August 2007August 2007August 2007August 2007August 200766666 NWPA HOLDS TOUR STOP #3Chris Rogers & Ford - Tournament DirectorsOn July 21st and 22nd, theNorthwest Women’s PoolAssociation held their third tour stopat Uncle Jack’s Billiards & Loungein Lynnwood, Washington. Whilethis place has always been a greatpool room, new management hastaken it to the next step and madeit one of the nicest places north ofSeattle, not just for pool, but alsofor food, drinks, sports, and overallatmosphere. Anybody with a bigscreen TV, over a fireplace, withleather chairs, showing theMariners, deserves our attention. Not to mention the great continentalbreakfast provided to all players and spectators each morning. The competition on Saturday morning was fierce, and there was nopredicting a winner, as every match seemed to be a come from behind, nail biter. This was exemplified by the fact that of the four matchesneeding a win to survive to the money rounds on Sunday, three of themwent hill - hill in come from behind fashion. On Sunday morning, on theA side, it was Kyoko Sone of Japan beating Cindy Sliva 7-3, and KimHole over Linda Carter 7-4 to get to the point. There, Kyoko playedsome of the best pool Ford and I have seen in any pro event, to win thepoint 7-3. On the B side, Julie Valdez took Mikki Small 7-4, and KimJones quickly won 7-2 over Andrea Saenz - Maes. Linda then camefrom way behind to beat Kim Jones 7-6, and Julie cruised to a 7-2

victory over Cindy. But Julie’ssteam ran out, and rallying again,Linda took another match 7-6. Thistime, Linda led Kim Hole from thebeginning and won 7-4. The finals (available for viewing atunclejacksbilliards.com ) startedclose at 2-2, until an amazing 3 railkick shot to make the nine ball byKyoko gave her the lead, andmomentum to dominate 9-3.If you haven’t seen this pool playingsensation from Japan, working herway up to ESPN on the pro tour andadding to our long list of players to

compete at the pro level, you’re missing something special. Therefore we invite you to come to The Parlor in Bellevue for our nextstop. This is a WPBA qualifier and always a big draw for players andspectators alike. We would like to thank Randy and Junko Camantigueand everyone at Uncle Jack’s for everything. Also thanks to everyonewho came to watch, we hope to see you soon. Best of all are the players,if you want to see professional attitude mixed with goofiness, this isthe place.NWPA UPDATE.........The NWPA is changing the venue for their September 8-9, 2007 Stop #5 fromBreaktime Billiard in Tigard, OR to Uncle Jack’s Billiard and Lounge in Lynnwood,WA. (reprinted from April 2006)When I was first learning to play, I was exposed to abunch of different games. Nine ball, six ball, partnersrotation, one pocket, snooker, golf on the snooker table,3-cushion and several other games were all commonlyplayed in that poolroom. I think each of those gamescontributed to my learning process. First among all ofthe games was straight pool. It was the game everyoneplayed at least some of the time and that most of thebetter players preferred. The basic rules are simple: call any ball and any pocketand shoot it in. You get one point for each ball pocketedon such a shot. When only one object ball is left on thetable, the other 14 — that’s where the other name 14.1comes from — come back up on the table. A match isplayed to a certain number of points such as 50 or 150.Players quickly learn to leave that last ball in a good

