THOUGHT OF THE MONTHTHE NEW COSMIC CYCLE

It is not necessary for those so inclined to make all of their good resolutions right at this time for there will bemany occasions and many opportunitiesthroughout the coming twelve months tomake lasting resolutions in all sincerity.Each week and each month of the com

ing year is going to impress the sensitive consciousness with the fact thatmighty important changes are takingplace. Only the man or women who is alaggard and quite satisfied to be out of step with progress and out of harmonywith all universal things will hesitate inpurging himself of many undesirablequalities and aligning himself with thenew conditions and the many opportunities. Such sensitive persons will be

impressed from time to time with the

necessity of making a firm resolution

and sticking rigidly to it and a resolution made under such circumstances andconditions is very apt to be more effective and more beneficial than those thatare made with such cold formality andshallow ritualism on the first day of the year.

Each of our years or cycles of time isruled by one of the great planets according to the ancient traditions, and thecycle beginning this winter is ruled byVenus. The last year was ruled by the

Sun. During the Sun cycle all conditionstended toward bringing to the fronteminent rulers, potentates, dictators, andpowerful personalities equivalent toroyal kings. It was a cycle in everysense of the word. It naturally resultedin an unrest and a contest among thesegreat rulers and the history of 1933shows twelve months of just such conditions. Even the United States developedand presented to the world a new formof rulership and dictatorship which hadnot been its lot for many years, if reallyever before.

 The coming year under the rulershipof Venus is supposed to be one of goodness, sweetness, and beneficence to thepeople. It should be a time when thearts, literature, science, study, research,good will, health and happiness are thethoughts uppermost in the minds of thepeople. Those who will get in harmonywith such Cosmic plans and vibrationswill find themselves more happy andcontented during this year than theyhave been for a long time. Those who

 year. There aremany places in theworld where thespring equinox onor about March 22is considered thebeginning of a

new year. Cos-mically speaking,however, we are in this month of January, 1934, on the very horizon of a newday and a new cycle which may easilybe called the beginning of a new year.

prefer to typify the spirit of the planetMars and who will discuss and talk of warfare and other destructive factorswill naturally be out of harmony withthe Cosmic influence during a Venus

 year and the natural result will be agreat loss of time and fortune on thepart of such young people.

 To get the utmost out o f life one mustadapt himself to the rhythm of the  great parade of progress and that parade isbeing led by the music of the spheresand directed by the Cosmic laws. Thosewho are out of harmony or out of attunement with such laws will findthemselves outcasts — unhappy, unsuccessful, and unprofitably employed.

Each man and woman has a mind and

will power that is capable of adjustingthe mental attitude and spirit of theindividual and those who fall into harmony with the spirit of the coming yearwill be the most happy and the most

satisfied when next January comes again.O f course, changes will take place for

neither an individual nor a nation of individuals can lift their eyes from thesordid things of life to the higher andmore beautiful without changing theview-point and without clarifying the

vision. The changes will not be long in

coming nor long in the making but they

will call for the careful cooperation of 

every civilized member of the world’s

social staffs.

It is the law of contrasts, of opposites, that makes life interesting, active, and enjoy

able. It is light that gives us an appreciation of darkness; it is pain and a troubled spirit

that causes us to seek positive bodily pleasures; it is also the sacrifices in life that make

the periods of enjoyment so gratifying, and make the ultimate awards of effortworth while.

At this time the Grand Lodge Staff is making preparations for the 1934 Rosicrucian

Convention to be held in San Jose during the week of   July 8 to 14. It will be a week,

for those who attend, of the fulfillment of cherished ideals; the opportunity of meeting

hundreds of Rosicrucians—men and women in all walks of life— to hear their views on the

principles so dear to every Rosicrucian; to meet officers and members from the remote

corners of the world; to hear profound talks and instructions by competent officers and

teachers of the Order. It may require a sacrifice for you to attend, but the sacrifice will

be well worth it. The gratification, the new enthusiasm, the inspiration that you will

receive, will more than offset the difficulties of preparing for and actually coming to the

Convention.

After all, we live for an end, and that end must be the obtaining of the most from

life, and the most from life is not merely the physical requirements, but also the mental

and spiritual things. Things worth while require an expenditure of effort and time—even

money— but the things you really desire, you would not do without because of sacrifice.

So  pr ep ar e now, to come to this Session.

San Jose is located in the heart of the Santa Clara Valley, one of the scenic spots of 

California. Combine your vacation with a period of illumination and instruction. Never

before has transportation been so reasonable. Do not deny yourself the pleasure and

happiness of this Convention. This Convention promises, even at this early date, to be

larger, more instructive, and more interesting than any preceding, because of the intro

duction of many new innovations.

H A V E a personalmessage that Iwish to bring tothe attention of allof our membersand particularly tothose living in theUnited States orits dependencies.Ever since theRosicrucians firstcame to the shoresof the UnitedStates and cast

their lot in with the others who camehere for the purpose of creating a newworld and building a new and betternation of peoples, the Rosicrucians individually and collectively have participated in the establishment and conductof certain movements and societies thatwere designed for the unfoldment of theindividual and for the evolution of thehighest cultural and material, spiritual,mental benefits of all life in this new

land. Good citizenship is not only aprerequisite to the advancement of aRosicrucian in the attainment of itsideals but a constructive participation inthe great work of eliminating all of thedestructive features of civilization is amoral obligation on the part of everyRosicrucian.

One of the most terrible of the destructive forces eating its way into thevery heart of American civilization today is the advancement of crime. I referto crime in all of its insidious features

without reservation. W ith the genuinetoleration and broad-mindedness thatdistinguishes the spirit of America, weas a nation of people have been toolenient in our attitude toward thoseactions, those practices, those habits,and customs which permit crimes orencourage crime and in many waysfoster and create crime. W e haveallowed children in their games of playon the streets and even in the schools toindulge in certain unethical habits andcustoms which inculcate a disregard forfairness, justice, and due respect for therights of others. W e overlook the factthat these seemingly innocent violationsof Cosmic and natural law can easilydevelop into criminal instincts or thetoleration of criminal practices. Manyinnocent and childish habits graduallystupify the youth’s consciousness towardunethical and unfair practices and tendto break down the moral stamina. Suchchildren are easily tempted a little laterin life to indulge in things which are

distinctly criminal or would be led awayfrom the straight and narrow path withsuch insidious propaganda as the criminal element seems to have established inAmerica for the very purpose of fostering and increasing crime.

If it is true in a medical, or shall wesay physiological, sense that the use of mild drugs in medicines administered tobabies and young children graduallyestablishes the habit and desire forstronger drugs later in life, and if it istrue that this danger was so great in the

country that national prohibition againstthe use of such drugs in patent medicinesand other remedies had to be established, it is certainly more true thatmany forms of crime so popular in

America today are the result of ournation-wide indifference toward theprimary elements which inculcate thesetendencies in our youth.

W e speak too often of innocent pastimes that are not criminal but which if enlarged upon become not only illegalaccording to many state and nationallaws but distinctly criminal. W e thinkthat the use of dice or other forms of chance in games are harmless becausethey are practiced by the youth of ourland in a casual way, and yet the useof dice has become a dangerous practicein this country and thousands of communities have young men in them whoare addicted to the habit of gambling ina large and dangerous way, resortingoften to criminal practices in order tomaintain and support their desire forgambling simply through the early useof dice and other forms of chance. Pettythieving leads to grand larceny, pettvdeceit leads to crimes of various forms;improperly organized and unguardedfoundations of groups or campaigns indulging in secret practices and insidious

habits lead to the formation of juniorgangs, and these in turn lead to thelarger forms of gang groups whichcompose the very foundation of organized crime in America.

 The records in every state penal institution show that in the past twenty years the average age of the criminalconfined there has been lower and lowering at an alarming rate. Whereas yearsago the average age of the confinedcriminal was between thirty and forty,today it is between twenty-one andthirty.

W e in America have a tendency tobelieve crime and the activities of criminals are of no interest to us until itenters our own yard and our own homes.W e shut our eyes and ears to all conditions around us and assume the falseattitude that it is none of our businesswhat occurs next door or across thestreet. W e never know, however, whenit is going to strike close at home.

 The recent very unfortunate lynchingthat occurred in this city of San Jose,

rigpht in this peaceful valley, was the result of organized criminal  pract ices  striking closely at home among thosewho had viewed these practices at along distance and had felt safe in their

 protection ag ains t cr im e by their  ownindifference to it. Too many resting secure and happy in this part of Californiawhere peace and contentment havereigned for so many years, felt that thegrowing criminal practices throughoutthe country would never come to theirown homes or to their own grounds. Butit did come and the resentment gradually culminated in unthinking and unreasoning attitudes of mind, resulting inthe deplorable action that was taken bythose who in all other affairs act reasonably and with due consideration for

law and order.

“ Crime must go” is the new sloganof the nation and this campaign againstcrime is now being rapidly organizedthroughout the United States and itsdependencies by the United States FlagAssociation, whose President-General isFranklin D. Roosevelt, and whose activePresident is Colonel James A. Moss,formerly of the United States Army,and he is assisted by many formerofficials of the government and by alarge committee of prominent men and

women. The United States Flag Association was incorporated under federallaw in April of 1924, but it has recentlyformed a crime prevention division of its organization known as the Council of  '76. The National Chairman of thisCouncil is Patrick J. Hurley, formerSecretary of W ar, and I am happy tostate to our members that Colonel Moss and the Hon. Patrick J. Hurley haveseen fit to select the Imperator of theRosicrucian Order as State Chairman of the Council of  76 for the State of  California.

But inasmuch as a number of ourmembers were delegates and representatives at the National convention of thisnation-wide Council held in Washington in November, and inasmuch as Ihave pledged the cooperation of all theRosicrucian members living in theUnited States, I now wish to urge eachand everyone of our members to participate in this nation-wide activity of crimeprevention. Each state and each cityand district will be organized with local

Councils composed of active participantswho are ready to give their moral andintellectual support to the furtherance of this campaign and to carry out theslogan that "Crime must go.”

Councils will also be formed among

children in schools, Sunday schools, andelsewhere, and I want to urge our members to watch the newspapers for anyannouncement regarding this campaignor formation of local Councils and askthem to immediately apply by mail orotherwise to any officer that is appointedlocally to represent the Council of '76in this campaign and offer themselves asmembers to the Council and as workersin the campaign. If there is a JuniorOrder of the Rosicrucians in your district, you should see that this Junior

Order supports the anti-crime movementand that the members of the JuniorLodge become members of the JuniorCouncil of ’76. As such they will begiven an attractive emblem to wear andmay have a banner for display in theirlodge room showing their allegiance tothis great campaign and to good citizenship and will be given valuable instruction in many ways in addition to theinstruction regarding crime and goodcitizenship that we shall see is introduced into the work and teachings of the

 Junior Lodges.

