Fourth Day Journal• August 2013 From the Emmaus Community Lay Director Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 Wow! Where did the summer go? We are already two- thirds through the season typically set aside as a time to take a deep breath, rest up, and prepare to return to school, work, etc. But the Lord tells us that if we but follow Him, He will give us rest. I have never thought of following the Lord as being especially restful, but on reflection, I’ve come to realize that sleep is not necessarily what the Lord is promising us. If we focus on the fact that Jesus is there with us to help ac- complish whatever tasks He has laid before us, He will give us the tools, the courage, the right words, the new ideas to achieve the goal. We can thus go forth in confidence, as- sured of the Lord’s continued blessings. The reduction of anxiety in performing the Lord’s work is the rest we have been promised. If this helps us to sleep more soundly at night, then so much the better! In the story of Martha and Mary, which we heard in our Sunday reading recently, the Lord chastises Martha (Luke 10:38-42) when she complains of having so much to do. Jesus is not telling her to stop being busy with cleaning and cooking and playing hostess. Rather, He is telling her not to be so anxious as she goes about her chores. Remember that Mary was the woman who had wept at the feet of Je- sus and dried them with her hair (Luke 7:37-38). In this way she recognized Him as her Lord and Savior, and in turn her sins were forgiven (Luke 7:48). Martha just needed to find joy in serving the Lord! So let us rejoice in the Lord always, so that we may find rest in Him. DeColores! Blessings, Jack Christie Community Lay Director Did You Know? Fourth Day Journal• August 2013

From the Emmaus Spiritual Director

We have received a new appointment and I am now serving Duncan Memorial UMC in Berryville, Virginia. It’s a won-derful church, with lots of great people. I mentioned in a brief write-up about us that we were in-volved in NCA-Emmaus. One person came up and intro-duced himself by name, walk, and table. I’ve already given my new Administrative Assistant an application to walk. There’s something about Emmaus that binds us together. Perhaps it’s the great experience we have had up on the mountain and how wonderful it was to share in all of that. It’s more than that, I believe. It’s the joy of being part of an extended family. It’s the joy of experiencing all that love. It’s the joy of belonging. It’s the joy of God touching our hearts through the love of Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit. No matter how challenging the weekend may be behind the scenes, the Spirit is always there to uplift us and carry us forth. There’s the bond! We are brought together by the power of the Spirit. Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful is not just a line from a prayer, it’s what we seek to do as a community of Emmaus participants. We want our hearts to be filled with love, with power, with mercy, with grace, with hope, with life in Jesus’ name. We want to live improved lives, enhanced lives, different lives, more faithful lives. And even when we falter along the way, each day is a new day to pick ourselves up and try again. God keeps reach-ing out to us day after day. God never lets us go. God is always with us and God is always with us when we are in the company of others. And what a blessing it is to get to claim so many wonderful Emmaus sisters and brothers as our friends -- people who are making a difference in our lives, as well as the lives of others. We all have the opportunity to touch another per-son’s life and bring them the love and hope of Jesus.

Enjoy the balance of the summer! Our love and prayers go out to E-166 and E-167 as they are in preparation for their time on the mountain. Blessings and De Colores,

Doug Geeting, SD

From the Emmaus Music Directors, MD’s MUSIC is universal praise to our Lord! Recently while on a Dominican Republic mission trip, kids joyfully sang "Esta Lucecita en Mi". Upon my return Gloria, unknowingly, sent me English lyrics to "This little light of mine" (same song). A God wink! Visions of the enthusiastic Latino children dancing and singing were still fresh in my head and yet, I could envision Gloria leading E-166 with the same joyful spirit of praise. How cool is that! He's everywhere. Beth Moore recently lead our small group study in a discussion of how song originated with God and accompanied creation (Job 38:7). And these thoughts - Emotions and experiences can be expressed through song in ways spoken words can never satisfy (James 5:13; Psalm 13; Hosea 2:14-15). A song greatly enhances the ability of the human mind to memorize (Deut. 31:19-22). Paul said " I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind." (1 Corin. 14:15). A song can change our entire perspective (Acts 16:24-26). A song can also greatly affect the heart of God! Go out with JOY - (Isaiah 55:12). Renew your spirit daily ( 2 Corin. 4:16) Keep the youthfulness of your soul, Keep a song in your heart.

See you at Ultreya. SING a song of PRAISE! We love you! Mary Ann, Jim and

COMMUNITY PALANCA

I am the Community Palanca Cha. I need volunteers to make placemats for me. We need 270 decorated placemats for each team that goes to the Mountain.

