Gamma Rho brothers with Grand Regent Eric Guptaat APhA Region 8 Midyear Regional Meeting in

Denver, Colorado.

Greetings Brothers,

First off, I would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed some time withfriends and family over the holidays, and are refreshed and recharged to tackle the new year that liesahead. At this time, many of you have finished your fall pledging and the rest are starting up theirspring pledging. I look forward to meeting all of my new brothers at the upcoming Province assem-blies! With new brothers added to our ranks, it is also an important time to go over the Constitutionand By-Laws with the chapter so all the brothers are on the same page in regard to our governance. Of equal importance, each of you should be reviewing the Kappa Psi Policy Manual with your new and existing brothers, especially the risk management policies. If you have any questions about theConstitution and By-Laws or the risk management policies, then please feel free to contact theLegislative, Policy, or Risk Management Committees. Those documents are there to assist you in chapter operations, understanding chapter obligations, and also to help you analyze your events to minimize any risk to the Fraternity, brothers, or peers. Let us all understand and abide by our gover-nance documents so we can continue to make Kappa Psi bigger, better, and stronger!

Speaking of which, by now we have added at least three new chapters to our beloved Fraternity: Zeta Beta chapter at Husson University in Bangor, Maine; Zeta Gamma chapter at the University ofFlorida–Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida; and New Mexico Graduate chapter in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Please reach out to them and support them as they go through their growing stages. All of us have learned and matured into the brothers we are today with the assistance of those whocame before us, and now it is our turn to support our new chapters as well. Additionally, there are more potential chapters in development and new requests to consider starting a chapter on campus, so Kappa Psi is still as strong and vibrant as ever. Look for announcements of the new chapters overthe Kappa Psi listserve!

Additionally, we have been busy these last two months scouting out locations for the 57th GrandCouncil Convention. I am not going to divulge anything more until the Executive Committee canreview all of the proposals and come to a decision on where to host GCC. Look for an announcementby Grand Vice Regent Latha Radhakrishnan! Lastly, we will be hosting a reception at the upcomingAPhA meeting in Orlando, Florida.Hope to see you all there!

Fraternally,

Kappa Psi is alive and prosperingThis year I celebrate five years as

Editor of The MASK. As I reflect on allthat has changed in those short five years,I’m overwhelmed by our Fraternity’sgrowth! When I took over as Editor, wewere just beginning to charter EpsilonZeta at East Tennessee State University, and now we have chartered Zeta Gammaat the University of Florida-Jacksonville.(Look for details in the Spring issue ofThe MASK.). We have added 20 chaptersover those five years, which has grownthe Fraternity to 96 strong chapters in our Order.

As we have grown, I am impressed byhow our chapters pass on our virtues ofFellowship, Industry, Sobriety, and HighIdeals to our newest chapters and new brothers. It’s these virtues that make us who weare—better brothers and pharmacists. Our virtues guide chapters as they prosper on theircampuses and help to better their communities. And, they guide Kappa Psi brothers as theyexcel and prosper in all areas of pharmacy.

As Kappa Psi continues to grow, may we in the immortal words of Mister Spock:“Live long and prosper.” Fraternally,Cameron

Brothers Unmasked

I t’s a short, simple sentiment by his wife, Peggy, that has served asPatrick Tharp’s mantra since he founded Pharmacists PreventingSuicides (PPS©) more than 10 years ago. Tharp ’61/’62, Ph.D., R.Ph.,

president and owner of Melling Group, an international pharmacy con-sulting group, was compelled to start PPS after his youngest daughter,Tricia, took her own life in her early 30s.

On October 23, Tharp spoke to a crowd of dozens of students, faculty, and staff at a lecture held in the Cartwright Student Center. He sharedthat besides primary care physicians, pharmacists are most often thehealthcare professionals to see depressed patients who may be at risk forsuicides. Since pharmacists dispense medications for depression andother mental health disorders, pharmacists are in a position to identifywhen someone has major depression or a similar disorder. However, most pharmacists in the U.S. have received no formal education or train-ing at all in suicide prevention, even though suicides are now the 10thleading cause of death in America. Knowing the warning signs or symp-toms of suicidality, often seen in patients with major depression, can helpa pharmacist save someone’s life. “We want to help save as many peopleas we can,” Tharp said.

