention andbring its greetings and messages of good will, fellowship, and cooperation.

And, what an assembly of enthusiastic members it was! Every room, everyoffice, and every part of the severalbuildings at Headquarters were jammedwith visiting members and delegates.

 The streets adjoining the buildings were

lined with automobiles from early in themorning until late at night. Memberswearing the orange colored ribbon,showing that they were an attendant atthe Convention, were seen on all thestreets of this city and in all of the hotellobbies, and wherever one happened togo, there was sure to be some othermember for a companion in sightseeing, or in the discussions, interviews,and other incidents of the Convention.

 The first session was opened by theSupreme Secretary, who announced thepurposes of the Convention, and then

introduced the Imperator, who outlinedthe several important problems that wereto be voted upon by all delegates, andthen called upon the delegates from allparts of the world to express their official greetings, which they carried withthem from the Grand Masters of their

 jurisdictions, and from the representatives in the International Council. TheConvention assembled in the Supreme

 Temple was most colorful and the vibrations intense, and the spirit of fellow-

ship and enthusiasm expressed itself every moment in applause and wonderful sentiments.

 The second session was held on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock andwas in the nature of a discussion of theserious problem that confronts theAmerican people today in the form of clandestine or unauthorized “Rosicrucian'' literature, books, and propaganda, conducted by unauthorized leaders of pseudo Rosicrucian movements.One by one, the various delegates explained how seekers for truth in theirlocalities and districts were misled bybooks bearing Rosicrucian titles andwhich contained superstitious teachings,false practices, misleading statements,and often obnoxious principles. The sad

effect of this sort of literature in causingnewspaper editors, research workers,and the public generally to have a misconception of the true Rosicrucianideals was pointed out with many illustrations and examples, and finally a motion was made from the floor of theConvention which was seconded andabsolutely unanimously approved by avote of every member present. The motion was as follows:

"Resolved, That this Convention, expressing the sentiment of every jurisdiction of the true Rosicrucian Order of 

the World, goes on record as approvingof any plan that might be carried outby the various committees in every

 jurisdiction tending to prevent the useof the word “Rosicrucian” in any manner whatsoever by any organization notsponsored by the International Rosicrucian Council, or the use of theRosicrucian emblem by any individualor group of individuals without authority of the International Council, or thepretense to teach Rosicrucian principleswithout the endorsement and support of the said Council, and that legal steps betaken in each jurisdiction to prevent thepresent obnoxious misuse of the Rosicrucian name and symbol or any simulation of them.”

During the discussion of this resolution, documents were referred to whichclearly disproved the right or authorityfor these pseudo organizations to claimany Rosicrucian privileges, and representatives of foreign jurisdictions pointed out the fact that none of the pretend

ing bodies, which claimed to have authority of certain foreign jurisdictions,had any authority at all, and were notrecognized in their lands.

During the afternoon sessionsthroughout the Convention, various offi

cers of the Staff made long and interesting speeches of a practical, helpfulnature, and an open forum was established during which the members anddelegates asked questions regarding thework and principles, and received longand detailed explanations. During theevening sessions important addresseswere made by members of the WelfareStaff, by the Imperator, and other officers, dealing with new points to be introduced in our teachings and practicalapplications of the principles.

During the morning hours, and in between the sessions and on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, the members en

 joyed visits to various parts of the SantaClara Valley in automobiles and participated in a picnic in the beautiful AlumRock Park, situated in the foothills of the mountain range.

On Saturday evening, July 26th, themembers assembled in the large hall of the Chamber of Commerce in the heartof the city, and there witnessed the moving pictures taken on the last trip toPalestine and Egypt, while the Impera

tor lectured throughout the entire fivehours of the showing of the picture, describing in detail all of the beautiful andmystic sights and incidents of that trip.On Monday evening, July 28th, aspecial ceremony was held in the Supreme Lodge, at which time over sixtymembers were given the special initiation, which made them honorary members of the Supreme Lodge. Each yearthis initiation is held for those who havemade voluntary contributions to the

 Temple Building Fund for the erectionof more buildings, or the improvement

of the grounds surrounding the Temple,for the purchase of ornaments or antique objects for the Museum. The ceremony was one of the ancient Egyptianrituals in which the Supreme Officerswere robed in Egyptian costumes and,under the direction of the Imperator, theceremony introduced all of the ancientmystical principles. At the close of thisinitiation all members and visitors to theConvention entered the Temple and for

over an hour the Imperator conductedanother mystical ceremony in whichdemonstrations were made of the highestmetaphysical and mystical principlestaught in the Organization. With the Temple bathed in moonlight and the

officers in their Egyptian robes withstrange mystical music and incense accompanying the chanting and invocations, the members again enjoyed one of those rarest of mystical communionsparticipated in only once a year in theSupreme Lodge. As in the case of lastyear's Convention, every member acclaimed this one night as amply repayingthem for their long journey to California. In the afternoon, scientific demonstrations had been made, and all in all,this day of the Convention was an outstanding one.

 Tuesday afternoon was devoted toamendments and additions to our N ational Constitution, and methods of formal procedure, and on Tuesday night,the great banquet was held in one of the large hotels of the city, taxing thehotel to its capacity in this regard. Onthis occasion, short addresses were madeby the representatives of the city government, and Chamber of Commerce of San Jose, greeting the members of theOrder and expressing their joy in having the Rosicrucians visit the city.

A beautiful feature of the eveningwas operatic selections sung by Mme.Beatrice Bowman, the former coloraturasoprano of the Metropolitan OperaHouse, accompanied by other well-known artists who are members of theOrganization. This banquet, given bythe Supreme Lodge as a token to themembers and delegates, was greatly appreciated.

Wednesday afternoon and eveningwere devoted to the examination of thedocuments presented by the foreign delegates and reports of the various foreignconventions, and the outlining of planswhereby the North American jurisdiction of our Order can more completelycooperate with the various foreign jurisdictions.

copy before leaving San Jose. Themembers were astonished at the sizeand completeness of this largest printing plant on the Pacific Coast betweenthe cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, and at the many unique features

maintained in the rapid production of our magazines and books. The members also appreciated a dis

cussion in the Temple of the marvels of liquid air given by Brother Roberts, whofirst introduced these demonstrations inthe universities and colleges of Americamany years ago, and who is one of thefield lecturers of the Organization.

All in all, the hundreds of delegatesand visitors who spent two weeks or morein San Jose, arriving many days beforethe Convention and staying a numberof days after it ended, claimed that theyhad the most wonderful vacation of their lives and the most interesting, instructive, and profitable period of contact with our Organization they haveever had. Even those who journeyedfrom Australia and the west coast of Africa, New Zealand, India, France,and other lands, solely for the purposeof bringing documents, credentials, andreports from their foreign conventionsand councils, claimed that the Convention was truly worth the long and costly journey they made. It was voted to

hold the next Convention here in thiscity because of the unusual facilities forcontact with all of the officers and departments of the Organization, and because of the wonderful climate, andbeautiful sights.

We hope that those who were unableto come to the Convention this year willbe able to do so next year, and we arehappy that every member enjoyed thevisit and we were certainly proud of thefine class of men and women who represented the Order in every part of the

world. The daily newspapers of thiscity reported the activities of each session of the Convention and publisheda picture of the foreign delegates, andin every way expressed their joy in having this large Convention held in San Jose. The results, nationally and internationally, of this Convention, will bemade known from time to time inarticles and comments appearing in our“Rosicrucian Digest” and "RosicrucianForum.”

Developing Psychic CentersAN IMPORTANT ELEMENT IN SPIRITUAL GROWTH

HERE is more mysteryand less truth surrounding the real factsof psychic development

in the Occidental worldthan in the Orientalcountries, where such

development has been a prerequisite tospiritual growth for hundreds of years.In the Western world intellectual development seems to have taken precedence over the spiritual or psychic, andit is only within recent years that boththe intellectual and the uneducated havecome to realize that psychic development, bringing with it the proper degreeof Cosmic attunement and an influx of Cosmic power, will do more, or at least

has as much to do with the individual inthe attainment of success and happinessin the material world as will intellectualdevelopment and the mastership of thearts and sciences.

It seems difficult for the averageWestern mind to realize that his beingis dual and that, therefore, he is dual inexpression, dual in association with universal forces, and dual in potentialities. The intellectual or purely mental side of man is associated with his earthlyphysical expression and its greatest de

velopment, whereby the most eminentprowess of physical man may bereached, is, after all, wholly secondaryto the attainment and power that is inthe psychic and spiritual side of his being. The greatest among us in the intellectual and mental phase of development is not nearly as well qualified andpotentially prepared to overcome thecommon obstacles of life and attain continuous health, happiness, and prosper

ity, as the one who is only nominallyeducated in the material sense, buthighly evolved in the spiritual and  psychic sense. Of course, if we meas

ure success purely by the brilliancy of the physical mind with its polished abilities and its power to attract the attention of similar minds, we will probablyconsider the highly evolved intellectualtype as an eminent success. If we measure success by the mere possession of material things in abundance grosslyweighted and measured against the finerthings of life, we will also agree thatthe man who has mastered many material arts and sciences is highly successful. But, if we measure success by theattainment of real peace, perfect health,

and the ability to always have the necessities of life and enjoy them to the fullest extent, we will have to admit thatthe person who is psychically and spiritually devel oped i s represent at i ve of the  more ideal possessions in life than anyone else.

