THOUGHT OF THE MONTHPLEA FOR COMMON SENSE

Hom m o n   sense is the realis-tic approach to anv givencircumstance. This real-

ism is whatever appearsobvious to the average intelligence.  Sometimesit requires the analysisof what may be a newexperience; a t other

limes, il is but the recoiled ion of what previous experience has shown to be best under similar conditions. Commonsense, then, necessitates a rational sur-vey of the problems and events of liferather than an emotional reaction toI hem. A guide for an individual, or a people, along the course of life should

 be: Think your way along!More and more there is evidence ofmass emotionalism. People choose sidesand act. many believing that their adsare the consequence of personal con-clusions. Their actions arc (if one canimpartially disassociate oneself fromthem) principally motivated by anemotional stimulus. A conception, asa plan or program, is extended to them, but it is colored by a highly appealingset of circumstances which arouses sym- pathetic ('motional response within theindividuals to whom it is made. I hey

falsely believe that the gratificationthey experience is indicative of theirintellectual approval.

Another way of saying the samething is that everything that pleasesus is not necessarily sound or beneficial.How many limes have you been tempt-ed to buy something because of its eyeappeal, its packaging, or its intriguingcomplexity only to find later that itwas not a good buy economically andnot as enjoyable as first imagined?

Much of the world’s increasing distressis due to this sensationalism and lackof individual common sense.

Of paramount importance is the con-struction of individual concepts. Whatdoes the average man or woman con-ceive as the summum bonum in lifethat is. the highest good?  What achieve-ment for him. and as well for the so

ciety of which he is a part, would heconsider the greatest attainment in lift*?Il is patent that with many millionsof persons throughout the world, per-sonal survival is the dominant thought.This is a primary motivation. All menare united by such a biological factor.The principal disunity among men

arises after   the requirements of s u s tenance have been met.

The same drive which impels mento seek food and shelter may manifestitself psychologically also the first phase being preservation of self, thesecond phase being the expression <.j self.  The ego must be nourished as wellas the body. To feel a nonentity, alleast to oneself, is as distressing as trying to exist physically against obstacles.In other words, starvation of self is as

grievous as starvation of the bodv. Thegratification of self is found in the rec-ognition of personal effort. The egolives in the* consciousness of its single ness.  Men may act collectively, butonly when they think that they aremaking some wholly personal contribu-tion in doing so. This expression ofself is found in the desire for fame and power, both of which are relative. Tin*fame may not extend beyond a fewadmirers, those whom Ihe individual

exceeds in some capacity, or function;the power may mean but a limitedauthority in some equally limited ca-

 pacity. Nevertheless, if you rob menof these gratifications you cause them

to have an acrimonious view of life, or,at least, make them miserable.It is well stated that happiness  is

nothing more than pleasure of bodyand of self. The highest good, then, asstated the ancient Cyrenaics, is pleas-ure, but not alone sensual pleasure. Itis the misconception of the notion of pleasure that leads to the individual’sdissatisfaction. It is the conception tha tthe luxuries which satiate the senses,including one’s ease from labor, are thefinal end to be attained. Emphasis is

 placed upon a state or a social idealwhich promises to provide the means by which such things may be realized.In the course of such living, the selfremains ungratified. The individualcomes to believe that he is expressingself in his pursuit of the particularswhich bring pleasure to the senses. Thisresults in the race for a quantity  ofthings, the quantity falsely seeming tosymbolize the self’s latent desire forsupremacy.

Today we are sacrificing the pleasurewhich is to be derived from the exercise

of creative ability. The bringing forthof something with one’s hands or mind,as a product of one’s powers, beneficial-ly exalts the ego. It is a satisfactionequal to any sensuous pleasure. Thereis not a man or woman who has everreceived sincere commendation forsomething achieved who would ex-change that experience for any momen-tary appeal to the senses. The glow ofthe realization of something well done,of the employment of the powers ofself, lingers on long after a physical

 pleasure has diminished.One of the principal dangers in ourmodem and often alluded to as prog-ressive society is its curtailment of

 personal expression. On the one hand,the high degree of regimentation,

 brought about by intense industrializa-tion, and the prevailing labor relationsgenerally prevent the opportunity ofrealizing personal achievement to thegratification of self. On the other hand,the individual ego is being subordinatedto the collective ideal of sufficiency and  efficiency.  These latter two—namely,

sufficiency and efficiency—are being in-terpreted by science and by society interms of leisure and the negative pleas-ure of escaping from effort.  It is thisvery starvation of the ego that makes

the masses victims of sensationalism.There comes about a substitution oftheir own selfexpression in favor ofsome ideal that is foisted upon them.More or less by proxy, they find pleas-ure in the inflated fame and power ofsome individual, or the artificial entityof an ideology. They thri ll to a sym- pathetic satisfaction which does notarise out of the exercise of their ownabilities or talents. They seek the re-flection of greatness and of powerwhich does not truly represent theimage of their own intellect or faculties.

 Not every man can be worldrenownedor a dominant power in some sphereof activity. He can, however, be en-couraged to cultivate pride of personalachievement. He should, and must be,encouraged to accomplish somethingwhich represents the best part of what-ever capabilities he has, no matter howsimple. Man must again find satisfac-tion in pride of self, not just in theease  of self. Common sense will not

 perm it a flattery of the ego. Such flat-tery is but a substitution of another’sevaluation for our own. Each of usknows when he has really achieved.We set our own goal of personal enter-

 prise, the thing to be realized. In ti-mate experience, then, tells us bestwhether or not that which we havedone is equivalent to what we had con-ceived for ourselves.

 M a s * E n t e r t a i n m e n t

A great obstacle to the expression ofself is the current mass entertainmentwhich invades not just the sanctity of

the home, but the sanctity of one’sselfconsciousness as well. In the Unit-ed States, for example, few have timeto be conscious of the creative urge,the desire to express self because somany are continually kept off balance by the stimulus of extraneous appeal.Television and radio are two of theworst offenders. They continually ex-trovert the individual, keeping him out-side himself. The programs are a suf-ficient palliation to make it seem thatany selfstimulus is either unnecessaryor dull by comparison. The habit of

indulgence of these extraneous appealsis formed and then true individualityis lost.

By such methods as these the massesare controlled and utilized by those

relatively few whodo

  exercise theirnatura l abilities and powers. They arethe ones who dominate. In doing sothey may, as history has shown, cometo set personal ends, which may behighly dangerous to that individualfreedom of which most men are con-tinually prating. If this be doubted, itis necessary only to consider the everincreasing confusion of personalitieswith the issue of  principles.  People ve-hemently choose sides in their like ordislike of the conduct of a personality.They prefer to discuss the trivialities of 

ersonal appeal—the stage often havingeen intentionally set to make such an

appeal to their emotions — 2 'ather thanto consider the issues involved. Hadthe minds of most been accustomed, byexperience, to an individual  appraisalof events, they would distinguish thevital factors concerned. Only the onewho has conceived an ideal in his own personal life and who has striven toattain such an end knows how   im-

 portan t it is to follow a sequence ofevents rationally to their logical con-clusion. Such a person is not likelyto become entangled in emotional appeals.

If common sense is realism, then letus begin being realists for the futurewelfare of mankind.

Interplanetary Travel THE DYNAMICS OF SPACE FLIGHT

True interplanetary flight may be broken down into three separate stages.First, the escape from Earth, the at-tainment of the necessary 112 km/sec.[7.0 mi./sec .]. A spaceship whichachieved this, although it would neverreturn to Earth [unless it were redi-rected], would still be moving roundthe Sun in an orbit almost identicalwith the Earth’s and so would neverapproach any of the planets. It would,therefore, have to be steered into  theorbit which would lead it to the planetof destination—which means, in fact,altering its velocity in the appropriatemanner. To fix ideas, it will be helpfulto consider the journey to Venus, whichis the shortest, though not the easiest, ofall interplanetary voyages.

Any ellipse or hyperbola with the

Sun at one focus which crossed the or- bits of Earth and Venus would be a pos-sible path for a spaceship; but it willnot be the most economical one, i. e.the one which takes the greatest ad-vantage of the initial velocities of the planets. This [optimum] path will bethe ellipse touching both planetary or- bits. A simple calculation shows thatquite a small change in velocity—a re-duction of the initial orbital speed byabout 10%—would enable the space-ship to fall in towards the Sun so that

its path became tangent to that ofVenus. This alteration of speed wouldrequire the operation of the motors foronly about 1 minute; thereafter theship would drop inwards from theEarth’s orbit to reach that of Venus146 days later. Because it had gainedspeed in its fall towards the Sun, it

would swing out again until it had re-turned to its original distance. If, how-ever, its speed were cut by another10% while it was passing Venus itwould then have the appropriate veloc-ity for this distance from the Sun, andwould continue to travel in the sameorbit as Venus.

It will be seen that the velocitiesneeded to make these transfers fromone orbit to another are quite smallcompared with the velocity needed toescape from Earth. Indeed, they arewell within the range of presentday

rockets. A V2 starting in the Earth’sorbit could reach Venus with full pay-load!

The actual landing on Venus wouldinvolve rocketbraking against the plan-et’s gravitational field from a distanceof a few thousand kilometres, and pos-sibly the use of hypersonic glides inthe upper atmosphere. The Germantheoreticians believed that the wholeenergy of approach to a planet withatmosphere could be dissipated by airresistance, through a series of grazing

contacts, but this will not be certainuntil a good deal more is known aboutflight in the ionosphere at Mach num- bers of 20 and more. [A Mach is aunit of speed, taking the velocity ofsound in air as 1. At sea level, a Mach

number of 1 equals about 770 m i. /hour.]The return journey from Venus

would be identical in its duration andin the velocities required to make theorbital changes. Needless to say, itwould be necessary to wait on Venusuntil the two planets came into the cor-rect relative positions again. Unfortu-nately this waiting period would be470 days, so that the complete roundtrip would last justover two years, thoughless than half this timewould be spent inspace.

