Dear Brothers of Kappa Psi,

As I write this letter, the fall semester is underway and so is pledg-ing. This time of year always brings a smile to my face and warmth tomy heart, as I see the bright young P1 students starting to get used to

this whole pharmacy school environment, andthe P2s walking around with pride in their stepbecause they are no longer P1s.

But the faces I enjoy seeing most are the P1pledges for Kappa Psi. The sense of enthusiasmand pride they exhibit serves as a constantreminder of how great Kappa Psi really is.Think back, if you will, to your pledging days. Doyou still remember the excitement you felt to bejoining Kappa Psi? Maybe you had a friend whowas going to join Kappa Psi, so you decided topledge also. Or maybe you were a legacy and had

heard about Kappa Psi since you were a kid, and couldn’t wait to be aKappa Psi like your dad was. Or maybe you just thought that theKappa Psi just seemed like a cool bunch of students to hang out with.

Regardless of the impetus for your decision, I’m sure those days ofpledging were filled with excitement and anticipation for the day youwould become Kappa Psi.

And it is those happy and joyous memories that I want you to thinkabout. Is a smile coming to your face when you think of the day whenyou finally got to wear the Kappa Psi letters? I know I think fondly ofthat day.

So what is the purpose of this trip down memory lane?Well, first off, I just thought it would be great for me to talk about

something happy in one of my letters to you brothers. But secondly, Ihoped to remind you of why you joined Kappa Psi in the first place.

I sometimes give the example that joining Kappa Psi is like gettingmarried. Just think about it. When you get married, you say “till deathdo us part” and with us it’s “Kappa Psi for Life.” And just like in a mar-riage, things are not always great and there can be a tendency to growout of love. There can be a tendency to focus more on the bad timesthan on the good ones. And after decades of being married, you mayforget what you loved so much about your spouse in the first place.

But if you remember that the bad times just make you appreciatethe good times even more, and that even though things change, youcan still find something you really love about Kappa Psi, then you canreinvigorate your relationship with Kappa Psi all over again.

Don’t let the daily grind keep you from remembering that KappaPsi is for Life and that there is still a lot of life left in Kappa Psi.

So rekindle that Kappa Psi fire. Take the time to visit your old chapter or go to the Province meeting. It may feel uncomfortable atfirst, and you may think that you really don’t know Kappa Psi anymore. But if you just take that first step, you will find the Kappa Psi brothersto be as much fun and as cool a bunch of people as you remember.

And if you weren’t all that crazy about the brothers in your collegiate chapter, the good news is that we have a whole new groupof brothers for you to get to know. We need you to come back to us.

Kappa Psi for Life doesn’t mean that Kappa Psi should be yourwhole life—just that it should always be a part of your life.

At least that’s the way I think about it.Can’t wait to see you.

So many times we have heard it said that “Kappa Psi is a pro-fessional fraternity.” At the various chapter meetings,Province conclaves and even GCC, if we collected a dol-

lar for each time someone said, “Kappa Psi is a professionalfraternity,” there would be no reason to sell raffle tickets toraise money. If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it athousand times. But what does it really mean? How dowe make it more of a real practice and less of a slo-gan? What is the true definition of Kappa Psi profes-sionalism?

While there are varied definitions of the terms “profes-sional and professionalism,” the Merriam-Webster OnlineDictionary has a very concise explanation of these terms. Itdefines “professional” as: “relating to, or characteristic of a pro-fession; characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethicalstandards of a profession; exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace; engaged inby persons receiving financial return; following a line of conduct asthough it were a profession.”

The same resource defines the term “professionalism” as: “Theconduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a professionor a professional person.”

The ideas that are offered by Merriam-Webster are all correct, and I am sure that many of my fellow students can’t wait until wecan join those who are “engaged in receiving financial gain” withinthe profession of pharmacy. But the two I would like to concen-

trate on are “characterized by or conforming to the techni-cal or ethical standards of a profession” and “the con-

duct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a pro-fession or a professional person.”