I will have blank placemats at the Ultreyas each month. You can create your own design, either free hand, trace from a coloring book, use markers, glitter and glue to create your designs. You can either do them yourselves or get your Sunday School classes to do them. The pilgrims really like them when they come from the children. There are two kinds needed: the ones that are decorated with cute pic-tures and words, and ones that specifically say “DeCol-ores”. It does not matter what the picture is, it only needs to say “DeColores” somewhere on the placemat. If you wish to make a set for a specific weekend that is great but you need to mark the envelope this is for E-# and I will make sure it goes on that weekend.

You can do placemats for Chrysalis they need the same decorated and instead of saying DeColores they say FLY WITH CHRIST. If you want to do them for Chrysalis you can get them from me also, and return them to me.

Or what about your cloth Palanca bags that you received on Friday. How many of you sew? You can go to your fabric store and pick up some material. Rainbow material works well, I guess because most people don’t want to use it as a dress. I will have the dimensions available for you if you’re interested at the Ultreya.

Do you remember your Joy Flag Parade? Joy flags are al-ways needed. These can be made from paper or fabric, and can be as simple or intricate as you desire, as long as they

say “Joy” somewhere on the flag. These should always be the pennant shape, too. You may also specify the joy flags for specific weekend also.

First stones are simple. Go outside, pick up a rock, and write “First” on it. Please write “F-I-R-S-T” and not “1-S-T on it. We have felt for the “I’m Lovable” flower pin that you re-ceived on Friday. Men get a pennant-shaped ribbon, and felt is available for both. Do you remember being showered with Warm Fuzzies on Sunday? If you love yarn, then this is the project for you. At the Ultreyas there will be the prayer wheel for you to sign up to pray and also, there will be a sheet passed that will have snacks for the weekend. You can sign at the Ultreyas. Food for the weekends needs to get to the Head Cha before Tuesday of the week that the team is going unless you are sponsoring someone and will be going to the mountain on Thursday.

Where do I get all of the material or instructions, you may ask. Well, you can pick up placemats, felt for flowers and banners, and yarn for warm fuzzes at the Ultreya each month. You can also pick up or return items at the Ultreya. There is usually a table near the church’s entrance where items are placed. Or you can find me and hand items to me.

If you’re not available to attend the Ultreya, you can contact me. My email address is [email protected] and phone number is 703- 216-2469. And if you’re concerned about getting an item to me quickly, we can always keep in touch by phone and work out something. If you are willing to serve as Palanca Chairman for your church please fill out the information on the clipboard that I will have at each Ul-treya in the front. Please list which items your group is in-terested in doing, so when I am running low on items I can contact the chairman.

If you are in a reunion group this is a good project that you could do. So, check with your group and see what items you all would love to do. If someone from your church has already signed up then you don’t need to. I am looking for-ward to working with you!

If you would like to get placemats please call Linda Smith 703-216-2469 and she will meet you to get them to you. Thank you De Colores! And Fly with Christ

National Capital Area Chrysalis

From Our Chrysalis Community Lay Director “1 Corinthians 25-31

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were wise by human standards; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of the world and the despised things – and the things that are not – to nullify the things that are , so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has be-come for us wisdom from God – that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

I find myself sitting at my computer, with hands frozen over the keys. What is there to say? This is the last article that I will be writing as NCA Chrysalis Lay Director. I find myself tearing up. Am I crazy? It is time to release this leadership responsibility. I should be jumping up for joy. What is wrong with me? I am ready to pass the torch to J R Wil-liams – I really am. But God has blessed me in so many ways by saying yes and I know He will be with J R, as well. God has carried me when I felt frustration and disappoint-ment. God has blessed me with many of your encouraging words, actions, listening ears, and prayers. People have supported our many fund raisers and donated agape. Chrysalis is a worthwhile ministry that has changed many lives in a powerful and positive way. I gladly serve to share what has been shared to me. The Chrysalis Board’s inten-tion is to make things better. You may not always agree with us; and the board is not always in agreement with each other. But we continue to work together peacefully and lov-

ingly to plant God’s seeds (participating and not anticipat-ing). My favorite moments this last year have been seeing the Chrysalis Caterpillars at Candlelight and Closing. If you have not experienced this events, I hope you will in the fu-ture. I have met so many amazing youth and adults and I love seeing God grow in us all!
