Brothers,

It was an absolute pleasure seeing so many of you at

the 55th Grand Council Convention in San Francisco.

I am truly honored that you selected me to be your

Grand Regent. I greatly appreciate the years of guid-

ance and support so many have offered me throughout

the years. I look back at the experiences I have had on

the Executive Committee and can honestly say that

everyone I have had the pleasure to serve with has

taught me a valuable lesson that I will always carry with

me. Over the next two years, I hope to encourage all

brothers and chapters to be the best they can be for

Kappa Psi. I have already experienced your over-

whelming desire to serve our great Fraternity and look

forward to what will be accomplished this term.

The Executive Committee is hard at work. We are

working to improve our Web site and conducting seri-

ous discussions about the impact realignment will have

on our brothers and chapters. We have created an

Executive Committee blog to help keep everyone up to

date on what all of our officers are working on. Please

check it out at http://kappapsiec.blogspot.com. I would

like for you to share your ideas with others, and our

blog and Facebook page are both great ways to reach

out to the Executive Committee and our Brotherhood.

I would like to challenge all of our brothers to reach out to the graduates around you. While at work, at

school, or at association meetings, ask those around you if they are Kappa Psi and invite them to some chapter

events. Many graduates are willing to come and speak to your class about the career path they chose, and they

can be a great source of knowledge and inspiration. Getting more graduate brothers involved with your chapter

can only strengthen the brothers and the chapters.

Let your enthusiasm for Kappa Psi become infectious and inspire those around you to not just become better

brothers, but to help us become a stronger family.

Fraternally,

Kali Weaver, Pharm.D.

Brothers Unmasked

Ryan’s journey“Do what you love

and you will neverwork a day in yourlife,” is a quote thathelps me rationalizemy painful, continual-ly growing studentloans. My name isRyan Szynkarek, your Delta Nu broth-er from DownersGrove, Illinois. Overthe duration of thisschool year, I will be applying for residenciesand hopefully by next year, I will be practic-ing as a pharmacy resident. I implore you tofollow along for these next two years as Idescribe my pursuit for a residency and howI manage the rigors of a residency if I am for-tunate enough to get one.

Without a doubt, my passion is helpingpeople. Whether it is educating my patientsabout their medications or working on themedical team to optimize my patients’ med-ications, I believe that a residency is essentialin achieving these goals. While I hope I havefully prepared myself for a residency now, Iwas absolutely clueless in my first year ofpharmacy school.

When I started pharmacy school, I easilydrank six energy drinks a day, slept four tofive hours a night, and spent the rest of mytime in class or in the library studying. Youbetter believe I knew what time the libraryopened and closed on Friday, Saturday, andSunday. For some reason, I thought gradesmeant everything and that if I did well, itwould somehow guarantee me a residency. Then one day at a residency panel, the resi-dent told me I had been wasting my life awayin the library (or at least that is how I inter-preted her advice). She informed me that if astudent studies all day in the library, thisprobably means they have no extracurricularactivities or leadership roles to speak of. Ifthis is the case, then the residency programactually expects the student to have a 4.0GPA. Having exceptional grades does notdemonstrate how well the student will be

able to manage the stressful life of a residen-cy. After that conversation, I had come to therealization that I had been putting 100 per-cent of my efforts into something that wasonly demonstrating a sliver of my potential. From that point on, I restructured my goalsand my sleep hygiene, kidneys (caffeine),and personal life were thankful for it.

The transition from a lackluster life in thelibrary toward a path of involvement was anabrupt and necessary change. Starting on mynew path, I began actively volunteering, join-ing committees, pursing leadership roles, andgoing to conferences (all of which Kappa Psireadily offers). Taking on these responsibili-ties helped develop my teamwork skills sinceroles in committees and leadership positionsare almost always a team-based effort. Theseroles were quite challenging at times, espe-cially with therapeutics exams approaching. Iwas forced to develop exceptional time man-agement skills. These roles gave me greatnetworking opportunities. Developing rela-tionships with members within my futureprofession has given me an outlet to ask intu-itive questions and find mentors. Most of all, these roles were fun because sharing timewith your friends and giving back to your pro-fession is remarkably rewarding.

Making sure my curriculum vitae (CV) isup to date is a great place to start. If you donot have a CV, I would recommend startingone now. If you do not feel like starting one,the very minimum you need to do is to startwriting down your accomplishments, volun-teer activities, and any contributions youhave made toward pharmacy. If you do notknow how to start a CV, then Google how todo it, ask your peers for theirs, buy books tai-lored to pharmacy CVs, and/or go to CVbuilding workshops. Once you have it com-pleted, let another set of eyes look it over. Iassure you this will take longer than youexpect so start early.