Psychic or spiritual development isdependent upon the development of certain centers within the human being associated with the spiritual and psychicside of the individual nature. If intellectual development is dependent uponthe development of the brain and themental faculties, plus a training of theeyes, ears, tongue, and hands, to comprehend and express thoughts rapidlyand perfectly in the material affairs of life, we must admit that psychic development is dependent upon the development of certain psychic faculties andfunctions, which enables the spiritual orpsychic nature of man to comprehendand express itself successfully in thehigher things of life.

 The brain in man is an organ of themental side of his nature. The brainis not the only organ or the onlyphysiological center of mental activityin man. Every nerve in his body connected with the brain and terminating in

plexuses of large or microscopical nature throughout the entire system is involved in man’s mental activity. In anyof the arts or sciences, professions ortrades, in which man wishes to attainreal success, it is necessary for him notonly to store away knowledge in thecomprehensive and retentive centers of his brain, but to accompany this processwith such practices as will train and perfect the entire mental nervous system of his being to respond to the ideas createdin the brain, and thereby express and

create in material form the ideas thusestablished. The musician must not onlymemorize the elements of music andtrain his eyes to quickly read and comprehend the terminology of music, buthe must accompany this with a processof training which will enable the mental reactions to express themselvesnimbly and properly on some instrument. This requires the development of mentalreaction down to the very tips of hisfingers. The artist must not only learnthe technique of art and develop a comprehension of colors and form, but he

must train his hand and fingers, as wellas his eyes, to reproduce and expressthe thoughts and images created throughhis studies and observations. Thisnecessitates practice that involves notonly the functioning of the brain but of the nerve centers in various parts of hisbody. The same is true of the surgeonand the diagnostician, and of the carpenter, the sculptor, the mechanic, andthose in practically every trade and art.

In psychic and spiritual development,the principal center of perception and

comprehension does not lie in the material brain but rather in smaller organsassociated with the sympathetic nervoussystem primarily and with only relatively small connections with the mental nervous system. These special

T he  psychic centers are found highly devel-Rosicrucian oped in the child, and in every wayD i gest  equal in the power to function with theSeptember brain and mental centers of compre-1930  hension and expression. Soon after

childhood, however, the tendency toward the concentration of developmentupon the brain and mental system, accompanied with a complete neglect of the psychic functionings of the body,permits these psychic centers to become

dormant, and through such dormancyto become atrophied and under-developed. The result is that in the averagehuman being, adulthood finds the individual more mentally developed thanpsychically developed. This, then, isthe problem or the condition which facesthose who seek to change their mode of living.

If a child’s mental development isneglected throughout childhood andyouth, we find at adulthood a conditionthat is not only one of intellectual ignor

ance, but mental abnormality in aphysiological sense. If the child is nottaught to read and write, nor how tospeak properly, or how to observe andexpress ideas, the result is that certainareas of the physical brain and manyhundreds of centers of the mental nervous system become dormant throughlack of development, and this abnormalcondition makes it difficult for the adultto change the condition and becomementally developed without more application, more study, and more practicethan would have been necessary inchildhood. Every adult over thirtyyears of age knows that it is more difficult for him to memorize at that age thanduring his childhood, unless he has continued the processes of memorizing without cessation throughout the years of his life between his childhood and histhirtieth year. In other words, we findthat those who finished their schoolingat their sixteenth or eighteenth year andattempted no systematic processes of memorizing and carried on no definiteline of study for ten or twelve years,

find themselves at the age of thirty confronted with a real difficulty in resumingthe processes of memorizing. Lack of practice has permitted certain facultiesof the brain to become more or less dormant. The non-use of any one of themental faculties or of the senses, suchas seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, andfeeling, over any long period of time,would cause these faculties to becomedormant and abnormal in action, result-

ing in the necessity for a special courseof study and practice to bring them backto normal action.

If this is so in regard to the mentalside of man's nature, it is even more

so in regard to his psychic nature andthe psychic faculties.

 There are psychic centers in thehuman body which function as intuition,prophetic sight, sensitiveness to delicateimpressions, comprehension of Cosmicurges, and many similar activities, whichinform the psychic side of man, and educate his spiritual being, and at the sametime enable it to express itself and accomplish things in life which the mentalside of man cannot accomplish. Thesecenters, having become dormant in

functioning during the childhood andadulthood of the average human, requires awakening and quickeningthrough study, practice, and application. The desirable result in this regard cannot be attained rapidly nor in a haphazard manner of development. Thestudy must be carefully graded so thatthe psychic and intuitive comprehensionof the spiritual side of man may becomeproperly informed in gradual stages,and this process must be accompanied bya systematic method of practice and development of the functioning of thepsychic centers and their organs. Theprincipal element in such a process isthat of time and not of concentratedinformation. Certain exercises, whichwill develop the centers, must be indulged in slowly and carefully so as togive each center the proper opportunityand time to bring about the physiological as well as the psychological growthand power of expression. The knowledge and instruction in the processes

and principles involved cannot be assimilated too rapidly, for they must notadvance more rapidly or proceed too farbeyond the development and growththat is taking place in the psychic centers themselves.

It is in this regard that the Rosicruciansystem of instruction has always beenthe leading system and the acknowledged standard. The leaders in theRosicrucian work are experts in their

line of instruction and guidance like untothe leaders in the schools of the mental arts and sciences, and are just asexpert in their proficiency as teachers asare the best authorities in the universi

ties and colleges of all lands. Just aswe would refrain from believing thatany university could teach the art of musical development or sculptoring,painting, engineering, or law, in a fewweeks, so should the seeker for psychicdevelopment refrain from believing thatany process of psychic developmentcould be reduced to a few weeks’ studyand practice. One of the greatest universities in the western part of Americahas a long waiting list of applicants whodesire to become students. It probablyhas the largest waiting list in America. This, in spite of the fact that it is not astate university, but one of the mostcostly in tuition and incidental expenses.Its success, however, gaged by the success of its graduates, lies in the fact thatmany of its courses, as, for instance, inmedicine, surgery, law, and similar sub jects, require two or three more yearsof study than is required by any otheruniversity. In other words, this university demands that its students give moretime to the courses of study than anyother university, and despite the fact

that this means not only a longer timein application and effort but a longerdelay in eventually entering into the profession and a considerable increase incost of tuition and other expenses, stillthousands are anxious to attend this college in preference to those whosecourses are shorter and where the expense is less.

Students who think that an extendedcourse of study and practice in psychicdevelopment is unwarranted when other

courses are offered that are short, brief,and simple, should think of this university and its success, and should remember that if the rest of our lives areworth anything at all to us, and if ourfutures are to become any asset in theattainment of our ambitions and hopes,then a matter of a year or more of additional study and preparation should notbe considered a handicap, but rather animportant element in our plans.

HE recent convention of 

Rosicrucians at San Joseduring the month of Julybecame of greater importance than we anticipated through the factthat it actually becamean International Convention before the second

session was assembled. We rejoiced inthe fact that the foreign jurisdictionswent to great expense and a great dealof trouble to have their delegates arrivehere in time to present their papers of fraternal affiliation and universal recog

nition of the good work being carried onby AMORC.

