Mayor’s Report We are looking forward to welcoming Dr. Rurik Hubner, his wife, Jennifer, and son, Luke, in mid-August. Dr Hubner expects to begin practicing in Hudson’s Hope the third week in August. Many thanks to Dr. Wright for organizing the doctor rotation from Fort St John over the past five years. We may still see him from time to time, as he has agreed to provide locum services when Dr Hubner is away. Tuesdays Farmers’ Markets are a hive of activity this year. Ten vendors have been making a regular appearance, providing lots of variety. It’s attracted much drive-by traffic, leading to great conversations around the lemonade table between visitors and residents. A nice place to meet and greet, as well as pick up a special gift or something for supper! Hudson’s Hope seems to be on the documentary film shooting circuit these days. In recent years, we’ve had several crews in town. Charles Wilkinson, from the Lower Mainland, who produced “Peace Out” visited again this summer. Last year, “Zoot Pictures,” from Winnipeg shot a lot of footage for the CBC, some of which was used for an instalment of “The Nature of Things”. A CTV producer whose name I’ve forgotten, filmed the Baakeskaug farm as a backdrop for a documentary on water which appeared on “First Story,” a BC based current events TV program. Damien Gillis has shot a lot of footage over the last months in preparation for a film on energy. Two weeks ago,
Damien Kuehn spent three days filming for a documentary he hopes to get into the education market. He was followed by David Lavallee and crew last week. The Fall Fair is scheduled for Saturday, August 24 at the Hudson’s Hope arena. As always, volunteers are needed for set-up, take-down, exhibit registration and so on. Please call Heather Middleton at 250-783-9252 if you have a bit of time to spare and want to get involved. Well, summer weather seems to be in short supply this year, but the rain has brought us rich emerald green grass that’s attracting many comments from visitors. The flowers are coming into their own beautifully, so – a silver lining with every cloud. Happy summertime!

The Visitor Centre is open seven days a week from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm As always, we have the BC Provincial Road Maps ($4.95), BC Approved Accommodation Guides, Alberta & Yukon Road Maps (free), and visitor guides for each of the six tourism regions in BC. These guides have maps, events listings and highlights the unique features of each region. Historical Minute: SS Grahame As there were no roads to and from the majority of the Hudson’s Bay Trading Posts, furs and Trade goods where often trans-ported by canoes, paddle wheelers or sailing ships all depending on the rivers and water ways. The first steamboat on the Peace River was the SS Grahame. The SS Grahame was built by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1882-83 at Fort Chipewyan. She was built as a
freight boat, carting traded goods up the river to Hudson’s Hope and furs down the river to the Athabaska Landing. She was 135 feet (41 m) long, and could carry 140-150 tons of cargo. The SS Grahame carried an official delegation from Canada's Federal government to negotiate Treaty 8 with the First Nations in 1899. If you are interested in supporting the museum you can by buying a membership for $20, which gives you 10% off in the museum gift shop all year long! Library
A great big thank you to all of those who were involved in pouring the cement pad for the bike rack for our library. Thank you to the Health Centre for donating the rack, Bud Ferguson for his commitment to the Library Board and making sure that this project moved forward, to Ed Forrester, Ray Gallant and Kelly Miller for their efforts with this project and a final thank you to Pro Hardware for donating the 2x6 boards for the project. We all really appreciate all the work and look forward to seeing our new bike rack installed and used once the cement has cured.
The Hudson’s Hope Public Library Board will be hosting a fundraising dance on Saturday, August 17th from 9:00 pm until 2:00 am! The dance will be a Fabulous Fifties dance! We will have prizes for best costumes as well as some silent auction items. Only $15.00 a ticket! Tickets may be purchased at Legacy Village Market, Marg’s Mini Mart or the Hudson’s Hope Public Library! You can still support the cause if you cannot attend. Just purchase a dance ticket and come on in to drop the stub off with your name and number or come in to the library to make a dona-tion and enter your name to win a prize! Girls starch up your petticoats and pin those curls in to your finest hair do! Boys shine up your best dancing shoes and whip out the pomade! It is going to be a night to remember!

