PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I hope that you have all managed to stay warm over these last cold weeks and we look forward to spring when we will welcome some warmer days.

Some of our members have experienced serious illnesses during July. Our thoughts are with Alan Baker, Hugh Macintosh, Pat Marsh and Graham Morcom so we hope they are all on the road to recovery by now.

We are pleased to welcome so many new members to the club and there are some more to come in the next few months. It is great that we have a waiting list of people who wish to join us and keep our club ticking along busily with everyone enjoying all the good activities available. My thanks again to the activities leaders who keep us involved with interesting things to do.

Thanks too to the Craft Group, who keep up the supply of goods to Peter McCallum and Warringal Oncology Departments, and Box Hill, Mitcham and Ringwood Hospitals. These women do a wonderful and worthwhile job to make the lives of patients at these hospitals a little easier and for that we thank them.

We welcome back those members who have been travelling and give our good wishes to the members who will travel in this and next month.

Peter and I will celebrate our Golden Wedding anniversary in September so I will not be chairing the September meeting. My Vice President has graciously accepted to do this job and I know you will give Daryl your whole-hearted support. I look forward to joining you all for the meeting in October. Wendy Fishley

SPEAKERS

It was very interesting to hear from Wendy Lewis, former CEO of Girl Guides Victoria how an organisation in existence for over 100 years can adapt to the many changes in technology to accommodate the young female leaders of tomorrow. We are always grateful to our speakers who volunteer their time to keep us informed of the many changes within our Community, thank you to Joan Planck for offering the Vote of Thanks. It was a much smaller attendance than normal due to many members taking the opportunity to seek warmer weather. We hope to welcome you back to our August meeting. Great Speakers coming up .

August - Jan de Kretzer - Life beyond the Gates.

Jan spent five years living in Government House as the wife of the Governor David de Kretzer. She gives a lighthearted view of her experiences and an insight into the privileged life she shared in her position.

September - Bernie Geary - Victorian

Commissioner for Children and Young People. We are reminded constantly through the media of concerns that effect children and young people in our Community. Bernie Geary has dedicated most of his working life to ensure there is a safe environment to support young people in need. He is widely sought after by the media for his advice.

October- Graeme Robin. The Bigger Things in Life

You will remember the wonderful talk Graeme did for our Club some months ago when he spoke about his adventures into many countries of the world with his car 'Fee'. His trustworthy left hand drive Fiat parked in the car park for all to see Graeme enthralled our members with his great stories. Graeme is back again to entertain us with Part 2, 'The Bigger Things in Life'. Ellen Boyd

HERITAGE HILL MUSEUM & HISTORIC GARDENS

66 McCrae St Dandenong Date: Wednesday 7

th October 2015.

Arrive at Heritage Hill Museum at 9.50am for 10am tour Devonshire Tea included at end of tour Cost $16.50 (for tour of three buildings, gardens & Devonshire tea at conclusion). Heritage Hill comprised of three historic buildings and approximately 1.5 acres of period landscaped gardens. Laurel Lodge (1869), Benga House (1936) and St James Anglican Church (1864) will be included in the tour by volunteer guides. The complex usually has an artist in residence program and often there are exhibits in Laurel Lodge which has recently been renovated. Benga house built in 1936 was designed by renowned architect Fredrick Ballantyne and built by Norman Taylor in the Tudor Revival style, the house expresses the aspirations and developments in domestic housing during the inter-war period. At the time of its construction, it was to be the largest and most expensive house built in the Shire of Dandenong for over a decade. An audio tour and soundscape installation also allows visitors to listen to original recordings from Mrs. Dorothy Hart (owner of Benga house 1936-1987) and several of her maids as they describe life at Benga between 1940-1970. (a reality check for those who lived through these times). The gardens of Laurel Lodge, Benga and St James' Church are all quite different, reflecting the desires of their creators and the diverse uses to which they were put. cont’d p.4

GARDENING GROUP cont’d

Domestic gardens have been an important feature of Australian life since European settlement, both as a source of food and as a place of beauty and recreation. In country towns house blocks of one acre allowed plenty of room for large trees, a vegetable plot, fruit trees, a poultry run and perhaps a cow or horse. It was also fashionable to have large garden beds full of flowers to produce a ‘show’ of massed annuals and perennials. The Benga Garden was designed and tended to by Mrs Hart for over 50 years. It exists today as an exceptional representation of 1930s garden design with its compartmentalised areas, ornamental trees and shrubs, a formal rose garden, perennial garden beds within expanses of lawn, formally designed paths, a pergola and a sun dial. The garden has not been significantly altered since the 1930s and is a noteworthy survival of a garden reflecting the period of its creation, designed and maintained by an enthusiastic amateur gardener. Travel by car pooling, please let Anne or Jeni know if you need a lift. Car parking: enter via McCrae St to church parking area. Reminder this is ONLY 2Hr parking Parking officers are

vigilant in this area. Add you name to expressions of interest list Payment to Anne or Jeni at August or September meeting to confirm your place. For more information on Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens www.heritagehill.com.au Anne Doull & Jeni Moodie

An American tourist on a trip to Ayres Rock suddenly yelled “Stop the bus” and scrambled to the front to get off. He had spotted an aboriginal with his ear to the ground on a track which turned off the main road. “He must be one of your famous black-trackers you have out here,” he said as he ran back to the aboriginal.

“Can you tell me about the last people to pass this way?” enquired the Yank.

“Yeah,” answered the aboriginal and pointing to the wheel tracks he said “It was a Ford utility.”

This did not impress the Yank much. “Anything else?” he asked.

“Yeah. There was ten people in it. Three in the front and seven in the back.”

Now the Yank was impressed. “Anything else?”

“Yeah. The three in the front were blokes with four women and three kids in the back and the truck has yellow wheel caps.”

This amazed the Yank. “And you can tell all that just by putting your ear to the ground?”

“Not really,” said the aboriginal. “I just fell off the plurry thing.”

The grocer was alarmed to learn that Mrs Jones’ weekly order of a dozen cans of pet food was being fed to her husband. “Oh he doesn’t know the difference,” she said. “He even likes it.” “But it could kill him,” protested the grocer. Mrs Jones took no heed, but a month later she entered the shop wearing a black armband. “I told you so,” said the grocer. “I told you that dog food would kill him.” “Oh no, it wasn’t the dog food,” she said. “We were going home the other evening when he sat on the tramline to scratch himself and got bowled over!”

He ambled over and kicked it clear across the river. “What did you do that for?” asked a passing giraffe. “Because I recognized it as the same turtle which took a nip out of my trunk 53 years ago.” “What a memory,” exclaimed the giraffe. “Yes,” said the elephant, “turtle recall.”

in material before that date is welcome to do so. This edition of the newsletter has been printed at the electoral office of

Matthew Guy, Member for Bulleen. When I receive material via email, I will acknowledge receipt as I open it. If an activity is

not updated by the convener, it will disappear. The deadline timeframe is not negotiable. If anyone has general interest

TEA ROSTER

The tea roster does not obligate anyone; it is just a guide to help

spread the load. Supplies are arranged. You need to be at the

hall at around 9.00am to set up and help serve during Fellowship

then clean up afterwards. Please bring two tea towels to dry the

dishes. There is an A4 sheet headed “Fellowship Tea Roster

Duties” in the box with the tea and coffee, explaining what has to

be done. If you are physically unable to carry out the roster

duties, please let us know and we will take your name off the list.

If you are unable to attend on your rostered day, please phone

Adrian or Anne.