Tharp’s youngest daughter was diagnosed with major depressionwhen she was 12 years old, and her condition only got worse as she grewolder. After graduating from high school, Tricia was dismissed from theUniversity of Mississippi during her sophomore year after repeatedly notshowing up for class. After she moved back home to St. Louis, Tharp andPeggy helped Tricia, putting her up in an apartment in the Central WestEnd. “We sustained her, but she just didn’t do well for years,” Tharp said.“She was very severely depressed.”

Tharp said Peggy would talk to Tricia at least once a week. “One weekwe called, and she didn’t call back,” he said. “She didn’t call back the sec-ond day or the third day either, so Peggy said, ‘You better go and seeher.’ I went, and when I got to her apartment building, a hearse from thecoroner’s office was there.

“I just knew it was her,” he said. Tricia had taken her own life by overdosing on six different medica-

tions prescribed for depression. Tharp said that his youngest daughterhad “stockpiled” the medications and had taken hundreds at once.

At first, the tragedy sent Tharp into a deep depression. He said helazed around the house for six or seven months. But he was alsoresearching suicides, their causes, warning signs, and, most important, how to prevent them. “I learned a lot and found out that I had really notknown much about suicide at all,” he said.

Tharp called approximately 30 of his former STLCOP students andasked them what they knew about suicide prevention. The overwhelmingresponse was “nothing.” So Tharp set out to educate pharmacists andpharmacy students about suicide prevention.

Through PPS, Tharp’s goal is to integrate suicide prevention informa-tion and education into the curriculum of every pharmacy school in thecountry. He has taught a seminar on suicide prevention at STLCOP anumber of times in the last three years. He has also presented a similarseminar at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacyand the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. Tharp says at leastsix more schools in Illinois are currently interested in scheduling a pre-sentation.

Tharp knows he still has a long way to go before suicide prevention isbeing taught at every pharmacy school in the country, but he’s taking itone school at a time. He has also used continuing education to educatepracticing pharmacists about the prevention of suicides.

In the 10 years since Tharp founded PPS, nine pharmacists havejoined the cause, including fellow STLCOP alum Robert Salter ’70, R.Ph.,MHA, president-elect of the Alumni Association’s board of directors.Salter often presents the seminars with Tharp, including the one recently

Brothers Unmasked

Dick Hammes pledged the Beta Psichapter of Kappa Psi at the University ofWisconsin in the fall of 1967 and was activat-ed in the spring of 1968. Kappa Psi has beena lifelong commitment and love affair for himever since. He was voted Outstanding Seniorin 1971, but his biggest award has been theenduring friendships with his Kappa Psibrothers from his undergraduate years andalso subsequent classes over the years. Afterreturning to Madison in the 1980s, hebecame very active with the WisconsinGraduate chapter and held the offices of sec-retary, vice regent, and regent over the next25 years. In 1996, he became GCD and facul-ty advisor of Beta Psi and held those posi-tions for a decade, until his retirement.

Kappa Psi has been a part of Dick’s daugh-ter, Lori (Hammes) Joas’s life since she wasborn. A brother and his wife lived withthe Hammes family for a year, when Lori wasan infant, while they were purchasing ahouse nearby. Lori was 9 years old when theHammes family moved to Madison. Often,Lori would help address and stamp

newsletters, and many Executive Committee

meetings of WI Grad were held at their home.Dick organized the WI Grad Brewersgame trip every year, and Lori would alwaysbe his helper, going along on the charter busfrom the house to Milwaukee for tailgat-ing and the game. She was always very com-fortable and familiar with brothers andthe Beta Psi house.

