Greetings Brothers,

It was great to see so many brothers in attendance at the 57th Grand Council Convention (GCC) in

Denver, Colorado. Special thanks to all the Past Grand Regents and Past Executive Directors for

speaking at the “Leaders and Legends of Kappa Psi” panel discussion. This was definitely a highlight

of the 57th GCC!

As your Grand Regent, I look forward to getting much accomplished during the 2015–2017 term.

First off, communication to our Provinces needs to be clear, concise, and consistent. Chris Miller,

Coordinator of Province Affairs, has been hard at work providing training sessions for all of our

Province Supervisors and Assistant Supervisors. My hope is that communication will be delivered

consistently across all Provinces. This past summer, we chartered our 106th chapter at South

College of Pharmacy in Knoxville, Tennessee. It is an exciting time as we continue to grow bigger,

better, and stronger. That said, we still have established chapters that struggle with operations.

A Chapter Enhancement Task force has been formed to identify and assist such chapters.

The Executive Committee is fully invested in seeing all of our chapters flourish and succeed.

At this time, most chapters have wrapped up their fall pledging. As new brothers are being added

to our chapters, this is an excellent time to review some important policies. I urge all chapters to

review our Risk Management, Picture, and Social Media Policies. The Risk Management Policy has

been revised to include a Risk Management Acknowledgement

Form. This form must be signed by all pledges and brothers. All

signed forms should be retained by the chapter for the entire period

the brother is on the college/school of pharmacy campus. These

documents exist to ensure the safety of our brothers and to protect

chapter charters. If you have specific questions regarding the new

form, please contact the Policy and/or Risk Management

Committee(s).

I am confident we will continue to grow and reach new heights.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the American Society of

Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Clinical Midyear Meeting this

December in New Orleans!

Fraternally,

Latha Radhakrishnan, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCOPGrand Regent

The Kappa Psi Experience: Brotherhood for LifeThe 57th GCC is now in the books and we look back on all the events of the week in this

issue of THE MASK. The highlight of the week was by far the Leaders and Legends discussionpanel. Hearing our past leaders share their experiences and remembering those who inspiredtheir journeys to the top were heartwarming and motivational for all present. I would like tothank Brothers Melissa Buchanan and Ryan Fillis for taking some of the amazing photos during the week.

With everyone riding the spirit of GCC back to campus, our chapters truly embraced thetheme of “Reaching New Heights” this fall with an incredible rush period. I encourage allbrothers to read about the record number of pledges that our chapters received in the 99 Hands section and also to incorporate some of the amazing recruitment ideas that are there into your own chapters.

In closing, let’s keep riding the wave of success from the 57th GCC, and continue takingKappa Psi to “New Heights.”

Beta Chi Brother Alexis Schrieber and Gamma Delta Brother JoelleFarano both participated in the Junior Commissioned Officer StudentTraining Extern Program (JRCOSTEP) this summer in Whiteriver,Arizona. Little did they know that throughout the experience, theywould truly gain an appreciation of brotherhood in addition to an invalu-able experience on an Apache Indian reservation. Whiteriver is locatedin the White Mountains in Arizona. In Whiteriver, there is a local hospi-tal that is staffed by pharmacists who are commissioned officers withthe United States Public Health Service.

Joelle Farano is an upcoming P5 at Ohio Northern University. Duringher time in Whiteriver, she created surveys to evaluate patient satisfac-tion in the pharmacy department as well as in the Healthy Heart pro-gram. Joelle worked with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee toorganize medications on the formulary. Joelle also analyzed the quality ofcare patients received during the hospital’s pain clinic.

Alexis Schrieber is an upcoming P2 at Drake University. While at thehospital, she worked on chart reviews that analyzed ceftriaxone usagein the hospital as well as chart reviews that focused on UTIs andpyelonephritis in pregnant women. The data she collected was used tofoster anti-microbial stewardship programs in the hospital. Alexis alsocreated order sets for doctors to use for common disease states such aspneumonia and otitis media.

Both officers got experience with in-patient, out-patient, and ER phar-macy in an environment where pharmacists receive a lot of autonomy. They participated in the anti-coagulation clinic, immunization clinic, pain clinic, and improved patient care clinic that are all led by pharma-cists. Joelle and Alexis also conducted a radio show at the local Apachestation about eating healthy when eating fast food. The show was trans-lated into Apache by one of the natives who worked as a technician atthe pharmacy. Joelle and Alexis also became very well trained in theIndian Health Services counseling model as all medications were coun-seled on including refills.

