Student short films at a glanceBharat MiSra [email protected]

Pune: In 2014, the audio-visual stream in SIMC-UG has been buzzing with in-fectious activity as stu-dents from all batches have shown immense interest in the field of filmmaking.

Not including the degree films of the outgoing batch, more than 10 short movies have been produced by the current AV enthusiasts. Leading the pack are second year students who have collaborated with each other on many movie projects. Abhash Singh and Himanshu Arya have worked together on the former’s short film, AVLO and continue to collaborate over many projects in the pipeline.

“We have many crea-tive differences over con-tent and ideation, but I find that very beneficial for the project in general,” says Singh. Ashwin Lakshmi-

narayan, director of mov-ies like Kya Karega Pandu and the upcoming Bajrang, adds, “The main benefit the institute gives us is the availability of like-minded people who are willing to invest time and energy into your vision.”

Other celebrated ‘teams’ from batch 2016 have been Anshuman Bha-dauria and Godwin Tirkey (Kritaghna and Shikaay-atein), Divay Chakshu Sharma and Sushant Chaudhary (Raat Baaki Baat Baaki and The Train Not Taken), Ashwin Lak-shminarayan and Sahil Pu-

nyani (Kya Karega Pandu and Bajrang) and Samarth Verma and Probir Sabnis (4 PM Sunset Park and The Great Interview).

Not to be left behind, budding filmmakers from Batch 2017 have already started to experiment in

the audio-visual me-dium. Jumping the bandwagon is Ritam Nandy, a first year student from Kolkata who already has many short films under his belt. Talking about the encouragement he gets at SIMC-UG, he says, “It is very heart-ening to be exposed to so many different avenues at such an

initial stage in our career. On the other hand, the tight schedule sometimes limits us from shooting for long periods continuously.”

With many short films lined up for the coming year, we wait with bated breath as the young filmmakers of SIMC-UG embark upon ex-citing future projects.

Slew of ‘Socials’ at SIMC-UGaditi kuMar [email protected]

Pune: 2014 saw a plethora of student socials take root at SIMC-UG. The bulk of organising the above has rested on the shoulders of the graduat-ing batch of 2015. Third year student Shristi Verma, along with batch mates Ra-shika Yadava and Amala Hoshagrahar, helped con-duct the immensely enjoy-able ‘Jugaad’ - a race for the street-smart and easy going. “We had so many registrations - that we had to reject some! Our spon-sors were very helpful

and we had a great time.” Jugaad was won by Isha Gupta and team of the batch of 2015.

Another event that had

people on the edges of their seats was the literary and debate contest Maadhyam. “It was my first time organ-ising an event in college”,

says Gargi Verma. “Our institute earlier lacked an outlet for the speaking arts-inclined.” Maadhyam had varied competitions, ranging from JAM to a de-bate with Prof. Siddhartha himself. It was won by the newly inducted batch of 2017.

The year also witnessed changes in the line-up of several festivals and tour-naments. These include the annual concert Vaivid-hya and the inter-batch sports tournament In True Spirit. Sarjana Singh, cul-tural coordinator and chief of the Vaividhya commit-tee has commented on the

former. 'Although the in-troduction of a competitive atmosphere had met with some criticism, we even-tually decided that doing so would accomplish the selection of cultural con-tingents for out-of-college fests.' The batch of 2015 was victors of the same.

Babu Sivakumar, sports coordinator and supervisor of In True Spirit, along with counterpart Surbhi Agarwal, was less enthu-siastic. 'We felt the bur-den of the work, and had to keep recruiting volun-teers. Perhaps planning the dates of such events well in advance may be key in

pulling it off more success-fully next time.' Hitherto, ITS was held in the month of March last year, as op-posed to this year, when it took place in September. The tournament was won by the batch of 2015.

2014 has certainly been a year for co-curricular ac-complishments and many hope to see this zest bleed into the next year as well.

Pune: 2014 was a year where a number of student initiatives garnered great recognition and suc-cess. Batch 2015 spearheaded most of them, although the contribution of the other two batches cannot be ignored. Viman Talkies, an indie film platform; The Bombay Re-view, an online liter-ary journal, and The Elucidator, a student newsletter, sit at the helm of this SIMC (UG) cultural move-ment.

Viman Talkies addresses the big-gest problem in the world of independ-ent cinema - distri-bution, by providing these independent artists the recognition they deserve. Visvaksen Ponnavalu, a third year student and the founder of the initiative said, “As a media stu-

SIMC-UG : Trailblazing initiativesdent, I have access to good screening rooms and an audience. The next step seemed obvious.”

The Bombay Review,

Founded by Aravind Jay-an and Kaartikeya Baj-pai, third year students at SIMC(UG), came forth as an attempt to take Pune’s literary culture to greater heights. Today, interna-

tional entries are being received. Bajpai credited a great deal of the maga-zine’s success to its illus-trations, by saying, “Some

of the artwork has been much ac-claimed by writers who have reviewed our magazine.”

Finally, The Elucidator has suc-ceeded in consist-ently coming up with editions. Con-ceptualized in Janu-ary 2014, today, its dedicated team con-tinues to carry it for-ward. Reuben Paul, E d i t o r - i n - C h i e f commented, “We began as a platform to apply our college learnings. I’m glad students are doing so enthusiastically.”

These initiatives high-light the need for student effort to go beyond our In-stitute and inspire a much larger audience. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors!