In the 1960s when Dick joined Kappa Psi,women were not allowed membership so hereally never entertained the hope of Lori join-ing. Dick’s wife/Lori’s mom, Sue, is also apharmacist and is a member of KappaEpsilon. During school, she spent more timewith the brothers than with her fellowwomen of . They did all of their studying atthe house as a group with the other KΨ broth-

ers in their class, so Sue is, in effect, an hon-orary Kappa Psi. When Lori announced herintention to apply for pharmacy school, Dickand Sue were thrilled; and when she pledged in the spring of 1992, they were over-joyed. Dick was regent of the Wisconsin Gradchapter at the time and always would partici-pate in social, pledging and initiation activitiesof the Beta Psi chapter. As a result, he wasthere during Lori’s pledging and initiation. Heremembers taking her pledge class aside andgiving them a pep talk to encourage them topersevere. He told them to look around theroom and that the people there would turn outto be their best friends for the rest of theirlives. Needless to say, they all were activated, and his prediction came true.

Don’t miss the opportunity to network with Kappa Psi brothers from across the country. Go to www.kappapsi.org to find dates for upcoming Province meetings.

Lori became an active member of Beta Psiand was awarded the WI Grad scholarship. After leading as vice regent and pledgetrainer, she was honored with theOutstanding Service Award. She lived in theBΨ house for three years during school in thevery same room Dick lived in 25 years earlier. After graduation in 1995, her first responsibili-ties were taking over the yearly organizationof the annual WI Grad Brewers game (stilldoes so to this day!) and Hacker’s Open golfouting. She then became the treasurer of WIGrad for several years, followed by an eight-year reign as secretary. In 2012, Lori becamethe GCD of Beta Psi and has devoted her timeand energy into showing new brothers, withwords and deeds, exactly how Kappa Psi canenrich their lives.

Lori’s thoughts: At GCC in St Pete’s Beachthis past summer, the speaker at the AlumniRelations presentation had us write a letter toan alumnus who had the biggest impact onour lives as a brother. My thoughts immedi-ately went to my dad, and I realized that I hadnot ever thanked him for bringing Kappa Psiinto my life. If it weren’t for him, and forKappa Psi, I would not be the person that I amtoday. I am eternally grateful.

Dick’s thoughts: “Lori has taken overmany of the same Fraternity duties I hadwhile she grew up, most recently GCD. Iabsolutely could not be more proud to callher my daughter and my brother. She hasmade it easy for me to retire gracefully andget out of her way. She has rewarded me byexcelling personally, professionally, and fra-ternally. I am indeed one very proud fatherand brother!” n

Ever been in a food coma? If you paid a visit to Kappa Psi PharmaceuticalFraternity’s Turkey Fry this past Monday, you probably have. With boxesfull of generous amounts of fried turkey, stuffing, green beans, the choicebetween mashed or sweet potatoes, a roll, and a drink, Kappa Psi’s annualTurkey Fry was responsible for stuffing a number of people. As if this was-n’t enough, the lovely ladies of Kappa Epsilon generously baked a few deli-cious desserts to end the meals with a sweet treat.

While the Turkey Fry had humble beginnings, it has steadily grown froma South Carolina School of Pharmacy only event (that sold out every year!)to a MUSC-wide event for the first time this year. With the help of DonBucciarelli, a generous sponsor from Walmart, and the expert direction ofthird-year pharmacy students Justin Sanford and Dave Cook, this TurkeyFry was the most successful one to date, raising more than $600 for theLow Country Food Bank. Graduate brothers of Kappa Psi like LayneHepler responded enthusiastically saying, “As a founder of the Turkey Fryway back in 2003, I can say I’m proud of you guys. Thanks for taking [this]further than we ever imagined!”

As a winner of the MUSC Gives Back Award four times in the past sixyears, the brothers of Kappa Psi continue to better themselves and theircommunity every year. We are thankful for all the people who helped out tomake this Turkey Fry possible, all those who came out to support us, andlast but not least, for all the little things we take for granted in our dailylives. same weekend as homecoming. Ourbrothers enjoyed attending andexchanging ideas at the fall conclave.

We wrapped up the month by host-ing Kappa Psi’s annual Halloweenparty. There was a fantastic turnoutfrom brothers, pledges, and othermembers of our school of pharmacy.