With my CV up to date, I am planning onattending ASHP’s Midyear Clinical Meeting& Exhibition. At this exhibition I will get thechance to have a one-on-one conversationwith either the resident or the residency pro-gram director. Currently, I have been identi-fying programs I am interested in by reading

through ASHP’s residency directory and byreading each program’s Web site.Nevertheless, the information about a pro-gram will not give me the entire picture. Oneshould have questions that cannot bedescribed on paper for each desired residen-cy, and the residency showcase is wherethese questions will be answered. The infor-mation I acquire by doing research, alongwith going to the residency showcase atMidyear (or even at your local ASHP), willgive me a more dynamic picture of the resi-dency program. When I went last year, I trulyrealized that the showcase is for YOU tointerview the residencies. Some fast tips forMidyear: dress as professional as possible,ALWAYS act professional, and go to Midyearprepared and with a purpose . . . don’t letopportunity pass you by. Best of luck to youall! —Fraternally, Ryan Szynkarek

Christine’s journeyGreetings broth-

ers of Kappa Psi! Myname is Christine“IHOP” Heng and Iam an initiate ofEpsilon Eta chapterin Bradenton,Florida, and current-ly a fourth-year stu-dent at Lake ErieCollege of Osteo -pathic Medicine’sSchool of Pharmacy.I was given the opportunity to contribute a lit-tle piece on my experiences with residencies. This little piece will let you follow me alongmy journey in applying for residency, hope-fully getting a residency, and ultimately figur-ing out what I want to contribute to the won-derful world that is pharmacy as I do my resi-dency and beyond.

For the most part, I’ve been interested inresidency since my first year and have triedto take every opportunity afforded me sincethen to learn all I can about this process. Asof late, I’ve been looking more closely intodifferent residencies and trying to narrowdown where it is I want to go and submerg-

Behind the Scenes: The Journey from pharmacy student to pharmacy residentWelcome to part one of hopefully an eight-part series following Brothers Ryan Szynkarek and Christine Heng’s journey

through their last academic year in pharmacy school to pursuing a pharmacy residency post graduation. Through thisseries, we will follow them both through the process of what it will take to be a pharmacy resident and with any luck, theywill tell about the experience of what it is like to be a resident.

ing myself wholeheartedly in choosing theright residency for me. There seems to be aresidency to catch just about any fancy youmay have in pharmacy. It’s been a little bit ofan overwhelming experience to say the least, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

As one who hasn’t had much experience inthe pharmacy prior to school, I like to keepmy mind open. Lately, I’ve developed aninterest in ambulatory care and will have tosee how that develops. For now, I’m open toexperience and haven’t set my mind to justone specialty. Currently, I’ve only had tworotations—one in ambulatory care at a home-less clinic and my second at BayfrontMedical Center in acute care medicine. I’mabout to start my third/fourth rotation at BayPines VA in St. Pete, Florida, a two-monthlong rotation in ambulatory care and am look-ing forward to it (wish me luck!).

For now, I will continue my search for theright residency for me. Pretty soon I’ll bebeginning that arduous task of sending in myapplications and hopefully getting those everimportant interviews. Until then, I’ll keep youup to date on my progress. Lastly, brothers, before we part, I just want to thank you forgiving me this opportunity to share my littlejourney. Hopefully, I can give you someinsight into what really goes into this andmaybe even entertain you along the way!Until next time, be safe and as always, KappaPsi for Life! —Fraternally, Christine Heng

Pejman Ahmadi elected president of SNPhNCalifornia Northstate College of Pharmacy Brother Pejman (Pej) Ahmadi was recently elected president-elect of the

Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) at the 2011 National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, this pastsummer. Coming from a new pharmacy school in California, Pejman had to overcome the obstacle of the school notbeing well known and had to work very hard at networking and getting his name out there. With lots of encouragementand support from family, friends, faculty, and Kappa Psi brothers, such as Dr. Eric Gupta, Pej was able to attain his goal.

SNPhA is an educational service association of pharmacy students who are concerned about pharmacy and healthcarerelated issues, and the poor minority representation in pharmacy and other health-related professions. SNPhA chaptersare primarily found at pharmacy schools in the Eastern and Midwestern states. One of Pej’s goals is to increase the num-ber of SNPhA chapters nationwide, with a greater focus on the West Coast. Being that Pej is from the West Coast, hewould love for any Kappa Psi brothers interested in SNPhA to contact him about chartering a new chapter! The brothersof Epsilon Iota are so proud and would like to congratulate Brother Pej for his accomplishment.