The last set of swimming lessons will begin on August 12! Red Cross Kids (5-12 years) will run 5 days a week from August 12 to August 23. Red Cross Preschool (4 months – 5 years) will run 3 days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) from August 12 to August 30. Please add your name and level you would like to be registered in, at the HH Pool. You can also request whether you would prefer a morning or evening class. Depending on the interest, we will try to accommodate everyone! Space in the lessons is limited, so call or stop by today! The time and levels to be run will be announced the Thursday before lessons begin (August 8)!

The HH Pool is now offering the Canadian Swim Patrol programs. The following levels can be offered if there is enough interest:

Swim Patrol is the on-ramp to lifeguarding. Swim Patrol training provides a head start for the Bronze medal awards needed to become a certified National Lifeguard. The HH Pool is also going to offer the Bronze medal programs if there is enough interest, which includes:

The game was close with Pretty in Pink winning by only one run in the final inning. We would like to thank all the teams and players who made this year of baseball such a success! A big thank you

Brownie Registration 2013-2014 Brownies will be running again in Hudson's Hope this year! We are open to all girls born in 2005 and 2006 and are looking forward to another fun filled year of growth and adventure. I will be accepting registration forms anytime from now until September and numbering them in the order received in case we have to cap our numbers (registration will be on a first come first served basis). This year's Brownie meetings will run Thursday evenings from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. Wanda was predeceased by Husband Jim and Daughter Susan. Wanda leaves to mourn Harvey Boucher, Son Pat, Daughters Sylvia, Sandy (Al), Kelly (Chick) and numerous Grandchildren and countless friends.

program this year. Designed for beginners of all ages, the focus is on fun, participation and basic skill development. Participants earn ribbons and badges as skills are mastered.
Skaters are taught in a group lesson format by Skate Canada professional coaches and sup-
ported by trained program assistants. The CanSkate learning environment is enhanced through fun, music and colorful teaching aids and props! CanSkate is the foundational and
feeder program for other Skate Canada programs and community ice sport programs, such as hockey.
The HHFSC will also be offering the STARSkate program for skaters who have completed the CanSkate program. STARSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop
fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and in-terpretive skating. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a na-
tionally standardized testing system and may also attend competitions.
And of course, all the skaters have the chance to showcase all they have learned through-out the season at our Annual Skating Carnival that is held in March!

About the Project The proposed natural gas pipeline, up to 48 in in diameter and approximately 305 kilometres (km) in length, starts from a southern point about 35 km southwest of Fort St. John to a northern point about 200 km northwest of Fort St. John where it will tie into a new meter station. The proposed project will safely deliver natural gas to the existing NGTL System and will create opportunities for local and Aboriginal businesses and an-nual property tax revenues.

On June 28th, the Hudson’s Hope RCMP received a complaint of horses being mistreated on a local ranch. The SPCA has been contacted and will spear head the investigation. On July 5th, the RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of a break and enter at the Wildhorse Camp on Beryl Prairie Road. There have been multiple Break and Enters at this business and they are taking steps to fix the situation. On July 6th, a wallet and broken Iphone were turned over to the RCMP where they were able to locate the owner and ensure that the owner received the belongings back. On July 6th, police were called to a complaint of gun shots being heard from the Peace Canyon Dam area. Patrols were made in the area but no offenders were located. A helpful reminder for all the hunters and would be hunters in town, please read the rules and regulations for hunting before going out to try and bag your animal. On July 8th, police were called to a very suspicious male walking down the road. This male was rather rough looking and people were concerned for his well being. Police located this male at the Bennett Damn and found out that he likes to go on walk-abouts every year and does not pack a thing. This male was provided food, water and a safe ride to Chetwynd to ensure he was not a bother to anyone or scared any of the locals. On July 9th, police were called to a motor vehicle incident where a transport truck had snagged a TELUS phone line and yanked it down. TELUS arrived a day later, and hooked back the phone line that was broken. The Hydro poles were inspected for any stress damage and they were deemed to be fit for further service. The driver of the vehicle has been spoken to by police, and will most likely be held responsible for the repair bill. On July 12th, police were called to an abandoned 911 call at a residence. Police attended and the house looked to be under renovation, and no one was around the home. Police contacted the owner and found out that there is an issue with the phone lines getting wet and they defaulted to calling 911. On July 13th, police were called early in the morning to a tail gate party at Still Water Hotel. The happy partiers were found and told to shut down the party which turned them sour. The people went to bed not to happy.

