It brought back some memories of our trip to the Sunshine Coast and Sue Kijurina produced an excellent presentation and also displayed her painting from one of the many photos taken on the trip. BOOK CLUB

- Pat & Ray Cranfield Most of the Book Club met on Monday 27th May to discuss the book we’d read, “Cutting for Stone” by Richard Varghese. We thought it was very interesting and medically correct, and showed how basic the medical services are in Third World Countries. It was fiction, but strongly based on fact. Our next meeting will be on Monday, 17th June when we’ll share our opinions on our own books.

FROM OUR ROVING REPORTERS:

(Thank you to Ken Starkey & Peter O’Loughlin for their contributions this month, and to Sue Kijurina for her photographs. Linda)

“Whistle Down the Wind”, CTG’s first production this year, which was quite a departure from the norm, is set in a small deeply religious town in Louisiana in the 1950’s and centres on a poor farming family led by father Boone, and his three children, Swallow, Brat and Poor Baby. One day the three children find a stranger hiding in their barn. Unknown to the children, The Man is an escaped convict, but Swallow seizes on the idea that he is Jesus Christ. Meanwhile the town is on the lookout for the runaway convict urged by their Sherriff to stay vigilant. Another professional and enjoyable musical production which featured an amazing computer generated backdrop for scene changes. The entire cast, including twelve children, sang beautifully in particular Rebecca Carter as Swallow and young Rosemary Finnerty as Poor Baby. A terrific musical, enjoyed by our club members, who chatted enthusiastically about the show at Joyce’s ever popular after show Chinese Banquet courtesy of the Flower Drum Restaurant.

It was a lovely but brisk and cool morning in May when a smaller than usual group of intrepid travellers assembled in Narellan for our monthly Probus Club coach trip. We were only going to Bowral, so with time to spare we ventured along the old Hume Highway through all the little villages which dotted the trip south in days gone-by. Along the way we passed under narrow arches of the railway line and over some not so wide bridges that were common along the roads of our past. Arriving in Bowral we were greeted by Craig Robson who was extremely proud of his set-up, having recently moved all his stock from St Peters, a move which took him 18 months of packing and rebuilding his magnificent collection of Antique Mechanical Music (street organs). After a lovely morning tea in what was a very cool large storage building, Craig set about informing us of the history of most of the items on display, explaining to us how the music machines could have been the forerunner of the modern computer. They used “punch cards” similar to what was used on Grandma’s old pianola to operate all the bells and whistles to create the beautiful sounds we all enjoyed.

Autumn Trip into The Highlands – Friday, 17th May 2019

The only disappointment of the day was caused by insurance companies who seem to think that “FRAIL OLD PEOPLE” - they mean US - would not be safe riding a mechanical horse on the merry-go-round and they, the insurance companies, were concerned that we could fall off and injure ourselves, a different story from some 50 or 60 years ago. From here we were “Set Free” to explore Bowral and find something for lunch. Mission accomplished, we completed our day with a trip back along the freeway to Narellan.

PROBUS TRIPS FOR 2019: - Peter O’Loughlin

TOURS UPDATE: Half a year gone. Half a year still to go and still so much travelling to be enjoyed. This month we return to the Science Centre, a hands-on display which is part of the University of Wollongong, then in July our Annual Yulefest this year retuning to Linton Gardens on the Central Coast. At our meeting on Friday I will be collecting payments for both our monthly trip to the Science Centre and deposits ($100) for our trip to Mudgee in March 2020. Also, a note for your diary … in February 2021 another cruise on Sydney’s waterways. This will be a cruise along the Parramatta River with lunch included. Not sure however how far along the river we will get, that will depend on river levels at the time.