Among the high lights of importantmatters that were settled by the Convention are the following: First, the presentation of documents and records showing that the AMORC throughout theworld is one solid, universal organization without any divisions other thangeographical ones. These documentsand papers proved the long existence of many of the foreign jurisdictions, authorized the sponsorship and universal

recognition of the American jurisdiction,and warranted the exclusion of otherRosicrucian movements in America,which claimed to have been a part of theancient organization, but have absolutelyno foundation for their claims whatso-

for this Convention by the Imperator andU tgest  Supreme Council of the Order in Ger-September  many. The Rosicrucian Order there,1930  known as the Rosen K reuzer, has an

unbroken existence for many centuries,

for it has adhered to the ancient principles of the Order whereby each Supreme Grand Master is succeeded byone of his sons or a brother of hisblood. In some countries where suchsuccession has been made impossible because the Grand Masters had no offspring or relatives, the lineal descentthrough blood relationship has beenmaintained by the transfusion of bloodfrom the body of the existing GrandMaster to the new and succeeding officer before the transition of the former.In every case where an Imperator has

been appointed for a new jurisdiction,after a period of inactivity where therewere no direct descendants in the interval, the new Imperator was alwaysselected from among those persons whowere the nearest relatives to the lastGrand Master. Such selected persons

 journeyed abroad and in a high councilmeeting, and in the presence of otherMasters, was acclaimed as the nearestin direct line, and later the blood of thehighest Master in direct line was transfused into his body to give him the

actual blood relationship to the directline. Thus in all of the active jurisdictions today, the highest officer has received through transfusion the blood of C. R-C., and is a direct successor to thiseminent character whose original identity is so carefully concealed. TheC. R-C. of Germany, who became sowell-known in the 17th century, wasone of these descendants of the originalC. R-C., and it may be of interest toour members to know that our Imperator

here in North America has also receivedthe transfusion of direct blood becauseof his actual relationship, indirectly, torelatives of the original Rosen Kreuzersof ancient times. The German document

sent here was only signed and sealed bythe head of the organization in Germany, but countersigned and sealed bythe highest officers of the German Government and is an indisputable document, and finally countersigned andsealed by the American Consul Generalin Berlin. It states definitely and positively that the one “Rosicrucian’’movement in America, claiming to haveits authority from the Elder Brothers inGermany through initiation of itsfounder in a German Rosicrucian Tem

ple. is without any foundation in truthand that the said founder of this American organization was never initiatedinto the German organization as claimed,nor was he authorized or instructed byit in any of the Rosicrucian principles.A similar denial from other countries hasbeen presented a number of times, butthe claim has always been made that thisAmerican organization was authorizedby the German jurisdiction, and nowthis point is definitely settled for alltime. This explains why this Rosicrucian movement in America has never

used the true symbols of the organization nor the true name of the Rosicrucians.

Many resolutions were offered by theforeign and American delegates andvoted upon unanimously without a single dissenting voice among the hundredsof delegates who were present. Perhaps the most important of these resolutions was one which was later siqnedby every delegate, and which reads, inpart, as follows:

“Be it further resolved, That we

heartily approve of the methods, modes,and manners in which our Imperatorexecutes such supervision, direction, andguidance and, be it further resolved,

 That we, therefore, renew our pledge of allegiance and loyalty to our Order, itsteachings, principles, and every ideal forwhich it stands, and we further renewour pledge of allegiance and loyalty tothe Supreme American Council, the International Rosicrucian Council, and theGreat White Brotherhood.’’

 This resolution contained many otherstatements, beginning with a declaration of the recognition of the American jurisdiction as the sole American representation and continuation of the an

cient Rosicrucian organization, and itfollowed the passing of another resolution condemning the misuse of the wordRosicrucian in America by pseudoRosicrucian organizations and individuals or groups of individuals who havenever been initiated into the true organization or authorized by it or eveninstructed in its true principles andteachings.

Other resolutions were passed by thedelegates of the various lodges of theAmerican Order expressing their thanks

and appreciation for the work carried onby the American executives and pledging anew their whole-hearted supportof the present day methods and directionof the American branch.

Perhaps the most interesting of all of the announcements made at this Convention was one to the effect that as a result of the International Convention of Rosicrucians held in Europe this pastsummer, which was attended by ourSupreme Secretary and his wife fromAmerica, announcement can now bemade of the names and addresses of allof the members of the InternationalRosicrucian Council of the world representing every nation but two or three.In a few nations the Order is not publicly active at the present time, althoughthe high officers in such lands aredescendants of the ancient bodies, andare carrying on their work in secrecy.

 The present International Secretary of the International Council has beentransferred from Switzerland to Germany for the next few years. The Swiss

 jurisdiction was represented at the Con

vention but the transfer of the International seat of the Order fromSwitzerland to Germany, however, doesnot close the activities in Switzerland.Hereafter, those of our members whoare going abroad to visit in foreign landsmay secure from the Imperator the address of the International Councilor orofficers in these foreign lands, and verylikely the list of these representativeswill be furnished to every Grand Master or high officer of the American juris

dictions within a few months. It wasalso pleasing to our American membersto learn during the Convention that ourImperator, H. Spencer Lewis, had beenmade one of the two vice-presidents of the International Council. The unknown C. R-C still remains presidentof the International Council as in theyears and centuries which have passed.

Another important document votedupon and adopted by the delegates wasthe formation and statement of the trueRosicrucian creed. For many years sucha statement of what constitutes the Rosicrucian principles in life, as a sort of creed or doctrine of knowledge, hasbeen greatly desired, but it was necessary for such a matter to come beforethe delegates of foreign jurisdictions, as

well as the American delegates, beforeit could be adopted word by word andphrase by phrase and thus become thetrue international creed. This brief document was thoroughly analyzedthroughout an entire afternoon sessionof the Convention with much lively discussion and comment regarding nearlyevery important word in its phrasing,but it was finally unanimously adoptedand will be presented to all of our members and to the public generally, not asarticles of belief or faith but as principles demonstrated and known to Rosi

crucians as actual facts and by whichthey guide their lives and through which

they find joy, power, happiness, andpeace. This beautiful document will beprinted in several forms for general distribution and in the form of a beautifulwall plaque for our members. Announcement about it will appear elsewhere in the magazine.

As was predicted in one of our magazines, issued in 1918, the year 1930 liasseen the last and final steps in the unification of all of the true organizationsthroughout the world and the reestablishment again of international affiliations brought about through the revival of activities in some jurisdictionsthat have been inactive for a hundredyears or more. By the end of this yearthe AMORC throughout the world willbe one solid organization again, as it has

been in centuries past, with more jurisdictions active than at any other period of its history.

Our next Convention in the summerof 1931 in San Jose will probably be thelargest ever held in the world, and nowis the time for every member and everygroup to make plans to come to thismagnificent conclave. Our membersneed only speak to those who werepresent this year to learn with what sadness and reluctance they left the Supreme Temple on the night of the lastsession, proclaiming it to be the most

helpful, inspiring, beautiful, happy eventin their lives.

The Law of the Square

iN the multiplicity of books, magazines, treatises and encyclopaedias available to the

average person today,we see mar vel ousstrides unconsciously

being made towards a phase of thehuman mind that was earnestly desiredby many profound thinkers. This meanswe are gradually and intelligently evolving into a state where we indulge morerationally into sound reasoning, both inductively and deductively, than we haveever done before since the dawn of man's physical objective consciousness.

 This step, of course, makes us more tol

erant in all directions and considerations,for as we commence to realize theenormity of the field of knowledge asyet uncultivated, except in a few meagerspots, we embark upon a system of enlarged proclivities whose automatic tension is balance and equipoise in ourmental aspects and outlook, which inturns tends to temper our physical acts.

 Thus we engender such marvelous attributes as fraternalism and her components, love, mercy, justi ce, charity,etc., exemplifying thereby the Godwithin us.

Fanaticism is retrogression towardsdecay. A human mind laboring intensively in one channel is apt to becomeobsessed with hallucinations, and if thisis persisted in, it may cause an unbalanced condition. If we study the livesand works of the great mystics and masters, we will learn that they were adeptin not only one subject but many.

 The depth and breadth of the humanmind has never been thoroughly fath

omed nor explored. It plays the beautiful harmonies of life through thatdelicate, subtile instrument, the humanbrain, the five senses being the golden

strings of that instrument. WhenCosmically tuned chords are played,such as are embodied in fraternalismand its teachings, beautiful symphoniesare in evidence. These emanate fromour auras to those around us. settingforth vibrations of love, harmony andPeace Profound; and we become conscious of what Pythagoras meant in his“Music of the spheres,” to an extentbordering upon the realization of Macrocosm and Microcosm,—so aboveso below.

All the Laws and Forces of the Cosmos tend towards a balance. Everyforce has its counterpart or opposite,as seen in the laws of attractions andrepulsion, movement and rest, love andhate, motion and friction, order and disorder, negative and positive, male andfemale, etc. We accomplish all workand manifestations of energy by interconnecting a higher potentiality with alower, along the same scale, holding rigidly to those energies similar insequence. Nature seeks a balance sothat energy is liberated or set in motion

until a state of evenness or equilibriumis reached. Then we say the force hasspent itself. For example, water seeksits own level and in so doing performswork, as illustrated by the powerfulhydro-electric plants at N iagara Fallsand at numerous other water fallsthroughout the world.

 These, as they seek a stage of equalization, attest to the dawning of man’srealization of the powers of CosmicForces. As we now visualize the work

and energy of these unseen forces, thewhole scheme seems simple enough, somuch so that we lose sight of the tremendous work and mental effort of manto bring about the utilization of thesetitanic powers. To better illustrate the

unity and affiliation of these instrumentsor forces of the Divine Cosmic Mind, itmight be well to dwell briefly on man’sapplication of them as they pertain tothe above mentioned hydro - electricplants.