position to break the next rack. They also learn to leave a ball called the “key” ballin a position to easily get a perfect position on the break ball. In the diagram is aposition with five balls remaining. Can you see a good way to get four of themoff the table and end up with a way to break the new rack? (The rack area is shadedin). The answer is a little further down.Straight pool is an excellent way to learn skills useful in other games. When theballs are pretty well apart but still clustered in the rack area, you need precisecontrol of the cue ball to maneuver through the balls without bumping into balls andknocking them into clusters. Breaking clusters is another important skill, and youwill learn how to play position for shots that easily send the cue ball into thoseclusters, how not to send clustered balls clear to the other end of the table whereyou’ll have to chase them down, and how to play position on a ball even when you’rea little unsure of where the cue ball will go after the break-out.Have you had a chance to think aboutt the diagram? Here’s a hint you should beable to find a pattern that doesn’t require you to hit a cushion, but that pattern islittle easier if you do use a cushion or two. From a fan’s perspective, straight pool has the nice feature of allowing statistics. The main ones are high runs and average number of balls per inning. High runs —consecutive balls pocketed without a miss — correspond to roughly these levels ofplayers: Beginner: has never run a rack (14), C player has run20, B player has run 50, A player has run 100, semi-pro has run 150, pro has run200, champion has run 300. If you want to go for the record, Willie Mosconi ran 526in an exhibition in 1954. That’s over 37 complete racks. The highest run incompetition was 182 by Joe Procita. At the recent Derby City Classic, the high runin the 14.1 competition was 139 by Danny Harriman, and there were 7 other runs of100 or more.

The game is easy to handicap byrequiring the better player to go to ahigher score to win. I play in ahandicapped straight pool league witha wide variety of skill levels. Thelargest spot I’ve had to give was 140-20, which means that if my opponentmakes two balls, I have to run a rackto stay even with the spot.If you would like more info on startinga straight pool league, send me emailat the address above. For more information on how to play— strategy, safety, rules, history andinsights — there are several goodbooks on the market. WillieMosconi’s “On Pocket Billiards” from1948 is still in print. Babe Cranfield, who ran 768 in practice, wrote the“Straight Pool Bible.” Phil Capelle’s“Play Your BestStraight Pool” is a very thoroughtreatment. George Fels and RobertByrne also have large sections about14.1 in their books.OK, you’ve had enough time to solve the problem. If the only balls on the table werethe one ball and the cue ball, you would be in a great position to break. How canyou get to that position? The first thing to notice is that the 2 ball is close to whereyou would like the cue ball to end up. Leave it for last. A way to get through the ballswithout hitting a cushion is to play the nine with stun (that means no draw or followon the cue ball), scooting over for a straight shot on the 10. A little draw on the 10leaves you a slight angle on the 4 so another stun shot will move the cue balltowards the 2 ball. The goal is to leave the cue ball roughly on the line from A to the1 ball so the shot is not too hard but there will be plenty of energy in the cue ball tobreak the rack.Do you see where you can use the cushion to make your life easier? If you keepsome angle on the shot for the 10 ball, you can go to the side cushion and bounceout for the 4 ball. That’s much easier than getting perfectly straight on the 10. Also, while getting straight shape on the 2 ball will work, if you get a little above it, so thatyou are shooting from roughly along the B-2 line, you can come off the side cushionand roll to the original location of the cue ball. Another good pattern is 9, 4 withdraw,10 and bounce off the cushion and then the 2 ball. This second pattern gets a goodangle on the 2 ball more easily, but you have to be accurate on the 4-ball position.Try some straight pool. It’s a great game itself, and it will help your other games.

I have been seeing a lot of tables byBrunswick in the transition daysfrom their own manufacture and theidea of having out side contractorsdo their tables. In the 80’s, they hada flood in the Virginia plants thatdestroyed the factories in Marionand they felt that it would not be wiseto rebuild. They continued sellingtables but from the mid 70' s untilthe mid 80’s when they withdrewfrom the billiard industry, qualitywent downhill. The first table to draw my attentionwas from Eric Johnson inKennewick, Washington. Eric hada Heritage made in this period. Hehad tried to fix it himself but wasunhappy with what he got when inbought it and found that it wasimpossible to make it right. Eric hadbeen a faithful reader of “From theWork Bench” but the table was sofar out of whack that he was unableto make it work. Other “experts”had given him advice and thecombination was a disaster. The table was made to take K66rubber but the tip was set at 1 3/4”high so the balls would not bounce. His friends suggested to usecontact cement so as I pulled thecloth off, the rubber fell off one railand the rest held only in spots.