The journey to Marswould be very similar,except that in thiscase it would be neces-sary to increase theship’s speed, once  ithad escaped from theEarth, to enable it togo further away fromthe Sun and reach theorbit of Mars about

250 days later. Theenergy required for the trip, with land-ing, is considerably less than in thecase of Venus, owing to the lowergravity of Mars. With the necessarywaiting period on Mars, the total timefor the round trip would be about twoyears eight months.

One very interesting orbit existswhich enables one to reach both Marsand Venus and to get back to Earthin less time, and with less power, thanthe journey to either   planet by itself.

In this case the ship would go out to-wards Mars along a semiellipse as be-fore, but instead of landing on the

 planet would spend a few weeks circlingit and taking observations. At the ap- propriate time the ship would breakaway from the Martian orbit and dropin along another ellipse to Venus,which it would again circle for a fewweeks before increasing its speed to re-turn to Earth. The total duration ofthis remarkable voyage would be ex-actly 18 months.

All these times would be very great-ly reduced if more elongated ellipses,or hyperbolae, were used for the voy-ages concerned, but unfortunately theincrease in energy needed for such journeys over the most economical ones

is very great indeed. They would not be possible un til some fairly efficientform of nuclear propulsion was avail-able. In this case, the transi t times tothe nearer planets would be only afew weeks and they could be visited atany time. Orbits of this kind would beessential to reach the outer planets,since the most enthusiastic of explorerswould hardly be prepared to face fiveor ten years in the somewhat cramped

quarters of a space-ship.

These gravitationalorbits around the Sunall have in commonthe fact that once theinitial velocity of thespaceship has beencorrectly achieved, therest of the voyage fol-lows au tom atic allywithout any more ef-fort, apart from oc-casional small naviga-tional corrections. Re-cently, however, a new

idea has appearedwhich must be mentioned briefly asit will probably play an important part in the later development of as-tronautics, and also brings it more intoline with conventional forms of trans- port.

The theoretical studies that have been made of atomic propulsion forspaceships have indicated rather strong-ly that it may not be possible to obtainfrom nuclear reactors the enormousthrusts which chemical rockets can

 provide, bu t that instead they will beable to produce small thrusts over longeriods of time. Large thrusts areowever only needed to lift the ship

away from the Earth: once orbital ve-locity has been achieved, and the Earthcan no longer pull the ship back, thesmallest of thrusts will give as largea terminal speed as necessary, if it can

 be maintained for a long enough periodof time. Instead of accelerations of sev-eral gravities for a few minutes, thoughtis now being concentrated on “milli

gravities” maintained for hours or days.A recent theoretical study of such“powered orbits,” which formed a Mas-ter’s Thesis at the Massachusetts In-stitute of Technology, has even sug-

gested that some of them would bemore economical than the tangent el-lipses discussed earlier.

Such orbits, followed under verysmall but continuous thrusts, woulddepart completely from the simpleconic sections traversed by freely mov-ing bodies in the Sun’s gravitationalfield. They would mean, also, that thenavigator would be busy throughoutthe whole of the voyage and would not be able to retire to his quarters to readthrough some rewarding work, withonly an occasional glance at the calen-

dar. Contimious positionfinding would be necessary, and some intricate cal-culations would be required to correctany deviations from course. When thelowthrust, longduration “ion rockets”arrive, the happy days of dead reckon-ing interplanetary flight will be over!

S . t t e n d e z v o n s in S p a c e

So far it has been assumed that anyspacejourney to another planet willstart from the surface of the Earth.Technical reasons in connection withrocket design and the energy content

of known or possible fuels now makeit virtually certain that this will not be the case. Instead, what have beencalled “orbital techniques” will be em- ployed, and these may introduce inter-esting and important navigational prob-lems.

It has already been explained thata rocket reaching a speed much lessthan that required for an interplanetary journey would continue to circle theEarth indefinitely with no further ex- penditure of power. In the nottoo

distant future, it will be possible to build rockets which can do this with asmall payload, but their fuel supplieswould be almost exhausted once theyhad reached orbital speed. However,after sending one rocket up into an or-

 bit near the Earth , others could be piloted up into the same orbit and thentheir excess fuel transferred to thefirst machine. Alternatively, of course,a second rocket could make the tripover and over again until the first had

 been refuelled. The analogy withflightrefuelling in the air is rather ex-

act: although the orbiting spaceshipswould be travelling at about 18,000m.p.h. with respect to the Earth below,they would be at rest relative to eachother and men and equipment could

 be transferred without difficulty. Thisoperation would be all the simpler be-cause of the apparent absence of weight.

Such orbitalrefuelling would makeit possible to reach the Moon and plan-ets with propellants of the type we possess today, and is therefore of funda-mental importance. Clearly it requiresnavigation of a rather high order,though the requirements are not asfantastic as may (at first sight) bethought. All tha t is necessary is thatthe two rockets should be brought towithin 10 or 20 miles of each other,with a velocity difference of perhapsless than 100 m.p.h. Since both ma-chines would then be floating freelyin space, very small steering jets couldmake possible the final rendezvous.

“Homing” on an orbital spacestationwould involve similar techniques. Al-though a Canadian critic of interplan-etary flight has called this sort of op-eration a “trapeze act,” it has the greatadvantage—which terrestrial perform-ers might well envy—that it does notmatter a great deal if you miss the

first time. You can always go aroundand try again.The problem of steering is simply

one of vector1composition: to alter themachine’s velocity—in whatever refer-ence system was being employed—onewould have to compound it with asmaller velocity approximately at rightangles to its existing one. This wouldinvolve orientating the rocket in thecorrect direction, and firing the motorsfor the required period of time (a fewseconds at the m ost). It must be realizedthat, in space, the attitude or orienta-tion of a rocket has no relation at allto its actual velocity vector: for ex-ample, the V2 travelled sideways overa considerable part of its trajectory.

There are two ways in which theturning of the spaceship might be ef-fected. One involves the use of smalltangential steering jets—a techniquewhich has been adopted in the latest1  Vec tor: A mathematical term used in evaluating those

qualities or conditions in Nature which possess the pr op er tie s of dir ec tio n as we ll as ma gn itu de . Fo rces,velocities, and displacements are thus “ vector” quan ti-ties, whereas temperatures, volumes, and energy levelsare not, and are designated as “ scalar” quantities.

highaltitude United States rocket “Vi-king.” Alternatively, gyroscopes or theirequivalents could be used, since rotat-ing a flywheel inside a rocket wouldcause the machine to turn in the op-

 posite direction. A freely suspendedgimbal system, which could be cagedat the appropriate point, would makeany threedimensional orientation ofthe ship possible.

Since the moments of inertia of aspaceship about its axes would be verylarge, the turning time might be of theorder of minutes, but this is not of anyimportance since one would have hours,if not days, in which to carry out anymanoeuvre. During the critical mo-ments of the ascent or descent in a planet’s gravitational field, all the nec-

essary directional control would be pro-vided, as in the V2, by the deflectionof the main jet.

There are many variations of the or- bital refuelling idea which have been proposed and which will probably beused in practice. For example, a tre-mendous saving in the amount of fuelrequired for a lunar journey would be possible if, instead of taking the fuelfor the return trip down to the Moon’ssurface and lifting it up again, it wasleft, in suitable containers, to circle

the Moon until the time came for thereturn voyage. The departing rocketwould then take off from the Moon,enter the same orbit as its fuel tanks,reattach them, and then head forhome. Since in rocket design we arealways fighting exponential laws," the

reductions in mass made possible bysuch operations would be spectacular:they might well bring the fuel require-ments for a particular mission downfrom millions of tons to a few thou-sand.

Here again, navigation would be allimportant. This seems an obvious casefor radar beacons, which in free spacewould have ranges of scores of thou-sands of miles. Also, most of the re-quirements for navigation between theEarth and Moon might be met, as faras automatic missiles were concerned, by some kind of radio grid or lattice produced by stations on the Earth , the phasing being arranged so that the sys-tem remained fixed with respect to theEarthMoon line.

In trying to restrict these remarksto the navigational aspects of space-flight, a great deal has necessarily

 been taken for granted. In particular,distinctions have not been drawn be-tween those problems for which engi-neering solutions already exist, andthose for which no final answers are asyet available. It can be said, however,that no new fundamental knowledge isrequired to carry out the operations

that have been discussed: the necessarytechniques already exist in variousstages  of development. No  doubt dis-coveries will be made in the futurewhich will transform many of our present ideas, but the foundations have been laid and the job ahead is merelystraightforward engineering develop-ment, though development on the verylargest and most expensive scale.

 biology th rows m uchlight on the problemsfacing humanity today.What these laws, con-trolling the manifoldaspects of life, revealis amazing. One theme,unified and progressive,threads itself through

the maze of a varietyof forms in expression.It runs like a musical phrase throughout a great symphony:First, the simple tune or melody which,taken up by instrument after instru-ment, is repeated with constant vari-ation and increasing intricacy until thewhole becomes a harmony of tran-scendent beauty.

The simple theme is found in thelowest forms of plant and animal life.It is repeated with variation in progres-

sive complexity through evolving livesand forms until it culminates in a sym- phony of being in man himself. There ,repeated within his own body, it cul-minates in a harmony producing art,learning, creative mind, and embodiedsoulconsciousness.

A drop of fresh pond water placedunder the microscope reveals manyminute forms of life, plant and animal,consisting of single cells or groups ofcells. The simplecelled animal or

 plant is composed of a mass of pro-toplasm, living substance, within whichis a central point of energy, or sourceof power and even life itself, for with-out this nucleus the remaining proto- plasm dies.