This experience wasn’t just all work. Joelle and Alexis learned aboutthe Apache cultures by attending events like Sunrise dances, talking topatients, and learning about history. The Apache tribe is known forGeronimo and his famous cave, located in Whiteriver. Sunrise dancesare the coming of age ceremony for girls and last three days. By talkingto patients, Joelle and Alexis learned about the struggle the natives facesuch as poverty, lack of education, and substance abuse.

When work wasn’t keeping the girls busy, they traveled. Joelle andAlexis went to the Petrified Forest which consists of wood that hasturned to stone over time. They went to the Grand Canyon and hiked tothe bottom. Joelle and Alexis went to Sedona and climbed CathedralRock. They crawled through Geronimo’s cave. The officers also spent aweek working in Phoenix at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center.

Throughout the program, Joelle and Alexis experienced the fellow-ship of Kappa Psi. Several pharmacists at the hospital, including CaptainMark Feltner (Beta Nu), Captain Eun Jeon (Beta Nu), Captain ReyMarbello (Beta Nu), LT Valorie Wilson, and Gina Sutedja (GammaIota), were all Kappa Psi graduates. Joelle and Alexis gained invaluableexperience at Whiteriver. To quote Joelle, “The experience was trulyeye-opening. The work that the Commissioned Corps does reallymakes a difference. All the pharmacists are eager to teach and are pas-sionate about what they do. They provide the most outstanding care Ihave witnessed in my career.” In the words of Alexis, “This experiencesurpassed every expectation that I had. Not only was it a challenge, butit opened my eyes to how pharmacy can impact every level of care.Working with the native people was humbling and showed me thateven among hardship, there is hope and determination.” n

If you have any questions about the JRCOSTEP program, please feel freeto contact Alexis Schrieber at [email protected] or Joelle Faranoat [email protected].

ByJean Starvaggi (Beta Kappa)

Appreciating the simple things in life washow Brother Cheryl Maszkiewicz lived.

She loved life, animals, and helping others.Cheryl was initiated in to the Beta Kappachapter in the fall of 1982. She enjoyed tellingeveryone that if it were not for her, Davewould have never pledged and become abrother. From the time she talked Dave intopledging, she was excited. In fact, the nightof Dave’s initiation, Dave’s dad pulled Cherylaside and gave her his initiation pin to give toDave. She was beside herself and couldn’twait to give it to him. While in school sheheld only one office, chaplain. Chaplains areoften thought of as being giving, caring andgentle souled people. They are thought ofwhen people need help and/or guidance.Cheryl personified this office. She alwayshelped where there was a need. Cheryl didn’tlike to be in the spotlight; quite the opposite, she liked being behind the scenes helpingwhomever and whenever there was a need, all without accolades or a fuss. She followedthis office into the Pittsburgh Grad andLaurel Highlands Grad chapters. Althoughshe held a few offices, she was on theInternational Graduate Development andPhilanthropy committees. Through the yearsthat Dave served on the ExecutiveCommittee, she never once complainedabout his involvement or travel. On the con-trary, she was always incredibly supportive ofhim. When the graduate referral program wasstarted, she spent hours helping with the orga-nizing and categorization of the referrals—this was all done with pen and paper, as therewere no e-mails then. She helped with theGCC held in Pittsburgh: planning the day atKennywood as well as the group photograph. When the National Philanthropy project wasthe MS Foundation, Cheryl spearheaded themaking of the Kappa Psi quilt.

She took a special liking to the SpecialOlympics when it was the NationalPhilanthropic project. In fact, she remainedvery involved for many years, continuingafter her diagnosis of muscular sclerosis. Sheonce said when asked how she kept up whenshe herself was not feeling good, that thekids in the Special Olympics were truly spe-

cial kids and they needed to feel good aboutthemselves. They were angels on Earth.

