Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm The Elves and the Shoemaker was extracted from the book, published in a slim
volume, containin fair! tales which before the brothers Grimm put them on paper, had
existed onl! b! word of mouth and was entitled Tales for "hildren and #earth$%ainstakinl! interviewin elderl! German peasants, shepherds and others who had heard
these ancient tales from their forebears, the! made a collection that included such
popular favourites as Snow White and the Seven &warfs, #ansel and Gretel, The 'ro
%rince and (apun)el$
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, born in *+- and *+. respectivel!, studied law in collee
but became interested in earl! German epics and folktales, beinnin their research in this
field in their earl! twenties$ The two were at first interested onl! because of what the
stories revealed about primitive man/s thinkin and lanuae, and the! miht have remained
unpublished had not a friend chanced to read them$ #e immediatel! arraned for their
publication$ Their simplicit!, the swiftness of narrative, the triumph of weak 0littlepeople/, the presence of maic, enchantments, talkin animals 1 all made the stories an

pairs and his wife wanted to know who made the shoes$

elves would leave$ The shoemaker and his wife made clothes for the elves$ The! were ver!
thankful to the elves$ The elves were ver! happ!$ The! put on their new clothes and
danced$ Then, the elves went awa!$ The! never came back$

shoemaker some old coins for the shoes$ With the old, the shoemaker bouht someleather$ #e spent the da! cuttin out the leather$ #e wanted to make some shoes$ 6n the
evenin, he went home$ When he came back the next da!, he saw man! pairs of shoes$

Then people came in and bouht the shoes$ The! ave the shoemaker old$ This went
on for man! da!s$ The shoemaker became rich$ The shoemaker and his wife wanted to
know who was makin the shoes$ That niht, the! hid under the table$ 9ater, the! saw two
elves$ The elves made the shoes$ The shoemaker and his wife wanted to thank the elves$
So the! made little clothes for them$ The! left the clothes on the table$ When the elves
came to the shop that niht, the! saw the clothes$ :uickl!, the! put on the clothes$ The!
were happ!$ The! ;umped and danced about$ Then the! ran off into the niht and never
came back$