Each of these cells performs as anindependent being all of the necessaryfunctions of life. It reacts to its envi-ronment both positively and negatively, protects itself, moves, reproduces it-self, takes in oxygen and food, useswhat is essential to it and gives off thethe waste, thereby growing and main-taining its life.

One of the simplestof these forms is theam oeb a, singlecelled,without even a cell wall,maintaining its identityand life by the adhesionand cohesion of its liv-ing particles. The massof pro to pl as m flowsw i thou t pe rmanen tshape from one place

to another. This is in-dividuality as a singleunit.

In the drop of water, too, is anothertype of life, the paramecium. It, too,is singlecelled but with a definiteshape, a cell wall, and “organs” ofspecialized protoplasm. Of the manyforms of plant and animal life foundin a drop of fresh water, each havingseparate existence, one, which comes

 before our vision, is unique. It is a ball of cells rolling over and over

through the water. Its cells are ar-ranged around a hollow space, each

Eerforming its functions necessary tofe, possessing two long whiplike pro-

 pellers which lash the water to keepit on its way. Each cell, however, hasgiven up its separate existence to joinwith the many as a colony or group,sending through the mass a networkof tiny pulsing threads of protoplasmflowing from one cell to another. Be-cause of this, the tiny whips or flagellado not move at each cell’s impulse, butin unison, subordinating some individ-ual  freedom for   the good of the colonyas a whole.

This group of cells forming a hollow ball is a forerunner: Its organization,shape, the coordination of its cells, setthe pattern of evolving life. It is theVolvox. By the ascending groups andforms of nature in her various king-doms, this theme of specialization isrepeated with everincreasing complex-ity until it culminates in the body ofman. In man, the whole story is toldagain from beginning to end in the

Gradually, through the passage oftime in the struggle toward selfconsciousness, groups of cells have becomespecialized into tissues and organs, per-forming their tasks, doing the workthey have learned to do best. Theyhave given up their freedom and in-dependent existence, their autonomy.They are dependent upon the othercells and organs for their sustenance,even for life itself. Yet each is a unitor entity containing its central pointof power and life although modified toform bone and muscle, blood and skin,root and stem, leaf and flower and seed.This coordinated cosmos of life cul-minates in the human to house a con-scious living soul with a mind and body

forming a unit in a greater organism,humanity, the great colonial Volvox.

It is interesting to know that eachspecies, composed of its separate livingunits, also becomes a colonial being,each species existing as a unit in the

 body of nature. Man the human Vol-vox, or colony, has become the fourth

kingdom in nature. This developingcolony has not yet fully coordinatedits individual parts to make a unifiedwhole. But as it attains this unification,it will in turn become a unit withinthe body of a greater Being. “Volvox”the microcosm will become tlie fifthkingdom, a unit in the body of themacrocosm.

 Nations are but organs of the colo-nial body of man, organs specializedfor service to the whole; races are butdifferent tissues within that body.When one group revolts and refuses tocarry on its specialized duties, orstrives to take over control of all, acancerous growth results. If this is notremoved, or purified, tlie colony itselfis destroyed, and tlie abnormal growth

with it. Nature plays the theme again and

again, weaving the melody into a mag-nificent harmony, repeating withineach instrument and as a whole the pattern and the plan, so that it mightnever be lost. Man may in time learnto profit by nature’s revelations.

Since thousands of readers of the  Rosicrucian Digest   have not read many of theearlier articles of our late Imperator, Dr. H. Spencer Lewis, we adopted the editorial policy of pu blishing each mon th one of his ou tstand ing artic les, so th at his thou gh ts

would continue to reside within the pages of this publication.

Th r o u g h o u t   the worldthere are thousands, yeshundreds of thousandsseeking for Truth and forthe laws underlying andgoverning life in general,who are wandering aboutfrom sect to sect, cult to

cult, never finding in fullthat which they seek. These peoplewill not enter into, or become affiliatedwith, any secret organization whereinthey might find the truths, simply be-cause they refuse to connect themselveswith anything that is kept private orhidden from the multitude. Althoughthis is not a lecture on secret societies,it is necessary to consider such societies,in order that we may the better com- prehend that which is to follow.

Those who refuse to affiliate with

anything that is of a secret nature, doso because they feel that knowledge, ifit is worth while should be given freelyto the world. They ask, “If the knowl-edge taught is good and that whichwill uplift humanity, why then is itkept secret from all except those whoare initiated?” In my answer lies the

 positive proof that such a question isasked only by those who are not will-ing to make some conscious effort forthat which they would receive.

Throughout all ages, truths—greattruths—have been veiled, but not

clothed to hide them from the mind;for truth, like diamonds in a mass ofnursing soil, must be extracted fromthe facts which form its womb and life.Facts alone do not make a truth; they but give truth a strength, and fromcountless facts a truth may come.Truth is not for all to see, sense, or

understand, until with heart and soulattuned the inner man is set free. Sure-ly we cannot ask the Great Divide to

 bridge a path for us; we cannot hopeto pierce the veil or apprehend God’smind save through our own efforts tofirst learn the simple steps.

Take the Bible—acclaimed to be thegreatest mystical book ever written,setting forth the great truths of theuniverse . . . a book among books, openand free for all to read, holding out toall the world its Divine Laws and

Principles—not accessible to only achosen few, but accessible to all whocare to read—and yet how many readand understand? The Bible is the mostsecret, and at the same time, the mostopen book ever written. True, its greattruths are veiled, but not veiled sothickly that the veil cannot be pierced!Why then do so few understand it?

The answer is simple: The majorityof people will not   take the time,thought, and conscious effort necessaryto pierce the veil and disclose the greattruths. “There is a K e y ”  they cry; “a

Key  we must first have before we mayunderstand.” Even so, there are many books readily obtainable which con-tain the keys, but where are the multi-tudes who thereby obtain the keys?Lecture after lecture is written on the

Bible, delivered, and published but howmany seekers attend or read suchlectures?

Take that secret organization knownas Freemasonry, for example. It isclaimed that Masonry contains manylaws and principles which are keptsecret, and revealed only to its initiates.

 Not being a member of this augustfraternity, I do not know just what itcontains or what it reveals, but it isevident that it must hold and revealsomething worth while, else it wouldnot be the powerful organization weknow it to be. However, if Masonryheld every law and principle, if it re-vealed ways and means whereby itsmembers could use such knowledge soas to perform socalled miracles, etc.,it would be of no avail to scatter itsknowledge to the world; for in suchcase the multitudes would listen, ex-

 pecting something very wonderful, andnot being prepared to receive the greattruths in their simplicity, they wouldturn aside.

Take, again, the Rosicrucians—known

to possess and teach so many of thesecret laws and principles which, onceknown and put into practice, enableman to live as his Creator intended.What if this great fraternity shouldscatter its teachings broadcast, givethem openly and freely to all theworld? Few, indeed, would listen, few-er would understand, and fewer yetwould put them into practice and thusreap their benefits. Yet the Rosicru-cian teachings are not hidden; they areaccessible to all who ask with a sincereheart. Why, then, do not the majoritywho seek truth take advantage of theseteachings? Simply because they mustgive of their time and energy in orderto absorb and understand such teach-ings, and that is what they will not do!

W h e r e t o S e ek

Man, in his search for Truth, has become so entangled in the maze ofouter complexities that he will not al-low himself to listen to and understandthe inner simplicities. He seeks every-where, hoping to find without   the an-

swer which should come to him fromthe silent voice within.

The inner man conquers all when permitted to conquer; it asks for noth-ing, but offers all, and seeks but Godfor Power; it waits for man to break

the chains and open the door throughwhich it may pass from within to mas-ter and conquer; it reaches out intoCosmic space and uses the finer forces;it creates life in every cell; it senseswhen and where the evil is and findsits strength in Love.

How then shall this inner man befreed, unchained? What God has givenmust be holy—how comes it to be fet-tered, imprisoned, and kept unmani-fest? What greater problem faces manthan this most personal one?

Let us take another example of secre-cy before going into the heart of oursubject—the teachings and works ofChrist. Knowing well the power of theinner self, Christ asked but faith fromhis followers; for he knew that theycould not understand the laws and prin-ciples underlying his works. He didknow, however, that through faith theywould be enabled to carry  on. HadChrist openly revealed the laws and

 principles, those who were unpreparedand unworthy would, of course, haveattempted to do the same things and,failing, would have laughed and mockedhim.

This would have been very detrimen-tal, and the same thing would havehappened as in the case of the boy andthe magician: The lad had been watch-ing the magician perform a very mys-tifying trick, and asked to be shownhow it was done. When, however, thelad tried to perform the trick, hecouldn’t do it. After making several at-tempts without success, he turned tothe magician and exclaimed: “I knew

it couldn’t be done!”Christ then, would have been in thesame position as was the magician inthe eyes of the lad. Had he explainedthe simple laws and principles, every- body would have tried to do the sameas Christ did. Because of their utterunpreparedness, failure would have been the result.

From records and experience welearn that the great truths can be heldonly as secret and sacred. If those whoknow them are to do the most good,

they must work in secrecy and withoutrevealing what they know of the lawsto those who are unprepared to receivesuch knowledge. “Cast not your pearls before swine” would be better under-stood if it were worded: “Cast notyour great truths before unpreparedthought.” This holds good no matterhow you may view it, and you willcome to know that the great truths areunderstood only by those who areworthy, through being properly pre-

 pared to receive them, and, always mis-understood by those who are not so prepared.

G o d , T h e G r e a t S e c r e t

God, in his infinite wisdom, alone possesses all of the truth and law ofthis great power called secrecy,  for Godis ever the most Secret of Secrets, neverto be beheld by mortal man and onlyto be revealed through the inner andimmortal man, for were God to revealhimself to the eyes of the profane, orouter man, he would soon be looked up-on as an impossibility because of hisvery simplicity.