On July 14th, police were called to missing boaters up Williston Lake. Based on the information obtained the situation was looking grim. Search and Rescue obtained a helicopter and proceeded to look for the boater and the RCMP went out on their Jet Boat. The missing boaters were located; they were cold and hungry after being stuck on a river and tried anything to stay warm during the night. The boaters made it back to the boat launch with a hefty repair bill on their boat. On July 15th, police were called to the Gravel Pit on Canyon Drive where two pickup trucks were seen leaving at a high rate of speed. The people in these pickup trucks had broken the lock to gain access to this gravel pit. On July 18th, police were called to a mischief to property on Beryl Prairie Road. One of the speed watch signs had the electrical guts ripped out of it. If anyone has any information re-garding this incident please call Crime Stoppers or the Hudson’s Hope RCMP. On July 18th, police were called to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 29. This motor vehicle accident ended up in Chetwynd Detachment area but given the nature of the crash the Hud-son’s Hope RCMP helped out into the wee hours of the night. There was one fatality and one injured who was air lifted to the hospital in Grande Prairie. Charges are being sought against the driver. On July 21st, police were called to a noisy party in Hudson’s Hope. The police attempted to speak to the home owner but no one was answering the door. Police would like to remind all would be partiers that your neighbors like to sleep so keep the noise down or the police will be called. The by-law for noise in Hudson’s Hope is 11 pm. On July 28th, police were called to a motor vehicle accident on the 400 road off of Canyon
Drive. There were two uninsured vehicles involved and it appeared to be some joyriding/rally
racing was happening the night before. There were empty alcohol containers in the vehicles
when located. The registered owners were located and were given fines and they also are in
the mist of repairing a damaged sign.

Water Smart® Advice for Parents
Drownings are preventable To date, BC has had at least 46 people die due to accidental drownings. Drowning is the second leading cause of preventable death for children under 10 years of age. Their natural curiosity combined with an almost magnetic attraction to water means that they have a high risk of drowning anytime they're near water - natural or man-made.
Drownings involving toddlers can be prevented if parents or caregivers are within arm's reach of their children when they are in or near water.
Stay tub-side until all the water is drained and you have removed your children from the tub. Most bathtub drownings occur because youngsters were left alone for “just a moment”.
Empty unattended wading pools and buckets of water and turn them over.
Put a lifejacket on children who can’t swim when they’re in a boat or at the beach or pool.
Be vigilant. Many children who drown do so because parents or caregivers lose sight of them for a very short period of time.
Drowning is a silent killer
Drowning victims rarely call or wave or signal for help because they can’t keep their head or arms above water. Even when they manage to get their head above water, getting a breath (not calling for help) is their priority.
Drowning can happen in seconds
Drowning can take as little as 10 seconds and occurs in just inches of water…in bathtubs, wading pools, and wells, even buckets.
Never leave a child alone near the water. Don’t be distracted by a ringing phone, a doorbell or another child.

Public Notice Hudson’s Hope Fire Rescue has been given the opportunity to utilize the BC Hydro row houses located on Dudley Drive for structural fire fighting training prior to their demolition. Many of these training sessions will involve the use of theatrical non-toxic smoke to create realistic fire conditions within the structures. While this smoke does resemble the products of combustion normally found during a structure fire, it does not pose any health or environmental risk to surrounding residents and properties. Hudson’s Hope Fire Rescue would like to thank BC Hydro for this valuable opportunity to hone our skills.