They had the cutouts for the nutplates and he had attempted to addspacers to the end of the rails butmissed on the angle so the ballswould not go into the pockets ifthere was any speed. The settingstrip and rubber measured 2 1/4"so I added the correct pocketclosers at 7 degrees and filled thenut plates. They went through thesaw at 24.5 degrees and took theextra 1/4" off. I had to play aroundwith the setting until I was happy andthen jointed off the top of the settingstrip to make the rubber feel right. Isoaked the pockets in neetsfootconditioner and replaced severalnets and packed up the entire setand headed to Kennewick. It was along trip for just one table but therewere a lot of problems with thesurface of the slate so he wantedme to take care of the entire job.The groves in the slate were so deepthat the balls would follow themthrough the Simonis bed cloth. Wefilled the surface of the slate with acombination of plaster of paris witholofactic glue and sanded it with a6 ft Straight edge with 6 ft sandpaperuntil the surface was like glass andsprayed it with Shelac to seal it.After taking out all the sag in theframe I was sure that it would be

flat but did not notice that the last 8"of slate were low going to thepocket, and as luck would have itEric found it right away. Both Eric and his wife play a lot ofpool and both showed me the besttime on our visit. I hope that theyboth are enjoying that table. The next transition table was a GoldCrown III from Arizona and it wasthe same story. K66 rubber set at 13/4 “ bare nut plate holes and 2 1/4“cushion tip to back of rail. I haveredone many GCIII but never sawone with these specs. Now ofcourse Brunswick manufacturesnothing of their own but theengineers are checking things veryclosely. Hard to slip anything pastMarvin Esienhauer.

Samm Diep(c) July 2007As a competitor, writer, and instructor, it’s such a

pleasure to have the opportunity to try many ofthe latest and greatest learning tools on themarket today. I recently held a Free Open HousePool Clinic & Party at Table Steaks East in Aurora,

Colorado. The party was an opportunity forplayers to test-drive the latest (and someoldie-but-goodies) pool gadgets on themarket today, while socializing with otherplayers. The main training aids available to try outwere:* The “BAT”, Billiard Aim Trainer

(BilliardAimTrainer.com), endorsed by Allison Fisher. This aid helps identifythe cut angels of shots.* Joe Tucker Third Eye Trainer (JoeTucker.net). This guide helps identifyand correct sighting and stroking flaws.* True Stroke Hand-held Bridge (TrueStrokeOnline.com). This is anextendible hand-held bridge.* Elephant Practice Balls (ElephantBalls.com). The official practice ball ofthe ESPN Ultimate 9-ball Challenge.* EZ Shot Ghost Ball (ez-shot-ghost-ball.com). This aid helps identify thecut angels of shots, similar to the BAT.* Ghost Ball Aim Trainer (ElephantBalls.com). Learn how and where toaim with visual reinforcements.* Jim Rempe Training Ball (PoolDawg.com). Improve your cue ball controlby actually seeing where your cue contacted the cue ball.

* Buddy Hall Cue Guide (BuddyHall.com). A tool for developing an accuratestroke.Collaborating with me on this clinic was Mike Fieldhammer,BilliardCoach.com of Minneapolis. About 30 people stopped in throughoutthe evening, including Skylark House Pro and preeminent pool instructorTom Ross (whose free Thursday night clinic is going on its 15th year) andcurrent Hunter Tour points-leader Leslie Anne Rogers from Dallas. Shewas in town visiting and gave players the opportunity to challenge her for achance at some free prizes.Table Steaks East provided snacks for everyone, four open tables, andfree drink coupons for challenge match winners. Other prizes andgiveaways included a free BAT (Billiard Aim Trainer) courtesy of the BAT,gloves, chalk, key chains, and more courtesy of PoolDawg.com, sometreats from BilliardCoach.com, and “You Might Be A D Player If...” book andother goodies from SammsPocket.com.Mike and I demonstrated the various training aids and assisted players inusing them, took challenge matches, and gave away over $150 worth ofprizes. With expressed interest for another party, we might have to haveanother one before the summer is over.As a “thank you” to the contributors that made this special clinic possible,I have included web addresses for all the above mentioned items. By Roger Long,Certified Instructor, BCA, ACSPappy’s Sports Bar, Phoenix, AZWe probably hear the wordfundamentals used more often inconjunction with sports than withmost other activities. And in anygiven sport we are told that wemust first learn the fundamentalsbefore we can learn other facetsof the game. And we often hearthings said like, “He has goneback to working on hisfundamentals.”But what, exactly, is meant by “thefundamentals”? I know that woulddepend on the chosen sport, but