The power of secrecy—the great,mystical, and socalled magical powerof secrecy—is ever present within usall. It is a power which once knownand practiced will change the entire

life of a person, the conditions sur-rounding him, including his spmtualas well as material advancement. Itis the power through which all greatmen have risen—all big things have been accomplished, and all outwardand all inner advancement made.

The one and foremost thing in theminds of all is to become successful.It matters not what your idea of suc-cess may be—you have a certain goalto reach and when once you havereached that goal you will say, “I have

succeeded.” It may be that your ideaof success is to accumulate vast sumsof money in order to carry out some big scheme for the betterment of allconcerned; it may be you desire to at-tain success as an artist, an engineer,a musician, a sculptor; or you may de-sire to devote your life to the serviceof humanity, but are prevented throughcertain circumstances. Whatever yourgoal may be, you must attain that goal before you can become a success.

How, then, are vou to reach yourgoal? Through hard work? People are

working hard every day of their lives—working conscientiously and doing theirlevel best, yet few of them are success-ful or have reached their goals. Bysaving your pennies? The savings bankscany thousands of accounts of peoplewho are thrifty, yet few of them areany nearer success today than theywere twenty years ago. By studyinghard and absorbing all the knowledgeyou can? What becomes of the thou-sands of college graduates who have attheir finger tips vast and valuableknowledge? Look around you andyou’ll find some of them holding posi-tions which pay just enough to afforda living, some are unable to secure a

 position, and some are dismal failures.By planning and scheming? Talk to

the failures, and in nearly every caseyou will find them to have plans andschemes which, although they may beworkable enough and have been used to bring success to some, have broughtthem nothing.

 No, success is not to be won throughany of these methods alone. True, itrequires a certain amount of work,knowledge, thrift, planning, and schem-ing to ultimately win success, but withthat alone you will utterly fail to reachyour goal. All these things are useless

unless you have the great power be-hind them.The whole of the universe is based

upon the one great law underlying this power of secrecy. Throughout all theworld there is not one person who cantell us what God is, for God is a secretto man. Not one person can tell ushow the smallest blade of grass is cre-ated; for that, too, is a secret. Wereall the secret laws of the universe to berevealed, man would, in his egotism,attempt to do better work than God;and so it would come to pass that theuniverse would be in a bad state. There-fore, God and the laws of God mustof necessity be kept secret.

True, there are millions of socalledteachers ready and waiting to tell uswhat God is, just as there are scientistsready to tell us what a blade of grassis. They know, and we know, tha tgrass is made up of molecules havingcertain chemical constituents, and thatthese molecules are composed of atoms,the atoms composed of electrons, etc.; but the how and why of electrons com

 bining to form atoms, the atoms to formmolecules, and the molecules to formthe blade of grass, giving it its colorand form, is a secret and ever shall re-main so to the outer egotistical man.

The inner man, however, the only

real part of man, can and does knowthe secret of creation, for he utilizesthis secret at every opportunity. Did Inot state that the inner self reachesout into Cosmic space and uses thefiner forces, and that it creates life inevery cell? In order to possess the power and ability to create things, itmust also possess the secret of that power. Therefore, the inner self canaccomplish his desire if that desire isin keeping with the law and order ofthe universe itself.

The socalled mind of man, that isthe outer, objective mind of man, isnothing in itself, because it is the Godmind, the inner mind, that creates andmakes manifest all things. Man, in hisoutward manifestation is nothing buta mere machine, or medium, for the

 purpose of carrying out the directionsof the inner man; but because the outerman has the right to choose and do ashe pleases to a certain extent, througha will of his own, he mistakes this for

 power. He assumes that he, too, cancreate and so he sets himself apart from

all else. It is in such manner that theouter man separates himself from theinner man and comes to know failure.He refuses to commune with and lis-ten to the inner voice and thus allowthat inner self to create and completethat which is desired by the outer self.

It is through mental activity that wecome to know tha t we live. Throughthis same activity we conceive ideas,make plans, and decide how and whenthese ideas and plans are to be mademanifest. All our ideas, plans, and ac-

tions are conceived, created, and direct-ed by the inner self—and sent forthto be made manifest through the medi-um of physical operations. Thus youcome to conceive of an idea, make your

 plans accordingly, and then carry themout to their ultimate conclusion, whichis either success or failure—success ifyou allow the inner man to work un-interfered with by the outer man.

The best way to arrive at your goalof success is along the line of least re-sistance. Your inner self has given you

the idea of what success means to you,and the goal has been set. You want  to

 become successful; and, therefore, youmust do only those things which willmake you successful. You ask, “Whatare those things?” and here we find

ourselves bordering on and delving intothe very heart of the power of secrecy.The instructions come to your   objec-

tive mind through the promptings orimpulses sent forth by the inner mind.You must listen to, heed, and followthese promptings to the last detail ifyou wish to succeed. You must notallow your outer or objective mind tointerfere and do the things which op- pose your inner promptings, nor to setaside such promptings until a latertime, for the inner self knows best whatto do and just wThen the proper time isat hand to do it.

S i le n c e C o n s e r v e s E n e r g y

You must also do one other thing—a simple thing in one way, but verydifficult in another. That thing whichyou must do is to keep silent!  Be secre-tive about your plans and the thingsyou intend doing, for only in this waymay you hope to possess the necessarymental energy which will carry youto your goal. Tell no one. Communeonly with yourself, for in the very tell-ing of your plans you are using themental energy you will need to carrythem out. Secrecy means conservationof mental energy—the energy which isnecessary for success.

To illustrate how secrecy conservesand stores up mental energy, let us takethe ordinary dynamo—that machinewhich is used to generate electricity.The dynamo will generate electricalenergy only so long as it has another power behind it to drive it. Whenthat other power is taken away thedynamo is lifeless, so to speak. As long

as the dynamo is driven we may securethe energy, and that energy may beutilized in many different ways. How-ever, if we  do not use it, the energygoes to waste, and if we do use  it, wemust use it as it comes from the dyna-mo. Once it is used it cannot be re-

 placed, except with new energy whichis just sufficient to furnish power forthe present needs. If we do not re-quire the energy at once, and find thatwe cannot always have the power be-hind the dynamo to generate the ener-

gy, we must store some of it to be usedwhen needed. We do this through themedium of a storage battery, and thuswhenever we need energy we have itat a moment’s notice.

The mind—the outer mind—of manmay be compared to the dynamo,and the inner mind with the power be-hind the dynamo.  problems or questions which physicalscience has not completely explained.Herein is the key to all other things,for without life all the bodily com-forts that man might possibly conceivewould mean nothing. A deeper significance to life than themere mastery of the physical universeis somewhat exemplified in man’s atti-tude toward existence. We are awedat the manifestation of an involvedmechanical process, but this awe is sim- plified and wonder is the response whenone beholds life itself. much of a chemical and physical na-ture that can be explained, but even ifwe can analyze this mechanical func-tion to the fullest extent, there still re-mains the underlying manifestation oflife, without which the mechanicalfunctioning of our bodies, or any other physical thing, would be of little im- portance. The fact is that mind is soclosely connected with being that with-out being there would not even be amentality to comprehend let alone ap- preciate the fine mechanical functionof various parts of the material world.

Wonder is expressed in all forms of being, but particularly in man andanimals do we find the expression ofwonder going deeper than mere curiosi-ty. Intelligent animals will changetheir expression and direct their atten-tion toward a thing or situation that is parallel at least to what man wouldconsider the feeling or emotion of won-der. To wonder is to bring about withinour consciousness an acknowledgementof the powers and forces that existabout us which we cannot fully under-stand, but the power of w'hich we canto a degree appreciate. The evidence oflife in a newborn child, the mainte-nance of life in an elderly individual,the buoyancy of life in youth or adult-

hood, are all manifestations wrhichmake us wonder concerning the typeof force which exists within and aboutus.

To w7onder about any phenomenonthat lies immediately beyond the graspof our explanation goes deeper thanthe innate characteristics of curiosity.It is truly one of the highest emotionswhich we are capable of expressing. It puts us in awe before a force whichseems so near and yet beyond ourgrasp. It is true tha t the accumulation

of knowledge through the history ofthe human race has caused some thingswhich previously had produced wonderto no longer do so in the light of actualexplanation; howrever, man in his pres-ent state of understanding and develop-ment is still awed at the forces thatcommonly express themselves in theuniverse: the seasons, storms, beautifulsunsets, and various catastrophes aswell as constructive events. The forcethat motivates these things is so muchgreater than man has ever conceived

of controlling that he is to an extent

unconsciously aware that the sourceof this force must be a power that liesnot only beyond his understanding, butalso beyond his control.

Wonder transcends doubt. We doubt

only after gaining knowledge. We can-not doubt a thing about which we knownothing. If man doubts the existenceof a force that causes him to live andcauses the universe to be, the reason isthat he has gained a certain amount ofknowledge explaining that force. Thosewho doubt God doubt not the powerand creative force that may be God;they doubt the explanations that have been given them of this force. We canwonder at any manifestation that im- presses itself upon our physical sensesor any fact or principle that comes into

consciousness, but wTe doubt only thevalidity of explanations. Being, thevery existence of life, does not arousedoubt—it arouses wonder. We wonderat this force that causes us uncon-sciously to continue to live, that rhyth-mically supplies the blood stream withoxygen and the vital life force—carriesit through the body and absorbs thenecessary physical necessities to main-tain that body. All these processes goon within us, and we wonder what theycan be and how they can continue.

