Fourth Day JournalAugust, 2012 From the Emmaus Community Lay Director Each morning after I walk my two dogs I’ve gone outside and watered our hopelessly brown grass in the hopes of it springing back to life. Recently it has gotten me thinking about how we feed and water our faith journey. We’ve been blessed as a community to welcome so many new pilgrims and butterflies over this last year with even more yet to come. So how can we be sure that we’re growing our faith so that we can in turn help others as they begin their Fourth Day. As I’ve thought of this more, the Parable of the Sower comes to mind. In Mark 4: 1-9 Jesus relates the story of the farmer who is planting seeds. Some end up along the path and are eaten by birds, others are planted in shallow soil and wither in the sun and others are planted in good, deep soil and grow strong and tall. Our faith is like a seed- in order to grow strong we need to water it and root our- selves in the Word. At times I find myself weary like my grass, it is then that I turn to what God teaches us, listen to a Christian song or turn to my accountability group. It helps me ensure I’m firmly planted so I can bloom in Christ’s love for all to see. How do you stay firmly planted? How do you share your faith so others may see Christ through you? It’s hard to believe that it is already August. Where did the summer go? It was so good to see all of you at our annual BBQ and the July Ultreya- what a blessing to be able to fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank you to Annandale UMC for hosting and lovingly preparing such a great meal. In August it is on to Christ Church to meet the women who are preparing to head to the mountain for E162 and the beautiful butterflies of C82. Each time we welcome new members into our community it is an opportunity to be a witness, to share God’s love. I don’t think there is a better example of faith and love pos- sible. My prayer for each of you is that you continue to be firmly planted and nurtured in your faith- shining God’s love for all to see. Each morning after I walk my two dogs I’ve gone outside and watered our hopelessly brown grass in the hopes of it springing back to life. Recently it has gotten me thinking about how we feed and water our faith journey. We’ve been blessed as a community to welcome so many new pilgrims and butterflies over this last year with even more yet to come. From the Emmaus Spiritual Director

My wife and I had left our Golden Retriever, "Goldie," with our son, Nathan, while we were away in North Carolina in mid-July, attending a Church Conference. Goldie's about 7-1/2 years old, and is used to us leaving her with family and friends for short- and medium-term stays; she's at home often, during day, while we are about the business of our congregations. But when we returned home, just a few days ago, I was struck by what she did. First, she greeted us enthusiastically, jumping and hopping around us, glad to have us home - like we were wayward children who had come back after a long absence. But in only 2 minutes, as we were sitting and talking with our son, she had stretched out at our feet, and in short order, was snoring.... she had the kind of peace about her that comes when "all's right with the world!" Now, in her mind, I suppose, things were soon going to get back to "normal," and her meals would be delivered on time, walks would happen in familiar path-ways, and best of all, she could sleep in her own kennel, on her own mat, and eat peanut butter from her own supply at treat-time! Peace and calm were at hand.... and as she'd been keeping faithful vigil all along, and now, could rest. Have you ever had that kind of moment when, after a pro-tracted spell of "watching and waiting," things "came 'round just right"? It reminds me of the Quaker song, "Simple Gifts," which ends with just that phrase! Goldie had kept the vigil, as do we, when the children aren't feeling well, the job's in jeopardy, a loved one is in the Emergency Room, when there's something troubling our souls, or when there's a matter about which much prayer is required. Did you know that the very first piece of the New Testa-ment was a letter written to a group of Christians urging them to do just that - keep the faith, even when Jesus' ab-sence - and awaited return - had gone on longer than they expected? Paul wrote his first letter to the Thessalonian Christians imploring them to be found faithful at the Lord's return - whenever it would be! Some had given up their jobs and found a hillside facing toward the Mount of Olives, where they thought He was to descend. Others had let go

of their "usual and ordinary" daily life-patterns.... thinking that "at any moment" He would appear.... and they'd be the first to see Him. Sometimes, I want to be with them, I suppose. I want to revel on tiptoe in the life of the Community of the Faithful, hoping that Jesus will make an appearance at the climax of our worship hour.... just on my/our schedule! And yet, sometimes, when life is full of grief and challenge, I want to crawl up into God's lap, like I did when I was a little fellow, scaling my way up into my dad's lap, to feel safe and se-cure and protected. But I'm reminded that great ships aren't meant for the shel-ter and safety of the harbor. They are built to be put in the way of risk and danger; they are meant to be put at peril.... knowing full well that there are winds and waves and untold dangers capable of sinking them at every mile. Maybe that's why we need to gather for worship and study and fellowship around the Lord's table so often, and then find ourselves to be sent out to serve.... to "walk the walk," even if it may lead to the summit of the Hill of the Skull. Sometimes, I need a break; sometimes, I need to be chal-lenged and stretched; and sometimes, I just need to be reminded of both Who I am, and especially, Whose. Maybe that's the case with Goldie, and why she was so glad to see us.... she wanted to be reminded that she was a part of our family, too. That's what happens when we are with each other, and with Him.... we hear His voice saying, "You belong to me, and I especially love you." Thanks be to God for those moments of intimacy and love to which He invites us. Always be glad when you get to go Home.... even if it's for only a little while. Grace to you, and peace.