Remember, this is a campaign of education to prevent crime and not anorganization for the purpose of spyingupon criminals nor attempting to prosecute suspected criminals. The campaignincludes also the working throughproper processes toward having certainlaws changed in each state regarding thecourt procedures which heretofore havetended to delay the prosecution of criminals or to extend to them great leniencyor provide them with ways and meansof escaping punishment. If you are

interested in this phase of crime prevention certainly you should join with theCouncil in its great work.

But at least you should become amember of this new nation-wide constructive organization and wear itsemblem and show through your moralsupport that you and the millions of other good citizens are going to assist inthe great work against crime in theUnited States and prevent a large portion of it which is preventable throughthe united cooperation of its citizens.

You owe it to your family and to thosedependent upon you, young or old, aswell as to yourself, to see that this costlyhand of murder, theft, extortion, andinconceivable forms of torture bothmental and physical do not reach out in

the darkness of the night or even in thesunshine of the day and close its gripping fingers around some member of 

 your family or in your circle of friends.In no other countries of the world aresuch conditions tolerated as we have hadto contend with in the United States inrecent years and we alone, representingthe good citizenship of the UnitedStates, are responsible for such a diseased condition existing in our midst.

Clergymen, school teachers, professors, attorneys, business men and women

who have time and interest in importantaffairs— all are invited to give theirsupport at once to this campaign. If youwant to take more than a casual interestin the work, write a letter to the executive secretary, William F. Seals, care of United States Flag Association, 92315th Street Northwest, WashingtonD. C., and tell him you are a Rosicrucianand that you want to assist in the crimeprevention work of the Council of ’76 in

 your district. Sooner or later he willinform you how and where to makecontact with the Council’s representative

for your district and it will be the finestand most patriotic, as well as a trulyRosicrucian act on your part, to give

 your cooperation and moral support tothis wonderful work.

You will find in the book recentlyissued by us entitled, "1934 and W ar,”that our organization anticipated thecoming of this great war on crime because it is written in the Cosmic recordsand is Cosmically decreed and this is

 your opportunity to give your supportto something that the Cosmic hasplanned for the United States. Thoseliving in Canada or Mexico may not become regular members of this Association, but they can lend their supportmorally at least by talking about it andhelping spread propaganda among theiracquaintances living in the UnitedStates. Let us all work together andcarry forward the great banner of ourrespective countries wherever we maylive and rid civilization of one of theworst blemishes that has ever come uponits progressive spirit.

W e have had one interesting letterfrom the superintendent of a sanatoriumin an eastern state, stating that elevenpatients in one section of that sanatorium kept the Cathedral Periods with

extreme fidelity, and with unquestionablebenefits, and that while not one of themis a member  of the Rosicrucian Order, and not one of them is likely to becomea member for many months to come,they are deriving untold benefits fromtheir devotion to the high spiritual idealsof the Cathedral during the long drearyhours that precede the signal for retirement. When the inmates are left almostalone in their cells or small rooms, theyhave found consolation, strength, encouragement, hope, and many direct

benefits through spending these silenthours in contact with the Ca thedra l. As  one man stated, “The walls of my cellseem to fade away, and I am in the greatopen spaces with the hills and valleysaround me and the great heavenly Divine Cathedral above and in front of me,and there are no bars or restrictions, nolimitations or other things that hold meback from rising up or going out intospace and approaching the Cathedraldoor and entering it in the same equalstage of life as all the other Godly soulsof the universe.”

If you are a stranger to the Cathedralof the Soul, you should learn what itwill do for you by actual demonstration.As stated at the beginning of this department you are invited to write for a

copy of the book called “ Liber 111" dealing with the Cathedral of the Soul,and telling of its benefits, and of theperiods during the day and night when

 you may enter that Cathedral. All progress and

advancement of c iv i l ization depends on the pioneer, diligently andfaithfully working on the frontiers,penetrating into unknown regions, paving the way for humanity to follow. Butthe real, actual progress is only madewhen the great wave of humanity begins to perceive the value of the fieldsexplored by the pioneer, and graduallymoves in to take possession of them,thus permitting the explorer to move oninto new fields. Each one is dependentupon the other.

Such rapid strides have been made inscience that it is almost beyond thecomprehension of the masses; consequently, the real pioneers in this fieldare so far ahead of humanity as a massthat it can safely be said that they are‘living ahead of their time.’ Accordingto an article that appeared in “ Nature’sPath,” September, 1933, an army of over two thousand learned and experienced medical men in England is planning to overthrow a barrier which hasbeen holding medical science confined in

the past, and is honestly going toattempt to move on into a frontier, paving the way for humanity to follow.

 These two thousand or more learnedmen are not making any move promptedby the impulse of the moment nor influenced by any foolish emotion; theyare making a step carefully thought outand planned quietly for ten years, basingtheir move on sound reasoning and onhundreds of tests and experiments whichverify and prove beyond a shadow of adoubt the wisdom of this move.

"Medicine has been side-tracked,”says this army of doctors; and the basisof their new movement is the belief thatthe germ theory is incorrect and thatthe world is now ready for the newertheory of medicine, which will endeavorto eliminate disease by eliminating itscause. They believe that medicine hasbeen side-tracked in the past by thetheory that germs are the specific causeof disease, and that each disease has itsspecific germ. That is, if we accept theirstatement as correct, it says, "The germtheory, which English medicine adoptedfrom the Continent, postulates thatevery disease is caused by a definitemicro-organism which is specific for thedisease, and is introduced to the bodyfrom outside sources.” Their newtheories are explained by one of theleaders of the movement, who says, "Imaintain that in no single instance has

it been conclusively proved that any

micro-organism is the specific cause of 

the disease.”

 Think of it! After these many yearsin which medical science has continuedto tell us that specific germs cause specific diseases, we are going to learn thatsuch is not the case. W e have beenmisled through the advancement of 

science and medicine because we haveonly known a portion of the truth andnot the whole truth. This germ theory,however, will not be discarded withoutleaving in its wake many contributionsto the advancement of civilization. Ithas taught us sanitation, and extrememeasures in sterilizing everything weuse. It has impressed upon the consciousness of the masses the ideas of cleanliness so strongly that this lesson,alone, will survive any change in thetheory of medicine and will contributeto the general good health of allthroughout all time. However, we mustnot stand in the way of progress, butmust lend an ear to the teachings of newmedical science, which is beginning tolead more and more toward a biochemical theory which maintains that afaulty living, unhygienic surroundings,wrong mental and emotional states, impair the vital functions of the body,causing a disturbance of the chemicalactions and reactions, and this disturbance leads to disease.

 This army of learned men, contributing its utmost, trying to get away fromthe old theory of running medicine forprofit, and to get down to the principleof practicing medicine for good results,is endeavoring to interest the Britishgovernment in a movement to reorganizeagriculture in such a way that farmerswill be taught how to balance theminerals in the land, and thus intensifythe minerals absorbed in the crops. Andthese new crops, properly grown, properly harvested, correctly treated, willcontribute more toward the elimination

of disease as they find their way to thedining-room table, than any form of treatment that can be administered afterthe disease has once started. Why?Simply because they will supply theneeded and essential elements which are

absolutely necessary in the proper func

tioning of the human body.

who have contributed to the good of 

humanity, we remove our hats and give

a brotherly salute to this army of twothousand doctors who most certainlyare pioneering the move of medicalscience in the right direction.

It has long been the contention of theRosicrucians that health depends onproper thinking as well as proper eatingand through all the ages since the inception of the Order, every member hasbeen taught to keep his body healthy if he would have a clear mind. Healthdoes not depend wholly on the mind,nor does it depend wholly on physicaland material things, but on a safe, saneunderstanding of each.

W e hear repeatedly of the power of ‘mind over matter,' and with some it hasbecome a stock phrase, babbled withoutthought, which clearly indicates that

there is no true understanding of the realmeaning of the phrase. It cannot betaken literally, and was not so intendedby the one who created the statement.But that is a different story.

Mind, at the very most, can only influence matter; it can direct some functions of matter, but never has and neverwill absolutely control it. As a rule,when we speak of mind over matter, weare thinking of man’s human consciousness directing the matter of which hisown body is composed. But how many

stop to think what influence matter— meaning the human body— has over themind which is resident within it? Iventure to say there has been littlethought upon this phase of it. But anyone who states that there is no influenceof matter on mind clearly shows that hehas given the subject absolutely nothought whatsoever.

When any group or community of cells is affected and out of harmony withthe other twenty-six million trillion cellsin the human body, then the balance of 

the twenty-six trillion cells is going tobe affected to a greater or lesser degree.

No man can think correctly if hisstomach is not functioning properly, orif he is suffering excruciating pains fromrheumatism or neuritis. No man cancontribute his best to his business if asluggish liver is impairing his sight. Noman can stand before his fellowmen anddeliver a speech upon the beauties of Nature if his face is inflamed andswollen from an abcessed tooth. And

most certainly, no artist, no scientist, nophysician, could joyfully carry on hiswork if his body were racked with pain,or his head heavy from high blood pressure. You must admit that man's

thoughts are constantly being influencedand his ability greatly impaired becauseof inharmonious conditions in the physical body; and the more we study thissubject, the more we will become convinced that matter, of which the humanbody is composed, does affect the mind.Moving a step further, we see that oncethis effect upon the mind has takenplace, it, in turn, will affect the body,and the mind begins to run wild, tomagnify, to imagine. A pain is a dangersignal, indicating that something iswrong. Pains cannot be cured becausea pain does not ‘cause itself. If you relieve a pain without eliminating thecause, you are doing no more than theman on the road, who removes the redflag and drives on until he wrecks himself in the pit.

Some pains, however, are greatlymagnified in the mind. W e have beentold of the case of a man who spentmany hours a day at his desk, and because of some pains in his chest, he began to think he was suffering fromtuberculosis. Each day he found thatthe pains were still there, and was sureof it. He convinced himself. He changedhis diet, and even the diet of his entirefamily, that he might have certain foodsbecause he felt that he was partially aninvalid. This went on for many months,and finally, thinking that he might soonpass away, he decided to see if he couldpurchase some life insurance that hisfamily might be taken care of. Comingbefore the examining physician of theinsurance company, he was thumpedand bumped, tested and accepted— to

his great surprise. When, in a cautiousway, he made inquiry concerning thepains in his chest, the physician veryemphatically told him the only troublewas “writer's cramp,” lack of exercise of the muscles. They were beginning toatrophy, and the cramps and pains weresimply indications of a battle for life, abattle for survival. You can imagine howsoon this man stopped all his diets andtook an entirely new lease on life. Inthis instance, mind had a great deal todo with causing him to suffer, mentally,

 just as much as if he had really hadtuberculosis for a period of manymonths. And it was the mind being relieved and learning that it was not tuberculosis which immediately permitted him

to begin to enjoy life and all its beauties.Yes, mind influences matter, but alsomatter influences mind.