Halloween celebrations officiallyended with our service at the sixthannual Morgantown Trunk-or-Treat.The event is great, as organizationscame together and allowed nearly1,000 children to trick-or-treat in asafe, friendly environment.

As November rolled in, we spon-sored fundraisers to sell student nametags, Sheetz coupon books, and partic-ipate in the annual Magical Night ofGiving at our Morgantown Mall. Thisexclusive event has stores stayingopen late one night only with specialsales and discounts. Proceeds fromthe ticket sales benefit local charities.Special thanks to our chaplain, PaigeMiller, for organizing our fundraising!

Before Christmas break, we madecards for the residents of SundaleNursing Home to brighten up theirholiday. One of the most excitingevents was the Big/Little gift-givingleading up to our Big/Little Night. Itis always fun to see people give andreceive gifts and hints, but it is evenbetter to see the Bigs reveal them-selves at our potluck dinner.

Our first quarter back to school hasbeen very busy for us. Our focus hasbeen on recruiting. We kicked off thisyear’s rush events with bowling! Lotsof rushees came out as well as broth-ers. It was quite a bonding experiencefor everyone since school had juststarted. We had some other rushevents, which included Speed Dating,Adopt-a-Street Cleanup, a team-build-ing workshop, a Diabetes Walkthrough the American DiabetesAssociation, and ended rush with abarbecue at Gas Works Park.Everyone had a nice evening since theweather was pleasant and luckily notraining as it usually does in Seattle.

After our seven rush events, wewent right into a vigorous pledgeprocess, where the pledges really gotto learn what it means to be a brother

school faculty and brothers to sharetheir holiday plans as well as what theywere thankful for this season.

In December, Beta Xi came togeth-er for a semiformal dinner at PiazzaItalia in Durham, North Carolina.Following the dinner, brothers partici-pated in a Secret Santa gift exchange, which was a fun-filled opportunity forthem to get together to relax and enjoyeach other’s company before thesemester came to an end.

Along with the fellowship activities,Beta Xi has been involved in numerousphilanthropic events. The chapter hasbeen making holiday-themed decora-tions for the Ronald McDonald Houseas well as taking time to participate innumerous Adopt-a-Highway cleanups. The brothers have also participated inthe Samaritan’s Purse projectOperation Christmas Child this year, where we put together gift-filled shoe-boxes for needy children around theworld. We have also volunteered atUNC pharmacy school hosted eventssuch as Career Day and Family Day.

Along with several of these socialevents, the chapter recently volun-teered for Adopt-a-Highway. Tenbrothers showed up to pick up trashalong a one-mile stretch of Interstate475 close to campus. The cleanup waswell worth it for one brother whofound a $20 bill while cleaning thehighway. Along with Adopt-a-Highway, we are once again teamingup with Lambda Kappa Sigma forRelay For Life. On October 23, brothers hosted aPharmacist Appreciation Day. This

event was a meet and greet at UFHealth for hospital staff and pharma-cists in the Gainesville area. After col-lecting quotes from local pharmacistsregarding why they enjoy working intheir field, a graphic mural was creat-ed that incorporated these citationsinto the Greek letters and .Dozens of healthcare workers sharedcoffee and pastries while taking partin discussions about the events. Our brothers have continued theirhard work through the school yearwith our fundraising events and pro-jects, including a head-shavingfundraiser, T-shirt sale, participatingin Operation Christmas Child with ourschool’s CPFI chapter, and the StepOut: Walk to Stop Diabetes.

Despite all of our hard work, wehave found time for fun social eventsthis semester. Along with other phar-macy students, we all got to enjoy thefall weather at our annual bonfire andchili cook-off. In addition to the warmfire and delicious chili, we alsoenjoyed watching movies, socializing, and playing games together. Keepingwith the season, we enjoyed carvingpumpkins together, which were thendonated to a nursing home.

The brothers and school had theprivilege of having Ms. RebeccaSnead speak at our Dr. EugeneWhite’s Distinguished Lecture Series.Ms. Snead gave a wonderful andinspiring lecture on pharmacists tak-ing command, shaping our own roles, and continuing to be increasingly rele-vant in the healthcare community.