In the first place, to show the cycle,we must start at some known point.Matter we know exists in three states,—liquid, solid and gaseous. In the caseof the substance we call water, at normal temperatures it is called a liquid,for its atomic construction (H20) issuch that its vibrations harmonize with

the law of chemical affinity (attraction),and we visualize a liquid. When heatis applied the rate of vibration is raised.Since this heat energy cannot be destroyed it must manifest in some way inobedience to Cosmic Law. This increased vibration of the electrons causesthem to assert a paramount law, namelya state of transformation, and as thewater evaporates, vapor or steam (waterin a gaseous state) rises. Its bulk is increased. Therefore, it weighs less,meaning less earthly attraction (grav

ity). At this point it is well to notethat the regeneration brought about bythe fire or heat, which cleanses thevapor, causes to be left behind all theimpurities. This proves the alchemicalmystic principles that fire purifies. Thusas we are put through the crucible andour vibrations raised, we are purifiedand therefore evolve. It might be addedthat a misunderstanding of this law bysome person or persons led them tocreate that place which does not andnever did exist as a place, popularlycalled purgatory or hell.

 The winds of the earth, caused bythe shifting of the atmosphere and alsobrought about by the heat ions from thesun which is the great purveyor of cleansing forces, drifts this vapor over

T he  the earth’s surface. When a coolerRosicrucian strata of air is encountered, the tempera-D i gest  ture of the vapor is correspondingly de-Sept ember  creased, allowing chemical affinity (at-1930  traction) to assert itself, and the re

sultant water falls to the earth as rain,snow, hail or sleet. As the water accumulates on the geographical watersheds of the earth, some of the originalforces causing the dissolution or disas-sociation has not been fully balanced

out or, to use the vernacular of hydroengineers, the water has a static head;or if the water be poised high in themountains in some placid lake or behindsome dam, it is said to possess a kineticenergy.

 The theoretical power thus suspendedis liberated by providing a path for theasserting of certain laws. The pipe lineand penstock answer for this purpose.As the rushing water enters the wheel-house or turbine room, the first step onits way back to the ocean, mechanicalimpedance devices are placed in its way,

variously called blades, vanes or buckets, these being attached to a shaft orspindle. These vanes are groupedaround the perriphery of a circular discor wheel and as the force of the waterpushes one set of buckets out of theway, another set comes into play.

 Thus the power derived is continuous,and the water being momentarily impeded in its journey, gives up a part of its kinetic energy, which is now referredto as potential energy. Of course, thisis only one form of a water turbine.

Besides, there are various other complicated devices such as Lombard governors, automatic gates, remote controls, adjustable spillways, bypasses,etc., the description of which would filla book.

 The revolving shaft is directly connected to an electric alternator or alternating current generator which causes adifference of potential of 2,200 Volts.

 This current is then stepped up bymeans of transformers to 250,000 Volts(in some instances) and is then distributed over long distances to civilized

centers, to provide light, heat and powerfor our individual welfare and comfort.Before the water enters the wheel-

house, sometimes a fore-bay is used tomake the flow more uniform. After itleaves the wheel-house, it enters the tail-race, and thence by stream or river, onit goes to the ocean, from whence itcame;—and one cycle is finished.

Hence we may see how power is derived from this water seeking its own

level or balance. Thus it may be saidthat the positive ions repelled by thesun, through several transformations inobedience to Cosmic Law, provide forour sustenance and existence in more

ways than one.In metalurgy we find that the severalvarious processes used in reclaiming themetals from the crude ores is basicallyone of balance; that is, where an orecontains several metals, which is usuallythe case, the separation is accomplishedby using chemicals to repress or balance out from the flotation method all  but one metal. A succession of suchtreatments separates and reclaims thedesired metals.

Again, in the distribution and utilization of electricity and magnetism, dif

ferent polarities along the scale are connected to a motor or lamp and the efforts of these potential forces, in tryingto strike an equality, overcome resistance and perform work, the primaryfunction of the dynamo or generator being to maintain opposite polarities or adifference in potential. Thus the cycleof transformation goes on.

 This balance feature is true of allthings. In an algebraic problem westrike out or cancel or combine liketerms, and seek a proportion for the re

maining parts of the equation.If we make a purchase at the store,we expect the scales to even up.

 The employer expects that his employee’s labor will at least offset thefinancial remuneration he pays.

In our personal budget we should seeto it that our liabilities do not exceedour assets.

 The prudent business man balanceshis books daily, his accounts monthly,and his stock semi-annually.

It was formerly supposed that gases

such as Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Helium,Steam, etc., had no weight, since, if released in the air, they rise. However,we know today that a limit will bereached or a point found beyond whichthese bases cannot go, since they areheld in suspension by the earth’s attraction. A measurement of that attraction will constitute the weight of thegas being considered.

We see an exhibit of the power of thebalance of forces, or an equilibrium in

the retension of the earth, moon, sunand planets, within the confines of fixedorbits. Sunlight and darkness are aboutevenly distributed if we compute overa yearly period or cycle.

 To prevent external strife the nationsof the earth strive for a balance of power. As individuals, we should aimfor that same form of moderation andequipoise within ourselves.

Since we are in trying stages of evolution, no hard and fast line can be laiddown for all to follow, for “One man’sfood may be another’s poison.’’ A l i t- t le self examination will soon disclose just what we need for a balance.

 To the disregard of this God givennatural law, can be traced eitherdirectly or indirectly, much of the

Karma we have to bear. We frequentlyallow our impulses to overcome our better judgment, as in the case of over indulgence in food, until the laws havebeen set in motion and the results felt.

 Thus it is that history seems to repeat itself, for the resultant forces, bythe acts of humanity, in trying to seeka stabilized condition, swing li ke a  mighty pendulum from one extreme tothe opposite. But still this is nothingto cause alarm, for at every extremechange or swing, there are many who

profit by the experience and thereafterhold to a more balanced path or route;and as time goes on, the graph made bythis pendulum as we evolve, becomesless marked. For instance, very seldom do we buy the second gold brickfrom the same man.

 The real mystic sees and understandsthese simple yet powerful, co-ordinatedlaws; and from them he plots a curvedpath upward towards a marvelous goalthat looms with the brilliancy of Light,Life and Love.

We have all known people who apparently have a natural repugnance towards certain subjects such as mathematics, mechanics, arts, etc., and wehave been at a loss to account for theaversion. A recent reported achievement seems to hold a workable thesisfor this. A man in England has takenan indeterminate number known as theterm pi (3.1416), which is the ratio thatthe diameter of a circle bears to its circumference, and has carried it out toseven hundred decimal places. After the

task was finished, he worried as towhether or not he could have made amistake in his calculations. So he retraced all his work, found one mistake,and his labors now stand accepted ascorrected, the work having required over

ten years to complete. This endeavorcertainly deserves our highest commendation in so far as patience and per-severence are concerned, but the usefulness to mankind of this enormous arrayof figures is next to nil. It is possiblefrom the mystics viewpoint, that thissoul will have a natural repugnance formathematics in his next incarnation, inwhich he will develop other facultiesand strike a greater degree of balance.

In all the works and manifestationson this plane, we see an abhorrence of two things, namely, a vacuum and astraight line. To overdo any one phaseor feature is to border on a straightline, which implies a fixed beginningand a fixed ending along one singleroute. Search as we may throughout allthe sciences and records known to man,we will never find a successful straightline or vacuum method.

But we do find on every hand, twoopposing forces striving to balance,thereby inaugurating spirally evolvedcycles which become greater andgrander throughout all time and space.

In chemistry we find the acids neutralize the alkalis, and vice versa.Hence the antidote for all acid poisonsis an alkali, and for all alkalis it is anacid.

 The great French medical scientistand discoverer, Louis Pasteur, who gaveto the world freely his life work andknowledge, made use of the balanceprinciple in his anti-toxin serums, whichcounteract toxic poisons in the humanand animal kingdoms.

Bacteriologists tell us that there are

both disease germs and health germs inthe body at all times, and that a maintained evenness spells good health.

 The proficient mechanic knows thatin all revolving machinery, the moreperfect equilibrium he preserves in themoving parts, the smoother will be themachine’s operation. In high speed machines this must be done dynamically

as well as statically, or else the machine would soon wreck itself by excessive vibration. For example, if theweights between the spokes of a steamlocomotive drive-wheel are examined,they will be found so placed to helpcounteract the weight of the connectingrods.

In the botanical kingdom we see efforts of the various plants and trees tomaintain a balance or equipoise.

In paintings a clash of colors to theartistic eyes, means an unbalanced, inharmonious state.

A profound classic in the realm of music means evenness and harmony.

 The same law may be said to holdtrue for rhetoric.