In an article which appeared in "TheAmerican Journal of Clinical Medicine,”March, 1921, by Dr. A. B. Jamison, wewere told emphatically that most of man’s troubles lie within his own powerto correct. Dr. Jamison firmly believes,as do ninety per cent of the thinkingphysicians of the world, that most of man’s troubles are caused from improper elimination. It is true that we eat

everything that is advertised for ourhealth, and just because the billboardsays that a certain product contributesvitamins essential to good health, wethink that all that is necessary for us todo is to consume large quantities of thisand that in order that we may have perfect health. But after we have eaten thisfood which the advertisement saysmakes good health, what becomes of it?Have we properly masticated it? Doesit lie in the stomach a sour, fermentingmass? If so, its chemistry is ruined, inmost cases, and the vitamins that weexpected to obtain from it are destroyed.Does it pass on into the intestines carrying with it poisons which are absorbedin the blood stream? If so, how can youor I or anyone expect to absorb theelements that the food is supposed togive if we allow this condition to continue and grow worse? Toxic poisonscirculating in the blood stream soonaffect every cell of the body; and asthese cells are affected, the mind will beinfluenced. Therefore, begin to cleansethe mind by first cleansing the body; and

continue to cleanse the body by continually cleansing the mind.

Everyone’s food requirements aredifferent; so one should not think that

 just because his neighbor fared well ona milk diet, he can do the same. Eachone should study his own system, hisown needs, his own requirements. Oneworks at a desk; another works in thefield. One is inclined to be stout; theother slender. One gets plenty of exercise; the other gets practically none. The consumption of essential elements

will be different in these two cases. Butirrespective of what food you eat, whatwork you do, what exercise you mayhave, and what your requirements are,the elimination of debris and waste mustbe in proportion to body consumption ortoxic conditions will poison that bodyand will hasten its breakdown, the mindwill become impaired, and the thoughtsdistorted.

Professor Bancroft, of Cornell University, in a press bulletin of the American Chemical Society, referred to ClaudeBernard and stated that for sixty yearsthe scientific world laughed at ClaudeBernard's theory of body chemistry,but now states that "we know thatClaude Bernard was right." Afte r sixtylong years, scientists finally learnedenough of colloid chemistry to understand and appreciate the importance of Claude Bernard's theory that the brainwas affected by the chemistry of the human body. It has also been determinedthat insane people’s brains are either‘puckered’ or 'mushy,' and that ninety-three per cent in a preliminary testshowed that there were two types orgeneral classifications of insanity— oneof the puckered-brain type and one of the mushy-brain type. Further experimentation has proved that by changing

body chemistry the cells of the brain canbe influenced; the puckering process canbe reversed so that the brain will become more relaxed, and the mushy typecan be strengthened somewhat. And tothe degree that this change is broughtabout, the insane person returns nearerand nearer to normal. Such admissionson the part of learned men and pioneersmost certainly substantiate the contentions of the two thousand or more doctors in Great Britain, that a good,healthy, strong race depends upon thechemistry of the soil in which the crops

are raised, and the chemistry of thefoods which go into man’s body. Andthe sooner we, as a civilization, stoptrying to find health in some magichocus-pocus wave of a wand, or byswallowing gallons of some obnoxiousmixture, and learn to build health intothe body rather than pour it in, thesooner we will become healthier in mindand body. On the other hand, there isthe extremist who expects to make hisstomach a refuse container, throwing

anything into it that meets his fancy,and then on bended knee asks a Divineand just God to give him perfect health.It cannot be done. As long as man wilfully abuses his physical body, he cannot expect a just God to set aside allCosmic laws of action and reaction andgive him perfect health. Such a personclearly shows that he does not understand the laws of the God to whom heis praying.

"Poison in the Blood May StirAnger,’’ is the headlines of a recentnewspaper article written by Thomas R.Henry; but in reading further in thearticle it clearly shows that anger alsostirs up and produces poison in theblood. An extreme fit of anger, which isapparently an entirely mental process,will so contaminate the blood that whena few drops of that blood are injectedinto mice for experimental purposes,noticeable changes in respiration werecreated, and it was clearly indicated thatthe mice were affected. But isn’t it truethat if one’s body chemistry is normal,there is less possibility of his mind flyingoff at a tangent, thus creating morepoisons in the body? W e must everbear in mind that health in the bodyproduces health in the mind. Health inthinking produces health in the body,

and this circle continues only for thebenefit of the individual. Then it alsomust follow that inharmonious conditions of the chemistry of the body produce conditions which distort the mind,and this distorted thinking aggravatesthe conditions in the body. And so thisvicious circle continues, to the detrimentof the individual.

W e cannot continue to babblethoughtlessly of the value of ‘mind overmatter,' without giving some thought tothe influence of matter over the mind. If 

we are to recognize an Infinite powercoming to us and expressing throughour minds, and if we believe that Godexists in all things, then we must also

believe that God exists in the soil, in the

herbs, in vegetables, fruits, and all

products of the soil, which, if properly

directed, will produce God-given har

mony in the physical body. The age of 

miracles has not passed, but people’s

concept of a miracle is not always true.

Not so long ago it was my privilegeto sit in the office of the InternationalResearch Laboratories, in the HobartBuilding, San Francisco, California, andlisten to one of the most interesting

accounts of the chemistry of the humanbody that I have ever heard. Mr.Nicholas West, who has been veryfriendly and helpful to me in giving professional information wherever neededfor correspondence, has been conductingover thirty years of research in the fieldof body chemistry. Twenty-three yearshave been spent in search and researchfor a cure for pulmonary tuberculosis,and today Mr. West has perfected inhis laboratory a cure for that conditionas a reward for his years of research in

that field. “To treat pulmonary tuberculosis alone,” says Mr. West, “ is onlyaiming at an effect. What I have lookedfor is the cause, and I have found thatit is due to an improper balance of thechemistry of the human body.” I alsolearned that due to his researches in thisfield, it is also possible to determine whatchemical element is lacking when thereis a tendency to epilepsy, a conditionwhich has defied the medical professionfor years; and when proper steps aretaken to supply the essential element,the chemistry of the body is evenly

balanced, and when the body returns tonormal, epilepsy vanishes. If there is anyclear proof of the effect of the chemistryof the body on the human mind in existence one certainly has it when hewitnesses an unfortunate person suffering in an epileptic convulsion.

But here again we have the case of apioneer progressing in fields ten, twenty,or thirty years ahead of the rank andfile; and while there are thousands of physicians, biologists, and physiologistswho will agree whole-heartedly in their

own minds with the findings of this research laboratory, there are comparatively few who will be brave enough toadmit it in any form of public statement.

Mr. West states further: “ Medicine,like everything else is never static, butmoves forward not only from year to

 year, but from day to day. It is the spiritof research that leads this continuedadvance — not only clinical researchwhich is taken care of by the medicalprofession, but chemical research uponwhich the physician depends to provide

himself with materials which he mustuse in his efforts to relieve suffering andincrease the human span.

“ ‘Research,’ as far as we are concerned, means seeking the truth, fromthe unknown sources, the new; it is acontinued battle and nothing more. Research in chemistry does not mean copying material from text books written inmedieval times. While there was muchwisdom during those times, the humanills and ailments were different, thepeople lived differently, they know happiness, contentment, and they also knewsomething about survival value. Ourpresent day civilization is changed inacts, deeds, and mode of health. Hence,the battleground cannot be the same to

day as it was a hundred years ago,because we have different things toovercome. To be truly right, we mustreject the questionable when it soappears. W e must progress daily, not

 yearly.”

A beautiful statement, don't youthink, coming from one who does notbelieve in God as a separate entity, butsees Him only as an all-pervading Energy, Wisdom, and Intelligence, whichis expressing in every useful herb andplant known to man.

 There are miracles today just as therewere two thousand years ago. Thesemiracles are coming to us from thescientific laboratories, but few of us lookfor them there. W e must not deny theexistence of God in all things, and wemust not deny that this Supreme Forcewe call God expresses itself to usthrough material means.

W e must maintain proper balance inour conception of life and not try to gooff on some tangent which leaves ussuspended halfway between heaven andearth with nothing to stand on. W emust learn to maintain a proper idea of  the importance of a harmonious balancebetween the two.

I urge you, as Rosicrucians. to givethought to these things, as have ourelder Fratres in the past. A Rosicrucian student, in addition to the energiesput forth toward the search for truthand enlightenment for himself, alsostrives to pass on to his fellowman somenew understanding of the truth which

will help others on the path toward abetter understanding of life. Scientistsin medicine and chemistry within theranks of our Order have always strivento contribute something to mankind. Letus trust that others in our Order wishingto help will investigate and support theadvanced findings of science, irrespec

tive of race, color, or creed of the individual scientist. Let us search diligentlyfor the truth and be satisfied with nothing else. Let us learn to recognize aCosmic Mind, a Cosmic wisdom and intelligence in all things, and be tolerantof the expression of God in those working on the Frontiers of Progress.

 T IS T H E truth,whether we areconscious of it ornot, that in a physical sense man isborn into thisworld, lives a few

 years and thenpasses out. Therealities of livingfrom the physicaland mental sensibilities are displayed in eve ryact and word.

Also this is a partial dream world. W e

dream more or less. W hy this is so hasnot yet been revealed unto us. Manygreat souls of the ages have endeavoredto understand thesecrets of the earth-realm. From some aspects much hasbeen discovered, but notwithstandingthe efforts utilized in writing books andin expeditionary travels, we are still aworld of individuals who are not wideawake. The consciousness of mankindwas a dim spark in the remote past.

As generations progressed and a mixture of races were evolved; as conquestsand many hazardous undertakings have

taken place by the brave ones of pasteras, the human family has arrived atthe setting in which we find ourselvestoday.

W e live such a short period of timethat we often unthoughtfully heedlife ’s meaning. Perhaps it is just as wellwe do, unless deep insight is given toone to raise the standard of better daysfor Humanity. The majority of peoplehave been inattentive to their existence;taking the bruises or joys of life indif

ferently; plodding ever onward throughthe maladministration of the Play.

 There is much energy in the world.

Enthusiasm is necessary, however, inorder for action to accomplish its purpose. But much of the course of life issmothered for lack of the fresh air of opportunity to become a hustler.

"Happiness is the only good; reasonis the only torch; justice is the only worship; humanity is the only religion; andlove is the only priest."

If happiness is the only good, whycan’t we have more of it? The mainreason is because of the unequal distribution of money. Another impediment

is the detrimental set-up of religion inthe world of the present time.Every one, who understands how to

use money, the ‘medium of exchange,’ should be granted a portion. Muchmoney is not exigent to buy happinessin a few ways which would gladden thehearts of civilization. Two thousanddollars is sufficient to give a family of five the amount of enjoyment needed, if a ‘standard of values’ is adhered to.

Despite all that has been propagatedregarding the ‘depression,’ it is a ventureto say that half of the country is yetliving in a luxury which demands manytimes two thousand dollars a year.

Can the time ever be for an equalization of wages? No. But a minimumwage should be established. Discussionson these subjects for years have oftencaused the blood of many to be taintedwith poisons. The poisons have beenselfishness on the part of many, althoughsome have fainted by the wayside, dueto their efforts given for the advent of abetter day for all deprived ones. As

civilization advances, either a sanermethod for life must come or we shallexit from the stage. It is a wish that afew happy days may be given before therhythmic breath of many shall haveceased.

