Hi everybody I hope you're all enjoying the spring weather, as you participate in the many activities that have been organised for us. I know that those of us who went to the Sunshine Coast etc, had a great time, joining in several adventures, and enjoying each other's company. It continues to amaze me that so many of us are able to forge ahead and do things that many younger and more fit people would baulk at. Our other activities were enjoyed by many people during the month. Sorry, Kathy, that you had an accident after the lunch - we're glad to hear you're recovering well. I'm looking forward to sharing enthusiasm for events during October that will keep our brains and bodies active. WHY SENIORS STILL NEED NEWSPAPERS

I was visiting my daughter last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. “This is the 21st Century” she said. “We don’t waste money on newspapers! Here, use my iPad.” I can tell you this … that unlucky fly never knew what hit him!!!

FROM OUR ROVING REPORTERS:

(Thank you to our Roving Reporters and Photographers for this month. I appreciate getting your reports and photos through so quickly after our trip away.)

“SUNSHINE COAST TRIP” – 15TH TO 23RD SEPTEMBER 2018

DAY 1 – CAMPBELLTOWN TO GRAFTON

With an almost full coach, we headed north along the M7, already looking forward to our cuppa and bicces at Raymond Terrace. One moment of excitement was when we saw an almost endless cavalcade of bikers and bikies, police bikes and police cars (lights flashing) heading south on the M2. We assumed it was some sort of memorial drive. We enjoyed a pleasant lunch on the banks of the river at Taree, then continued on crossing many coastal rivers till we reached our overnight stay, the Quality Inn at Grafton. A long day of driving for all, most of all for Keith, our trusty Coach Captain.

Bob Bee DAY 2 – GRAFTON TO MARYBOROUGH

We left Grafton. It was a lovely motel (good food and lots of laughter). Driving along, Keith pointed out the Google vehicle responsible for our mapping etc. (I may be wrong, but it makes a good story). We passed through Casino which is the beef capital of our state. Morning tea was at Kyogle which is the gateway to the rainforest. We proceeded over the range to Rothdowney and then to lunch at Beaudesert, a town believed to have the oldest wooden church in Australia. After a rest stop at Coobulture, we pushed on to our final destination, The Blue Shades Motel in Maryborough. The staff were very helpful and served dinner and breakfast under difficult circumstances. Beds were very comfortable (that’s a must).

DAY 3 – WORLD HERITAGE LISTED FRASER ISLAND

Day three of our tour and we were off to Fraser Island (the world’s largest sand island approximately 123 Km long and 22 Km wide), after an early departure from the River Heads terminus to disembark at Urang Creek. The traditional owners are the Butchulla people.

There is so much to see and to do on the Island however the following is a quick overview of what we experienced during our stay.

Our transport was a bus specifically modified for sand terrain travel and accommodated all of our members together. All tracks on the island are sand and thus our mature bodies were given quite a workout during the day’s travelling.

The Guide was an accomplished driver who also gave comprehensive commentary across the tour, although at around lunch time (scheduled for the Eurong Beach Resort) the capabilities of the “old bus” to deal with the terrain resulted in a mechanical problem which led to us being “rescued” with a replacement vehicle.

The rising tide at the time meant that the driver needed to navigate through softer sand more than was ideal, compared with the compacted sand closer to the surf. However the lost time was recovered and we were able to catch the final ferry for the day back to River Heads.

We travelled for quite a distance along the 75 Mile Beach to view the site of the Coloured Sands, the wreck of the hospital ship SS Maheno, and for some of us a quick light plane trip for views over the coastal fringe.

The Coloured Sands and the wreck of the SS Maheno may not be what some of us remember as the sands are now being encroached by growing vegetation, and the SS Maheno is continually rusting away with sand now covering much of what remains due to tidal action.

We did not see a single Dingo, probably because the families were now tending to new litters.

An occasional Sea Eagle was seen drifting on air currents but too far away for close up views, however still NO Dingoes.

There is much to see and do on the Island and more than can be covered in a single day.

However our other activities included an Eco Boardwalk among the rainforest and a visit to Lake Mackenzie, renowned for its whitest sands and the therapeutic qualities of its crystal blue water.