You see, while the rest of these definitions dealwith what a person does, these two definitions

deal with who a person is. It appears clear tome now that true professionalism deals morewith the character and discipline of a Kappa

Psi and goes beyond the programs and eventsthat we do as brothers. As humans, we become

the habits that we practice, and the only way forKappa Psi to truly be a professional fraternity is for

our habits and daily practices to become more thanmeaningless rituals. They have to become active parts of

our character and seen as natural expressions of who weare as a Fraternity.

So where does this all begin? How can our chapters produce“professional Kappa Psi brothers” from the diverse backgroundsand personalities that our Brotherhood is selected from? It seemsclear that the process of developing professionalism begins withthe proper level of discipline within the chapter. The use of ourRituals and adherence to our Constitution and By-Laws can aid inhelping our brothers realize the value found in being “character-ized by or conforming to the ethical standards of Kappa Psi.”When we can teach discipline through proper pledging processes,

The Foundation forBy Kathryn V. Kropp, Regent (Delta Xi)

and proper methods of conducting our chapter business, it willhelp all brothers to value “the conduct, aims, or qualities that char-acterize or mark. . . the ideals of Kappa Psi.”

Our chapters may not hold the answers for every issue, but theyare the foundation upon which we will be able to build stronger, more professional brothers. While every chapter will add its ownaccent to the process, if we continue to honor the traditions ofKappa Psi, we will be on the way to producing brothers who areprofessionals, rather than ones who merely act professionally. When we learn to honor things such as being on time to meetings, and utilizing our Password and Grip, we will be able to appreciatethat true professionals all have identifying and unifying practices, which hold special significance. If our brothers can learn to respectour history, our commitment to community service, and proud

legacy of leadership, they will understand how important it is forus to represent Kappa Psi with dignity and professionalism in allareas of life.

We can build brothers who are truly professional if we encour-age our chapters to be more professional in how they handle theirmeetings, socials and events. Kappa Psi will be more of a “profes-sional fraternity” when we as brothers will be equipped by ourchapters to be more professional, rather than having to act moreprofessionally. As a regent, I know that it can be hard, but thechapter is where it all begins, or ends, depending on whether youare successful or not. So let’s all do our best to encourage activitiesand ideals that will help to strengthen the foundations of profes-sionalism in our chapter.

Blessed with Mentorsand Fond Memories

hen I was initiated into Kappa Psi(Beta Epsilon, University of

Rhode Island), I was blessed tohave two great mentors, Dr. GeorgeOsborne and Dr. NormanCampbell. They immedi-ately instilled in me thatbeing a brother carriedresponsibilities: to theprofession, to my broth-ers, and, most important-ly, to myself. To animpressionable youngman, these two brotherswere role models whoshaped my life. I took myresponsibilities very seri-ously since I was the firstof my family to have even graduated fromhigh school, let alone being a professional. Iknew then that I needed to give back to myprofession and to my Fraternity that wouldhelp me succeed. My brothers and mentorshad more faith in me than I had in myself. In 1980, I was lucky enough to have had theopportunity to be appointed as editor ofTHE MASK. Then Grand Regent, DeweyGarner had confidence in me and allowedme to be the editor. That appointmentbegan my being able to give back to ourFraternity in a concrete manner. I was edi-tor for 15 years. I consider that time to havebeen when I made my greatest contribution

to our beloved Fraternity. With the supportof the Grand Regents, the ExecutiveCommittee, and Executive Director BobMagarian, I was able to publish 60 issues ontime and within budget. The years that Boband I spent as employees of the Fraternity,as well as brothers, were most enjoyable. We comforted and supported each other atevery opportunity. Never once did Bob havea negative word to say about anyone. I hadthe opportunity to work with many GrandRegents, each having their own strengths;but they were always supportive of ourefforts and each did what they thought wasbest for Kappa Psi. I have favorite memories

of all of them, especially WR Smith, whomade the Fraternity his life’s work, and PatWells, who always took his role seriouslybut had the great ability to laugh at himselfand sometimes, in a gentle, loving way, laughed at me. All of the Grand Regents Iworked with were supportive, understand-ing, and committed to doing a great job. Iwas lucky to have been elected president ofthe College Fraternity Editors Association, agroup of editors of fraternal organizations.Like every group I join, I also was commit-ted to the cause and was honored to receivethe Marilyn S. Ford Award given for excep-tional service to the association. When I