"Happiness is the only good. Theplace to be happy is here. The time tobe happy is now. The way to be happyis to make others happy.” Let us createa new political regime, if the old politicalparties do not soon bring happier times.W e must have a new, reasonable, justifiable, humanitarian, lovable conceptionfor all people.

“ Reason is the only torch.” Let uscome together and reason! Manytheories have been given by men whohave been estimated as authority on

many subjects. Many of these ideashave been discarded. “ The highestscientific truths, the greatest discoveries,are simply shadows.” But we must always be willing to learn. Let us reasonin an open-minded, understandable, researchful method.

Is there any reason why we shouldn’tbe happy? No. Is there a reason whywe are not happy these days? Yes.Reason is blocked by difference of opinion. W hy the difference? Becauseof selfish goals which are sought. W hy

seek selfish goals? For the desire of money and power. W hy money? Tobuy power. W hy power? For thepolitician’s and others leaders’ ownselfish objectives, or for the salvation of Humanity? If for the poor Human, thenhasten the new day. If not, pity us!Happiness will be afar off; drudgery formany— many.

“ Come let us worship!” Our sermonwill be on justice. It will not be a longsermon— but O, how enlightening— 'howhumane! See the altar erected at theseat of government! What are those

rolls of paper which the Leaders arecarrying to the altar? “ Oh,” says a bystander in the crowd,” didn't you hearthat many of the laws concerning oldcustoms are to be burned?” What arethe nature of these laws and why arethey to be burned? The answer wasthat there were laws of religion, economics, politics and others which are notconstructive for the elevation and thehappiness of a new order for the raceof the earth; therefore, they must be de

stroyed for justice has demanded it. Itwas asked which law was the most detrimental to humanity throughout thecenturies. The answer was ‘religion’slaws.’ The foundation for all laws in thebeginning of consciousness was religion, but as the years have rolled by, commercialization of it has torn it from itsmoorings. Therefore it must be destroyed and in its place will be adoptedthe New Religion, which is ‘Humanity.’ 

“ Humanity is the only religion.” Through the help of radio it is surmisedthat in the near future a broadcast willbe given to the world that “ love is theonly priest,” and that ‘love of humanity’ will be the only religion.

But what about God? Well, we knowthat a great force controls our destiny.

‘God’ is only a word signifying that‘Great Nature.’ 

W e are finite mortals. Our contactsare the call of the vibratory forces whichendow our nature. T he call of thousands of years is in our blood. W e areindeterminate beings— eating, drinking,sleeping— seeking for a happiness, whichwould be good for our existence. Inour reflections on the greatness of ourmechanism; on the vastness of the worldaround me; on the marvel of the vegetable, the mineral, and the animal king

doms; then, we become awed and aremore conscious of our sojourn here,which should awaken us to the meaning of ‘Truth.’ 

What is truth? It is a happy mediumhovering between two arguments. Analyze the argumentative questions andselect the main points of view. S MUSIC reachingour ears from adistance, so aremost of life’s experiences, comingupon us suddenlyor slowly, whetherwe are preparedfor them or not. Soit is also withMystical Psychology, it has come

down to us fromdistant times, andis tinctured highly with the experiencesand findings of many of great soul experience, who devoted most of theirlives to this profound research.

It is practically impossible to discuss“Mystical Psychology” without givingsome attention to its recently demisedstepson, “Applied Psychology.” What aworld of thoughts and memories springsto our minds at the mention of “AppliedPsychology.” W e can recall the promises made by those exponents of 

“Applied Psychology” which they gaveforth from lecture platforms in all thelarge cities of our country. Visions of success and great wealth were evoked inthe minds of their hearers. Knowledgewas to be given whereby in some vagueway the student could become a superman in a few short weeks or months.Our cities were apparently full of otherwise sane and normal people who weresimply waiting to be dominated by oneof these supermen of short creation.

While there is no doubt but that“Applied Psychology” produced somegood, it is equally true that most of thegood it produced was counterbalancedby much that was detrimental. “ AppliedPsychology” received its opportunityduring the aftermath of the great WorldWar. Who le nations of people weresuffering, homes had been broken on awholesale scale, hearts were tortured bythe loss of loved ones, and a shockedand stunned world was faced with the

problem of rehabilitation. The utter failure of many and various

religions to meet the thousand and onenew conditions arising from the WorldWar , to answer the many questions, orto give an adequate reason for its happening, turned many of their devoteesto the so-called “ New Psychology” asan answer to their predicament. W ecannot really blame the teachers of “Applied Psychology” for attempting tomeet the demand created by these newconditions, but we can at least question

their ability and preparedness to do so.One of the greatest tenets set forth

by the teachers of "Applied Psychology” was their understanding of success! It was of course greatly overemphasized. W e just had to be successful or life was an utter failure. Successin this instance meant largely the acqui

sition of material things. Our success

could only be measured by a display of 

what we possessed. Apparently, unless

we could in some manner acquire amillion dollars in the space of a fewshort years, we really had not arrived!

 The ultimate condition created was acondition of success madness.

 The psychology teachers emphasizedcontinuously, that there was an innerforce or power lying within ourselves,which had only to be turned on, or released, as it were, and the whole of creation was at our feet. Salesmanshipwas the ultimate of professions when itreached the super stage. This includedsomewhat of thought transference orsubconscious suggestion to enable us toget what we want, put over the deal, orin some way advance our individualselves. This subconscious suggestion atthe time of the sale was the most im

portant. If the customer wanted onlyone shirt we had to watch for the bigmoment when we had to implant in thesubconscious mind of the customer thedesire to take six shirts. W e had to holdthe thought and transfer it. The objective mind of the customer gives in andtakes the six.

O f course the customer probablyreally only needed one shirt, havingmore at home and five of the six wouldprobably have to remain in some drawerto feed the moths. However, this was

super-salesmanship.If someone in an automobile called ata tire store for a single tire the sameprocedure was to take place. The customer may have four good tires on thewheels of his car, and only one of thespare tires needed to be replaced, nevertheless, he must be sold at least twotires, and having no place on his car toput the extra one, the assumption wasno doubt that he would hang it aroundhis neck.

One would hardly dare to begin tobuy a pair of eyeglasses for fear of being forced to take two pairs, the extrapair presumably being for those mythicaleyes we are all supposed to have at theback of our heads.

Now these particular instances citedmay appear somewhat ludicrous, yet inreality they are a fair sample of whatwe were all supposed to be aiming fora few years ago in order to be successful. W e had to be successful or withshame admit our failure. Every mother’sson was really destined for the presi

dent’s chair, yet in reality how few canever hope to be president.

With a few short courses of “AppliedPsychology’’ a person of mediocreability and little real talent, who hadnever studied one particular subject constantly for six months, could, by a system of mental gymnastics, acquire somekind of force which would enable himto be successful and dominate others,many of whom had given years of hardlabor and sacrifices to become proficientin some particular field. It was ultimately found that it was a poor psychology which did not work both ways.I personally know of two or three peoplewho attended public lectures of three orfour of these psychology lecturers, afterwards taking their private courses. Yet

I also know that they are still lookingfor that mysterious something which issupposed to be lying somewhere in theirsubconscious selves.

If it is true as the psychology teachersassert that there is an inner force lyinglatent within each one of us, also thatthis is the real part of us and that bycomparison the outer self amounts tovery little—and that we can arouse thisinner force and put it to work for us toachieve great heights of success— if thisis true, which it probably is— does it not

logically follow that one should be verycareful in whose hands we place thedevelopment of this great inner self?Ought we not to look around and choosecarefully and deliberately?

If the average American is thinkingof studying Voice, Art or Music, he isvery careful in his choice of teachers fordevelopment and where he gives hishard earned dollars. Should he notexercise just as much care in his choiceof whom he shall allow to develop hisinner self?

It is here that the Rosicrucian Orderstands ready to offer its help and eminent services. It exists and has existedfor ages for nothing else but the true development of the inner forces of man.

 The Rosicrucian Order knows well thatif the inner self is correctly developed,the outer self develops correspondinglyand will reflect the measure of the development within.

It is here also that we enter  the fieldof “mystical psychology” and the domain of the Soul. Being the mother,

it includes ‘‘Applied Psychology” in itstrue sense and gives much more in addition. The conscious and subconsciousminds of the applied psychologist areexplained in their full relationship toeach other and to the soul. Even the

Soul itself and its activities is revealedto the student.A cursory glance at the dictionary in

forms us that “psychology,” as a phrase,originated as far as can be ascertainedin the sixteenth century, that it receivedgreat impetus in France in the seventeenth century and become more prominent in the eighteenth century and, aswe now know, even more so in the nineteenth century. So our so-called “ NewApplied Psychology” of recent yearswas not so very new!

However, the dictionary gives us a

little more information which gives uspause for thought. W e are told thatpsychology was originally looked uponas a branch of metaphysics, and that ithad to do with the working of the innermind and of the Soul. Also that it is insome way connected with  prtiema orbreath and infers that “psychology” orscience of the Soul, and mind,  pruema,  or breath, are intimately related. W e arefurther told that a psychologist could inno wise be considered as being a philosopher!

What a world o f enlightenment iscontained in the above. How manystudents of psychology outside of theRosicrucian Order can trace the relationship of soul, mind and the breath?How many students of psychology outside of the Rosicrucian Order know thatsoul and mind are intimately related tothe blood cell and are even affected bythe quality of the blood? How manystudents outside of the RosicrucianOrder correctly understand the construction of the blood cell itself, let alonethe extra knowledge of how to improve

the quality of the blood cell? How manystudents actually know that there is aconsciousness and intelligence in everycell of the body; that there is a difference consciousness and intelligencecreated by groups of cells that form anyparticular organ, and that this group ceilconsciousness in turn harmonizes withthe consciousness of the body as awhole?

What relationship has this knowledgeto do with the development of his inner

forces or soul qualities? It is this andmuch more that the Rosicrucian Orderplaces in the hands of its tested andworthy students. The relationship of the inner self to the outer self, or of body and soul is thoroughly explained

and tested by experience. The objective and subjective minds

or conscious and subconscious areclearly set forth, also the fact that thesoul qualities will depend to some extentupon the physical qualities is clearlydemonstrated. This is true "MysticalPsychology,” the correct and full development of both the inner and outerman, neither at the expense of the other,but each developed to work in harmony.

 This results in the right kind of success.Success as an end in itself is not any

thing! It is merely a means to an end. That end is happiness. All people yearnfor happiness, and intuitively sense thatits achievement or attainment is open toall according to the Divine plan. Happiness, therefore, is the ultimate of success,and is the inner desire which all possessand hope to achieve. It has yet to beproven that the mere success in attainingmaterial things or material wealth, everproduced true happiness. In fact thevery reverse is often the case.

Happiness is a condition of being, depending equally as much upon the condition within ourselves as upon thecondition of our material existence.

 This dual condition requisite for theattainment of happiness is nowhere morefully recognized than in the teachingsof the Rosicrucian Order.