can you tell me what the fundamentals in pool are? When I stopped to ponder this question for myself one day, I realized thateven I wasn’t able to properly answer it. I needed help. So I sought thecourse that I normally take in situations like this, which is to immediatelyrun to my bookcase and get a dictionary.A quick check of my dictionary informed me that the words fundamentaland basic mean the same thing. A lot of help that was! Basically speaking,I was still in the dark.So I then read the second definition for the word fundamental and was toldthat it is something that forms a foundation for other things to be built upon. That’s good, but it still didn’t answer the question; because if you was toapply that definition to the actual construction of a building, you would findyourself with truckloads of bricks, blocks, lumber and steel, but you wouldn’tknow (unless you’re an architect) which should be used in the foundationof the building and which should be used in the upper levels. So then, still searching for help, I read down to a third definition that said

fundamentals are those things thatare “most important”. Now I knew Iwas getting somewhere! All that wasleft to figure out was: what are themost important things to rememberin building a solid pool game? After considerable thought, I came upwith a long list of things that I believedto be important in learning how to playgood pool. But then I realized that thatlong list of mine constituted nothing

more than truckloads of building materials without any knowledge of wherethey should go. In other words, which ones should make up the foundation, and which ones should be reserved for the upper levels? So after even more thought and careful study, I pared my list down to onlyfour essential things that I believe every player should employ on each andevery shot. These four things (The Fundamentals) are:1. Straight Alignment2. Level Cue3. Stay Down4. Follow ThroughYou probably noticed right away (being the well-focused reader you are)that my list didn’t include things you might have expected, like stance, grip, bridge, or stroke. Well, that’s because those things can vary greatly fromgreat player to great player but they still don’t keep those players fromplaying great, so they must not be all that fundamental to great play.So I’ll now elaborate a little on each of my newly found fundamentals sothat you will be able to better understand how they made it to my final list of“most” important.Straight Alignment. No player would intentionally line up their feet, head, hands and arms in such a way as to point their cue in some direction otherthan that in which they want the cue ball to travel. So make sure you’relined up straight on every shot before shooting it.Level Cue. No matter which direction a player aims his cue stick the ballwill swerve off of the line of aim if the player hits down on it. Not all shotscan be hit with a perfectly level cue, however, but you should always hitevery shot with the cue being as level as possible.Stay Down. Straight alignment and a level cue won’t mean squat unlesseverything is held in place until the cue ball is well on its way to its destination.Even the slightest body movement (other than the stroking arm movingstraight forward) will pull the shot off line and cause you to miss.Follow Through. Stroke the tip all the way through the cue ball to ensurethat the desired action is imparted to the cue ball. Some shots may requirea short follow-through, while other shots may require a longer follow-through,but all shots require some sort of follow-through. Following through thecue ball also helps you to stay down on the shot. You can help yourself remember The Fundamentals by memorizing thefollowing little poem. With straight alignmentand a level cue,I will stay downand follow through.

Yeah, yeah, I know. It’s cornball. But it works.