Wonder is therefore a key to the in-finite. It is a small window throughwhich we are able to glimpse verysmall parts of infinite being. Just as aman in a dark cell might form distortedopinions of the external world throughthe limitations of his vision, so we formmany opinions—probably all somewhatdistorted—of the overall purpose of theuniverse, its infinite scheme. What wesee of it consists of the few glimpsesthat come when we pause and wonderat its very existence, at its manifesta-

tions. Therefore, in those momentswhen we are awed by a manifestationthat is a part of our environment or a part of life, we have an opening wedgetoward a greater understanding of theinfinite force that is and causes allthings to be. If we pause to add tothose moments another moment forcontemplation and for the possibilityof our reason to grasp the intuitiveurges which may at that time enterour minds, we may better round outour knowledge or experience and graspa small part of the meaning of life.

Every l iv ing th ingmust orient itself to thecosmic agencies of light,heat, fluidity, movement,

air, and gravity. Every living thingmust make its own additions, its ownway, and its own eliminations. Theuniversal end of life seems to be theurge to construct, to create, to grow.To do this there must be that some-thing we call energy.  The very firstefforts of life are to get energy. Wetiy to capture it, wre try to store it, wetry to release it. The struggle for ener-gy, the expenditure of it, and the everchanging expressions we call evolve- ment.

Resistance is one of the laws ofgrowth. The seed in the ground grows

 by pushing against the soil. We grow

 by learning to live harmoniously with-in the resistances of life, not by brush-ing them aside. Resistance is a cosmiclaw.

When the child develops in theuterus, it is very comfortable. All ofits wants are instantly supplied with-out any effort on the part of the child.It is warm; it can stretch and moveabout, and it is at peace. When itmakes its advent in the outer world,cool air strikes it; the want for airseizes it; it cries out vociferously, which

is just what is needed, for thereby thelungs expand, the flow of blood quick-ens in the blood vessels and stimulatesall the functioning of the body. Thisis the child’s first meeting of resistance.From here on, life should be and even-tually will be a matter of meeting re-sistance at every point. Whenever awant is felt, the child gives voice to it

 by an outcry, winch becomes its pray-er. The child soon learns that the morevociferously it utters the prayer, thesooner its wants will be supplied.When is the child to begin to leam thatresistance must be met and that thereis a law of action and reaction—causeand effect?

For several years the child has pres-ent a fond mother, a doting father, ora nurse or someone to do the magicstunts; this keeps the child from de-veloping a resistance to the resistanceof life. Later, the teacher performs themiracles wdth toys, pictures, plays, and pleasing things. The idea of teaching

seems to be not to give any resistanceto the efforts of the child. The childmust be allowed to jump from oneamusing thing to another. The mind,however, will never be keen until itmeets the resistance of other minds.Overprotectiveness allows no time or place for the evolvement of the childso he can meet the real resistances oflife.

As adults, we are too infantile torecognize the laws of action and reac-tion, that is, the law of cause and effect.

We cry like infants for things that arewithin our reach, if we would onlyreach out and make some effort. We goseeking for happiness and ease, notrealizing that it is all within our grasp.

The child acts upon impulse or in-stinct, and very little upon reasoningor thinking. He strikes at or tries to

 brush away an annoying thing. Theadult also often tries to brush asideannoyances as blindly as does the in-fant. One of the most marked traitsof infantilism in all of us is the resent-ment to authority or correction. Whenis the adult to learn that infantilismcannot be carried with comfort intoadulthood?

An adult should be able to analyzesituations. He should know his heredi-tary traits, environment, superstitions,loves, and fears. Filled with fears evenas an infant, many an adult is dread-ing want and penury in this land ofsuperabundance—even when he is rid-ing in automobiles and aeroplanes, hasa dowTiy bed to sleep on, and food thatkings of a few centuries ago wouldenvy. To have such fears is infantile,mere child thinking.

In our individual lives we see muchchildlike action and thinking. Manymen and women physically grown up

are still expecting miracles of health,wealth, and happiness. Some go toschool or to hear a lecture expectingto attain culture or knowledge without

applying their thinking power. Manygo to church hoping that by observingthe forms of the church they may beassured of heaven. People go to thedoctor for ailments expecting that themiracle of a pill or surgery will givethem ease and freedom from disease.People go to law with the idea that alawyer can protect them from theirdisobedience to law. Some drink liquoror smoke, or indulge in other ways, andexpect no evil effects, even as an infantwill creep into a fire if not restrained.

Man’s social procedure is the markor sign of his intelligence. The lawsnow on our statutes are the compositeimages of our intelligence in laws. Youwill find many expressions of infantil-ism in our government, in our religion,our social contacts. Nationalism is aform of infantilism, engendering hateand fears, and wars are products of in-fantilism.

We need to take stock of the infan-tilism within ourselves. The adultworld is not a place of magic and mira-cles, not a place where every want issupplied without effort. Intelligenceis the recognition of nature’s laws andthe harmonizing of man’s actions with-in these forces. The adult mind has power to calculate, decide, and adjust

to everchanging conditions. The adultmind is an open mind, with a desireto advance, with a love of God and ofhumanity, a love of all life expressions.

A  t i n y   virus and a human nervecell meet and engage in a battle

for survival— one  represents the lowestform of life; the other, the highest. Ifthe nerve cell wins, the virus dies; ifthe virus wins, the nerve cell dies, and

to that extent the motor function ofhuman muscles becomes permanentlyimpaired. This phenomenon of twoforces in action, physicians call  poliomyelitis.  Metaphysics sees in it theeternal creative principle referred to asthe law of the triangle.  Millions indollars have been spent and centuriesin time have elapsed, while man admitsdefeat and the tiny virus flourishes.The virus lives simply, by Divine in-telligence, while man who has forgot-ten God vainly prods his human brainfor wisdom which it cannot give.

Polio virus travels all over the world,has invaded the bodies of people of allraces, has lived in all ages. On thewalls of an ancient tomb an Egyptianartist has left a record in picture form.It is of Prince Antef and his witheredleg. For more than 40 centuries thecarving has challenged medical sciencewhose failure is marked by thousandsof withered legs.

Mine has been the experience of hav-ing been a loser to polio, although Isurvived to carry on as do so manyothers who lose but succeed in salvag-

ing what remains of their nervous sys-tem. I am one of those fortunate oneswho has been able to retain in thememory of consciousness the incidentwhen for a week, during the acutestage of the socalled disease, I hung

For many years this experience hadno other identity than that of “a ter-rible illness” associated with extremesuffering. Later a name developed—infantile paralysis.  In time, I learnedtha t possibly the tiniest of live creationshad invaded my comparatively gigantic body and created all that havoc. Scien-tists searched with microscopes andfinally, in 1908, decided that they hadcaught sight of this minute organism, but the control of it, the understandingof it persists as a mystery. After yearsof pursuit, they talk about the virus aselusive —they cannot discover   where itcomes from, where it breeds, how ittravels. They are reasonably sure thatit enters through the nose, the inouth,or through a wound or even a skinscratch, or break, which naturallyserves as an open door to the invader.

True to the law of evolution, thismuchdreaded organism is bent on ful-filling its mission. Its needs are spe-cialized: it can grow only on living nerve tissue—for this it hunts, no doubtassisted by natural forces of attraction.Especially vulnerable are irritated mu-cous linings, and nerve endings exposed

 by tonsil or adenoid operations. Tooth

extractions or anything else which candestroy the wholeness, or the fortifica-tion, of tissues creates a hazard.

Recent announcements state that“babies routinely immunized againstdiphtheria and whooping cough con-tracted polio more often than wouldother children.” Doctors have proclaim-ed that the paralysis nearly always hastaken place in the arm or leg wherethe “shots” had been given. It isthought that the injections lowered the

resistance in the arm or the leg, or elseset up conditions favorable to paraly-sis. This warning was sounded at theSixth International Congress of Pedi-atrics in Zurich, Switzerland, as a re-

sult of the findings of a number of physicians in England and Australia.Taking a view from another point,

could not various gases, spraying poi-sons, and dusts create irritations, eitherinside or outside the body? Authoritiesin medicine and pharmacology nowadmit that many of the presentdaystomach, intestinal, and other ills, may

 be caused by deadly insecticides used by growers of fruit and vegetable crops.Also, poisons may be inhaled or ab-sorbed through unbroken skin. It has been noticed that some foods intensify polio attacks—to wash off certain fruitsis impossible. Could not these poisonsacting as irritants pave a way for theinvading polio organism?

After invasion of the human domain,the virus travels along a nerve fiberseeking its affinity in polarity. This itfinds in a damaged nerve cell, for itattacks (is drawn to) it. In the tugofwar between the nucleus and thevirus, the stronger will win—herein isthe cause of polio—and why not thatof many other diseases?

It is now known that by means ofa not yet understood process, the

 polio virus reduplicates itself in thenuclei of the cells: there is some spec-ulation that the first, or invading virus,may serve as a “template.” At arecent Congress of the InternationalSociety for Cell Biology, the Yale Uni-versity School of Medicine announceda new approach to the polio problem.This approach debates the question asto “whether the virus reduplicates it-

self or is made by the cells of humanspinal cords.” It states as a fact, how-ever, “that the manufacturing processgoes on in the nucleus of the cell.”

The discovery that an affinity exists between the virus and the cell nucleusis of profound interest to students ofmetaphysics. Since it is now wellknown that a positive polarity predom-inates in the nerve nucleus, the virusthen as a whole must be an opposite,or predominantly of a negative polarity.It might well be argued that during

a devitalized condition of the nucleus,

the forerunner or template not onlyrobs the nucleus of its cytoplasmicnutrition, or essential, but assumes thenucleus’ positive polarity—thereby shat-tering the cell and fulfilling itself

while reproducing the virus or micro-organism now known but not under-stood. I am assuming here that the

 previral unit (the possible forerunner)is yet unknown to science.

Microscopic laboratory observationsindicate that as the invader gets withina close range of the nerve cell’s nucleus,the nucleus feeling the tug loses itscentralized position and the entire cell begins to contract or shrink. In the process of the doomed nucleus, thecell undergoes disintegration. If thedestruction is complete and a sufficientnumber of cells is involved, the lossof their function results in paralysis ofthe muscle which they controlled. No power can now restore the disintegratednerve cells. The white blood cells(phagocytes), acting as scavengers, thenmove in to consume the useless cell particles.