 The studies are designed to enablethe student to attain to that conditionby a unique method of inner development which has been found successful inthe past and in the present era.

It enables the student to progress to

the point where he is master of his ownimmediate environment and if necessaryto leave one which he has outgrown. Itenables the student to build up themental forces giving keenness of perception leading to that most valuable andnecessary state, discrimination. It addsto rather than takes anything away, forif the student had a measure of choicebefore, he later has a greater ability tochoose, and in addition a greatly enlarged field!

album of accomplishments. Instead of appealing to the baser and primitive instincts of 

man, the most common appeal, "Berkeley Square" is a story that elevates the spectator

above his present plane of thinking and living; furthermore, it is one that is quite sym

bolical and, in many parts, Rosicrucian in spirit.

 There is an incident in the picture where the Egyptian Crux Ansata, the looped cross,

is presented by one character to another with reference to its ancient symbolical meaning,

which, of course, corresponds to the Rosicrucian interpretation.

HERODOTUSEach month there will appear excerpts from the writings of famous thinkers and teachers

of the past. This will give our readers the opportunity o f knowing these lives through thepresentation of the writing s which typ ify their thoughts. Occasionally, such writings willbe presented through the translation or interpretation of other eminent authors or thinkersof the past. This month we bring to you Herodotus, Greek historian.

Herodotus is called the fathe r of history. He is the first eminent historian. He recordedactual facts and incidents rather than the imaginings of man's mind or romancing about thelives and conduct of the gods. He was born at Halicarnassus about 484 B. C. in Asia Minor.

 Th e ci ty in which he was born at tha t tim e was Persian te rr itory ; therefo re, he was aPersian subject and continued as a Persian subject until thirty or thirty-five years of agewhen he started his travels. He visited nearly all the civiliz ed wo rld at that time whichfringe d the shores of his native coun try. It is estimated that he traveled a total of aboutseventeen hundred miles, which today seems extremely insignificant.

His close observation of the habits and customs of the people and countries that hevisited, and  which he recorded, won the  approval of the people at Athena. So great  wastheir admiration f or him that he was voted a sum of ten talents ($12,000). He was severelycriticized by ancient writers, bein g accused of untruthfulness. He was sub ject to the usualattacks of those who are famous and progressive. Modern write rs acquit him of the chargeof untruthfulness.

He is even considered today in the light of our modern archaeological research to be anauthority on the ancient Persian wars inasmuch as archaeological findings have supportedhis accounts. Below is given you excerpts from one of his works entitled, “ First HandObserva tions.” One cannot help but admire his descriptive powers. A t the same time itpermits one to know of the customs and superstitious practices of the masses in Egypt atthat time. Amongst all that superstition and ignorance were bound togethe r the few whodared to seek knowledge and cross the threshold of the arcane mystery schools of learning.

“FIRST HAND OBSERVATIONS"

E G A R D I N GEgypt itself I shallextend my remarks to a greatlength, because

there is no countrythat possesses somany wonders,nor any that hassuch a number of works which defydescription. Notonly is the climatedifferent from that

of the rest of the world, and the riversunlike any other rivers, but the peoplealso, in most of their manners and cus

toms, exactly reverse the common practice of mankind. The women attend themarkets and trade, while the men sit athome at the loom; and here, while therest of the world works the woof up the

warp, the Egyptians work it down; thewomen likewise carry burdens upontheir shoulders, while the men carrythem upon their heads. They eat theirfood out of doors in the streets, but retire for private purposes to their houses,giving as a reason that what is unseemly, but necessary, ought to be donein secret, but what has nothing unseemly about it, should be done openly.A woman cannot serve the priestlyoffice, either for god or goddess, but

men are priests to both; sons need notsupport their parents unless they choose,but daughters must, whether theychoose or no.

In other countries the priests have

long hair, in Egypt their heads areshaven; elsewhere it is customary, inmourning, for near relations to cut theirhair close; the Egyptians, who wear nohair at any other time, when they losea relative, let their beards and the hairof their heads grow long. All other menpass their lives separate from animals,the Egyptians have animals always living with them; others make barley andwheat their food, it is a disgrace to doso in Egypt, where the grain they liveon is spelt, which some call zea. Doughthey knead with their feet, but they mixmud, and even take up dirt, with theirhands. They are the only people in theworld— they at least, and such as havelearnt the practice from them—who usecircumcision. Their men wear two garments apiece, their women but one. Theyput on the rings and fasten the ropes tosails inside, others put them outside.When they write or calculate, instead of going, like the Greeks, from left toright, they move their hand from rightto left; and they insist, notwithstanding,that it is they who go to the right, and

the Greeks who go to the left. Theyhave two quite different kinds of writing,one of which is called sacred, the othercommon.

 They are religious to excess, farbeyond any other race of men, and usethe following ceremonies:— They drinkout of brazen cups, which they scourevery day: there is no exception to thispractice. They wear linen garments,which they are specially careful to havealways fresh washed. They practicecircumcision for the sake of cleanliness,

considering it better to be cleanly thancomely. The priests shave their wholebody every other day, that no lice orother impure things may adhere to themwhen they are engaged in the serviceof the gods. Their dress is entirely of linen, and their shoes of the papyrusplant; it is not lawful for them to weareither dress or shoes of any other material. They bathe twice every day incold water, and twice each night. Besides which they observe, so to speak,thousands of ceremonies. They enjoy

however, not a few advantages. Theyconsume none of their own property,and are at no expense for anything; butevery day bread is baked for them of thesacred corn, and a plentiful supply of beef and goose’s flesh is assigned toeach, and also a portion of wine madefrom the grape. Fish they are notallowed to eat; and beans,— which noneof the Egyptians ever sow, or eat, if theycome up of their own accord, either rawor boiled — the priests will not evenendure to look on, since they consider itan unclean kind of pulse. Instead of asingle priest, each god has the attendance of a college, at the head of whichis a chief priest; when one of these dies,his son is appointed in his room.

Male kine are reckoned to belong toEpaphus, and are therefore tested in thefollowing manner:— One o f the priestsappointed for the purpose searches tosee if there is a single black hair on thewhole body, since in that case the beastis unclean. He examines him all over,standing on his legs, and again laidupon his back; after which he takes thetongue out of his mouth, to see if it beclean in respect to the prescribed marks;he also inspects the hairs of the tail, toobserve if they grow naturally. If theanimal is pronounced clean in all these

various points, the priest marks him bytwisting a piece of papyrus round hishorns, and attaching thereto some sealing clay, which he then stamps with hisown signet ring. After this the beast isled away; and it is forbidden, under thepenalty of death, to sacrifice an animalwhich has not been marked in this way.

 The following is their manner of sacrifice:— They lead the victim, markedwith their signet, to the altar where theyare about to offer it, and setting thewood alight, pour a libation of wine

upon the altar in front of the victim, andat the same time invoke the god. Thenthey slay the animal, and cutting off hishead, proceed to flay the body. Nextthey take the head, and heaping imprecations on it, if there is a marketplace and a body of Greek traders in thecity, they carry it there and sell it instantly; if, however, there are no Greeksamong them, they throw the head intothe river. The imprecation is to thiseffect:— They pray that if any evil isimpending either over those who sacri

fice, or over universal Egypt, it may bemade to fall upon that head. These practices, the imprecations upon the heads,and the libations of wine, prevail all overEgypt, and extend to victims of all sorts;and hence the Egyptians will never eat

the head of any animal. The disemboweling and burning arehowever different in different sacrifices.I will mention the mode in use with respect to the goddess whom they regardas the greatest, and honour with thechiefest festival. When they have flayedtheir steer they pray, and when theirprayer is ended they take the paunch of the animal out entire, leaving the intestines and the fat inside the body; theythen cut off the legs, the end of the loins,the shoulders, and the neck; and havingso done, they fill the body of the steerwith clean bread, honey, raisins, figs,frankincense, myrrh, and other aro-matics. Thus filled, they burn the body,pouring over it great quantities of oil.Before offering the sacrifice they fast,and while the bodies of the victims arebeing consumed they beat themselves.Afterwards, when they have concludedthis part of the ceremony, they have theother parts of the victim served up tothem for a repast.

 The male kine, therefore, if clean, andthe male calves, are used for sacrifice by

the Egyptians universally; but the female they are not allowed to sacrifice,since they are sacred to Isis. The statue

of this goddess has the form of a womanbut with horns like a cow, resemblingthus the Greek representations of Io;and the Egyptians, one and all, veneratecows much more highly than any otheranimal. This is the reason why no native

of Egypt, whether man or woman, willgive a Greek a kiss, or use the knife of a Greek, or his spit, or his cauldron, ortaste the flesh of an ox, known to bepure, if it has been cut with a Greekknife. When kine die, the following isthe manner of their sepulture:— The female are thrown into the river; the malesare buried in the suburbs of the towns,with one or both their horns appearingabove the surface of the ground to markthe place. When the bodies are decayed,a boat comes, at an appointed time, fromthe island called Prosopitis,— which is aportion of the Delta, nine schoenes incircumference,—and calls at the severalcities in turn to collect the bones of theoxen. Prosopitis is a district containingseveral cities; the name of that fromwhich the boats come is Atarbechis.Venus has a temple there of muchsanctity. Great numbers of men goforth from this city and proceed to othertowns, where they dig up the bones,which they take away with them andbury together in one place. The samepractice prevails with respect to the in

terment of all other cattle— the law sodetermining; they do not slaughter anyof them.

the last book of the New Testament, seven plays

a prominent part. To those interested inoccultism, it has been a joy forever toplay with and interpret in many aspects. The Kabalists take from the SepherYetzirah, translated as the Book of Foundation, the seven paths of foundation; Life, Peace, Wisdom, Wealth,Beauty, Fruitfulness and Dominion.

 Thus in Chapter IV of this littlebook, is described the powers of the

seven double letters of the HebrewAlphabet, B. G. D. K. P. R. Th. Theseseven letters can be pronounced in twoways, either soft or with a hard accent,and this they compare with the sevenfoundation stones named above asfollows:

Life is contrary to Death;Peace is contrary to Misfortune:Wisdom is contrary to Folly;Wealth is contrary to Poverty;Beauty is contrary to Ugliness;Fruitfulness is contrary to Devasta

tion;

Dominion is contrary to Slavery.It is further claimed in this Sepher

Yetzirah, that from these seven doubleletters were formed the following:

Height, Depth, East, West, Northand South, and the Holy place in thecenter which sustains them all.

 The seven planets in the Universe:Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus,Mercury, Moon.

 The seven days in the week.

 The seven gateways in Man,— twoeyes, two ears, two nostrils and themouth.

 The Letter “B” reigns over Wisdom,Sunday, the right eye.

 The Letter “G ” governs Wealth, TheMoon, Monday and the left eye.

 The Letter "D ” governs Fruitfulness, Tuesday and the right ear, Mars.

 The Letter "K ” governs LIFE, Mercury, Wednesday and the left ear.

 The Letter “ P ” reigns over Dominion, Jupiter, Thursday, right nostril.