Canada Day “God Keep our land, glorious and free”
As we look around the world, we quickly realize as Canadians we are truly blessed. Many na-tions seem to be shrouded in terrifying darkness. The widespread wanton violence, blatant oppression, incomprehensible destruction, and reckless inhumanity are so seemingly and pitifully commonplace. Canada is not perfect; we have our blemishes, our scars and even open oozing sores. But we also have a history of peace... albeit a young country but one with 146 years of nonviolent progress. As a country, we must cradle, cherish and nurture a con-
tinued peaceful and humane develop-
ment for all. It is this humanity that brings glory and freedom. And in an age when trouble abounds, we should be mindful to recite the words to our na-tional anthem with more prayer, conviction and sincerity: “God keep our land, glorious and free.” Canada Day was amazing. Up to 300 folks came out to help celebrate Canada’s birthday, re-cite the national anthem, and wave their flags of freedom with pride. Thanks to Ms. Suzy Bach for leading the crowd in O’ Canada and to our local RCMP, Corporal James Fenski and Constable Andrew McElwain for proudly supporting the celebrations. Events continued with Mayor Johansson’s opening address, special award presentation and ceremonial cake cutting. Congratulations to Kelly Newsholme who received an honorary pin from the Lion’s Club for all her years of volunteer service to this wonderful organization. Vol-unteers give freely and willingly of their time. Thank you so much for all you do to make this community better.

Congratula-tions to Betty Martin and Katie Norton for winning the children’s Canadian trivia contest and to Terry Webster for scooping the adult prize. Congratulations to the winners of the many free prize draws. A big thanks to the DOHH public works for all their work: securing the tent, engineering the Canadian flag, packing picnic tables and stage; thanks to Patrick and the staff at the pool for supervision of free swim, and the staff at the office for all the behind the scenes work. BC Hydro’s Peace River dams may be required to discharge water via their spillways in 2013; this is referred to as
“spilling”. We have received calls from local residents requesting information about spill operations. BC Hydro is
offering a voluntary notification for this summer (i.e. until August 31, 2013) at times when the total discharge from
Peace Canyon Dam is greater than 70,000 cubic feet per second (1,982 cubic metres per second).
Here’s how it works:
You send BC Hydro your email address indicating that you are sending it to us for the sole purpose of receiving
updates on discharges above 70,000 cubic feet per second.
BC Hydro will not use the spill notification email list for any purpose other than the above- described
notification activity, which is carried out further to the Hydro and Power Authority Act.
You will keep your email address current – it is up to you to send us an update if you change your email.
To be removed from the email list, please email [email protected] and ask to be taken off the list.
You acknowledge by signing and returning this notice that you understand and accept the terms of this
arrangement as set out in this notice.
BC Hydro will do its best to advise you by email about discharges above 70,000 cfs at Peace Canyon Dam. BC

The Site C Clean Energy Project is currently undergoing a cooperative environmental assess-ment by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and the B.C. Environmental Assess-ment Office, which includes a Joint Review Panel process. BC Hydro filed its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in January 2013 as part of this process. BC Hydro is continuing to conduct environmental and engineering field studies on and around the Peace River between the Williston Reservoir and the Alberta border to inform detailed mitigation planning, prepare project permits, and ensure information is gathered with respect to monitoring programs proposed in the EIS. This notice provides a list of field work planned for August 2013. Helicopters may be required for some of the work listed below. Current and previous field study activities are available at bchydro.com/sitec and in the Community Consultation offices in Fort St. John and in the Pearkes Centre in Hudson’s Hope. This is a free service provided by the District of Hudson’s Hope. Transportation provided via the Lions Van. The trip will be cancelled if there are not be enough people signed up.
The Lions Van leaves from Silver Willows at 8:50 am and the Sportsman’s at 9:00 am. The driver will accommodate individual appointments, however the bus generally starts the return trip from Fort St. John by 3:30 pm. The schedule is subject to change, therefore, please call the District Office at 250-783-9901 to reserve a seat and for pick up and drop off instructions.