The theory as to how diseasecausingviruses multiply within the cells of the body is being investigated by doctors invarious countries. The belief is tha tcertain viruses have forerunners, which,of course, differ in form from that ofthe virus itself.

The polio template  idea is one thatcan easily be associated with a previralunit. Almost a half century has beenlost in pursuit of a virus that need haveno more relation to the polio problemthan does a butterfly to a caterpillar.The polio virus that is now being pur-sued might well be harmless—merelya second or third form of manifestationof the original, with an entirely differ-

ent purpose of existence. The followingare supporting factors for this state-ment: the known polio virus has beenfound on flies but no human infectioncan be traced to a fly; this virus is con-stantly found in sewage, but polio doesnot spread from sewage; efforts to in-fect laboratory animals have proved

 practically futile; there seems to belittle communicability from person to person.

At this point one feels justified inchanging the focal point as a matter

of logic. Consider the thought that the

 polio virus should be abandoned infavor of a possible predecessor, the previral unit—a round, tiny, nodular mi-croorganism, airborne by tlie aid offollicles, let us say. It has some sea-sonal tendency due to temperature, air

humidity, and some contributory hu-man factors, leading to epidemic possi- bilities. Being airborne, this unit can be found anywhere in the open spaces,and is not confined to congested cities.It found me on the North Dakota plainswhere the air was sunfilled and pure.

Upon entering the body through thenose, mouth, or a skin scratch, shallwe say, the previral unit is attractedto its proper medium of developmentif there is one. As has been stated, itsneed is veiy selective—living nervetissue, but not firmly sound tissue. Wewill assume that after finding its com- plementary essentials the previral or-ganism quickly enlarges and then di-vides itself, forming a colony of viruses

 —the present or recognized polio virus.Thus the previral organism could con-vert itself and the human nerve cellinto a new form by fulfilling its nat-ura l creative principle. It then colo-nizes—usually at the base of the brainor in the spinal cord.

Metaphysics teaches that fundamen-tally all is good, and that the sameforce can be used for either good orevil. The polio organism too can servetwo purposes; this has been discovered by science. It can be man’s friend, ifit finds his nerve condition undegen-erated. The polio organism itself thencreates polio antibodies and thus helpsto immunize, even more, tha t particularhuman body against polio infection.From the viewpoint of metaphysics, inthis act the polio organism apparentlytransmutes itself through a service of

good—yielding to the superiority of thehum an body. But if it finds a condi-tion of sloweddown vibrations, a de-generated condition of the nerve cell, itdoes just the opposite; it becomes a

 parasite and fulfills itself in anotherform—in this case consuming the vital-ity of the cell for its own personal

 procreation—on a lo w er scale ofevolution.

An antibody is a substance that oposes the action of another substance,cience informs us that blood tests

 prove that babies are born with polioantibodies. The mother transmits toher child whatever level of polio anti- bodies she may possess. The first es-cape from polio then is to be bom of amother who has a sufficient supply of

 polio antibodies in her blood. Theseantibodies are capable of preventingthe invading polio organism from be-coming a parasite. However, these

 priortobirth antibodies are lost in 90 percent of the children with in oneyear after birth.

In normal living the infant is sup- posed to develop its own antibodies toreplenish those inherited, disappearingones; however, herein the human be-ing, intrusted wdth this Divine plan,fails in keeping a balanced ratio, and

in many cases a deficiency in polioantibodies develops. Many children dokeep their immunization in balance.Research indicates that most personswho reach the age of fifteen are nolonger open to polio attack, having ac-quired sufficient antibodies, perhapswith the aid of the polio organism it-self, to be immune to damage even ifthe body is invaded.

Five has been the popular age forinfection, but older children are now becoming more and more susceptible.

Statistics show that in the more primi-tive countries the illness is still “in-fantile” rather than adult. What changein living promoted bv socalled civiliza-tion is then responsible?

 F a t i g u e a n d N u t r i t i o n

The crippling results of polio are def-initely related to damaged or devitaliz-ed nerve cells. Fatigue as a devitalizingfactor is contributory to low resistance.Case after case with crippling effectshas been traced to some strenuous effortat the onset of polio. This was so also

in my case. I recall that when alreadyin the fever stage, I tried to comfort afretting baby sister. Mother had leftthe house to help our older brothers atwrork quite some distance from thehouse. It occurs to me now that thesister too might have been sufferingfrom infection, causing her unusualirritability . After all efforts failed inmy attempts to feed her and play withher, I decided that Mother was thesolution. Since walking for the babywas difficult and she was crying, I

LESSON TWO

n   the evolving ofconsciousness, the

mystic strives for anintensification of hissensations of self.  Itis a sensing of the egoas free as possiblefrom the ideas of per-ception and of reflec-tion. It is a self with-

out form, without theusual attributes of per-sonality, and withoutany physical qualifica-tions. To so sense theself is, admittedly, notsimple. Try it some-time. Try to excludeall external impres-sions so that you do  ___ 

not feel, hear, smell,or taste. Even endeav-or to exclude memory impressions. Goso far as to eliminate epicritic sensa-

tions, as temperature, or even theslightest consciousness of the pressureof your clothing, so that nothing re-mains except the realization that youare.

This evolvement of consciousness isactually an isolation. It is a settingapart of the sensations of self fromany and all other sensations of whichconsciousness consists. It is a gradualenlargement of the pristine self. If wrecannot describe self, if there are nodeterminates, can we at least describe

the method or the way by which it isisolated? In the  Dhammapada , thescriptures of Buddhism, there is astatement: “Self is the Lord of self;who else could be Lord?” This denotesthat self is the instigator of   all humanconduct, all behavior and all relationswhich it has with humanity at large.

The Dhammapada continues: “Byone’s self evil is done; by one’s self onesuffers, by one’s self one is purified.This we understand to mean that every

act in which we par-ticipate is in accord-ance with the positionin which we have putself. It is the resultof a particular attitudeof self which we haveand which, conse-quently, has drawnthe conditions of the

world to us or has re-sulted in certain spir-itual associations. Theattitude of self andthe consciousness thatis derived from it islike looking through awindow. Every win-dow reveals to us alittle different vista;every attitude of selfresults in a little dif-

ferent experience.Buddha outlines to Ananda, an arhat

or disciple, the stages of deliverancefrom mundane existence or, as wewould say, the requirements for theevolvement of consciousness. The firststages which he sets forth are thecommon ones of contemplation, theserious attitude of mind, that attitudeof mind where we begin to evaluatelife instead of just responding to it.After these first stages, the penetra-tion into self begins and ultimatelythere is had a oneness of being. This being, which is then experienced, has no

mental counterpart. There is no idea,no definable quality or form, that cor-responds to the experience of this one-ness. It is an ecstatic kind of sensa-tion that has no parallel in any physicalor emotional sensation. It is quite im-

 possible to assign it any identity.At all times, however, during this

mystical consciousness, there is accom- panying it an indefinable realizationof a self. Regardless of how much elseyou may eliminate, you are never en

tirely lost to yourself. We may use, to better understand this, an old Brahmananalogy. It relates that, when a lumpof salt is thrown into the water anddissolves so that it can never again begathered, wherever the water is drawn

it will be saltv. So it is with the atmanor the self. Though we tear from theself its form, its usual identity whichwe have associated with it, and thoughit becomes dissolved, as we might say,in the oneness of being, yet it is notlost in that oneness. It has certaincharacteristics by which we realize thatwe are.

In the Rosicrucian teachings, it isrelated that self is of the Divine con-sciousness and the latter is universalin extent. Since, then, the essence of

self, that which is its cause, is this Di-vine consciousness or soul, self cannever be inhibited. It can never be sosuppressed or so submerged that it can-not be realized. The truest idea of selfwhich can be had is the consciousnessof this Divine essence, or of the im

ressions that come from it in our owneing.

Rosicrucians say that self is an at-tribute of the soul. This must not beconstrued as meaning that self is asubstance of some kind which enters

with soul. Rather, it is a  functional attribute of soul. Self is a consequenceor a result of the soul within us, just asan image is a reflection or the conse-quence of an object and has no ex-istence apart from the object. An ab-solute reflection would be so perfect  that, in fact, the idea of reflectionwould not exist. We would not con-ceive of its being a reflection but ratherwould think of it as another object.Such absolutism never exists in theevolving consciousness. We are always,

no matter how profound the mysticalexperience, aware that self is a reflec-tion of the Divine consciousness withinour own being.

 H i e r a r c h y o f S e l v e s

What does the mystical evolvementof consciousness do for us in life? Asidefrom the mystical content and the in-spirational value that may come to usfrom a consideration of these principles,how do they serve us here and now ina mundane existence? There are two

 points of knowledge which arise as a

result of the practice of the evolvingof consciousness and both of these are beneficial to us in everyday life. Thefirst point of knowledge which we maygain is an understanding of the hierarchy of selves  of which we consist.

We come to know, through the evolve-ment of consciousness, that there is nofixed self which we must assume andwhich remains the same all throughlife, with its fixed point of view or ob- jective. The self depends upon pointsof reference to what is related, just asour concepts of the world vary ac-cording to the extent that we study,read, travel, and meet people.

If we tie our consciousness to theworld of the senses, relying exclusivelyon them, we shall, then, manifest one

kind of self, a purely mundane objec-tive self. If, on the other hand, theself is related to the rational side of our

 being, to contemplation, to the evalua-tion of experience, then we still have an-other of the selves of this hierarchy. Ifthe self is referred to the emotionalinner responses, to a wondering aboutour behavior and why we are motivatedas we are, we come to another type ofself. Also, if the self is referred to in-tuition, to the subtle sensations of ourown being, to a responding to them, we

have a further enlargement of self. Theself, then, is an aggregate of the scaleof personal consciousness. The wholeself is a hierarchy of this variableconsciousness of our own being.