 The Letter "R ” reigns over Peace,Venus, Friday and the left nostril. The Letter “T H " reigns over Beauty,

Saturn, and the mouth. There was designed by means of

the esoteric reasons for this paragraph. The seven weeks are generally concededto allude to the seven weeks betweenPassover and the Feast of Pentacost.

 The Holy Palace refers to Jerusalem orZion, where man can communicate withGod. And so on each word in this Bookof Formation is interpreted to suit theideas of the various schools of occultism.

 The occultists go on further in theirenumeration of the importance of thenumber seven. As in what they call theSphere of Intellect there are sevenangels before the Throne of God— Gabriel, Michael, Haniel, Raphael,Camael, Zadkial and Zaphiel.

 The Heavenly Sphere includes thefive planets and the Sun and Moon.

In the Elementary Sphere there arethe seven planetary metals, the sevenplanetary stones, the seven planetaryanimals, the seven planetary birds, andthe seven planetary fish.

 The birds are the Lapwing, TheEagle, the Vulture, the Swan, the Dove,the Stork, the Owl.

 The fish are the Cuttle-fish, theDolphin, the Pike, the Whale, the

 Thimallus, the Mullet, the Sea-cat. The animals are the Mole, the Hare,

the W olf, the Lion, the Goat, the Apeand the Cat.

 The metals are Lead, Tin, Iron, Gold,Coooer, Quicksilver and Silver.

 The stones are Onyx, Sapphire, Diamond, Carbuncle, Emerald, Agate andCrystal.

M y researches through mythology,history, religion, philosophy, occultismand poetry brings to light many strangebeliefs in this number seven.

Shakespeare made this number famous by his "The Seven Ages of Man.”But before this appeared there was anOld Poem, ‘‘This world is but a Vante”

(vanity), which compares man’s life tothe seven hours of the Roman CatholicChurch, viz.; Matins, Prime, Tierce,Sext, Nones, Vespers and Compline;

 Thus— 1. Morning; The infant is likethe morning at first born, spotless andinnocent. 2. Mid morrow: This is theperiod of childhood. 3. Undern (9a.m.): The boy is put to school. 4. Midday: He is knighted and fights his firstbattle. 5. High Noon (i.e., nones, or9th hour, 3 p.m.): He is crowned a kingand fulfills all his pleasure. 6. Midover-

noon (i.e., the middle of the period between high noon and evensong). Theman begins to droop and cares little forthe pleasures of youth. 7. Evensong: The man walks with a staff, and deathseeks him. (This poem was publishedabout 1430.)

Madame Blavatsky in her SecretDoctrine quotes many, many pages onthe symbology of the number seven, andhow this number is related intimatelywith the Cosmos, and compares them toother religions. Thus I quote in heranalysis of Gerald Masseys’s on theseven creators: This is contained in herthird volume of the Secret Doctrine:

"The Elohim are seven in number,who her as nature powers, gods or con

stellations, or planetary powers,— as thePitris and Patriarchs, Manus andFathers of earlier times. The Gnostics,however, and the Jewish Kabala preserve an account of the Elohim of Genesis by which we are able to identifythem with other forms of the seven primordial powers. . . . Their names areIldabaoth, Jehovah, (or Jao), Sabaoth,Adonai, Eloeus, Oreus, and Astanpheus.

 — In the Phoenician mythology the El-ochim are the seven sons of Sydik (M el-chisedek) identical with the seven Kabiri,who in Egypt are the seven sons of 

Ptah, and the seven spirits of Ra, in theBook of the Dead— The Elohim, theyare the Egyptian, Akkadian, Hebrewand Phoenician form of the SevenPowers, who are Seven in Egypt, Sevenin Akkad, Babylon, Persia, India, Britain and Seven among the Gnostics andKabalists.”

In Job Chapter 1, verse 6 and allthrough the Book of Revelation, we likewise meet with this idea of seven creative Beings. Thus: the seven Spirits of God . . . the seven angels which stood

before God . . . the seven spirits whichare before his throne . . . the sevenSpirits of God sent forth unto all theearth— the angels of the seven churches,etc., etc.

Since in so many things SEVEN isthe symbol which refers to these creativeHierarchies, you will find in all philosophies and religions much speculation onits powers and mysticism. Even inmusic and art seven plays an importantpart, as witness the seven tones of the

scale, do, re, mi, fa, so, la si; and theseven colors of the spectrum, violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange andred. In psychology much is dwelt on theseven psychic centers of man. Pythago

ras held seven sacred because it wascomposed of the triad (3 ) and the tetrad

(4 ). So we can go on in endless procession enumerating on this mystical number and its significance.

In a future paper I shall endeavor todwell on the symbology of the various

things listed in this article, and go intotheir origins and significance.

THE RELATION OF EVENTS TO TIME

F A L L the chimerasof man’s mi n d ,time and space arethe most profoundand the most justifiable on psycho

logical grounds. Itwould indeed besurprising if th ehuman mind hadnot invented timeand space or theirequivalent wh e n

one analyzes the relation of human consciousness to theworld of reality— to things. The humanreason is both adventurous and courageous. To everything it gives indentityand it further provides a reason for theirexistence, presuming in many instances

that they have existence. To this, timeand space are no exceptions but ratheroutstanding examples.

Sameness is monotony. If all thingsperceived were realized alike, we wouldlack knowledge of our perceptions. It isthe comparison of perceptions, the anal

 ysis of their difference, that gives riseto the consciousness of perception. Thisdifference is an appreciated contrast orthe realization of a second condition.W e may have two objects which are

identical, yet we know they are not oneif there exists between them, no matterhow minute, a second condition or thingwhich contrasts with them. If it werenot for this law of contrast, the worldwe perceive would be limited to one

reality or object of knowledge. This contrast or state of difference may assumeinnumerable forms. There are, however,definite characteristics of contrast regardless of the various forms it may assume. Those characteristics are thenatural opposites, such as, heavy andlight, small and large, soft and hard,wet and dry, hot and cold, fast andslow. W e have the comprehension of more than one object only by the perception of an opposite in the nature of others, or by perception of an oppositebetween objects of a like nature.

One of every pair of opposites is bycomparison attributed a static value;that is, it is considered inactive in contrast with its opposite which appears tobe active. Thus darkness is consideredan absence of light, and all the colorsof the spectrum, variations of light, areconsidered the moving opposite of darkness. In organic matter motion generallyis from the small to the large. Thus thatliving matter which is minute is considered relatively permanent as having

reached a minimum: a n d ultimategrowth, on the other hand, is considered the moving opposite. For an example, we can imagine more readily aspecies enduring increased size with the

ages, but it is difficult for us to comprehend a species diminishing to an infinitesimal speck. W e may admit thatour arbitrary factors of permanency arenot so in fact, yet since it serves ourpurpose most times to relatively considerthem so we usually erroneously retainthem.

 The difference in nature of two opposites is a matter of motion. The nature of each is not independent of theother, or we would have two fixed factors with naught between them; for ex

ample, inertia and high speed. If weperceived just a condition of inertia andanother of rapid motion without anyvariation of motion from inertia torapidity, then rapid motion would appear to the human consciousness merelya fixed opposite of inertia. In otherwords, neither would appear to be motion: each would appear static in itsnature— inertia and rapidity. But thereason why one opposite is consideredactive by contrast to another is becausethere is a condition of variance in mo

tion between them which appears to beprogressive. Our common time is themeasurement of motion based upon arelatively permanent factor. The difference in motion between the apparentpermanent factor and the moving oneconstitutes the foundation for a table of time. The difference is computed by determining the mathematical cycle of motion from inertia through its zenith andreturning to inertia.

Let us visualize, for an example, twoballs upon a table— one so slow in mo

tion as to appear to be nearly motionless, and the other rolling rapidly in acircle about the former. If we were toplace our eyes on the level with thetable at the moment that the rapidlyrolling ball had just moved in front of the apparently inert one so that iteclipsed it, both balls would seem inertfor the moment. Instantaneously, however, the rapidly rolling ball would passby and we would watch its departure. Just before it returned to a position between ourselves and the apparently inertball, we would say that at that point it

had reached its zenith of motion, forafter that, even if for a moment, it wouldbe relatively inert. The time that elapsed,therefore, would be the measurement of the cycle of motion of the rapidly rolling

ball from its point of relative inertia toits return to that state. Most any namethat man desires, he could confer uponthat cycle. He could term it a year andproportionately divide and subdivide itinto months, or it could be designated aminute or five seconds. The name of the cycle is immaterial. Our table of time has been invented in just such amanner. Certain celestial bodies haveappeared to human sight to be fixed,absolutely devoid of motion: at leasttheir motion was beyond human sense

perception. They have been, therefore,designated as the fixed stars. OtherCosmic bodies were obviously in motionin contrast to them. The cycles of motion of the bodies perceived to movewere charted, that is, their progressionfrom the point of inertia and return became the standard by which man hassubsequently measured all motion.

 To the present we have been assuming in this article a condition of inertia,or a thing that is inert. This assumptionhas given time a realism. For time to

have actual existence there must necessarily be both motion and actual inertia.Logically, if what was assumed to beinert in fact was in motion, the differencecould not be a true standard for themeasurement of all motion. Time wouldbe as false as the factor upon which itwas based, that is, the inert thing orcondition. Is there true Cosmic time?Is there an actual past, present, andfuture? Is there progression to the universe, a movement from a previousinertia to a final one? The answer tothe latter questions lies in the first one— 

the hypothesis of a Cosmic time. If thehypothesis is composed of rationalpremises, it must stand until disprovenby subsequent knowledge, as must all

our conjectures of Cosmic manifestation.

If the premises are not rational, then the

hypothesis of Cosmic time should not

endure any longer as it has for centuries.

Fundamentally, the theory of Cosmic

time presupposes a universal cycle, that

is, that there was a beginning and that

there will be an end: that prior to the

beginning was inertia, void, and that theend shall be the same. Thus all that isexistence will return to where it began.

Let us think of the Cosmic beginningas a terminal, a pole that is without motion for if there is a beginning, it must

logically be fixed. If we are to supposethe universe as moving forward, thenthe beginning itself could not move forward. If the beginning moved forwardthere could be no end for the universewould never have left its beginning, andthe universe would be eternal. However,the general theory of Cosmic time doesnot entertain eternal existence. It speaksof a past, present and ultimate future,and at this point we are discussing thegenerally accepted theory. If a thing bepast, it seems rational to suppose it isfixed in contrast to that which passed it.If it is in motion, it is never passed unless it and that which is said to pass ithave a common end to their motionwhich they are both approaching. If there be no end they are approaching,then that which is said to pass something will soon follow it, just as two micerunning inside of a metal sphere. TheCosmic beginning being fixed, and if there is, as it is generally asserted, a forward movement to the universe, it wouldseem rational to assume at this point thatthere must be an end. If there is no end

or period at which motion or the universe would cease, then it cannot bedirectional or forward in its motion. Theconclusion must be at this point inthe discourse, therefore, as generallyasserted, that everything moves forward,that is, being drawn or propelled towardan end. W e may not desire to acknowledge an end to Cosmic motion or to allthat is, but if, on the other hand, wewish to accept the theory of a progressive universe and Cosmic time, that is,past, present and future, we must assumethis end. If the theory of an end is un

sound, so then are the premises uponwhich it is founded. W e have, therefore, for the sake of the analysis of thistheory two terminals— a beginning andan end, and neither of them are in motion. The universe motion, all reality,

all that is possible of perception, and

also that which is not yet perceived, is

that which is moving forward. It is that

which has left the beginning and is

approaching the end.