Flinders, the cat on the Fraser Island Ferry

We ducked into the cabin to get out of the wind, on the crossing to Fraser Island. There was an empty seat. We were told it belonged to Flinders. Demurring to ownership rights, we sat instead beside another PROBUS member on a bench observing Flinders, the ship's cat, walk with an air of ownership among the many legs of the other passengers. The ferry was crowded, standing room only, and every seat was taken except for the one seat. Flinders was enjoying a nibble or two of its kibble when a woman came to the empty seat, politely asking if it was vacant. She was told 'you can fight the cat for it'. Slightly puzzled, she looked down at the cat busy at its food bowl and took a step forward to claim the seat. Like a flash of orange lightning, Flinders leapt in a single bound and claimed 'HER' seat and lay curled up and purring for the rest of the crossing. Pauline Downing

DAY 4 – SIGHTSEEING IN MARYBOROUGH

An easy day today to allow some recovery. Picked up “Mary Poppins” a local guide, beautifully dressed, who explained the history of Maryborough and the development of the city. This is a most impressive city – clean, tidy and well laid out with lots of buildings renovated or presently undergoing renovation. The pride residents have in their properties is obvious as you drive about. James Cook discovered the Mary River, originally named “Wide Bay River” then later changed. Maryborough is a ‘free’ port, i.e. free of convicts, and has 23 churches. It is not overly religious but each cultural group settling here brought their own religion with them. Later we met a guide at the Anzac memorial who introduced us to Captain Duncan Chapman – the first Anzac to step ashore at Gallipoli. The beautiful statue cast in bronze will forever remind future generations of the sacrifices made to keep our country free. Sadly, Capt. Chapman died at Poziers.

DAY 5 – EUMUNDI MARKETS & GINGER FACTORY

YANDINA

After a short stop at the local Post Office, we headed for the local markets at Eumundi. Eumundi Markets are huge – almost everything is available – foods of many kinds, arts and crafts, eyebrow braiding, psychics to massage, something for everyone. I even had time for a haircut. The markets were great for the ladies with plenty of shopping, but the highlight of the day for me was our next stop at the Buderim Ginger Factory in Yandina. A relaxing ride on Moreton the 113 year old Ginger Train through lush sub-tropical gardens surrounding the factory was followed by a very informative factory tour showing the ginger being processed, with a tasting at the end which gave me a new appreciation of ginger. Recipes available at buderimginger.com.

Ralph & Jean Snowball

DAY 6 – MONTVILLE, MALENY & MARY

CAIRNCROSS RESERVE

We set out at 8.40am for a day in the Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast. The scenery was stunning as we wound our way through the towns of Nambour (former home of The Big Pineapple), Palmwoods and Montville, where we had our morning tea following by shopping time in this quaint village. We had a group photo taken in front of the Community Hall before heading to Maleny where we had a delightful lunch overlooking the picturesque Glasshouse Mountains. We were then divided into 3 groups to tour the Mary Cairncross reserve, a great resource for nature and bird lovers and a great Education Centre for students, young and old. We encountered many interesting animals and plants, described well by our very informative guides. Tired, fed and watered, we climbed aboard for a scenic trip home. What a great day … thanks, Peter & Keith.

DAY 7 – NOOSA EVERGLADES CRUISE

After a nice drive along the coast (around many roundabouts), we came to Habitat Noosa and the Everglades on Lake Cootharaba, in Cooloola National Park. When it was revealed that we had to wade in 60 to 70 cm deep water about 80 metres to our cruise boat, some of our people dropped out. The rest of us enjoyed a leisurely cruise across the lake to step ashore at a walk into a "paperbark swamp" to walk about 400 metres looking at unique flora. Back aboard, we wandered through many narrow channels to historic "Harry's Hut”, a left-over from a timber operation from many years ago. We were served a very nice morning tea in a quiet bush setting. While meandering back to base, our two crew members told us many interesting facts and stories about the area, with much droll humour. Humour was required when a cold shower wet our backs as we waded to shore, dried our feet, then had a large lunch at 2.30 pm. Back on the coach, we had a quiet drive back to our hotel in time to relax before dinner. Ray Cranfield

