Thinking about joining the New Hope Church community? We ask anyone who wants to become a member of our church to take Entrance to New Hope, a three-hour class after second service.

We set aside this unique time so people can find out more about the mission and vision of the congregation straight from

our pastors — and so they are fully aware of the value we place on membership.

Interested? Register at www.lookingforachurch.org/membership, text “membership” and your email address to 410-541-6394, or call Lynne at 301-854-1866.

Last Friday, Young Adults braved the stormy weather to enjoy a time of worship and fellowship at Restore, their monthly worship gathering.

On Tuesday, Season Cromwell, Colin Jeffers, Jennifer Perez and Jonathan Brauer represented New Hope (and JESUS!), praying with believers across the globe at the Let’s Pray LIVE television program on the Hope Channel.

Last Sunday, kids took some time to stretch after practice at our ongoing Sports on Sunday program in Beltsville.

God’s Daily WordUse the following passages for devotions to explore biblical perspectives on forgiving others.

SUNDAY Exodus 23:4, 5

MONDAY Proverbs 24:17

TUESDAY Prov. 25:21, 22

WEDNESDAY Matt. 18:21, 22

THURSDAY Romans 12:14

FRIDAY Matthew 6:12

On Oct. 2, 2006, a milk deliveryman entered a one-room Amish school and shot 10 girls, killing five. He then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide in the schoolhouse.

This event shattered the peaceful Amish community and shocked the nation. However, what was even more astounding was the response of the Amish: forgiveness and reconciliation. Members of the Amish community demonstrated their depth of forgiveness when they attended the killer’s burial service at the cemetery, hugging the widow and other members of his family.

The Amish faith is based on the teachings of Jesus to love enemies, reject revenge and leave vengeance in the hands of God. In Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcends Tragedy, author Donald Kraybill writes that the “Amish believe that forgiveness means giving up the right to revenge. Unlike those who hire lawyers at every turn to protect their rights, the Amish yield to divine providence in the case of an unspeakable tragedy such as the one at Nickel Mines, believing that God's long arm of justice removes that need for human retaliation.”

What does it mean to forgive? The word itself means “to send away” or “to put away.” Forgiveness is the putting away of the things that would keep us apart. As a result, the aim of forgiveness is reconciliation. It is when the wrong that brought estrangement between two people is put away. Forgiveness means we must be willing to put away, let go of the offenses that are committed against us; to put away anything that would stand in the way of reconciliation.

Is there a relationship in your life that is broken? What is standing in the way to rebuilding that relationship? Are you willing to “put it away” to experience true reconciliation? Think about it.