The purpose of this series is to let the members of Kappa Psi see what

this is an enjoyable trip down memory lane. —Johnny Porter, Editor of THE MASK

decided that it was time to step down as edi-tor, our Fraternity was lucky to haveBrother Porter step in as editor. He does awonderful job, taking THE MASK to thehighest level in fraternal journalism. Beingan editor is not an easy task. There aredeadlines, recalcitrant chapters, and alwaysbudgetary constraints.

When I left the editorship, I was left witha void in my Kappa Psi life so I ran for theoffice of Grand Historian. History hasalways been a passionate hobby for me, so itwas a natural fit. The more senior brotherswill easily remember that this was not myfirst foray into running for national office, asI had been an unsuccessful candidate manytimes before. In truth, losing those electionstaught me a lot about myself and my com-mitment to our Fraternity. I then was luckyenough to continue serving on the EC asGrand Vice Regent and then elected asGrand Regent in San Diego. As GrandRegent, I found my best supporters and, when needed, my greatest critics in the PastGrand Regents. They were always effusivein their praise and gentle in their criticism. So in total, on a national level, I servedKappa Psi for 24 years. As I reflected on thistopic of my memories, I was continuallystruck by the fact that the future of ourFraternity was in great shape in that thenewer brothers had the same hopes anddreams and commitment we all have.

I have many fond memories of beingGrand Regent. The Providence Graduatechapter anniversary dinners were probablythe highlight as I reflect. It is not that they

were overly grandiose, well attended orpompous. They are my favorite because theGraduate chapter would give scholarshipsto brothers in the name of Norm Campbell,George Osborne, and Peter Feeney, abrother who passed away soon after gradu-ating. The most emotional time of my GrandRegent service was presenting the Order ofthe Golden Mortar Award to BrotherAnthony Solomon. Also in attendance wasanother brother who had already receivedhis Golden Mortar, John Campoli. Now,many of you will not know these two broth-ers, but they were instrumental in mybecoming a pharmacist. They owned phar-macies in my neighborhood; they were myfamily pharmacists. I did not know theywere Kappa Psi brothers; they did not real-ize they were influencing my life. So even as

a child, Kappa Psi brothers were influencingmy life, as they would forever—all theKappa Psi Brothers. You should realize thatyou influence others even when you do notexpect to.

I would be remiss if I did not mention theother brother whom I presented a GoldenMortar to that same night . . . Brother NormCampbell. With tears in my eyes and agrateful heart, when I presented BrotherNorm with his Golden Mortar certificate, Ifelt the full circle of life, the giving back, thetrue bonds of Brotherhood as I was able tohonor him for his fraternal friendship. Here-instilled in me that Kappa Psi is for life.

I again thank all the brothers of ourbeloved Fraternity for allowing me to serveour Order and allowing me the privilege ofcalling you brother.

Another year at the College ofPharmacy has begun and Kappa PsiEpsilon chapter is ready to continueour service projects, promote theprofession of pharmacy, and havefun together as brothers. With anewly elected executive board, wehave many fresh ideas to make thisyear even better. For example, weimplemented a technology commit-tee which is helping to build a Website where brothers in ourchapter can visit to learn aboutupcoming philanthropy projectsand social events. Gone are thepaper sign-ups, as the Web siteallows brothers to register for theevents online. Along with a new e-board, we are looking forward towelcoming new brothers to ourchapter this fall. Currently, we have16 students participating in the

pledging process. We are veryexcited to welcome them into theFraternity.