DAY 8 – HOMEWARD BOUND – BIRTINYA TO ARMIDALE

The queue for brekky started at 6.30am just making sure we were ready to say goodbye to Lake Kawana Best Western Plus at 8.30am. On the road home we once again bypassed Brisbane over the Storey Bridge. Morning tea we were welcomed by the lovely staff of Ipswich Information Centre and offered use of tables on their verandah so we could enjoy a cuppa & yummies donated by Linda, Di D., Jeanette & Mary. Sad to see but there was no grass in the parks just dry soil. Next stop Warwick for lunch. As country towns close up shop at midday, the ladies were pleased that the Mall was still open for a dose of therapy shopping. We certainly had a clear run along the Cunningham and New England Highways, unfortunately the countryside was dry with lots of empty or near empty dams so we napped until our next cuppa break at Deepwater Apex Park. After leaving there we saw smoke billowing to the west, undoubtedly a bushfire! As we approached Glen Innes it was good to see some improvement in the grazing paddocks and although there were some interesting streaks of grey in the sky, they weren’t rain clouds. Arriving in Armidale, we were whisked off to dinner in the cottage alongside the motel with its beautiful stained-glass windows for a hearty dinner. No chit chat after, the footy was on TV and we wanted to get back to watch our favourite team vying for a place in the Grand Final – better luck next time Rabbitohs!

Carolyn Cahill

DAY 9 – HOMEWARD BOUND – ARMIDALE TO CAMPBELLTOWN

Unfortunately today we leave Armidale for home, with Sue sharing some very funny memories along the way of when she was at college and teaching there as we travelled through Uralla, a beautiful country town, to our first stop at Walcha for morning tea. We continued along Thunderbolt Way for our lunch stop at Gloucester before boarding the coach again for our final destination, arriving at Campbelltown around 5.35 pm. Our President Ray thanked Peter for his outstanding work on this tour, also our Coach Driver Keith for his courteous manner and very safe driving. He also went on to comment that it was well appreciated by the “Narellan Probus Old Farts”. Mary was also thanked along with all the ladies who made the delicious slices, cakes and biscuits which sustained us for our morning teas. A great time was had by all on this most exciting holiday.

LET’S HAVE A LAUGH Facebook for Seniors

To others of my generation who still do not and cannot comprehend why Facebook exists, maybe try the following as I am doing. Here’s what I am doing to gain better understanding. I am trying to make more friends without using Facebook, but applying the same principles. Everyday I walk down the street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my dead dog and me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, fixing things, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch and doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations and give them a “thumbs up” and tell them I like them. And it works!! I already have four people following me – two police officers, a private detective and a psychiatrist! (Thank you for sharing this with us, Clarice.)

QUOTA CLUB OF LIVERPOOL – 2019 TROTS NIGHT Liverpool Quota are having a Trots Night at Menangle on Saturday, 2 February 2019. There will be tables of 10. As a few of our members have been before, I thought you may be interested and if so, please contact me. My mobile is 0407 940 699. The price has not been set by Menangle Park as yet, and I will advise as soon as I get the details, however it will be the same as walking through the gate. It is NOT a fundraiser as such. There will be a raffle but that is up to you if you want to buy a ticket.

“Ode to an Overture” by Bob Bee

There’s been many an opera Written, I’m sure

Where the only strong memory Is the great overture.

The arias are boring,

The plot is a dud, The choruses dragging,

Like walking through mud.

Many’s the list, Too long to write down

That haven’t a tune Of any renown.

But the piece that starts off Before the curtain is drawn

Is often remembered From dusk until dawn.

So a hint to composers,

If an opera you dare. Write the overture first,

And then stop right there! (Copyright Robert Bee)

“Not Another Hole-in-One” by Bob Bee

The Golden Fleece of golf That makes the pulses run

Is that fluke of flight and bounce The glorious Hole-in-One.

Now Percy is unique

Though his putting’s pretty bad His chipping is abysmal

And his pitching, very sad.

But when Percy’s on a Par 3 It’s London to a Brick

The ball will slam into that hole Jammed against the stick.

He’s done it every single time

For nigh on twenty year It’s hole-in-one, every hole

The blight of outraged peers.

But, he pleads, have pity It’s really not a frolic

My name is Percy Puttingham And I’m a Shotaholic.