Outside the Fraternity, Cheryl’s need tohelp others continued. She worked for ThriftDrug and Medco Health Solutions until shebecame disabled in 2007. She also had adegree in nuclear pharmacy. She was a fire-fighter/EMT/paramedic in Cresson,Hollidaysburg and she was a member ofPMAP at Pitt. She loved photography, captur-ing the beautiful simple things in life most ofthe time. She took pictures for the DallasMarks Band and the PovertyNeck Hillbilliesband in Pittsburgh. She was still taking pic-tures up until four months prior to her death.

She liked to travel throughout theFraternity. She, of course, attended dozens ofProvince II assemblies, as well as traveled toProvinces I, V, VIII and X. She attended theinfamous “Nonclave” in Omaha. She attendedthe GCCs from Orlando in 1987 throughBoston in 2007. In 1998, Dave was unable toattend the Province X assembly in Missoula,Montana, so Cheryl went ‘representing’Dave, the Graduate Member-at-Large. Shehad a great time skiing with the Brotherhoodthat weekend, even though her skis carriedher off the trail and luckily she missed adozen trees on the way down. The next timeDave and Cheryl traveled to Province X, thebrothers referred to him as ‘Cheryl’s hus-band’ which made her laugh. She formedclose bonds of brotherhood with PittsburghGrad members as well as Craig Johnston andBrian Reisetter. She felt especially close tothe brothers of Province VIII.

Some of the other fun simple facts thatCheryl took pride in are: she was the firstbrother to be married to an executive boardmember and she became the first ‘FirstBrother’ when Dave was elected GrandRegent. She was also presented the Order ofthe Silver Mortar in 2007 by Dave, who wasGrand Regent.

Positivity was another of Cheryl’s greatqualities. In the quarter century I was luckyenough to know Cheryl, I never heard hersay one negative thing about anyone. Shenever was down due to any of her illnesses;she was optimistic, taking one day at a time. She didn’t complain, she didn’t ask ‘what if’ or

‘why me.’ Instead she was looking forward tothe next day, wondering what she and/orDave was going to do. She and Dave loved tospend time together, just the two of themwatching television, especially “MacGyver,”“Emergency” and of course…“Star Trek.” Abig part of her world was her animals. If youwanted to see her eyes light up, all you had todo was ask about her birds or dogs. Duringthe last few months of her illness, she was ina rehab hospital. On Friday nights, Davewould pick her up and take her for dinner.Together they would pick up the dogs, Ringoand Kaylee, and go to The Meadows for icecream or Italian ice. The last picture Davetook of Cheryl was there, with Kaylee sittingon her lap looking at each other. The picturesummarized Cheryl perfectly… enjoy thesimple things in life.

Cheryl leaves us now for the Grand Agora,to join her brothers and dear friends, CraigJohnston and Paul Hiller, as well as recentlydeparted fellow Beta Kappa Brother RogerWheat, Jr., and Past Grand Regent E. BenWelch. Cheryl may be gone, but she willalways live in the hearts and minds of all whoknew and loved her! We will remember herand all those simple things in her life thatdefined a life well lived. n

While the summer was mostly fullof internships, rotations, and planningfor the upcoming school year, IotaBrother Todd Larson, made the tripout to beautiful Denver, Colorado, toattend the 57th GCC and representthe chapter. He brought back muchknowledge to share and to prepare usfor the upcoming semester. With thestart of a new school year, we beganthe exciting process of fall rush. Thisyear, brothers provided several differ-ent events showcasing all the chapterand Fraternity has to offer. We hostedtwo lunchtime events on campus. Thefirst was a meet and greet and ques-tion and answer session in whichprospective students could gain gen-eral knowledge about the chapter. The second lunch meeting brought inseveral graduate brothers to speak onhow Kappa Psi affected them person-ally and professionally. Our most exciting event during thefall semester was held on October 19.After many weeks of hard work gath-ering donations and creating ticketsales, we had a large public feed toraise money for the Pinky SwearFoundation, which supports financialand emotional assistance for pediatriccancer patients and their families. The“Fries with the Kappa Psi’s” is expect-ed to raise more money than anyother service event we’ve held in thepast decade. Look for our successstory in the winter MASK!