Dietitions go to great lengths to outline balanced menus for their patients.

A careful, cautious survey of theabove, reveals a complete harmony andblending of the two and forty great Cosmic Laws. What marvelous system,order, law, power and intelligence areworking constantly through all things!

All the sciences present the same in

disputable arcane wisdom. Therefore,a thorough realization of one science,will be an understanding of the others,disclosing thereby the love, justice andequality upon which God ordains allthings.

A general summing up of the entirefield is,—In order to strike a sublimestate of proportion such as is compatible to Cosmic Laws, and to apply thissuccessfully, we must observe and learnthe full meaning of the word moderation. Let us strive to be moderate in

eating, sleeping, working, playing,studying, and in fact, in all things wedo let us exercise that virtue,—be moderate. Or, in other words, if preferred,let us live to be true, earnest, conscien-cious Rosicrucians.

Now, since the ancients teach us of forty-two Cosmic Laws, 4 plus 2 equals6; also 3 multiplied by 2 equals 6. Thenif we place two equilateral triangles together, one on the finite plane and the

other on the infinite plane, these, of course, having three points each, we havesix, which becomes four or a balancewhich in turn equals a square; and as6 of itself is a symbolized spiral, we

have a demonstration of the inter-coordination and harmonized relationshipof all Cosmic Laws.

Every known thing in the universeexists for a reason. The fame of ourbeloved order has spread over manylands, not so much in the sense of valoror personal enterprise, as in the sense of accomplishment of the seemingly impossible. Its great silent, unobstructivepowers are directed towards a real fraternalism, a genuine brotherhood amongall men, an equality based on justicebetween the sexes, and a great field of understanding and harmony between

God and humanity, and a sublimeamelioration between all the sciences, religions, philosophies and codes of ethics known. For nearly four thousandyears, its paramount teachings of the

Cosmic Laws have appealed to thehighest intelligence and the finest sentiments. A careful study of history willreveal that no one agent or system of agents has done so much to help theworld understand its suffering Karma,or the evolution of the soul, as has ourillustrious Ancient and Mystical Orderof the Rosy Cross.

 Therefore, the sublime teachings of the AMORC strike a balance withinthe hearts and minds of all its members,compatible to the Cosmic sign of the

BOVE everything else, theRosicrucian t e a c h i n gstend to be sane andrational and free fromfanaticism. Among themany principles taughtin the complete Rosicrucian system of instruction are those pertaining

to the prevention and cure of physical

and mental diseases, and in the many activities of the organization the so-calledhealing or Welfare Department is a verypractical and beneficial part of the greatwork.

 The fact, however, that the Rosicrucians give great emphasis to the metaphysical principles of healing, and to theimportant part that the mind plays in therelief of physical conditions that causesuffering and pain, should not indicate

to the Neophyte of these studies thatthe Rosicrucians condemn all other healing systems, or all the other schools of therapeutics.

 The history of the art of healing indicates plainly that men of learning andbroad vision have devoted their lives,from the dawn of civilization, to the discovery of such practical methods as willbring the most immediate and efficient

relief. In our enlightened day we maysmile at many of the ancient practicesand, perhaps, see in some of them a falseconception of the nature of disease, andlikewise a false conception of the curative properties contained in certain ingredients, or a false conception of theefficiency of certain processes or devicesused. It is easy enough to look backward and criticize these things, and itmay be our tendency to be unfair in our

cient methods as being entirely wrongor useless, merely because we are notfamiliar with what was really done orreally used in ancient times. Howeverthat may be, the fact remains that unquestionably the physicians of the past,

whether they were the Magi of the Orient or the medicine men of the westernIndian tribes, attempted with sincerityand unselfish devotion to serve humanity. Their errors of judgment or lack of knowledge were no greater in their fieldof effort than the errors made throughlack of knowledge in all other fields of human effort. Unquestionably therewere those in ancient times who believedthey had a superior understanding of the healing art, and who looked upontheir contemporary workers in other

processes as being either ignorant orwilfully deceptive and taking advantageof human gullibility. The history of medicine and the healing art is filledwith instances of contemporary condemnation of methods and specific remedieson the part of those who believed theyhad a superior understanding, withmany indications that these critics wereeventually found to be in error themselves and the condemned processes andremedies were later found to be of realvalue.

 Today we have a similar attitude on

the part of a great many who are onlytoo ready and too willing to condemnevery healing system or every specificremedy that is used by someone else,with the claim that they have in theirpossession or in their knowledge something that is superior. Human naturetoday is too prone to listen to the critical comments and condemnations of established methods, and too ready to accept the new thing that is offered, or theunique thing that is proffered with prettyoratory and many species of argumentsthat sound logical. The result is, thatwe often turn our backs upon that whichhas served humanity well and which maybe only partly wrong and very nearlyperfect in its nature, and take hold of something new that is still untried andunproved.

 The advancement of civilization doesnot come about through rapid stridesthat are more like freakish jumps, making great paces in advance of the com-mon-sense multitudes. It is the steady,

conservative, onward march of sane, rational research, and scientific unfold-ment, accompanied by the proper degreeof intellectual development to comprehend what is taking place, that resultsin the real growth of civilization. In re

cent years there have been revolutionarychanges made in the healing art, butthere have also been many fanaticalclaims made and postulations presentedby incompetent or scheming minds,tending to break down our faith andtrust in established healing methods andcreating a false reliance and trust in unproved and inefficient practices andmethods.

 The greatest change of the twentiethcentury in the heaiing art is based uponthe discovery of the influence of the human and Divine mind upon the physicalbody. Here we have a fundamentaltruth that is truly recognized by the material physician, or the practitioner of mater i a medi ca, as well as by the metaphysicians. But between the conservative attitude of the physician of the material school, who will not arbitrarilyabandon the proved efficiency of hiscarefully evolved system without a careful and proper investigation of thatwhich is new, and the enthusiasm of themetaphysician, who generally has hadlittle or no real knowledge of the mate

rial medicine science, there rises up theextreme fanatic who seizes hold of thesimple truth of the influence of mind andelaborates upon its possibilities and denounces every other system or methodthat has served well in the past.

 Thus we find the healing art todaydivided among practically three classesof enthusiastic promoters, or advocates. On the one side wehave the conservative workers andstudents of the mater ia medi ca  school. On the other side we have the

careful and conservative student of metaphysics. Among the intelligent of both of these two classifications there isa certain amount of agreement and acertain degree of mutual understandingand cooperation, for no one in either of these two classifications, who is thoroughly familiar with the subject, willclaim that there is not some efficiency,some truth, and some dependability inthe process of the other. But we havethe third classification, representing the

extremist, who has neither the foundation knowledge of the mater ia medi ca  school nor the intellectual comprehension of the true principles of metaphysics. They have developed a superficial

knowledge of terms and ideas and in theegotism of their own superior intellecthave evolved a personal science composed mostly of principles, which arearbitrary negations of the truth advocated in the other two classifications, andpresenting to the world astonishingclaims and undemonstrable pretentions.

 These extremists are sure to find a largefollowing, from day to day and year toyear, among the persons in all lands whodo not understand the rational progressof science, and who are easily thrilled

and astonished by every new revelation.Such persons are ready to believe thatall of the great truths of the past are inimminent danger of complete annihilation by some sudden revelation from theheavens, and that at any moment everyprinciple of life upon which we haveplaced our dependence in the past is aptto be proved untrue and that a new principle unheard of and undeveloped willmagically take the place of each of theolder ones thus destroyed. To such persons the bombastic announcements of the extremists are sweet music and mar

velous inspirations, indeed. They areready to abandon their staid and dependable habits and practices in life tohitch their wagon to a new star and gooff into that intangible world of speculation. They are the ones who are constantly seeking for something new, foronce they have burned their bridges behind them and started upon the road of discovery there is no thrill in turningback but only in going on and on, witha continuous hope that seems to be borneternally new in their breasts.

 Thus the extremists call out to theirfollowers, “There is no matter,” andthat all is mind and that mind can control all matter, cure all diseases, changeall physical phenomena, and create anew world of actualities. With oneswoop and a single gesture of the handthese extremists wipe out of existence allthe good that has been accomplished byother healing systems and deny all of the profound knowledge accumulated byscience.

 The conservative metaphysician, represented, let us say, by the conservativestudent of Rosicrucianism, realizes thatno more errors have been made in thepractice of  materia medi ca in the past

and present than are being made in thepresent misapplication of metaphysicalprinciples. Such a student realizes thatto the same degree that the human mindhas misunderstood or miscomprehendedthe real place in human life of medicineand surgery of a material nature doesthe human mind miscomprehend or misapply some of the metaphysical principles.