Bob Zack

PORTLAND, ORBob Zack beat Justin Lilje to win theJuly 1st Sunday of the MonthTournament at Sam’s Billiards.Withonly twelve players the tournamentmoved pretty quickly. The 3 groupsof 4 seemed quite well balanced andfrom them emerged four strongplayers in the finals. Bob wasconsistent again, although he didn’tbreak any records with his high runof 43. Some problems with a coupleof the tables may have held down thehigh runs. It was good to see Justinmeet Bob in the finals instead ofgetting matched up with him in the

qualifying rounds as he has the past couple of tournaments. Bob gave afew pointers about 1-pocket strategy to some of the players while waitingfor his final match, which was well appreciated. Everyone seemed to enjoythemselves, with many saying they would be back for the next 1st Sundayof the Month Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s. Perennial high finisher John Henderson took 3rdfollowed by the usual cash finishers in this event, Eric Krause, Bart Mahoney,Robert Aldana, Frank Nordmann and Jeff Gregory. The 9 Ball event had a good field of Northern California players. But it wasa local player that won the hot seat match. Bart Mahoney went through thewinners bracket undefeated with wins over Charles B., DJ, George V, FrankJ (7th), Tony Melendez and a great Hill-Hill match against Billy Palmer (3rd).Billy Palmer took his trip on the winners bracket matches with wins overTrevor Smith, Robert Aldana, James Williams and Austin Murphy (4th) beforelosing to Mr. Mahoney.George Michaels, always a favorite to place high in these Monthly events, got wins over Dave Rodden, Chris MacDonald, Brian Silva before losinguncharacteristically to young gun Austin Murphy 6-0. On the one loss sideGeorge had to battle the short races with wins over Trevor Smith, EricKrause (7th), Tony Melendez (5th), some revenge over Austin Murphy (4th)and then a squeaker against Billy Palmer (3rd).George Michaels had to defeat Bart Mahoney two sets to win the tournamentand that is exactly what George did. Both sets were close, but Georgeseemed to have the upper edge in the late rounds of this tournament. Georgeas also won this event 3 out of the last 5 times he’s entered.

Product Review: The ChameleonBy: Don “Cheese” AkerlowRobert Tertel of RST2 International took time from his busyschedule to talk to me about The Chameleon. The rack isan ingenious design, which incorporates the racks forall games of pool into one. I asked Robert how hecame up with the idea and he said, “I was sitting atpool leagues one night as I was staring at the backof a bar box table where the racks go in and itdawned on me how it would be neat to havean 8-ball and 9-ball rack that could convertover. Those are the two games that mostpeople play. After pursuing the idea andtalking to an engineer and getting thingsdrawn out we decided to get the otherfeatures added to the rack and developed it on paper.”Robert sent me a Chameleon to try out. I was curious when it first arrivedto see how it all worked. The rack has a durable plastic construction andthe different pieces snap in or out for racking the balls. Besides the basic8-Ball triangle, there is a 9-ball rack that swings into place, or you can usea bar that goes across the bottom of the rack to push up for a 10-ball rack.Besides that you also have the means to rack for 7-ball, 6-ball and 3-ball. Itis truly an all purpose rack.I asked Robert about the time for the development process, since it isrelatively new to the market it is always interesting to know how much timewent into the developing stages for a product. He responded, “When itwas all said and done it took a little over a year because we made prototypes. It went from one concept to another and we were fine-tuning it and alwaysimproving upon it. We got input from other people to help with the fine-tuning before we went into production. We made this rack so there is onerack for all games and you don’t have to go out and buy multiple racks. One of the things that Allen Hopkins likes about it is that it prevents youropponent from manipulating the rack.”What I liked about it is that I can see where I am placing the balls in the

rack. There is no guesswork about where theballs are in the rack. This makes racking easyand quick. If you’re in a match with time restraints, you are not wasting shooting time on racking.Robert chose the name Chameleon because,“As a chameleon changes its colors and adaptsto the environment so does this rack since it canbe used to play multiple games.”The solid construction of the rack in lightweightplastic makes it nearly indestructible. It is easyto use and stores either on a hook or in almostany slotted pool table. It is designed with the poolplayer in mind and can be used as easily in a