Everything is in place for the Mid-America Province which we are hold-ing at Butler University this year.Everyone is so excited to meet newbrothers from different chapters andbond with others we haven’t seen in awhile. We are holding many eventsduring the weekend like round table

Icebreaker gameswere played before heading out forour social in downtown Cincinnati, right in front of the beautiful fountainsquare. General session meetings onSaturday were held at the Westinhotel and our formal dinner and socialwas held ON A BOAT. For those whohave hosted a Province, you knowhow much work goes into the week-end. Besides planning for Province, ourfocus has been on rush. We held fiverush events, including a cookout, bowling, sand volleyball, backyardbash, and a Cincinnati Reds game.Despite the terrible weather we hadfor most of our outdoor events, plentyof rushees and brothers still attendedand made the most out of the nights!

We gave bids to 44 rushees, which isour largest pledge class yet!

Even with Province and rush sea-son, we are keeping up with philan-thropy events such as the recentbreast cancer awareness 5K, Adopt-a-Highway, and our standing commit-ment to Freestore Foodbank. We continue playing dodgeball withthe Missoula Boys and Girls Clubevery month. This event providesbrothers the opportunity to relievesome stress and get a little exercisewhile we build relationships with thecommunity and get to provide somefun for the kids.

A favorite event we have continuedfrom last year is Bingo at a localsenior residence home. We do thisevent once a month. Some of theseniors do not have any family in thearea and love the interaction with col-lege-aged students. One of the resi-dents confessed that she missed hav-ing us at Bingo during the summer.

Our social events at the beginningof the semester have been aimed atthe incoming class. We had an ’80s-themed rush party with appearancesby Hulk Hogan and Maverick from“Top Gun” (both well-dressed P1s).

In addition to the rush party, weheld the Kappa Psi Olympics in earlyOctober. Events included trivia, anegg toss, a three-legged relay with“pill” counting, tug of war, and a tour-nament of taboo.

Rush concluded with a night ofGlow in the Dark Frisbee, keeping thetradition from last year’s rush. We areproud to welcome 25 pledges to ourIota Class. Every year, each class isdiverse and unique in its own way. What makes Iota Class stand out isthat seven second-year studentsdecided to join our Brotherhood.

Aside from rush and pledging, ourchapter has also been busy with sev-eral fundraisers and bake sales.Proceeds from the first bake sale ofthe year went toward Cookies forCancer, which is an organization thatis dedicated to funding pediatric can-cer research. Our chapter consistentlycontributes to this foundation.

Unlike other schools in the nation,Texas A&M University dons whitecoats during the second year. InSeptember, our second-year students, including 16 actives and 7 pledges, received their white coats.

Lastly, Epsilon Epsilon teamed upwith HEB Pharmacy for the 18thannual Best of the Best Showcase, which Corpus Christi Caller Timesholds each year. Second- and third-year students helped conduct bloodpressure and blood glucose screen-ings alongside lead technicians while

donated to our local student-run clinic, the Maliheh Free Clinic, and the restwill be used to help fund the conclavewe will host in June.

This year, we got the ball rollingwith rush very early. We worked hardto promote Kappa Psi to incoming P1sby speaking at their orientation andtabling at the professional studentorganizations event. For our first rushevent, we went up the canyon to havea barbecue and bonfire. We had agreat time meeting potential pledgesand sharing our Kappa Psi experi-ences with them.

For our second rush event, we hadan ice cream bar social. Each brotherbrought their favorite ice cream top-ping and attendees were asked toguess who brought which topping.

For our last and favorite rush event,we divided potential pledges intogroups with one active and sent themon a scavenger hunt. A number oftasks were to be completed withinthree hours. Tasks included gettingpictures of the entire team doing anact such as dancing with a fast foodemployee or putting money in a dona-tion jar. This event challenged every-one to work as a team and to be effec-tive in managing their time. We werevery impressed with the level of bond-ing this potential class already hasand look forward to our opportunitiesto further bond with them.

After a month of rush, we extendedbids to 25 students! This will be ourlargest pledge class yet. We are nowfaced with the challenge of pledgingthis many students, but our chapter isvery excited and confident in our abili-ties to do this successfully.

It is amazing to see what brother-hood is all about during the Joaquinhurricane that happened last week inColumbia. Brothers from left to rightwere reaching out to ask for the safetyof one another and to offer help.Hurricane Joaquin brought in theworst flood in 1,000 years; luckily, allthe brothers are safe and no one isextremely affected by it.