 The rational student of metaphysics,and especially the student of the trueRosicrucian principles, understands thatman is a dual being and that he has aphysical body as well as a spiritual orsoul body and mind. He realizes thatthe physical body of man is just as liableto weaknesses and abnormal conditionsas is the psychic or mental part of man.He may believe and thoroughly understand that all disease may have a primary or remotely antecedant cause inthe psychic or spiritual side of man, butthe manifestation becomes fixed in thephysical body and a correction must bemade in many cases, as well as in thespiritual part of man's being. The meta

physician who is conservative, and whois free from any fanatical viewpoint, willalso admit that while the metaphysicalprinciples are being applied to correctany possible cause that may lay in thespiritual or mental part of man and thushelp nature in what must inevitably takeplace, if a real cure or correction is tobe made. Granting that a real primarycause of disease lies in the spiritual ormental part of man. either through histhinking or through his actions, orthrough his lack of attunement with the

Cosmic's harmonious forces, a correctionof this condition does not constitute acure or a healing of the manifestationsin the physical body. Such a metaphysical correction merely places the suffererin proper attunement with the Cosmicforces and stops the original cause andgives the forces of Nature an opportunity to correct in the physical body theresults of the original cause. The physical cure, or the cure of any physical, abnormal condition, lies in Nature’s proc

ess of bringing the physical body backto a normal condition. To assist Naturein restoring a normal condition in thephysical body is not, therefore, a complete deni al of the soundness of meta- physical treatment. On the other hand,

to assist Nature from time to time tocontinuously restore the physical bodyto normal condition without attemptingat the same time to correct the spiritual,mental, or psychic cause of the condition,is not the most efficient way to bringabout a permanent or even satisfactoryrelief to the sufferer. Looking at thematter broadly, one would say that thephysician and the metaphysician shouldwork hand in hand, cooperatively, andat the same time in each case, in orderto bring about a complete and perma

nent cure.Our physical bodies are composed of the physical elements of the earth. Alack of any of these elements in the process of replenishing and reconstructingthe human body, because of its dailywear and tear, will result in an abnormalphysical composition, and the humanbody can not function perfectly andproperly if it is deficient in all of the necessary elements. If man so regulates hisdiet that for a period of time he eats nofood or drinks no water that furnisheshim with a certain amount of lime, he

will become deficient in these elementsand is sure to be abnormal to some degree. This is not a metaphysical condition, but a physical one, pure and simple. We little suspect how necessaryand important the various chemical elements of the earth are in maintaining ahealthy body, because under normalconditions our food contains practicallyall of these elements without any specialconsideration on our part.

When one travels, however, toforeign lands, and observes thespecial or specific weaknesses of the human body in certain localities due to the lack of the chemicalelements in those places, one is impressed with the marvelous process of Nature in uniting and blending so manyphysical elements into one body such asour physical body. Take, for instance,the persons who live in certain parts of Switzerland. The absence of iodine inthe water and green foods of that country results in a lack of chemical nourish

ment of certain glands of the physicalbody, which in turn results in the development of the physical abnormalityknown as a goiter, and the prevalenceof  this growth, which is merel y an enlargement of a part of the thyroid gland,

is very noticeable in certain parts of thatcountry. Americans, or those from otherlands, who go to live in Switzerland forany length of time, find that they canprevent the development of this growthby the taking of a certain amount of iodine into the system in tablet form orin solution. According to the extremist,this method of assisting Nature in maintaining its physical and chemical equilibrium in the human body is a "drugging" process and is the "taking of medicine” and something to be highly con

demned. To the Rosicrucian it is viewedentirely differently, for he looks uponthis matter as merely aiding Nature inher well-established process, for he cansee no difference between eating a number of imported foods which contain theproper amount of iodine and the addingof concentrated iodine to the foods hefinds in the country where he lives.

Nearly all of the fundamental principles of  mater ia medi ca are based uponthe idea of assisting Nature by introducing into the system in concentrated formthose chemical elements which are either

lacking, and have been lacking in thediet of the patient for some time past,or which are now required in an extraamount or larger degree in order tobring about a very rapid correction of the chemical composition of the body ina natural manner. This is the rationalviewpoint to take in this regard and itis one which the Rosicrucian takes andwhich the conservative metaphysiciantakes.

It is often argued that we should allowNature to take her course, and that any

attempt to assist Nature by speeding upor increasing the action of any of herprocesses is an unnatural thing to do.Such an argument would be more or lesssound if it were true that we were livingnatural, normal lives and giving Natureevery opportunity to carry on her normal processes in a normal manner. Butis this the case with modern civilization?Are we living such lives as gives Nature every opportunity to carry on her

natural processes in the human body? Take, for instance, the school of naturopathy. The advocates of this schoolare not all extremists, and the conservative workers in this field of research for

the betterment of human life have pointed out to us some unquestionable truths. The German naturopathic physician whodiscovered that many ailments and illnesses of the human flesh could be relieved, or cured, or altered and corrected, by the patient walking barefootedearly in the morning on the dewy groundor grass of the earth, brought to light aremarkable fundamental principle. Thereal law of Nature associated with hisrevelation was known more or less to allstudents of ontology and physical bi

ology. We know that in addition toour breathing and our eating and drinking the physical body of man requiresthe negative magnetism of the earth tosupply some of the chemical or physicalelements necessary to maintain a normalphysical standard in the body. We knowthat if man insulates himself from thisnegative magnetism, wholly or partially,he affects his health and the perfect harmonious composition of his body to thesame degree that the insulation is perfect. This truth is as fundamental as is

the one of depriving yourself of the benefit of the sun’s rays which affects yourhealth, for the rays of the sun are of theopposite polarity as those of the earth’smagnetism. The moment man began towear shoes or any other covering for hisfeet, which insulated him partially fromactual physical contact with the earth’smagnetism, he began to interfere withNature's normal processes. By his manner of dressing otherwise, and throughthe regulation of his diet, the unnaturalposition of sleeping, the cooking of foodsthat should have been eaten raw, and

the overindulgence in things that werepleasing and inebriating, while neglecting other essentials that should have hadimportant consideration, man has notonly interfered with Nature’s normalprocesses, but has slowed down many of the processes so that when recuperationfrom illness or the overcoming of an abnormal condition in the body is necessary, a longer time is required for Nature to perform her work than would be

necessary otherwise. To attempt, therefore, to assist Nature and speed up orincrease the rapidity of Nature's processes is, in most cases, merely givingNature her proper opportunity to bring

the processes up to normal standardrather than to a subnormal standard.But even if we were to increase the rapidity of these processes to a subnormalstandard this would be no violation of any natural law, but rather a workingin conformity with the laws of Nature.We do not hesitate to go to bed whenill and rest completely from all physicaleffort in order to give Nature a greateropportunity to do her work. But by thisvery act we are speeding up the normalprocesses of Nature, for we are cutting

down the normal expenditure of energyrequired in all effort and allowing thisenergy to be added to the reconstruction. This is adding to the natural rate of reconstructive work and is not a violationof any fundamental principle.

 The taking, therefore, of any physicalchemical element into the body in orderto supplant those that already exist inthe body, or to fill in the lack of essentialones, or to arouse the action or increasethe normal action of any of the elementsthat compose the body, is not, funda

mentally, a violation of a natural law. The extreme use of these things or thewrong use of them is all that can belogically questioned or properly criticized. To attempt to do with chemicalsthat which can be more efficiently donewith the mind is foolish. It may be donein ignorance and, therefore, should notbe criticized as severely and unconsid-erately as when it is done wilfully. Toattempt to decide how much we reallyknow about the physical composition of the body, and how much of the chemical

or physical elements may be safely usedand which are really injurious to thebody, is to venture into a field of knowledge that is not perfect and reliable. Butthis is no warrant for any criticism of the medical science or of the science of chemistry. What man positively knowsabout any of the fundamental sciencesand the great truth of Natureis so small compared with whathe does not know, and with what

he may never know, that it doesnot behoove anyone, even the greatestin any of these fields, to criticize the lackof knowledge or the indefinite knowledge possessed by anyone. The errors

that may be made in these fields of research and study are errors that are natural to the development of the sciencesand, when considered from the standpoint of human equationism and the useof the human intellect in these fields, aretruly inconsequential, despite the seriousconsequences that are often magnified inthe minds of those who suffer thru them.

As I have already intimated, the metaphysician, and even the Rosicrucian whois most advanced in the study, may makeas many gross errors in the applicationof his principles as the one who is de

voting himself to the chemical and physical correction of the body.I plead, therefore, for saneness and

tolerance in all fields of therapeutics andscientific research. There are somethings that are definitely known in eachof these fields, and when these areknown it is futile and unpardonable toneglect these truths or to fail to applythem. That there are many ills of theflesh and conditions of the body andmind that can be efficiently and morequickly corrected and altered throughmetaphysical treatment is undisputable,but, as I have said before, it is foolish,therefore, to presume or assume thatmetaphysics alone should be used in allcases and requirements of the physicalbody in a physical sense negated andleft unconsidered: and, logically, it is

 just as unpardonable to think continuously of the correction of physical conditions without giving any considerationto the metaphysical requirements.