So far, we have brought forwardthree conditions— two fixed terminalsand a unit of motion. This motion doesnot extend from one terminal to another or from one pole to another, butexists somewhere between them. For if 

motion extended completely from onepole to another, it would be impossibleto deduce where it began or where itended. According to the same premise,motion must sever its connection with itsbeginning, for if it did not, the beginningcould not be distinguished from the motion. It would seem as though thebeginning itself had extended itself.Furthermore, under such circumstancesthere would be but two conditions of Cosmic time, present and future. Therewould be no past as we would neverhave departed from the beginning. Tofurther weigh the theory of Cosmic timewe must abandon the idea that motionretains its connection with the beginning, but rather moves independentlyforward toward an end.

 The question arises, assuming thatmotion as an independent unit movesfrom a beginning toward an end, whatmeans would be necessary to measurethe period of time that would elapse?

 The universe would be a unit of motionlike a croquet ball in motion between twogoal stakes. The beginning and endwould need be static conditions or states,beyond the universe, beyond motion.Yet, if we are to be dogmatic and statethere was a beginning and there is anend, then they must have an actual existence. For if they have no existence,then all there is, is a universe of motion,and as said before, it could not be progressive but would consist of merely aseries of changes. So for a continuationof our analysis, we must assign beginning and end an actual existence. Between either of these fixed poles, that is,

beginning and end and motion, therewould need be void, a state entirelyminus motion or inertia. Time would bedetermined by the approximation of motion to either of the poles of inertia;i.e., beginning or end. The relative sizeof the voids before and after motionwould indicate whether in Cosmic timethe universe had one-half or one-thirdcompleted its existence. Returning toour analogy, if we devised some tableof measurement of the period of move

ment of the croquet ball between its twogoals, when it had reached a point half way between them, we could then determine the period that would elapsebefore it reached the end goal. The

complete unit of time would be thecourse that motion, represented by thecroquet ball, traversed between the twogoal stakes. Considering the distancebetween both stakes as a unit of onehundred per cent, motion would be theindicator of what per cent of the wholecourse that had been traversed. Actualtime would be the duration of the periodfrom a fixed pole to motion.

Presuming, as we have to the present,that time is actual, to know the completeperiod of Cosmic time we would, as explained, need perceive the position of 

motion or the universe between its twopoles, beginning and end. If the beginning alone were known, that is, definitely established, and the end, thoughnot definitely established, conceived ashaving existence, then the past and present alone could be realized and the difference between them measured withfinality; and the period of the futurewould be infinite. One could perceivethe advance of motion in its course frominertia, but if the end were not definitelyestablished, motion’s relation to it would

be unknown. This brings us to a brief comment onCosmic space, that is, the condition devoid of motion and matter, as it isgenerally thought to be, and which thenwould have actual limitation, for wheremotion or matter began space would besaid to end. Cosmic space, according tothis concept, would be the distance orarea between a fixed point and motion, orbetween two fixed points. Thus Cosmicspace would be the area between thebeginning and motion and motion andthe end, considering the universe in its

entirety as motion. Space is merely thearea of difference between two conditions, if we accept the common supposition that space itself has no existence.In other words, space is held to be astate of non-being between states of being. Then how, you might ask, canspace exist in a universe of motion? Thisproves one of the fallacies of the presentconception of space. In relation to time,space is relative inertia. It is the condition that appears without change. If it appeared in motion, it would be

measured in the same manner as is time. Time is the measurement of a period of change, that is, the period from relativeinertia to motion, or the reverse.

Our fundamental premise for deduc

ing a true Cosmic time— past, presentand future— has been the supposition of the fixed poles of a Cosmic beginningand ultimate end. If we allay our theological faiths and many philosophicaland scientific conjectures momentarily,we must conclude that there is no physical proof of a Cosmic beginning orend. Because it may be difficult for thehuman mind to embrace the idea of anexistence that had no beginning and isself-generated, and therefore, has noend, is no excuse for inventing them.

W e cannot cast aside a conception because it is not compatible with human experience. W e are, therefore, if fairwith ourselves, obliged to reject thetheory we have been considering of either an actual beginning or end to theuniverse. If we do this, we subtract fromthe triune state of time two of its fantastic elements, leaving motion as theremainder.

A ll that we actually, sensually perceive is motion. It is conceded byscience and every well-grounded school

of physical philosophy and of metaphysics generally that all reality is motion,realized by the human consciousness assensation and later given identity orform by the reason. It is further recognized that the variations of the order of motion engender sensations in the human mind and account for the multiplicity of forms realized. Thus, basically,all reality now perceived has alwaysexisted. By this we are not to concludethat all the forms we are cognizant of have always existed. The variations of form, we reiterate, is accounted for by

change in motion, but the cause of thechanges has not been or will not alwaysbe eternal. It is perhaps one of thegreatest philosophical fallacies to believethat all now recognized as law andorder has always had existence. Whatwe designate as order and natural lawshould be divided into two classes— major and minor law. Major law is sodesignated because it is discernible inevery manifestation of nature. It isoperative in everything. To exemplify,there is the law of duality and the law

of attraction and repulsion. Major lawis not ideological. It is not purposeful,therefore, its result is mechanically andunintentionally the same, if not subjectto interference. The previous manifestations of major law at times oppose it,and this opposition, though not preventing additional manifestations, does varythem. Thus a major law originally mayhave had some manifestation of a certain nature, but because of interferenceby its own creation, its second resultwould be different. There would bethen two results and to the human consciousness they would appear different, yet be fundamentally the same. Everytime there would be opposition to themajor law, there would be varying results. These oppositions are the minor

laws. Some may be eternal in the sensethat they are always perceived, thenagain others may change their nature. The minor laws generally cannot bepermanent. Therefore, in declaring thatall reality now perceived has alwaysbeen, it is meant that all major lawunderlying the varying forms of senseperception have had continuous existence.

With the absence of the fixed poles,beginning and end, we must declarethat there cannot be progression tomotion or the universe, as we previously

considered, but instead mere change. This motion is not directional in thesense that it is moving from point topoint such as traversing a course between two poles. If the major laws nowperceived in all things have been perceived since there has been consciousness and will be perceived as long asthere is consciousness and reason topermit cognizance of them, then motionhas not moved toward an end from anybeginning. Perception as a method of discerning motion has always been thesame. Motion then exists alike in whatwe call the past, present and future.Furthermore, the only tangible elementof time, as said heretofore, is motion. If motion always is and basically is thesame whenever perceived, then it is al-ways of the present. The statement atthis point can be made that past andfuture are illusions. W e shall see whetherthis is definitely so with further analysis.

Let us consider events. What is anevent? It is a combination of conditionsproducing a number of sensual impres

sions which result in their becoming anobject of knowledge, that is, somethingwe say we know. An event may or maynot be different from a preceding one insensual impressions. Further, it maynever have occurred previously. Itscomposite form may have been causedby the intervention of some manifestation of a major law generally termednatural phenomena, or by the act of man which would also be an interventionof major law. For example, when manproduces a machine which creates someform, whatever its nature, and whichmay not have ever previously been perceived, this reason of man, a manifestation of Cosmic law, has wrought a minorlaw of mechanics. The entire process,the machine and its law of mechanics

and its product, becomes an event. Anevent, logically, is a condition of minorlaw, of change. It is easily seen that itcould not exist apart from them.

 There is not a succession of events. This may at first be difficult to comprehend. W e are deceived by the processof consciousness to think of events asfollowing each other because we areperiodically conscious of one and thenanother. If, however, events are circumscribed by a realm of motion, that is, if they can have no existence apart frommotion, then they are continuous. Every

sensual impulse, that is, all impulses of motion received by the sense organs, arerealized in the consciousness as being of the present. Those sensations of whichwe are cognizant as being the result of sense perception are always said to beof the present. In fact, we see, hear,taste, smell and feel of the present. Asan analogy, we may experience a combination of sensations of reality to whichwe attribute the form and identity of arose. W e may perceive this form, thisrose, a number of times; yet upon eachoccurrence it is considered an experienceof the present. All other experiences of the rose by comparison are placed in thecategory of the past. This causes theconception that there is a sequence toevents. Even an experience which isrecollected and is vivid is considered of the past in comparison to those perceptions which are the direct experience of the senses. The noticeable point is thata recollected experience may be as vividas an empirical one. Yet during awakened consciousness it is always

easily distinguished from the latter. Onthe other hand, dreams, as is commonlyknown, can be as realistic an experienceas one of the awakened state, and theyare not accompanied by the realization

that they are dreams. The factor fordetermining the difference between arecollected and empirical experience isthe reason. The reason subjects the sensations to analysis, and we are generallyconscious in an awakened state of thesense organs contributing to our perception. In the recollection of an experience there is that absence of consciousness of any one of the senses contributing impulses. The recollected experienceseems to be without motion. By inference, of course, we can conclude as tothe sense that particularly contributedthe impulses. But the sensations of arecollected experience cannot be easilyseparated. They remain as a complete unit.

 Therefore, memory experiences arepassive in contrast to an active experience of the senses. Because of theirpassivity they seem fixed and establish apoint from which all active experiencesseem to advance. Active experiences aresaid to be, therefore, of  the present, andthe passive ones of the  past. What then

accounts for the conception of futureevents? The future, we shall see, givesus another arbitrary fixed point, towardwhich consciousness seems to move. That which is not realized, of which weare not conscious, is said to be of thefuture. It is asserted to be a potentiality.It has no actuality. W e measure actuality by our empirical knowledge of it. There are, of course, many things whichby inference we assume have existence.But, practically speaking, it is generallyheld that which is not perceived has noexistence, at least to us, until we realize

it. The present never approaches thefuture as neither does the past approachthe present. The movement of events isin the present. The present again we seeis motion or action between two inertpoles, past and future. It is the condition of the present or experiencesrealized as of the present which seem todepart from the point of the past andadvance toward the pole of the future.It is quite logical that we should assumea future, even though it lacks actualexistence.

Relatively we, as previously stated,are conscious of two states, differing innature to perception. Perception is active and of the present. It is motion because consciousness is, as we have seen,

the excitation of an energy. In our dailyexperiences we believe we perceive staticor inert things or conditions. Theyseem so by approximation to others inmore rapid motion. W e, therefore, forma conception of inertia. In endeavoringto conceive that which cannot be perceived, in endeavoring to realize something beyond the present, we conceive afuture, we conceive a condition that isstatic, fixed, motionless, because it isalways of the same, unrealized; andsince it is unrealized, it is lacking in perception or motion. The future by suchreasoning, though in fact it has no existence, becomes an arbitrary, fixedpoint toward which our consciousness,our present realization of motion seemsto move.