To recap our summer activities, several brothers volunteered atCamp SuperKids, a camp for chil-dren with asthma. Epsilon also pre-pared and served a delicious mealat the Ronald McDonald Housenear the University of Minnesotacampus. Both events resulted inmuch success, and we will continueto participate in these service activi-ties this coming year. We continuedto staff the dispensing pharmacy atthe free, student-run PhillipsNeighborhood Clinic (PNC)throughout the summer, whichserves patients in need of healthcare and essential medications whocould otherwise not afford it. those not on the tour were asked tocook and clean. An endless supplyof meat and vegetables were mari-nated and cooked on three grillsand were then served to the alumniand guests upon their return.Overarching it all though—over thewine and the food and the barbecueand the cold drinks—was the com-ing together of the past and the pre-sent. The alumni were able to meetmany of the neophytes for the firsttime and share with them theimportant role Kappa Psi played intheir own lives.

After hosting two big events, thebrothers of Gamma Nu were fortu-nate enough to be able to enjoy aweekend away from it all out camp-ing by a lake. At the retreat, thelack of structure was the blisswhich was most enjoyed as anescape from the heavily structuredweeks of class, lab and discussion. Some sat on the shore fishing. Afew swam around in the lake. Somecould only manage getting in up totheir knees. One even managed toswim a seemingly endless distanceout to an island in the middle, and

then back. For those not excited bya lake, many spent the afternoonsimply throwing the footballaround, getting the barbecue ready. As the sun set, the fun picked upwith an endless supply of food com-ing off the grill (including somefamily secrets which were passeddown) and endless refreshmentsand games. (Not as enjoyable werethe wake-up raids on people whowere sleeping in their cars at 3 a.m.. . . not cool.) In attendance wereseveral alumni who took their timeto come out with the collegiatebrothers as well as many of ourthird years on rotations who wereable to escape for a weekend. In theend, a successful retreat led to a tonof fun and the strengthening of theBrotherhood.

Finally, this month we celebratedthe 48th year of the Gamma Nuchapter at Pacific. Again, there wasthe strong presence of alumni andbrothers on rotations as we cele-brated our birthday with dinner, watching our Intramural A-LeagueFootball team win, and going outthat night to celebrate our history. It was the perfect way to rememberwho we are and where we comefrom as individuals and as a frater-nity while we celebrate the start ofanother great year.

Of course, no organizationshould operate without beingsocially responsible, and our chap-ter has proven that success andconsiderateness can go hand inhand. This year, Delta Xi is pleasedto continue its environmentally con-scious efforts to help our pharmacyschool recycle paper. Throughoutthe school, we have set up red andgray bins to collect paper discards.Every Friday, these bins are thencollected by our brothers and trans-ported to the local landfill to berecycled. While Delta Xi has manyupcoming activities, our greatestendeavor so far has been tofundraise. Thanks to our hardworking fundraising chair, MichelleChoi, our brothers have hosted(and will be hosting) numerousfundraisers such as car washing, selling Joe Corbi’s products, sellingT-shirts, and sponsoring a socialevent for P1s. “I’m glad we're doingfundraisers so that we can do moreprojects for our community,”Brother Abraham Li said whenasked about what he thought offundraising. With the semester infull swing and the whole year aheadof us, Delta Xi only has more tolook forward to.

The Delta Sigma chapter wasvery busy both in the classroomand with pledge events for the newfirst-year class that began in June.We kicked off the summer quarterwith a get-together at Fox andHound on the second day of class-es, so we could meet the new stu-dents and they could get to knowKappa Psi. This event was followedby two other rush events: a sports-themed bowling night and apotluck/game night. During thegame night, we played Twister,Catch Phrase, and other games.