We, as students of the Rosicrucianteachings and those of us who are devoting our time to the work in the Wel

fare Department of Headquarters, maypoint out the errors in the various therapeutic systems and call attention to theseerrors, as compared to more efficient

methods that metaphysics offers, but wehave never intended these criticisms andcomments to be either partially or completely condemnatory of the entire material systems of other schools. It is only

by calling attention to the errors of allof these systems and pointing out thesuperior qualities in each, as comparedto the others, that students will learnto discriminate when attempting to decide which system or which law of Nature is most applicable or efficient in anygiven case. That is why our teachingsand lessons do not condemn surgery ormedicine, but recommend them as freelyin certain cases and for certain resultsas we have recommended Christian Science, or affirmations of the New

 Thought methods, or our own. The

Rosicrucian system is unique, however,in being a rational blending of all of thepresent systems, because nearly all of the therapeutic systems known to thepublic today are outgrowths of the workand study performed by Rosicruciansin the past centuries, who have shedgreat light upon the fundamental lawsof Nature: and while others have takenup a various number of these revealedprinciples taught by the Rosicrucians,and specialized in certain separated onesto constitute a distinct and limited system under new or old names, the Rosicrucian organization has adhered to itseclectic rationalism and recommendations, as well as applied the best principles of all of them. This is why, aftermany years of practice in several distinct systems, I found great joy in working with the combined principles of theRosicrucian teachings, and find further,through their application, a higher percentage of results than is possiblethrough the principles of only one system. For this reason, I can recommendfrom personal experience the Rosicru

cian teachings and principles as beingsane and, therefore, easily understoodand comprehensible: rational and, therefore, highly efficient and masterful.

OT so many years ago Iwrote a number of arti

cles for several magazines dealing with thepsychological principlesinvolved in the propertraining of children, andmy one particular argument was that the creat

ing of fear in the minds of children regarding the existence of a bogy-manwas a cruel, as well as useless practice.

I suppose that most of our older members and workers will recall that in daysgone by, especially in their own child

hood, it was a common practice for parents to lead young children into the belief that if they did not behave or if theydid not refrain from doing certainthings, the bogy-man would get them.It was a common practice, indeed, forparents to say to a child that if he entered a certain room, or a certain closet,or did certain things at night, the bogy-man would jump at him out of the darkand seize him. The parents fosteredthe active imagination of childhood increating weird and fantastic creaturesin the child's mind regarding the nature,appearance, purposes, and actions of these bogy-men. Many children werethus restrained from doing things thatwere more or less wrong, but at the sametime a race of nervous and highly irritable beings was evolved, most of whom were afraid to sleep in the darkalone, or to enter dark rooms at night,or to be left alone under certain circumstances at any time of the day. Physicians and specialists in the care of children agreed with me in my work

among children that most of the nervousand mental conditions affecting juveniles

between the ages of eight and twelvewere the result of this constant fear andtrembling as a result of the fear of thebogy-man.

It was a long and hard battle withthe parents to make them realize that thissort of psychology was not only erroneous but dangerous and, in fact, criminal.But where is the bogy-man today? Idare say that if you were to go into anyone of the public schools of the West orthe East and ask the average child between eight and twelve years of agewho and what a bogy-man is he wouldlook at you with surprise and franklyadmit that he knew nothing about him.And you would also find that the average child today is no more afraid towalk into a dark room at night thanhe is of walking into a lighted one, unless some unusual experience in his lifein the form of an accident or a contactwith an intruder has caused him to becautious about entering a dark room. Inother words, the bogy-man fear has beengradually eliminated from the mind of childhood, and his existence as a

Satanic legate appointed from on highto punish little children has been eliminated from child life. That childrenare less fretful and nervous in their sleepand less easily upset in their nervoussystems since this change has takenplace is self-evident to every specialistof children's diseases and to every student of child life. For this much weshould be very thankful.

However, we adults still have our individual pet bogy-men and we are aboutas reluctant to deny their existence and

clear them from the dark corners of ourlives as we are to eliminate many of themore pleasant things of human existence.In the first place, our bogy-men are notrecognized as such by us and each one

of us would probably rise up in protestat the idea that we had such an intimatecompanion or two in our life. Our bogy-men are disguised under various namesand characters but, after all, so are thebogy-men of the children of a few yearsago. No child ever saw a real bogy-man; hence, his conception of one waswhat his imagination or his mental concept made it. Children naturally personified their imaginary bogy-men andmade them weird creatures, usually half human and half animal. We adultshave the same tendency of characteriz

ing our bogy-men but we do not shapethem into either human or animal formsbut give them more subtle and intangiblenatures.

In other words, most of us have somesubtle fears deeply rooted in our consciousness to which we hold fast with allof the tenacity of a bull dog. We evengo so far as to try to argue with ourselves that our bogy-man is not ima-ginery but real and thus we again imitate the nervous and highly imaginativechild of years gone by. But we insistthat since our bogy-man is real there issome justification for our fears of him,and likewise, some justification forour doubt that he can be eliminated ordestroyed by our will-powers. In thework of aiding those that come in contact with our various Rosicrucian activities in sanitariums, hospitals, asylums,and prisons, as well as in private homes,it is common for those of us whospecialize in phychiatry to find that thereal cause of some mental or physicalconditions is a subtle fear rooted deeplyin the consciousness of persons and

hardly recognized by any other symptoms than the reaction it causes in certain circumstances.

It is difficult to pick any one case frommultitudes as typical enough of all casesto illustrate the general principles involved. I shall, therefore, have to speakof several cases in order that you maygrasp the idea I have in mind. Take,for instance, the case of a woman whowas suffering from what she believed

was some organic weakness of the heartor at least a functional weakness of theheart. I must be indefinite because thecondition was indefinite. When hercase was brought to my attention she

had already been examined by manyheart specialists who told her that herheart was as sound as a dollar and thatthere was no reason for her belief thather heart was affected in any way. Allof these reports failed to impress thewoman, however, because at times undercertain mental and physical stress shefelt what she believed to be very definite pains around her heart. Now it isa peculiar thing, but it is true, that theaverage person is not capable of distinguishing the exact location of so-called pains in the chest or abdomen.

Probably the newspapers of today, withtheir continued reports of suddentransition due to so-called heart failure,are responsible for the common idea thatwhenever there is any sudden or sharppain anywhere in the center of the upperportion of the body it must be due tosome condition of the heart. It wouldseem that the average person forgetsthat the heart is only one of the organsin that part of the body and that thereare lungs, muscles, tissues, tubes, bones,blood vessels, and nerves in that locality all of which may cause some terriblepain or discomfort without involving theheart in any sense. It is very commonfor mild attacks of indigestion to be considered as phases of heart trouble andincidentally, very often a serious condition of the heart is mistaken for indigestion and is wrongly treated or neglected.

Self-diagnosis is one of the most serious causes of error known to everyspecialist. However, in this particularcase the woman absolutely believed thatthe pain she felt, or the dull ache, orthe “uncomfortable” condition she ex

perienced at times was located nowhereelse than in her heart. All of the reportsof physicians to the contrary were considered by her as due to ignorance orwilful deception. In a psychological interview with her, purposely worded andplanned to get at the bottom of her reason and thinking, it developed that eversince one of her grandparents hadpassed away suddenly during her childhood from what was believed by the

family to have been heart disease, thiswoman had had dread and fear of having inherited a weak heart. She couldnot tell me just how early in her youthshe had adopted the belief that heart

trouble passed from one generation toanother, or when that belief had becomefirmly established in her mind, and evennow she was surprised to know thatheart trouble is one of the few thingsleast likely to be inherited. In fact, itwas not until she investigated many reports in medical books and hunted upthe subject for hersel f in the works of eminent authorities that she became convinced that organic abnormalities of theheart were seldom inherited, or thattrouble or heart disease of any kind inthe lives of forebearers had any direct

influence upon future generations. Thisconviction, built up gradually and definitely, had the first shattering effectupon the fear that had been imbeddedin her consciousness for so many years.It was like a poisoned arrow to the vitality of that bogy-man. He struggled tomaintain his life and fought desperatelyfor his existence, but he was graduallyannihilated. And as this bogy-man fellinto a deep and eternal sleep the peculiar sensation from which the womanhad suffered began to diminish.