pool hall or at home. You only have to use the Chameleon to see the qualityof the product and how versatile and easy to use it is. “It is a traditional rackwith so many bonus features!”The Chameleon is manufactured by RST2 International, which alsoproduces two quality tip tappers in nickel and dime sizes called “TurtleTapper”. If you can’t find “The Chameleon” or “Turtle Tapper” in your localbilliard supply store, it can be purchased online atwww.RST2international.com. And if you are asupplier looking to carry The Chameleon inyour store you can register to become a dealeronline as well. The retail price of TheChameleon is $69 and $19.99 for the TurtleTapper. RST2 International stands behind thequality of their product. And as Robert stated,“We at RST2 International are sure that youwill enjoy your Chameleon rack for years tocome and we are proud to continue servingthe global billiard community.”

from: Christina PionaDave was born in Martinez,CA in 1942. He grew up inWalnut Creek, CA. Hebegan playing pool at a veryyoung age, probably in hisearly teens at the localbowling alley and

recreation center. Dave went out on the road in his 20’s and never lookedback. He played in every conceivable nook and cranny corner of the country. He loved the game of pool and won many local and regional tournamentsin his career. He also did his share of winning in the high stakes moneygames that he played in over the years.Dave really loved all his comrades in the billiard community. He enjoyedswapping stories with them. He enjoyed the cameraderie and thecompetition. He married Christina on 12-9-91 at the Sands Regency Tournament inReno, NV. He and Christina became Star’s foster parents in 1998, adoptingher for their own in 2000. He was honored when people thought of him asan ambassador of pool. He felt called to share his knowledge of the gamewith others, often offering advice and instruction without charging anything. He loved sharing his Faith with all that he came in contact with. He touchedmany lives in his short 65 years on this earth. He will be missed.from: Linda Carter and Mike ZimmermanWe are just devastated. Mike’s first response was, “My dad died”. Mikelooked up to Dave as his mentor and father figure, even though Dave wasonly 7 years older. Dave saw potential in Mike and took him under hiswing, even though Mike learned some of his pool lessons the hard way.Dave was the reason Mike got started playing pool. That bowling alley iswhere he met Dave and Dave was the best player in the house. He watchedDave beat Jerry Brock out of $2000. While Mike was betting a quarter onthe pinball machines, they were laying out $100 dollar bills on the rail in thepoolroom. Mike was 13 in 1963 and was about to go into his freshmanyear of high school, but the flash of all that cash got Mike to thinking therewas an easier way to make money than going to school. After that, Mike played Dave every day with different spots, like the 3,4, 6,and 7 playing 50 cents on the 5 and 9. He lost every day. Mike lost hisallowance and everything he could scrape up from other players to Daveevery day for 6 months until he got good enough so he could win moneyfrom other people to support his Piona habit. After about 9 months ofplaying with him, he was the 2nd best in the bowling alley out of around 20players. Then they would go next door to the bowling alley and Dave wouldtake money off the bowlers too, (including Mike) spotting 100 pins a game.Dave was about a 190 bowler.Back in those days, you could play pool for $1 from 9-12, so it always had20 people playing 9 ball, bottle pool, partners, etc. So why go to school?(Disclaimer to young folks - Stay in school!!!)From 16-20 Mike went on the road with Cole Dixon. Then he went to work, got married (short-lived) and decided to go back to playing pool. Went toOR for 6 months to get in stroke in 1976, then came to Seattle and met upwith Dave again, who was living in Seattle, and then they went on the roadtogether, headed to Detroit to play Rosie. After about 2.5 years of travelingto every city except Detroit, Mike decided to go home and get a real job for7 years. Mike had a great time traveling around with Dave and remembersthat time fondly.