We also held Pledge during thesummer quarter because the sec-ond-year pharmacy students wereleaving for rotations for the fallquarter. With the third-year phar-macy students starting rotations atthe end of the fall quarter, the firstyears will be spending most of theirtime with the second-year mem-bers. The pledge events included acar wash, the pinning ceremony, arevealing of the brother activity inwhich pledges were divided intoteams and answered questionsabout Kappa Psi, the big brotherrevealing, a luau for pledges andactives to mingle, Jeopardy to onceagain test our pledges’ knowledgeof the Fraternity, and finally initia-tion. Initiation night was a lot of funand a bit hectic as we initiated arecord-setting 47 brothers into ourchapter. The pledging process wasan enjoyable experience and verywell planned, thanks to our pledgemasters Mallory Hoy and TriciaMarie Rader.

Outside of the pledging process, the active brothers of our chapterpartnered with Rubio’s to raisefunds for our chapter. Kappa Psi Fraternity brotherswere busy this summer planningthe events for the upcoming year, including rush events, communityservice events, and preparation forthe spring Province 2009 meeting.

The rush events were very suc-cessful including an after school icecream social, a trip to the FremontExperience in downtown LasVegas, cosmic bowling at SunsetStation, a barbecue in the park, anda UNLV/UNR football game. Theseevents have provided pledges andcurrent brothers with a great oppor-tunity to establish a support net-

work while having fun at the sametime. The pinning ceremony washeld on September 26, and we wel-comed 21 new brothers into theFraternity. We also established aBig Brother/Little Brother pro-gram to ensure that all the newbrothers from the first-year classwere able to get individualizedguidance and support from theirbig brothers from the second-yearclass. We hope this idea will onlystrengthen the bond that fraternitybrothers should share.

The brothers of Delta Tau arededicated to providing communityservice. Some Kappa Psi brotherselected to help educate adolescentsthis summer by participating on theDrug Abuse Awareness Team inJune. The presentation educatedmore than 150 students enrolled in

summer health classes at a localhigh school. Also, a few of the cur-rent officers worked industriouslyon a proposal to help recycle paperat the University of SouthernNevada. This proposal is currentlyawaiting approval. We realize thebest way to start getting green is tostart with ourselves. Collecting therecycling bins will certainly be astep in the right direction. In addi-tion, we are proud to announce thatwe have established an ongoingpartnership with Habitat forHumanity. We currently plan onvolunteering on the secondSaturday of each month in the fallto ensure that people in need areable to have a nice home. SomeKappa Psi members raised moneyfor diabetes by participating in theannual Diabetes Walk.

Several officers of Kappa Psi were present for the installation of Epsilon Epsilon chapter, including Vishal Patel, Tu Nguyen, Thomas Garza, MichaelVeronin, Dr. Lawrence Brown, Dan Ly, Kevin Vu, and Dr. Andrew Frasco. Also present were brothers from Delta Delta and Epsilon Beta and Dr. Amber Watts (far left). A portrait of Representative Rangel hangs on the wall behind the group.

The Epsilon Epsilon chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternitywas installed at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Irma Lerma

Rangel College of Pharmacy on August 23, 2008. The day began with theconclusion of our initiation process, which took place in the FoundersRoom of the Texas A&M University—Kingsville campus. Once the cere-mony was complete, Mr. Kevin Vu, Mr. Thomas Garza, Mr. Vishal Patel,Mr. Tu Nguyen, Mr. Dan Ly, and Dr. Michael Veronin were welcomedas brothers of the Fraternity. Grand Regent Lawrence Brown and GrandCounselor Andrew Frasco administered the final degrees of initiation. They were assisted by our brothers from Delta Delta (from theUniversity of Houston) and Epsilon Beta (from the University of theIncarnate Word).

The ceremony was the culmination of several months of work, stretch-ing back to the previous spring semester. We had encountered difficul-ties finding Fraternity alumni in the region who could administer thepledge process, and the college had no faculty alumni able to act as ourGrand Council Deputy. To resolve this, Mr. Dan Ly and Mr. Kevin Vucontacted Delta Delta, petitioning to pledge under their chapter. Mr.Kevin Vu also met with Dr. Michael Veronin, a respected professor atour college, who volunteered to become our GCD even though he wasnot an alumnus of the Fraternity. With approval from the Central Office,we spent the next several weeks pledging under Delta Delta and prepar-ing Dr. Veronin for initiation into the Fraternity. Delta Delta performedthe first degree of our initiation so that the remaining ceremonies couldtake place on our campus.

