Now let us read about this unique custom
• According to the Kadazan custom, a baby is given a name on the eighth day after it was born. The baby will be named twice, a temporary name and the actual permanent name.
• The reason why a baby is given a temporary name as soon as possible is to avoid Rogon Gaiyoh, a bad spirit from naming the baby first. If it happens, Rogon Gaiyoh will have the right to claim the baby as his.
• The official name-giving ceremony is held on the eighth day at the veranda of the house. On that day, the baby is also being brought outside for the first time.
• The whole family, neighbours and the community leaders are invited to a discussion to name the baby. This ceremony is actually a ritual called Madsapi or Modsopik. During this ritual, charms are read in order to avoid bad luck and to ask for God’s blessings. All the suggested names would be discussed and finally one is chosen.
• Choosing a name will normally be based on everything that had happened the moment the baby was born. Occasionally, the baby is named after one of the family members.