Withthe help of their editing skills, wemade videos that showed what KappaPsi meant to us and how theFraternity enriched our lives. Ourrush meetings were filled with heart-felt speeches from Brothers OjasShah and Anuja Vallabh whoexplained what “brotherhood” meantto them. To make our pledge eventsinteractive, we organized an eventcalled “Taylor Street Night,” where allthe pledges visited some of the

School has started and the brothersof Kappa Psi are excited to be back. It’s great to see our brothers again.

Our pledge week was wildly suc-cessful. We brought the entire schoolout to the bowling alley for some fel-lowship and to talk to the new stu-dents about Kappa Psi. Everyone hada great time. Kappa Psi also invitedthe new students to a local pizza joint(Pazzo’s) to take a break from classesand officially meet the officers. To endthe pledge week, Brother DougDeitemeyer invited every brother andpotential pledge to his house for aluau. It was a great way to partake insome music and fellowship.

Upsilon chapter was also fortunateenough to organize the fourth annualUK Healthcare College’s Tailgate forthe UK/Florida football game. Thegoal of the Tailgate is to build relation-ships between the colleges so thatonce we graduate, we can facilitateinter-professional cooperation. Wesucceeded quite remarkably. We hadmore than 500 students participate. We were lucky enough to have a bandfrom the medical school play classicrock songs for us and there was plen-ty of pizza and drinks to go around. Itwas by far the best tailgate yet.

Upsilon has also been fosteringbrotherhood by participating in UK’s

actives’ homes in groups and got toknow them on a personal level whileplaying games such as Rock Band,Charades, Empire, etc. Our viceregent, Robin Zhou, pledge momLinda Sok, and pledge dad BrookYohannes did an amazing job coordi-nating the rush and pledge events.

Chi chapter had an excellent startto the year with a number of profes-sional activities. With the Province V’sproposed Philanthropy Challenge inmind, our brothers have continued togive back to the community. At theAmerican Diabetes Association’s Tourde Cure event, brothers cheered forbikers as they returned from theirride. They also helped the organizersclean, pack, and take down the event. At the National Kidney Foundation’s

mobile event, brothers performed freehealth care screenings. Brothersworked at the body mass index anddiabetes stations where we recordedeach patient’s blood glucose values. We are also proud to support the St.Columbanus Church food pantry onthe south side of Chicago, where ourbrothers helped bag donated food.Nearly 500 low-income familiesshowed up to receive food assistancefor the week. In addition to theseevents, Chi brothers have been volun-teering at health care screeningbooths and after-school programs forlocal schools. The Psi chapter began this academ-ic year with several of our membersattending the GCC in San Francisco.

Our annual rush week kicked offwith a Hawaiian themed luau at theKappa Psi house, which included ourannual pig roast for all Kappa Psialumni. Although rain blew in halfwaythrough the event, all had a greattime. The majority of the P1 class waspresent, and this was an excellentopportunity to meet the futurepledges of Kappa Psi. As a new addi-tion to our rush week, a “Yacht Club”themed event was thrown at thehouse. All agree that it was a hugesuccess. Rush week concluded withour annual Kappa Psi formal inMemphis, Tennessee. Despite the factthat a portion of our chapter is locatedin Knoxville, several brothers madethe trans-state drive to attend formal, and meet the future pledges. A mas-querade ball was the theme for for-mal, which included a “Best in Mask”competition. Although there weremany amazing masks, two winnerswere ultimately chosen. One was soimpressive that it now has a place inthe Kappa Psi office of our brand newpharmacy building.

This semester, the brothers havevisited the Veterans Administration tohand out coffee and speak to the finemen and women who have given somuch to make this country what it is.Future events include volunteering atthe Ronald McDonald House and vari-ous health fair events.

Our chapter had the great pleasureof granting a wish to a terminally illchild by sending her to Walt DisneyWorld. The funding that allows us to“Make-A-Wish” is partially raisedthrough our annual Date Auction/Meet the Brothers Night. This eventnot only allows the pledges to get toknow the brothers better, but also tohave the opportunity to bid on a broth-er, or fellow pledge, with the high bid-der winning a ‘date.’ Proceeds exceed-ed $2,000 and will help make anotherchild’s dream come true in 2012.
