Hello Everyone, Another chilly winter month over with a few white frosty mornings reminiscent of Christmas in July! At least we have had lots of sunny days which are always good for getting out and about, regardless of whether it is something energetic outdoors or just being with friends for coffee. Two highlights for me this month have been “Kinky Boots” and the coach trip to the Tip (Suez Resource Centre). Very different events, but both enlightening. We are so fortunate in the club to have so many people organizing activities for us, so let’s get out there and support them. See you at the meeting. AUGUST GUEST SPEAKER Phillip Bailey Phillip will give us an insight into the life of YEHUDI MENUHIN – PRODIGY AND PHENOMENON and will present some of his music. Yehudi Menuhin, Baron Menuhin, OM KBE (22 April 1916 – 12 March 1999) was an American-born violinist and conductor who spent most of his performing career in Britain. He is widely considered one of the greatest violinists of the 20th Century. Yehudi Menuhin was born in New York City to a family of Belorussian Jews and his first violin instruction was at age 4. His first public appearance was as solo violinist with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1923 (aged 7 years). This is something different to what many may think we might be interested in, but I hope you will be pleasantly delighted in Phillip’s presentation.

“THE WEDDING SINGER” – CAMPBELLTOWN THEATRE GROUP

- SATURDAY, 15TH JULY

“KINKY BOOTS” – CAPITOL THEATRE – WEDNESDAY, 19TH JULY

SUEZ RESOURCE RECOVERY CENTRE/BIRKENHEAD POINT – DAY TRIP

– FRIDAY, 21ST JULY

25 of our members attended the Campbelltown Theatre Group’s production of “The Wedding Singer” based on the Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore movie, but with original music, an amazing cast in fine voice and imaginative, but simple, stage sets. The show was a fun, upbeat musical highlighting 1980’s culture with humour, colour and high energy dance numbers. The show was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish with a predictable happy ending as was our usual after-show Flower Drum banquet organized by Joyce.

Ken Starkey

A group of Probus members were lucky enough to attend the performance of “Kinky Boots” at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday, 19th July. This production featured many of Cindy Lauper’s songs and was billed as being one of the best musical comedies to hit Sydney in years. It lived up to its reputation. The story was about a man who had inherited his father’s shoe factory and had to diversify his product to be successful and keep people employed. He was assisted in this goal by a designer who invented the Kinky Boots. It was another fabulous production of music, dance and song. Thank you, Joyce, for organising yet another wonderful day out. Kathy Smith

Keith surprised us with the perfect morning tea spot beside the Woronora River where we were able to soak up some glorious winter sunshine. We then travelled to the Suez Resource Recovery Centre at Lucas Heights and with our experienced guide, Cheryl, learnt about each of the plant’s processes. The ninety minutes’ tour was indeed very informative and extremely interesting. Who knew that 98% of a mattress could successfully be recycled! We were also intrigued to watch (from a distance) a team of white suited police investigators, systematically sorting through rubbish in an attempt of locate evidence, which would help with a murder case.

Lunch, coffee and shopping followed at Birkenhead Point. Quite a number of bargains made their way back onto the coach for the trip to their new homes! Many thanks to Keith for his great driving skills and huge hip hips to our wonderful Anna for her excellent organisation.

HOLIDAY CHOICES FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS – 2018: Next year (2018) members and their friends currently have three very different options for trips around with our club. Itineraries for all three will be available at our next meeting. In March 2018 we have planned a 4 night holiday on the Eurobodalla Coast, staying in Bateman’s Bay with a variety of things to do that should keep everybody satisfied. We have had a good response to this tour, the cost being only $730.00 pp/ts (for 30 passengers). Deposit for this trip is to be paid by our September 2017 meeting. In September next year, a holiday trip to the Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has been arranged. This will be a 9 day trip, staying 3 nights in Maryborough, with a day trip to the Famous World Heritage Listed Fraser Island, then a further 3 nights on the Sunshine Coast, again with a day trip into the hinterland behind the coast. Travelling from Sydney, we stop in Grafton for the first night and on the way home via the New England Highway, we stop for the last night in Armidale. Cost for this trip with a minimum of 30 passengers will be $1600.00 pp/ts with a deposit being paid by our February 2108 meeting. Finally, Harrington Park Probus Club have extended an invitation to us to join them on a 19 day tour of Tasmania in November, cost based of 30 passengers is only $3800.00 pp/ts, a considerably lower price than that which is charged by Commercial Tour Operators for a similar package. This tour will be travelling by coach from Sydney with two crossings of Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania and then 15 days on the island. Deposits for this holiday are due by November 2017 when a decision will be made as to the viability of running this trip. Please share this information with family and friends as we do need to have sufficient interest in this tour of Tasmania. Travelon Coaches will be providing their services for each of these tours should we have sufficient participation to be able to operate them. I invite everybody to compare the price of any of the above tours with anything that might be operated by any tour company that produces similar tours. Looking to future years of club touring, trips being considered are:

• A “round trip” from Sydney to Mildura then to Broken Hill and home via Dubbo.

• A holiday in the Grampian Mountain region in Victoria.

• A trip in to South Australia and touring the Eyre Peninsular.

• A holiday in North Queensland including Townsville and Rockhampton. With this trip we would

have to consider options - Fly or Train one or both ways then use a local coach operator, travel by coach from Sydney on a circular tour using on own coach company in Sydney. Any input for this will be appreciated. Peter O’