In fact, six months after she no longerbelieved that her heart was the cause of her suffering and she went to a physician and asked him to try and determinewhat it was that caused her to have the“uncomfortable condition” in her chestwhen she became excited, over-worked,or worried by some sudden incident.She explained that she had always beeneasily frightened by any excitement because there would suddenly come beforeher the possibility that some sudden excitement might bring on an attack of the

dormant heart condition which she hadinherited. The doctor then revealed toher in a convincing manner that her“uncomfortable condition’’ was merelya nervous condition of breathing andthat through the subtle fear in her consciousness and her frightened worry regarding her heart's action in any excitement she caused a nervous interferencewith her breathing, or, in other words,inhibition of the normal rhythm of breathing which caused momentary sen

sations of choking or suffocating. Ifound this to be merely a momentarychecking or holding of the breath, aswhen one catches his breath and it isheld by some unexpected fright. By an

alyzing the condition herself and nolonger having any fear that she mightbe “frightened to death,” she found theannoying condition gradually eliminatedfrom her breathing and the whole matter became a memory.

In another similar case an abnormalcondition of the spine was causing animpi ngement upon a nerve, which endedin or affected a small plexus near the leftside of the heart, and occasionally asharp pain like that of a rheumatictwinge caused another patient to feelthat her heart was affected and nothing

could remove this belief from her mind,even though doctors advised her thather heart was perfectly sound. She, too,had held an almost unconscious fear of her trouble through the belief that shehad probably inherited such a condition.Her worry and fear of the weakness of her heart was increasing and was unquestionablyaff ect i ng her ent i re nervous  condition, depleting her health, andbringing on conditions that might haveended in the very condition she feared.By having a proper spinal adjustment

made and the pains brought to an end,accompanied by an explanation that theheart does not suffer pains day in andday out without causing other manifestations, removed the fear from her consciousness and her health improved atonce.

With women the most subtle and insidious bogy-man is the fear of cancer.

 There are thousands of women who aresuffering day in and day out from minute pains about the chest, and especiallyin the breasts, who are depleting theirhealth and bringing themselves to anuntimely end through the fear of cancer. They believe that the pains they havefelt for ten or twelve years are painsfrom some growth of a cancerous nature in the breasts, without realizing thatno such condition would exist in theirbody for so long a time without becoming manifest outwardly, and thus leaveno doubt in their minds as to the truenature of the disease. When a fewmonths pass, however, and a pain in the

breast does not develop so as to showoutward manifestations of cancer, anywoman should realize that her own diagnosis of the conditions as cancer iswrong and, furthermore, every womanshould know that cancer is not as preva

lent as she thinks it is nor its symptomswhat she thinks they are, and beforeshe allows herself to develop this bogy-man in her consciousness she shouldhave found something about the real nature of cancer and accept authentic information as being final.

 Then there are the bogy-men that arecharacterizations of all kinds of fears.

 There is the man who has a deep-rootedfear that he is going to meet an untimelyend by riding in a train and the moment he is forced to board a train hebegins to suffer a nervous condition resulting solely from the fear that is sodeeply seated that it hardly comes forward to his objective consciousness. There are those who have fears aboutriding in automobiles or standing nearthe edge of a precipice or having sharpknives in their hands, or being in a stormwhere lightning may develop, or of go

ing upon the water, or going in swimming, etc. There is also a wide-spreadfear of germs. This fear is one of themost universal and one of the most difficult to remove. In the worst cases of this kind the persons are fearful of 

drinking ordinary water and refuse toeat in a restaurant or any place wherethey cannot see the food being preparedand handled, and are even afraid of thedust that fl i es in the air when walkingor riding. It is a notable fact that mostof the persons who have a highly developed fear of germs generally developsome illness of an infectious nature resulting from germ life.

From the foregoing illustrations youwill probably understand what I meantabout bogy-men in our lives. Untilthese are removed and our consciousness becomes open and bright with sunlight like our homes, we can not be surethat there is not some subtle bogy-manhidden away in some dark corner orlurking in our shadows. We havechased the bogy-man out of the lives of our children, now let us chase him outof our own lives.

ERHAPS the most beautiful experience for theRosicrucian student iswhen he goes throughthe wonders of "rebirth”; when he feelshimself gradually being“born anew.”

No matter what hisage may be, until he has awakened thespiritual power within him, he will realize that he has been nothing but a Living Dead Man!—Dead to the real beauties of the world—Blind to the wondersof Nature—Deaf to the divine music of the Cosmos.

Rosicrucian philosophy is for presentseekers after light what the spark of fire, carried by Prometheus, was to thefirst groping mortals.

Only one who has felt the soul stirwithin him can see the dense darknessthrough which he has wended his waywith the other living dead. He sees thehorror he has escaped. The death inlife l i ved by most. Being “born anew”

is truly birth from “death” to “life”—real life, as every human soul shouldlive it, from which to gain the attributesgiven freely by God to man.

Real Life is something very few live. True enough, people exist; but they arereally dead—the living dead. The ma jority cannot say that their life

How utterly miserable—how hideously fantastic must be the lives of theliving dead! After treading the first fewsteps in the W ay of the Light, the novicecan see what he has escaped; howblessed he is; how unfortunate othersmust be who stumble about in the existence of the living dead.

Humbly, we should give daily thanksfor our happiness, for our release fromthis living death, for our rebirth to reallife.

“Except one be born anew”!—Howwell those divine words are understoodby all Rosicrucians! To be born anewin the spirit.

What a revelation unfolds itself toour eyes! To be in life, amid old friendsand surroundings, but to feel yourself gradually changing—having marveloussecrets and wonders whispered to us inthe daily breathings of the air.

Gradually, through various stages,the Rosicrucian student is slowly reborn.

His ears and eyes are no longer usefulonly for sounds and sights of thisworld—heard and seen by the crowd—but become vital organs, whose psychicparts are given power to hear and seethings beyond this world—things un-dreampt of by the average human being. The grandeur of the world, its many

wonders, are regarded for the first time.Like a blind man suddenly receiving hissight for the first time, a person “bornanew” sees beauty he never imaginedexisted. In darkness he might have

imagined beauty approaching it, but henever thought of such wonders.

Where the ordinary persons sees acluster of flowers, the Rosicrucians perceive a mystic wonder of Nature—livingthings with spirit—flowers with life—

living, like all the natural beauties of God.Where the average individual sees

one plain color, the Rosicrucian seesmany tones and shades. Instead of asilent forest, wood or garden—as otherssee them—we hear the musical tones of Nature vibrating through every flower,plant and tree.

 The ears of the living dead are attuned only to material noises. The reborn seeker hears unseen choirs—thethundering harmony of the spheres,from which the mighty Beethoven andWagner drew their immortal musi c.

Beethoven was stone deaf to earthlysounds. Only his psychic senses aidedhim to hear the music of N ature andthe harmony of other worlds. How canskeptics go against this one fact? Yetmany declare the nonex i stence of thesoul!

After rebirth in life, gone are all ourprevious doubts and fears; our darkdespair and futile striving; we feel ourselves attuned with higher powers.

A reborn person gains compassion forothers. Compassion gives him insightto others’ feelings. He looks for causesrather than effects.

Compassion was the first attribute of 

the Master Christ. When we feel the

slightest touch of it, does it not provea great miracle? That rebirth gives uscloser contact with God’s law of love?

Love is constantly a topic for controversy. To accept as the real thingthe “love” of the majority, one would

do well to evade it altogether.Spiritual rebirth fills us with love forall fellow creatures. Love and compassion—is there any difference betweenthem? This compassionate love formankind reveals another great truth tothe reborn—that a part of God existsin every human being—that to hatethose less fortunate than ourselves, wemust of necessity hate God.

 The reborn person is faced with another fact—that every one is strivingfor some vague goal, some unknownthing. Is it not then time for us to helpothers along the way? A word. Aletter with a mere suggestion. Eitherone might work the miracle—mightfetch the living dead seeker to theLight.

When one escapes the army of theliving dead, foresight comes to him, withpsychic powers. Gradually these powers unfold within him with his rebirth.What the world regards as “supernatural events” are, to the reborn, nolonger so. The secrets of Earth, Air,Fire and Water become simple truths—

so that there is nothing in Nature hecannot control. The true Rosicrucian realizes, only

too well, that to gain the secrets andpowers of God’s universe—to escape theranks of the living dead—one must be“born anew.”

LifeLife is a record, not of successes and of failures, but a record like

intricate patterns in colors, and all of them contribute to the richness of 

the design. What looks like a catastrophe from this level is actually anecessary and beautiful unit in the mosaic. It seems that Life is all thatmatters, and we cannot destroy that if we would. So we go weavingin and out, and from higher regions of vision there is beauty in all of it.

It keeps seeming to transcend itself always. And yet in the wholescheme there is no discord. It is a strange puzzle to find that down here % ,—is conflict and pain and up above the same thing is only beauty. Perhaps (P Qit is as if a two-dimensional consciousness were looking at a beautiful S) runjuuistatue. Only a cross section would be visible, and the beauty Would be lost.
