    A N actual benefits be d e r iv e d from war? Yes. H istory is replete with num e ro u s a l le g e d examples. It is related that the extensive use of iron by th e a n c ie n t Assyrians in their i m p l e m e n t s of war, after discovering it among the H i t t i t e s w h o m

    they invaded, caused that metal to be more generally used by Asiatic powers for peaceful pursuits. T he raids of the Kassite hordes on the Babylonians in 2100 B. C. introduced the horse to that civilization. Likewise, th e barbarian Hyksos. a m y s te r io u s people, who swept down on and conquered Egypt about 1700 B. C. brought horses with them and taught the Egyptians to domesticate them. T he M oors who fought their way from N orth Africa into Spain, again brought to Europe the ancient culture of the E ast and of Greece, which had been stamped out by the decadent Romans.

    It must be conceded that a tremendous price in human blood, suffering, and misery was paid for such benefits. In almost all instances the benefits resulting from war were unexpected, and often most remote from the initial pur

    poses of the conflict. It will perhaps be contended that the numerous purported advantages derived from a major war would in all probability have emerged anyway, in the progress of civilization. T he principal advantage accruing from a war, not considering its tremendous mental, physical, and m