Once initiation was complete, the chartering ceremony began at theCollege of Pharmacy building. Grand Regent Brown and Grand

Counselor Frasco shared words of encouragement, inspiration, andadvice for our chapter. Dr. Michael Veronin was presented theRecognition Button for accepting the duties of Grand Council Deputy.Grand Regent Brown noted that it is impressive enough for an alumnibrother to become a faculty GCD, but to be willing to accept both thatduty and initiation as a brother was truly remarkable. Mr. Kevin Vu waspresented with the Recognition Button for his outstanding work ethicand dedication during the pledging and chartering process.

Looking forward, we have several projects underway to serve and ben-efit our community, and we have already taken on our first pledges!Epsilon Epsilon’s Beta class will be the first to be pledged and initiatedentirely at the Texas A&M College of Pharmacy. We are proud to notethat Beta class draws from the entire student body of our young collegeand includes P1, P2, and P3 students. Additionally, Dr. Amber Watts, who recently joined our college, agreed to be co-faculty advisor for ourchapter. She has already given us invaluable advice for our projects andfundraisers.

It would be impossible to list everyone who has helped us throughoutthe process, but we will try! We owe more than words can express toDelta Delta, who took us in and molded us into the brothers we aretoday. We could never have finished the process without the assistanceof Grand Regent Brown, Grand Counselor Frasco, and all of the mem-bers of the Grand Council who helped steer us along the way. Of course,we cannot forget Epsilon Beta and the region alumni, who offered much-appreciated support and encouragement. We share your high expecta-tions for our chapter and will work to make Epsilon Epsilon worthy ofKappa Psi.

Province IIIGreetings to all brothers from

Province III! Just as with many ofyou, we are all in the midst of oneof the most important aspects of theFraternity—pledge season. Let usall hold fast to instilling our idealsin each pledge and ensuring theircommitment to Kappa Psi lest wedilute the Brotherhood. Several ofour chapters have taken theNational Pledge Project by thereins and are making phenomenalheadway in the ways of bringingalumni back into an active and con-tributing status. Iota’s pledges havealready begun acquiring contactinformation from a list of about 400

of their alumni thus far. The broth-ers at Gamma Xi are also workingto improve their already stellaralumni relations.

Special congratulations go toProvince III’s newest chapter,Epsilon Delta, for exceeding theirexpectations on developing theirchapter. They are proving what wealready know: Kappa Psi is one ofthe best things the pharmacy pro-fession has—if not the best. We areleaders. Already, in their first yearof being a chapter, Brothers JoshuaSpackey and Shana Humes ofEpsilon Delta have earned distin-guished awards from their COP forleadership and service. Province IIIis also grateful to announce that theGCDs at both Iota (Dr. Ed Soltis)and Delta Lambda (Dr. MichaelAdams) earned the GCD Certificateof Excellence Award.

In an effort to promote the pro-fession of pharmacy and to improvepatient outcomes in the community,Province III is continuing theirPatient Medical Record (PMR) phil-anthropy project. Several of ourchapters, namely Theta, Iota andSigma, have made some headwaywith this project. One of the maingoals of the project is to providecommunity residents with adetailed, yet wallet-sized formwhich will provide necessary infor-mation to all those in the health

care system. The creativity of eachchapter in promoting the PMR pro-ject is quite amazing. Sigma notonly raised more than $700 via aspelling bee for the project, but hasalso developed window decals.Theta has set up booths in pharma-cies to target patients directly, andIota has connected with patientsenrolled in the Diabetes 10 CityChallenge.

Province III would also like tocongratulate Brother Johnny Porteron becoming the new ExecutiveDirector. If he puts as much effortinto being Executive Director as hehas put into THE MASK, Kappa Psiwill grow exponentially.