We cannot jump from the limitedobjective self, which concerns  itselfonly with worldly things, to the ex-tended Cosmic self, which is in close proximity to our own higher being.There is too great a gap between thetwo. It is like attem pting to leap fromthe lowest rung of a high ladder to thetop one. To attempt such a jump, asmany do, produces religious fanatics,disillusioned individuals, and those un-fortunates with m e n ta l aberrations.Each self has its own particular value;otherwise, we wmild not have con-sciousness of it. No mechanic uses onetool for all purposes. No surgeon usesone instrum ent for all operations. Noone, who has had the experience andrealizes, through evolving his conscious-ness, that there is a hierarchy of selves,will ever attempt to build his own life

u c h   has been w rit tenabout the person who

stands at the crossroadsof life. At this intersec-tion are signposts indi-cating the direction ordestination to be traveled.It has also been said thatcertain nations are stand-

ing at the crossroads of their destiny.In every instance it is inferred that

there is a placard or signpost whichgives a choice to the adventurer who,from one of the side roads, has reachedthe intersection. Those of us who trav-

el the highways by automobile haveseen hundreds of signs of this nature.For instance, at one intersection we mayfind a sign pointing in a northerly di-rection on which is printed the nameof the city, Northampton. A crossarmon the same signpost points to the westwith the name of Winchester, the cityto be reached by traveling in that di-rection. Along our highways we alsofind signposts of caution, such as“washout ahead,” “road under con-struction,” “detour,” and the like. Thenthere are more cheerful signs, such as

the one which the traveler may readon entering the City of San Jose. Thissign reads, “The Garden City, or theCity of Beautiful Flowers.”

In our analogy the various signpostsdirect us to that which is to be found

even heed them when they have to dot8es*  with caution. Nevertheless, they are

 June   pUt there for a specific purpose. That1951  purpose is to help us reach a definite

destination or enjoy the scenery alonga certain pathway.

 Now, a signpost is an immobile ob- ject. Although it provides helpful in-formation, it remains stationary; how-ever, even though it stays in one place,it invites the traveler to go one way oranother. A signpost, in and by itself,is not interested in you; it is not con-cerned about the route you may or maynot take. Its sole purpose is to givedirections.

All of us are acquainted with humansignposts among our friends and neigh-

 bors. Many people are eager to pointthe way for someone else. But howmany of these people travel the pathwhich they point out? There are thosewho do, to be sure, but not all.

Some human signposts may befound among the members of every or-ganization. Let us take, for example,a fictitious club and its creed. Supposethat a banner carrying the words “Hon-esty is the best policy” is flying fromthe flagpost of the Deadwood Men’sBusiness Club. Does every member ofthat club conscientiously practice hon-esty in his business dealings in every

transaction? Yet every businessman inthe club has affirmed the belief thathonesty is the best policy and thatadherence to this policy by each oneof them will improve business. It isincumbent upon each member of theclub to bring in new members who willsubscribe to the policy.

The club is not at fault if the mem- bers are not honest, but here we findthat some of the members of the clubare merely signposts. They give lip

service to “Honest}’ is the best policy.”They tell the potential new member ofthe advantages to be gained from be-longing to the club and by followingthe policy in business affairs.

T a l k i n g o r D o i n g ?Are you only a signpost indicating

the right way, but remaining station-ary? R egard less ofwhether you belong toa club or any organ-ization, are you oneof those people whofreely advise othersthat by doing this orthat, they will be the better for it? Admit-tedly, signposts are

helpful, and your ad-vice to another personmay assist him to pro-gress toward goodhealth and happiness.Givers of advice, how-ever, should be repre-sentative of what they

 purport to represent.They should endeavorto live by the idealsand creed of the or-ganization to whichthey subscribe; oth-erwise, they are onlynominal members.

We all have, in at-tending some churchof our choice, over-heard comments as weleft the church, suchas “Wasn’t ReverendJones’ sermon wonder-ful? ” “ D idn’t Dr.Jones’ message inspireyou?” It is grantedthat all those in attendance were moved

 by the words of the minister, but werethe members moved and inspired tolive by the Christian ideals advocated by the minister?

Those who made the above com-ments regarding Dr. Jones’ sermonmay be called, for the sake of illustra-tion, human signposts.  They tell othersof the wonderful words of their min-ister, of the wonderful church in whichhe preaches, and of the goodness to berealized by following the precepts andconcepts of tha t particu lar church. But

other than talking about these preceptsand concepts, are these good membersliving by them? Are they doing any-thing besides talking about them? Whatis the answer to this problem, a prob-lem faced by every worthwhile or-

ganization? The solution cannot begiven in a few wellchosen words.

We may ask, “Why does a personwant to become amember of any one ofthe hundred or morefraternal, philosophi-cal, social, or businessorganizations?” Sim- ply because he feelsthat he can gain some-thing from it, such as

 prestige, a social pur-

 pose or, because hehas a superficial inter-est in its teachings.Perhaps the interest ismore than superficial, but by and large it isfor personal gain oradvantage.

The advantage may be easily attained; andif so, the organizationis likely to enjoy atremendously largemembership. If at-tainment of the ad-vantages is difficult,the member’s enthusi-asm will probably belukewarm, and as aresult the membershipof the organization towhich he belongs will be co m p a ra tiv e lysmall. U su ally th a twhich is worth while presents more difficul-

ties. On the other hand, worthwhile

endeavors, those which will bring aboutultimate good of health and happiness,are far more important, and can havea farreaching effect on all of its sub-scribers.

Fraternal brotherhoods and philo-sophical societies have very high ideals.The desire to achieve these ideals orobjectives, to be successful, must havean emotional response within the in-dividuals. The ideals must mean more to

the individual than something that re-quires merely casual thought from timeto time. A philosophical or fraternalgroup has a code of ethics of high level.Often organizations of this nature offera course of study which is very pro-

found. Where a course of study is in-volved, more responsibilities are placedupon the individual member. Suchmember is very likely to be progressive-ly moving along thie pathway of lifetoward a definite goal; he is not a hu-man signpost who simply points theway for others.

Herein, it is believed, may be foundthe answer to the problem. It is in thelending of oneself to the furtheranceand promulgation of the purposes ofthe organization of which he is a mem-

 ber. The matter of personal gain issubjugated. Whether an organizationoffers a course of study or not, themember who is completely sold on itsideology, code, creed, and doctrine,feels that it is a worthwhile cause.He is proud of being a member of it,he is fully aware of the benefits whichhe has realized from participation inits activities, and he wants others toshare in them. It is only when wegive of ourselves that we can expectto be tru ly benefited. By giving ofourselves, we lend strength to the

maintenance of the organization ofwhich we are a part, and begin to livethe life that we would have others live.We do this consciously, knowingly, withthe fullest of realization. We know tha tthe objectives, the teachings, or idealsof our organization are worth while;they are, in fact, worth sacrificing for.

Every individual should have a goalin keeping with his ability, and con-sistently work toward that goal in theface of all obstacles. For life to beworth while, there must be a purposein living; there must be ideals to strive

for in attaining the goal of achieve-ment. In living such a plan one findshappiness; the happiness is in doing,and in being with people who havesimilar aspirations, in seeking avenuesof selfexpression, in rendering serviceto one’s fellow men.

Can you think of any successful busi-ness that does not have at least anannual goal? So many items must besold; so much cash must be realized;new accounts must be established.

What makes an army win battles?The striving to obtain an objective. Theobjective may be a bridgehead or avillage. The men in the ranks actually

 become enthusiastic in their strenuousefforts to reach their objective, knowing

full well that when it is reached an-other will be established. There is, ofcourse, no happiness in war, but thereis satisfaction in winning or in reach-ing the goal.

To achieve one’s goal, one must havefaith in himself, certainty of objective,courage, and a challenge to all thatlies in his path. According to the in-tensity of one’s desires, will be his joyin achievement. The adversities of lifeare necessary to produce the fire of do-ing, and of actively reaching the ideal.

History records the lives of manyindividuals who have groped in dark-ness against seemingly overwhelmingodds, but ever inspired by hope andfarsighted vision have achieved victoryat last. These are the ones who have

 been irresistibly drawn on by a greatdream. The law is and always has beento work, to struggle if necessary toovercome seeming odds in reaching anobjective.

Achievement does not come aboutthrough accident. A sound sense ofvalues makes life everlastingly worth

while. There must be the will to do,to work, to ever move toward the goal.There must be an inner driving forceto carry us on; in short, the incentivemust be to work for a cause that isgreater than ourselves. If one’s objec-tive should happen to be health andhappiness, one cannot simply thinkhealth and happiness. He must putforth the necessary effort to attainthese desirable conditions. Assumingthat the objective is truly worth while,achievement of it will probably be atthe expense of sacrifice and perhapssuffering. But it must always be re-membered that suffering is reserved forthe great.

Life is encompassed by strange con-trasts. Out of the caveman past andthe materialistic present, somethingdeep, lasting, and eternal, is taking rootfor mankind. A power is evolving inus which is quite different from thatordinarily expressed in the long, long

 past of yesterday. It is understanding,tolerance, patience, and thoughtfulness,a rise of personal consideration forothers.

Man is still faced with adversity in

one form or another, but man is re-sourceful, and he is learning that hemust use his own initiative to over-come conditions rather than dependingupon his brother.

If one does not belong to a fine hu-manitarian organization with noble

urposes, he should establish ideals forimself. Each man and woman should

meditate upon life, upon the unceasing

 push toward that which is greater thanoneself, that which leads on and on.We should meditate upon the responsi- bility of the fulfillment of our most profound yearnings.

