The NVA is operated by the National Videogame Foundation, a not-for-profit established in 2016 to develop the role of videogames in culture, education and society. It also produces the acclaimed, annual GameCity festival.

As well as the core visitor attraction, we also offer room hire, unique events and away days.

Inspirational speakerOur director Iain Simons, can be hired for your event.

Since 2006, Iain Simons has been the director of GameCity, an annual video-game festival attracting thousands of people to Nottingham from all over the globe. In October 2015, he was announced as co-director of the National Videogame Arcade, the world’s first cultural centre for gaming. Hear about his journey and knowledge of the independent cultural entertainment sector and what it really takes to start your very own successful business and run a national institution.

Minecraft : Surviving the Island (for up to 16 guests)

The great outdoors, indoors.Here at the NVA we want to show you how it can bring your team together to learn new ways to collaborate, communicate and (most importantly) survive on the beautiful, remote and dangerous island paradise we’ve prepared for you.

During this unique field-trip, your team will be shown the basics of Minecraft, what it is and how to use it; before being dumped alone and defenceless in our virtual wilderness.

The National Videogame Arcade Events

Nestled impressively within the Creative Quarter you can hire out our distinctive building for your special event, product launch or celebration. You will have your own dedicated events manager to help you create an event to remember. On the day your host and the NVA crew will be there to really ‘power up’ your night.

Gallery take over (for up to 150 guests)

Is exactly what it says on the tin. You and your company will have access to all three galleries all night. With over 70 games for you to play to your hearts content. Our knowledgeable Crew members will be on hand to assist and cheer you on, you’ll even be able to book your very own virtual reality sessions.

NVA Tournaments (for up to 40 guests)

Held in our largest room, our NVA tournaments come with hand selected games, tournament host, and access to our private bottle bar.

Introducing C++ (8 people)C++ is a middle level, multi-purpose programming language which runs on a variety of platforms including Windows, Mac OS, and various versions of UNIX. This introductory session covers the basics of the language.

Get Started with 3D: Blender (8 people)Blender is a professional free and open-source 3D computer graphics software product used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games. This introductory session covers navigation, basic geometry, and asset development. Basic is written in C, C++ and Python, so you should have some experience with those. As Blender is free and open source, what you create in the session can be accessed and worked on when you get home.

The National Videogame Arcade Learn a Skill

Add a workshop to your day so your team can take home a new skill. Our workshops range from making and flying your own team rocket, to learning how to programme your own game.

Make your own Makey Makey games controller (Max group size 20)Makey Makeys are brilliant little bits of kit that enable you to turn anything into a controller. You will receive a demonstration on how to use the Makey Makey and be set a challenge. This could be to land a rocket, lay an instrument, get the furthest in a race, teams then put their controllers to the test!

Create interactive stories with Twine (For 16-20 people)Twine is a programme that lets you create your own online adventure story akin to the old ‘choose your own adventure’ books. During the workshop, you will learn how to create and build your own online digital story, which you can take away with you at the end of the day.

Introduction to Python (8 people)Python is a popular and widely used language that emphasizes code readability. This introductory session goes over the basics of the language, and is perfect for those who would like to add another language to their arsenal.

Intro to Scratch (For 16-20 people)Scratch is a visual programming language that allows you to easily create playable games, and offers a stepping stone to the more advanced world of computer programming. This introductory workshop shows you how to get going with Scratch. you will design and write your own script, develop algorithm design, and experiment with motion, looks, sound, data, events, control, and operators.

Intro to Game Maker (8 people)If you’ve done a bit of computer programming in your time, then Game Maker is a great tool to get your teeth into, by using the sandboxed scripting language, you can create games that would not be possible only using drag-and-drop. This introductory workshop shows you how to get going with Game Maker, and introduce you to the difference between visual programming and programming with script.