The Kappa Psi LifeRecently, my Epsilon Beta brothers and I were privileged to

attend the chartering of our newest chapter, Epsilon Epsilon, atTexas A&M—Kingsville. While watching the ceremony, I was takenback to the day, not too long ago, when we shared the same excite-ment. One thing Dr. Lawrence Brown said at the reception still res-onates with me even to this day. He imparted to those fortunateenough to attend that there are two classes of Kappa Psi members,“Those who belong to Kappa Psi and those who are Kappa Psi.”While I am sure Dr. Brown meant nothing negative toward brotherswho cannot be as active as they would like, I took it as a challenge tobe an example brother to the others who are not so quick to getinvolved with our great organization. We all face difficulties in ouracademic and personal lives that drain our time and energy.Through Kappa Psi, I have found a new fountain of youth. I bandtogether with my newest and closest friends, and yes— brothers, giving me a new outlook on my present as well as future participa-tion in events sponsored by Kappa Psi and other organizations. Sowho are those who simply belong to Kappa Psi and who are thosewho are Kappa Psi?

My interpretation of those who belong to Kappa Psi are thosewho perhaps have misunderstood the tenants of our creed andmerely latched on to the name and its proud heritage for purposesknown only to them. As a member, I do not condemn or fault thesebrothers, but in some ways feel they are missing out on the trueKappa Psi meaning and the great gifts this Brotherhood is placingbefore them. These brothers look for a reason to avoid functions orfind fault in every activity to justify their missing opportunities topractice their brotherly responsibilities. I want to be perfectly clear;I, too, have days when the meeting or the social event conflicts witha personal endeavor or the tasks of the day draw me to mentalexhaustion and one more thing feels like a burden. But, my broth-ers and the idea of being a medical professional in this great fieldbrings me around like a dose of smelling salts. We sometimes missthe forest for the trees. It was a two-hour drive to the charteringevent in Kingsville, and the time spent in the car and at the eventwas an opportunity to share good times with brothers we had notmet and to build relationships with those we may never have hadthe chance to. Our traditions and our legacy for future Kappa Psibrothers was and will be solidified by those of us who carry KappaPsi closest to our hearts.

In closing, I am reminded of the history of our Brotherhoodwhich was founded at Russell Military Academy and something aclose brother shared with me one day during a class break. He tolda story about tradition and history and how important being a sol-dier was to him. In that story he mentioned the one point about theMarine Corps he was jealous of and that was their tremendous pridein being part of the organization. He finished by saying, “When asoldier is asked what he is or what he does, he tells the interviewerabout his job and position. When the young Marine is asked whathe is or what he does, he has only one answer, “I am a Marine.” Somy question to you, my brothers, is, “Do you belong to or areyou a brother?”

Kimberly Erickson, Epsilon Beta

Although some chapters haveundergone recruitment and socialevents, and others are still in thepreliminary stages, the brothersfrom the new class of 2012 appearto have enormous amounts ofspunk and charisma! I believe itsafe to say we will undoubtedly behearing more from them in thefuture as they gain their footing inKappa Psi.

Although seemingly far in thefuture, mark your calendars for theannual Province X meeting,February 13–16 in Seattle, home ofBeta Omicron! Following the fun-in-the-fields atmosphere Beta Pi sup-plied to the Province last February,a trip to the gorgeous metropolis ofSeattle will surely provide enoughentertainment and laughs for allKappa Psi brothers in attendance,Province X, and all other Provincesalike.

A little sooner on the agenda ofProvincial activities, we have beguninvestigating potential ideas for win-ter. In tradition with the annualDelta Mu and Beta Omicron chap-ters’ joint ski trip, there has beentalk of an all-Province ski extrava-ganza that would undoubtedly leavelasting memories of brotherhood inthe psyche of all who attend. Pleasestay tuned for more information;trust us, it’ll be worth it!