Having denied the existence of a universe possessing the characteristic of inertia, we substitute one pervaded withmotion. The motion, therefore, must beconstant without intervals of rest. Thisdoes not deny variations of motion.Motion functions according to a scalewith a minimum and maximum of in

tensity. There never could be a periodof actual rest without the introductionof a state of inertia. If there existedconditions of inertia, there would be nounity to the universe, for where therewould be no motion there would benothing. The centers of motion thenwould be isolated one from another.What must we say of consciousness? Isnot that motion? Is it, however, motionindependent of the energy of all matter?

 The question properly framed is: Isconsciousness a motion having an ex

istence apart from the energy of whicheverything else is composed? W e must,of course, readily admit that all life is aphase of universal Cosmic motion. Butwhen life has been produced is the consciousness generated within the livingbeing independent of Cosmic motionexcept the motion of life? Broadlyspeaking, as long as consciousness asmotion is dependent upon the energy of life which animates the being that isconscious, it is dependent upon the universal or Cosmic motion. Yet, withfurther analysis we see that this would

permit consciousness, once havinggained existence, to parallel Cosmicmotion as a universal force. It wouldpermit consciousness to function independently of all Cosmic law inherent inmotion with the exception of life upon

which it is dependent. However, withthe removal of the faculties of sensewhich contribute to our objective consciousness, this consciousness takesflight. Our most common experience of this is when asleep or drugged. It isproclaimed, of course, that when oneloses the use of all sense faculties, therestill remains the consciousness of self,memory and imagination. This is true,but it has been proved only in the instances where all or some of the facultiespreviously existed. The impressions re

ceived antecedent to the loss of thefaculties engendered ideas— sensations,which were retained in memory andcontinued to actuate the consciousnessfrom within after the loss of the senses.W e wish to contend here that where ahuman would be born minus all thesense faculties, there could not exist thecomplex consciousness of a normal beingthat permits of reason, will, etc. Therewould be but the simple organic reactions to environment which are found inplants and lower organisms. Consequently, consciousness is not a motion

born in higher organisms independentof sensual things, but rather institutedby them. With the first realization of exterior stimula there originates consciousness. The first sensation we maysay imparts motion to the mind. A firstsensation may come from within as anintercoastal pain, for example. But this

 just excites simple consciousness or thesubjective consciousness by which everything is classified into two generalspheres— pleasure and pain. Summarily,the motion of consciousness arises fromstimula and is, therefore, not independent of Cosmic motion but dependentupon it. But the motion of consciousness even during a state of alertness, isit constant as we declare all other Cosmic motion to be ? It seems not. Thereappears to be gaps of undetected, unrealized exterior motion which causes us toisolate each realized impression. It is acommonly known psychological factthat we are capable of being consciousof but one thing at a time; though consciousness can vacillate so rapidly that

we seem to have awareness of severalthings at one time. Yet this group of sensations which may appear as one canbe distinguished from another singlesensation or group of sensations. W e,therefore, relegate sensations either to

the past or to the present in our experiences.

Accepting the view that all motion inthe universe apart from and surroundingus is constant, then why do we whennormal and alert seem to perceive aseparateness to reality and events whichare the consequent of motion? Foranalogy: Let us imagine someone pouring water slowly before us from onelarge vat into another. The water represents, as a further simile, Cosmic motion.Suddenly from a slow flow the water is

increased to a rushing flow. Have wethen two separate conditions withoutany relation? Was the water changedfrom the gentle to the rapid flow without an intermediate condition? Impossible. W e may have been merelyconscious of the first and last condition,but experience and reason inform us thatthe flow of the water progressed in speedfrom the slow to the rapid, but its progression was too sudden for us to becognizant of the intermediate state. Theprogression through the intermediatestate was too rapid to permit conscious

ness of it. In other words, there wasproduced a phase of motion more rapidthan the ability of the senses to perceiveit, and consequently there was a gap inconsciousness. On the other hand, if wewere equally conscious of the varyingchanges of the speed of the flow of thewater from the one tumbler into theother, we would not be cognizant of either the condition of slow or fast, butof just the whole gradual process of transition. There would be no appreciation of the gap between slow and fast.

 The realization would be, as said, of anentire process only. Thus it is with allsensual things. W e are not conscious of the constancy and unity of all motion.W e perceive one thing and then we perceive another, and we have no awareness of their change one into anotherexcept in the casual things where thechange can be perceived by the senses.

If all things are of motion, nothing ispermanent in form; and as has been saidby an eminent Greek philosopher, “ Allthings are constantly becoming some

thing else.” What the human consciousness perceives becomes real to it. Thatwhich remains unperceived has to thehuman consciousness no existence andconstitutes a gap in reality— a space.

 Thus all things humanly perceivedappear to have a separateness whichdoes not actually exist. That which constitutes the state of difference is the unperceived phase of Cosmic motion. Thisvoid is, therefore, Cosmic motion whichis beyond the range of sense perception.Each thing or reality when realized is of the present. Immediately before thething perceived of the  present was thevoid the interval when naught wasrealized, and before that again was thestate of realization; and from this

process impressions are given a sequenceby the consciousness which actually theydo not have. The sequence is as follows:Realization of reality, then of void, thenof reality again, etc. If it were not forthe illusion of a void or the hiatus of consciousness, we would have but arealization of just the immediate. Therecould not be a past as all impressionswould be continuous, and therefore,  there could not be established an arbitrary beginning.

Fundamentally, everything now discerned will be in existence in the future.

 This must not be misconstrued to meanthat the variations of form now perceived will have future existence, butbasically all cycles of Cosmic motion responsible for the forms we realize willcontinue. They cannot fail to do so, forthe destruction of any of them would beinterference with the entire order andharmony of the universe. They will bevaried by the minor laws previouslyexpounded, and this variation will produce forms not perceived at present, andundoubtedly abolish some now dis

cerned. The future is not determinedwith accuracy only because the variations of form, the result of the changeof the present order, is not known. Thefuture is generally the void immediatelysubsequent to the present consciousnessof reality because we do not comprehendthe order of the next change. If weknew the order of change we wouldhave realization of all possible forms,and thus actually be aware of the futureas emphatically at least as we are of thepresent. Where Cosmic motion hasbrought into manifestation things or

conditions which in turn become minorcauses or minor laws generally knownas natural phenomena which with regularity produce a modification of theCosmic motion, we can, if we become

aware of these causes or order, predictdefinite forms.

Briefly, when the minor order or lawsof the universe are learned, we canbridge the void following the presentstate of consciousness, and ascertainwhat we please to call a future. Assuming the permanency of gravitation, aminor law of the universe, we can predict into the future no matter  how distant that an object thrown above thesurface of the earth will return to it. Theextreme difficulty is that man is not able

to determine the exact order that willresult in the continuous creation of newforms by slightly varying Cosmic motion. In other words, there is no absolutepermanency to the minor laws, and withchange it is possible for a form nowrealized not to be realized a centuryor ten thousand years hence. Theavoidance, however, of intervention witha major cause would assure a definitefuture result. Man is as much a causeof the future as is nature, for he createsminor order or laws which eventuallyactualize into new forms which he

realizes. Through the process of reasoning, known as imagination, man takesthe elements of the reality he perceives,which is, we have seen, of the present,and combines them into ideals whichhave no reality insofar as his senses areconcerned and, therefore, are formless.In endeavoring to attain these ideals, acourse of action is pursued which putsman in opposition to the major law orCosmic motion. His opposition resultsin a variation of the Cosmic motionwhich in turn produces a certain order,

which order, if not interfered with, ultimately effectuates his ideal. When manrealizes his ideal, he has brought intoactual existence a law which has produced a result. He has created a future.Once he has established a law. if it canbe invoked uniformly it will alwaysproduce the same result. Man has notcreated anything new in the universe buthas merely varied Cosmic motion by hisactions. It, therefore, is more simple byfar for man to establish a future bybringing it into existence himself, that is.by establishing minor law and order

that makes it possible, than to endeavorto foresee all order in nature over whichhe has no absolute control or fails tocomprehend.

But returning to our issue— there isbut the present. This future, which we

have declared can be known throughcomprehending its foundational order, isbut an illusion. Let us first return againto the past. The intervals between eventsrealized or the hiatus of consciousnesslend a fictitious order to events. Allevents preceding that which is realizedare separated by the gaps of consciousness which become fixed points or a pastfrom which the active consciousnessseems to move forward. If, as we haveseen, that which is perceived is alwaysof the present, the interval before itsperception, before we are conscious of it, is a void, a state of the unknown; andthis state is static. It appears as a fixedpole designated as the future towardwhich we seem to move with our activeconsciousness.

When an ideal, we may hold, is subsequently realized, its order establishedand its manifestation perceived, it is athing or event of the present. Before

that it is also of the present but as adifferent sensation— and always of thepresent. If the order by which eventsof the present will change into otherswere known, there would be no unknown interval. W e would be conscious

of what is called future forms. Butactually our consciousness of the orderfrom which things would come, wouldbe consciousness of the present and.therefore, we would have no realizationof a future. From this we must deducethat there is but a present and the illusions of past and future are indicationsof the limits of the human consciousness.

W e are presumptuous enough to declare that there is but one fundamentallaw in the universe, and that fundamental law is motion. All else is theresult of the manifestation of that lawand which when opposing it, vary itsufficiently to produce the minor lawsand the multiplicity of forms which ourconsciousness creates. There is onlyone definite, fixed law— motion. All elseis a free agent; that is, it eventually, because of its nature, may have its orderchanged by opposition to the fixed, permanent law.

W ha t is truth? Truth and knowledge are not synonomous, for what is perce ivedtoda y and realized as knowledge may subsequently be rejected as false opinion. Onthe other hand, all knowledge is not opinion, although opinion may be the equivalen t ofknowledge. An opinion is merely a supposition founded upon antec edent experiences,not direc tly related to tha t which is considered, from which inferences are drawn.Kno wled ge is a conclusion, the result of syllog istical reasoning upon ex perie nce s had,which experiences d irectly pertain to the object of knowledge. Both knowledge andopinion depen d on human reason and perceptio n. They cannot exist apa rt from it. Their accu racy is relative. W ith the chan ge of reason and perception knowledge and opinion

either endure longer or are rejected. A s the illusions of the senses and imperfe ction ofreason persist with time, so does that which is now considered knowledge and whicheventually will be found false.

That upon which knowledge and opinion are founded is truth, for it has existence apartfrom eithe r of the forme r. Tha t which exists in its own right does not inten tionallydeceive and therefore it is always of its own nature, either to be known rightly or not.All that which is the cause of man's perception and that which causes him to form con-ceptions, is truth, but the perception and conception are not truth unless they be theexact p ortra yal of the ir cause. Truth is absolute reality, but the human consciousness isnot cap able of embra cing in its entirety an absolute reality. Truth to man is thereforea relative and arbitrary conception of an absolute reality.