COMMUNITY PALANCA

I am the Community Palanca Cha. I need volunteers to make placemats for me. We need 270 decorated place-mats for each team that goes to the Mountain.

I will have blank placemats at the Ultreyas each month. You can create your own design, either free hand, trace from a coloring book, use markers, glitter and glue to cre-ate your designs. You can either do them yourselves or get your Sunday School classes to do them. The pilgrims really like them when they come from the children. There are two kinds needed: the ones that are decorated with cute pic-tures and words, and ones that specifically say “DeColores”. It does not matter what the picture is, it only needs to say “DeColores” somewhere on the placemat. If you wish to make a set for a specific weekend that is great but you need to mark the envelope this is for E-# and I will make sure it goes on that weekend.

You can do placemats for Chrysalis they need the same decorated and instead of saying DeColores they say FLY WITH CHRIST. If you want to do them for Chrysalis you can get them from me also, and return them to me.

Or what about your cloth Palanca bags that you received on Friday. How many of you sew? You can go to your fab-ric store and pick up some material. Rainbow material works well, I guess because most people don’t want to use it as a dress. I will have the dimensions available for you if you’re interested at the Ultreya.

Do you remember your Joy Flag Parade? Joy flags are always needed. These can be made from paper or fabric, and can be as simple or intricate as you desire, as long as they say “Joy” somewhere on the flag. These should al-ways be the pennant shape, too. You may also specify the joy flags for specific weekend also.

First stones are simple. Go outside, pick up a rock, and write “First” on it. Please write “F-I-R-S-T” and not “1-S-T on it. We have felt for the “I’m Lovable” flower pin that you received on Friday. Men get a pennant-shaped ribbon, and felt is available for both. Do you remember being showered with Warm Fuzzies on Sunday? If you love yarn, then this is the project for you. At the Ultreyas there will be the pray-

er wheel for you to sign up to pray and also, there will be a sheet passed that will have snacks for the weekend. You can sign at the Ultreyas. Food for the weekends needs to get to the Head Cha before Tuesday of the week that the team is going unless you are sponsoring someone and will be going to the mountain on Thursday.

Where do I get all of the material or instructions, you may ask. Well, you can pick up placemats, felt for flowers and banners, and yarn for warm fuzzes at the Ultreya each month. You can also pick up or return items at the Ultreya. There is usually a table near the church’s entrance where items are placed. Or you can find me and hand items to me.

If you’re not available to attend the Ultreya, you can contact me. My email address is [email protected] and phone number is 703- 216-2469. And if you’re concerned about getting an item to me quickly, we can always keep in touch by phone and work out something. If you are willing to serve as Palanca Chairman for your church please fill out the information on the clipboard that I will have at each Ultreya in the front. Please list which items your group is interested in doing, so when I am running low on items I can contact the chairman.

If you are in a reunion group this is a good project that you could do. So, check with your group and see what items you all would love to do. If someone from your church has already signed up then you don’t need to. I am looking for-ward to working with you!

If you would like to get placemats please call Linda Smith

703-216-2469 and she will meet you to get them to you.

Thank you De Colores! And Fly with Christ

From the Emmaus Music Directors, MD’s "Be Strong and Courageous.."

God's word brings us strength and guidance for daily living.

When His word is put to song, we draw strength through

the verses/choruses & more readily put them to memory!

While overseas in very dangerous territory, I recalled this

VBS tune "Have I not commanded you be strong and cou-

rageous, do not be terrified, do not be discouraged for the

Lord your God will be with you wherever you go!"

It empowered me to persevere. Then just this week, some-

one sent a group email encouraging a friend by this same

verse. It's amazing how His word rocks in our memory, and

how drawing on scripture set to music encourages our

souls.

The coffee house held on 7/22/12, at Clarendon UMC was

wonderful and full of fellowship & music. Thank you

Clarendon, and all who participated!! SD Greg Lauer pre-

sented Emmaus information and offered apps and bro-

chures, and shared about God's great grace - what a great

joy. He even threw in some great Louisiana humor!!! -

"statue Beudreaux?" Seeds were planted for others to at-

tend Emmaus and we all worshipped and had fun. It also

lead us to new Emmaus musicians and an additional coffee

house for outreach. God is so very good.

August Ultreya will again be lead by Chrysallis MDs and we

are looking forward to a rocking good time!! Pls join in and

support the celebration. Keep a song in your heart!!

Mary Ann & Jim Krauss Don't let anything steal your JOY!