This very day let us give seriousconsideration to the ideals we havethought of, or which we desire toachieve. Let us conscientiously gener-ate the necessary driving force to carryus toward our goal. Let us be repre-sentative of that which is desired. Letus strive to exemplify that desire ratherthan to exemplify the inanimate sign- post which simply points the way.

through the centuries has intrigued theimagination of men. World conquerorshave stood in awe before it. Even inantiquity the masses of men knew littleof its origin. There are many lessersphinxes in Egypt. In general, they

 portray a king, the lion’s body sym- bolizing the temporal and imagineddivine power of the Pharaoh.

It is assumed that the Great Sphinxwas built during the reign of Khafre(reigned about 2850 B.C.) who erected

a pyramid nearby. This assumption is based on an obscure reference to Khafrefound between its forepaws. How-ever, the reference was inscribed somefourteen hundred years after Khafre’sreign.

There is an interesting legend thatThothmes IV (grandfather of thefamed Amenhotep IV), while still ayoung prince, was hunting in the vi-cinity of the Great Sphinx. Becomingfatigued, he lay down in its shade torest. During his sleep he had a strangedream. Ra, the great sungod, appeared 

to him and ordered him to clear theSphinx of all the accumulated sand.Even at that early time, sand had cov-ered a large portion of the great statue.During the period of Thothmes IV, itwas believed that the Sphinx was a por-trait of the sungod, Ra, and erectedfourteen hundred years earlier byKhafre, as stated.

Thothmes IV was obedient to thecommand and ordered the sand clearedaway. He then recorded the event ona stele (huge stone tablet). A laterversion of Thothmes’ mystical experi-ence was made by the priests of theTemple of Osiris on a huge architrave,an ornamental support. This was even-tually removed from the temple, and placed against the breast of the Sphinx —there it may be seen today. Legendrelates that candidates of the ancient

mystery schools took solemn obligations between the paws of the Sphinx, andin front of this sacred inscription, as part of their initiation.

The scene of the cover depicts thePharaoh, presumably Khafre, and hisqueen, MeriSAnc.h, inspecting theSphinx as the sculptors work duringthe cool of the night.

their first Convocation in the SupremeTemple this year was larger than ex-

Amenhotep IV and set to music byFrater Johan Franco, sung by the Tem-

 ple Chantor Churchill Jackson. . . . Itwas good to be reminded of the world-wide nature of our sacred ceremony bythe presence of Frater Wilson WaweFrigene of Sapele, Nigeria, West Africa.

Many thousands of Rosicrucians andtheir friends have seen the film  Egypt  the Eternal  since it was released iastyear. In Mexico City where it wasrecently shown by Quetzalcoatl Lodge,its showing had an added attraction.Dr. Alejandro Medina, wellknownMexican Egyptologist, was present, andfollowing the picture, gave a supple-mentary lecture on Egyptian history.

 V A V During April, some twenty Turkish

and Persian rugs from the famous Bal-lard Collection were on exhibit in theRosicrucian Egyptian and Oriental Mu-seum. These were mainly of the Eight-eenth and early Nineteenth centuriesalthough a few were much earlier.

The symbolism aside, an Oriental rugis an object of beauty and worthy of a place in museums because of its design,color, and craftsmanship. With evenan elementary appreciation of the sym- bolism inherent in it—such as, for in-stance, that it pictures eternity or spacewith its worldly symbols—one at once becomes aware of it as something far

more than just a practical item of every-day use.Since the rugmakers were and are

largely Mohammedan, it is naturalthat many of the rugs exhibited are

 prayer rugs, including three Kulah,three Ghiordes, and one Ladik, all ofthe eighteenth century.

Among the larger rugs, the formaland familiar patterned Khiva Bokharanever fails to appeal because of therichness of its red background and the

Feraghan because of its profuse floral pattern. Of the Khilim in the collec-tion, the “bride’s rug” or KisKhilim

 proved a genuine attraction. Woven offinely twisted wool and having the ef-fect almost of linen work, the Khilim

serves many purposes, divan covers,curtains, tents even. The KisKhilim,however, is a young girl’s own rug.She attempts to finish it in time to geta husband. Often she weaves a lockof her own hair into it.

Fortunately, most books on rugs are beautifully illustrated and practicallvevery public library has Ballard’s bookor one approaching it in interest andexcellence, such as Rosa Belle Holt’s

In a contest recently sponsored bythe National Guild of Piano Teachers,something near one hundred composi-tions were submitted. One of those ac-claimed “winner” and receiving a mon-ey prize was Soror Louise Anderson

of the Editorial Department at Rosicru-cian Park and member of the RoseCroix University staff. Soror Andersonentered two compositions,  Ballet Slip

 pers  and  Etude,  in tlie preparatory di-vision. Curiously enough,  Etude,  aspontaneous effort requiring only fortyminutes for its notation, brought higher

 praise from composer John Mokrejs ofHollywood who judged the entries thandid  Ballet Slippers which had cost hoursof work. Both compositions, however,were adjudged “superior.”

The second practical point of knowl-edge which emerges from the evolvement of consciousness is the acquiringof an infinite conception. The fartheryou evolve your consciousness, thegreater becomes the extent of your ex

erience, the vaster the potentialities ofnowledge. The aggregate of experi-

ences becomes your concept and thisgrows into infinity. With this infiniteconception, you come to learn not to

 place limits upon anything. There areno limitations except the ability of themind to comprehend at any given time.This point develops on the part of theaspirant a liberal view, a tolerant

We know that no single stroke ofthe artist’s brush, in itself, depicts thecontent of his painting, that it is theaggregate of such strokes related toeach other that gives form to the paint-ing. So, too, the one who evolves hisconsciousness knows that no single

 point, no single attitude of mind, canconstitute the whole scope of any sub-

 ject. He knows that there are no

absolutes in all of life. There areonly relative conditions. We must attimes accept things as they appear. Itis only because, at that moment, wehave not the ability to see beyond them.Even though at the moment we are solimited, we must not crystallize our

minds on such temporary limitations.We must be prepared for ultimate vari-ations which will come, if we permitthem. This view, then, arising out ofthe evolvement of consciousness, dis-

 pels racial and religious prejudice onthe part of the individual. It, as well,does away with the finiteness of suchideas as heaven and hell.

Some may say that the points ofknowledge of the hierarchy of selvesand an infinite conception are strictlyindividual attainments. No matter

what benefits the individual may de-rive from them, how, they ask, do suchindividual attainments benefit humani-ty a t large? We well know how hu-manity or society has created generalfinalities, certain goals, which it haslabelled and which it has urged, innumerous ways, that men pursue, suchas fame, power, wealth, and the like.Persons are forced into these channelswhether they find satisfaction in theseends or not. The hierarchy of selvesmakes it possible for each individual

to have a personal satisfaction  in ac-cordance with his own evolving con-sciousness, that is, in relation to hisown being and unfoldment. He willnot be tempted to concentrate uponone aspect of himself and destroy the

 balance of society, leaving it too mun-dane or too practical. If each con-forms to the self of his hierarchy towhich he is closest in understandingand realizes that there are variationsof self, he will be inclined to under-stand the inclinations of others to pur-sue different interests. He will not in-sist that his inclination is the only oneand he will be tolerant of the pursuitsof others, just as a parent is tolerantof the interests of a child. The parenthas had those experiences; they nolonger appeal to him, but he will not

compel the child to abandon those in-terests because they are no longer his.Because of the concept of infinity

which emerges from the evolvement ofconsciousness, the individual will not

 pursue an y avenue of monopoly of theresources of nature or the services ofmankind. He will understand andrealize the need for an integration ofhuman interests. We must work to-

gether collectively; to monopolize will be to destroy the equilibrium of hum an-ity. The only dynamic effect in theevolvement of consciousness, where itacts upon humanity and attempts tomotivate humanity, is to teach othersthe technique of evolvement. This doc-trine has no compulsory dogmas, nofixed notions which it attempts to im- pose on others. It has no “don’ts” ; no prohibitions. It expounds only teach-ings by which others may expand thefunctions of the selves of winch theyconsist.

The mystic who expounds the evolve-ment of consciousness wants humanity, by this teaching, to experience the fu ll-ness of life. Through each individual

 perceiving the variations of self, manwill learn that he himself makes his

own boundaries, that such cannot ex-ist except in the limits of his own con-sciousness. Man will come to know,for example, that success is not a mat-ter of Divine intervention, that Goddoes not act for or on behalf of manor any group of men. Mastery in lifeis not the result of a patronizing state.

in the body. Why and how to controlthis phenomenon—keep the balance ofthe Creator’s original plan—in order toachieve personal efficiency is human-ity ’s problem. As already intimated,the secret lies in that Divine intelligencewhich the tiny polio organism has re-tained but which man has chosen toforget. Our human intelligences now lookingfor help in vaccines against polio seem

In my own life, I well remember thecrucial experience of those first days ofthe acute stage. The body had butlittle association  with the outside world

 —no intake of, nor crying nor cravingfor nourishment. The virus had launch-ed its attack on the spinal cord, devour-ing or destroying the nerve cellsnecessary to the control and nourish-ment of the backandleg muscles.While polio was winning, somewhere

 projected, away from my body, was I,the consciousness, but I was not feeling,thinking, nor doing anything. I merelywas.

At intervals during the days andnights, human hands touched my bodyin some attempt to relieve the contract-

ed muscles. Then it was that the body became a part of me—an uncontrolla- ble bundle of concentrated pain. Ittook extreme effort to summon enoughenergy for a wail of protest within anagonizing moment. The hands seekingto administer service would then leave,and I would return again to that stateof the unconscious and yet conscious.

In this peculiar condition of exist-ence, I was definitely aware of onething, a sort of anchorage to the con-sciousness of one  sitting at the foot of