After eachbrother received a little brother, vari-ous events were prepared so we couldbecome better acquainted.

One of the very successful events inthe month of November was a LuauLunch put on by the pledges. For thislunch they invited the brothers, includ-ing many of our faculty, and it was agreat turnout. The Hawaiian food wasexcellent, but so was the entertain-ment. One of the pledges even per-formed a traditional Hawaiian dance!

Another November event was karaoke. This social was not exclusively for members, thus a lot of family andfriends also attended. Many of ourbrothers showed their “amazing” vocalskills! This social was a great way tobreak the ice between the old andincoming members because eventhose who are usually very shy partici-pated and had a good time. Also, ourpledgemasters, Jonathan Ma andTricia Asada, put together an innova-tive way for the pledges to remember values, the Greek alphabet, theofficer names, etc. They created a racewhere the pledges were put into ran-dom groups and sent out to search forclues. As the end of the year approaches,we generally think of everything thatoccurred throughout that year.Typically, we consider our successes, failures, and many blessings. I thinkback to something Federal JudgeEdenfield told my graduating class. He told us we are all turtles on a fencepost. While we may be enjoying theview from up high, it was not possiblefor us to have gotten to the top by our-selves. He told us to cherish our sup-port systems, for without them ourjourney would be a lot harder. Asbrothers, we have all been blessedwith an amazing support system. Wecan count on our fellow brothers tocelebrate our successes as well ashelp us through our failures. OurSocial Committee came up with a fam-ily dinner which embodied that idea.

We held a picnic in the park that allbrothers, their family members, andour 15 new pledges were invited to—aday to come together to enjoy eachother’s company in fellowship. Inearly November, the brothers cele-brated Founders Day at the rustic OldTown Amusement Park. We enjoyedold-time carnival rides, roller coasters, the Ferris wheel, and even thecarousel. It was a great place to cele-brate our third anniversary.

Finally, we are proud to welcome 13new brothers from the Epsilon Classto the chapter. The new brothersspent the 12 strenuous weeks learn-ing about each other, the chapter, theFraternity, and their future profession. They completed services projects, health screenings, and spent count-less hours reviewing Fraternity mat-ters, all in an effort to wear the letters. The new brothers of the EpsilonClass are sure to be a strong and posi-tive addition to the Fraternity.

Brothers of Epsilon Psi have muchto be thankful for this fall. It has beennearly a year since Epsilon Psi waschartered at the Daniel K. InouyeCollege of Pharmacy at the Universityof Hawaii at Hilo. Since its inception, the chapter has grown stronger withits hard work and dedication to FISH.Its achievements are unparalleled andcan be seen not only on the local level, but nationally as well.

As the newest chapter of thePacWest Province, brothers heldcountless events to help fund activi-ties planned for the upcoming semes-ter. The food fundraiser the chapterdecided upon was a bonding experi-ence itself. Brothers worked togetherto plan, shop, and prepare for theweeklong sales. During the week ofOctober 28 to November 1, brothersrevealed their inner chefs and dishedout many of their homemade entreesand desserts. Students, faculty andstaff of the college lined up to get ataste of their caramelized chicken, curry, pulled pork sandwiches, andpumpkin crunch—all accompanied byfreshly brewed Thai iced teas. By theend of the week, the chapter raisedmore than $400 and through this, theydiscovered the recipe for success—brotherhood, helping hands, andgood food.

Province meeting was a great opportu-nity for our chapter to exchange fel-lowship, industry, sobriety, and highideals with other chapters in thePacific West Province,” said regent LeDu. “The overall response of atten-dees was overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to increasing ournumbers even more at the nextProvince meeting.”

The chapter has much to be thank-ful for and to show their appreciation, brothers helped serve the homelesscommunity days before Thanksgiving.Hope Services, a local, non-profit orga-nization that helps serve the homelesscommunity, hosted a Thanksgivinggathering and dinner. On November22, Epsilon Psi made an appearance atthis large event, providing free bloodpressure screenings and helping outat kids’ booths.