Outreach Prayers Request

Please in prayer for the following Fourth Day Weekends

and also keep all Fourth Day Brothers and Sisters lifted up

to His throne.

E-162 Team – “Jesus Loves Me” September 13-16, 2012

A Message from the "R"

Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love is from God, and everyone who loves is born from God and knows God. The person who doesn’t love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8 (CEB)

After she was widowed, Grandma Grace came to live at our house when I was almost three years old, and we were roommates for nearly five years. She was a beautiful Chris-tian lady, and—because my parents were both “casual” church-goers—it was Grandma who first introduced me to Jesus. When the sun was shining, she would sit in our back yard with her Bible, her Cokesbury hymnal and her camp-meeting songbook, reading, praying and singing for hours at a time. If the weather didn’t cooperate, she would sit in our bedroom and read and pray quietly. Every night, she would lie in the twin bed next to mine and pray for eve-ryone—her family, her friends, and all of the rest of God’s creation. And it was Grandma who taught me by first Bible songs.

Today, more than half-a-century later, the first song she taught me is still my favorite hymn. When I was called to be the “R” for E-162, I knew immediately that the theme and the theme song for the weekend would be “Jesus Loves Me.” This song, written by Susan Warner for her sister An-na’s book Say and Seal, captures in simple words a mind-

boggling idea: Jesus loves me! And not just me. He loves everyone. Jesus—God Incarnate—loves us. That is why “Jesus Loves Me” is often the first song taught by mission-aries to new converts, why it is one of the most requested hymns by adults at hymn sings. It is why the great 20th theologian Karl Barth said, “The central truth of the Chris-tian faith is this: Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

What an amazing thing! God loves us with an unconditional love. God always loves us. We cannot choose to have him love or not love us. He just does. We don’t have to be good enough or smart enough or religious enough or anything enough. God loves us because of whom—and sometimes in spite of—what we are. His love is embracing. And through that love, God empowers us to love and serve oth-ers and to spread the Good News—no matter how difficult that may be. Our God is with us, and who can stand against us? Finally, God loves us forever, and he never wants to lose us. That is why Jesus promised, “Whoever lives and believes in Me, though they were dead, yet shall the live.” God’s love is eternal.

God has assembled an amazing team of Christian sisters and brothers for E-162. I have been awestruck time and again listening to and watching this team, hearing and see-ing how they already think and act as one. I often think that Heaven must be where we will finally have perfect union with the mind and heart of God and this team has given me many glimpses of that. Jesus shines out of each of these wonderful teammates, and I leave each team meeting humbled, uplifted and blessed. But the team of E-162 knows that we need the support of our wonderful sisters and brothers in the NCAE community. We ask for your prayers for this team and the pilgrims who will come to the mountain in Front Royal in September so that all of our new sisters will be able to walk back down that mountain saying, “Yes, Jesus loves ME!” (And yes, I think that I can hear Grandma Grace whispering softly in the ear of Jesus, a heartfelt prayer for E-162.)

De Colores!

Love and blessings,

Kathy Mae Henry

National Capital Area Chrysalis

From Our Chrysalis Community Lay Director Dear Community, This is my last article as your Chrysalis Community Lay Director and it is bittersweet for me. It has not been an easy year but it has been a good year for Chrysalis be-cause we have accomplished so much. We’ve seen one of the largest January High School weekends in several years with 33 Butterflies. And most recently our Young Adult weekend, which had 15 Butterflies, the largest I’ve ever seen. Still the glory does not belong to the Lay Director, the Board, or even the rest of the Community. The glory goes to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, without whom none of this would have been possible. However, I am thankful for each and every member of this wonderful Community for your faithfulness in God and for your dedication to the min-istry. And I pray that you will continue show your support of Chrysalis when my beautiful sister in Christ, Jo Ann McLean, begins her term as Chrysalis Lay Director on Sep-tember 1

st. She has been such a big help to me throughout

the past year and I know she is going to do a “rockin’ awe-some” job (as the youth say) as Lay Director. Now it’s August and C-82, our summer high school week-end, is just around the corner. Let’s see if we can make this another amazing weekend! If you have a Bug (Caterpillar) application please send it in ASAP! Youth ages 14 to 18 may attend, as long as they have completed their first se-mester of high school. Youth who graduated from high school this year (2012) are also eligible to attend. The deadline to send in applications is August 2

nd.

Please keep the C-82 Team and Caterpillars in your prayers. There are several slots available on the Prayer Wheel if you would like to sign up please go to the NCA Chrysalis Facebook page or send an email to [email protected] .

Several people have requested scholarships this summer and we need of donations for Team and Caterpillars. If you feel led to support Chrysalis in this way, please mail your check directly to NCA Chrysalis at P.O. Box 185, Occoquan, VA 22125-0185 with “scholarship fund” in the memo line.
