Pool Tournament Madness

Bottom Line:Why do we do this?

Because we promote pool Because we care !

11/4/2001

I really want to be heard on this. I am appalled at the B tournamentsituation. Who in their right mind isnt. It is a tragedy that tournamentsadvertise in the Pool newspapers as B tournaments yet do not allowB players into the event because they are to good, by the standardsof the field of that particular tourney or because they are not one ofthe regulars who frequent a location. One weekly tournament isperfectly fine to play and another if someone doesnt like you, youcant play.I have been saying for years and was publish twice before on thissubject, there should be objective measures for grading and ratingpoolplayers. I previously didnt just whine about it I but gavesuggestions as to what the criteria should be used. No one hasdone anything about this dilemma and it been 7 years. The BCAhas implemented some measures but these are very limited to onlymembers of the BCA. Any system will not be perfect. The story Iheard the other day about a player who is a good B players showedup a second time to a weekly tournament where just as strong ofplayers are allowed to play and because a regular saw a threat tohim winning the tournament he complained. The B player was toldhe could not play. That haunts pool and especially someone whobothers to show up to try again when the last time they played theywere out in two. No credibility should be giving to these tournamentand directors who play this type of game on people who should beallowed to play. The converse is true. Even A players entered arecent regional B tournament knowing their skills were of A qualityboth regulars and known A players got to play or snuck in. It shouldbe called an invitational Not a B Tournament. So whats next?My Suggestion: A regional standard which will be observed by alltournaments monthly or weekly. If they dont follow a guideline theselocations should not be listed by any pool publication what so ever. One complaint to a publication and no listings until it is corrected.

Part One

This story is dedicated to my friend Art Schuff, and was begun in 1991, before he died in 1995.

Happy holidays, Art! What are you doing inhere on such a great day? For a December afternoon in 2020, it wasnotably mild and sunny. In recent years, therewas usually a ton of snow by now with a heftychill factor. Pat had stopped by to visit with Art,who was in his kitchen juicing up apples andslicing Hawaiian sweet bread.Oh, hi there, Pat! I was down in the basementlooking for Christmas decorations, but I gotsidetracked going through someother stuff, Art explained. Hehanded Pat a plate of warm breadand a glass of juice, and, collectinghis own, headed back downstairs, moving slowly on his old legs.Did you happen to see the liveshuttle landing on Mars thismorning? Pat asked, munchingbread and following Art back downthe narrow stairs and straight intoyesteryear. He stumbled overboxes and piles of stuff and about dumped hisglass of juice on an ancient 50s black and whitetube television before he found his way over toan old gray couch that stood next to the washingmachine.Didnt see it; Ive been down here all morning, said Art as he went back to sorting a pile offishing and sporting gear.Oh, wow! Is that what I think it is, Art? Patasked, watching as Art pulled out a long narrowbox and blew the dust off it.Art perched on the edge of an old table and ranhis hand lovingly over the surface of the hardcase. He lifted the two clasps and opened itcarefully.Yep, its my old Schrader. Had it custom madeabout forty years ago.Pat flooded with memories as he looked at thebeautiful pool cue, resting for all these years inthe little black box. I sure loved to play back then used to playfor eight to ten hours a day when I was reallyinto it. Art took a sip of apple juice and laughed.Played all the weekly and monthly tournamentsand gambled when I could. Remember the timeI won $4,000 in an All Star tournament? I beatthe favorite player in the finals!I remember, said Pat as he cleared off a spotoff the couch and plunked himself down. Youplayed well and you deserved it. Boy, the actionwas great in those days I miss making thatextra money. Can you believe how long its been

since we played? He scratched his head. Whydid we stop, anyway?Arthur pushed a stack of old tools towards Pat,saying, While youre here, make yourself usefuland sort these out. Well, for me it was a lot ofthings. The coin-op tables doubled to fifty cents, and then went up to seventy-five, remember? Before that, we used to play volume pool asmuch as eighty games a night. I loved gettinginto that rhythm and getting on a roll. I rememberonce I played thirty games of 9-ball in one hour.Pat remembered that night, and others whenArt held the table all night long and ran thewannabes completely out of the place.Art continued, But even at fifty cents a game, playing that much 9-ball ended up costing $15

an hour!It was true, and even though thepool halls were cheaper, from $4to $5 an hour, and the equipmentwas much better, most of thegambling players were just notcoming anymore. It got to where I just couldnt affordto play. I budgeted a hundred anda quarter a month on the cointables, but when the cost of playingwent up, my salary somehow

didnt! Art shook his head. I know costs goup, but double?Pat had to agree. The amount the taverns werecharging back then was outrageous, he thought.A lot of places were talking about raising pricesto a dollar a game before I quit, he spoke aloud. They said it was too expensive to maintain thetables! What a joke!Businesses catered to people who didnt evenknow how to hold a cue, who considered rippingfelt, breaking cues, burning rails and cloth withcigarettes just part of the game and, Patrecalled, the establishments considered it justpart of the expense and made little or no effortto require respect for their equipment or maintainthe equipment they did have slip on tips, badrails, cheap ripped cloth, poor lighting, tablesfull of fuzz and ashes, no room to stroke a cue.Hed seen the focus go from pool to video pokerand not much else. He sipped his mug of juiceand thought back. The better players, like in any sport, wantedgood conditions and always took great painswith the tables because they cared. The ironywas that those players basically just got ignoredor were made out to be whiners when theyasked for improvements or pointed out someonewho was disrespecting equipment. There wasone place that was all right, he conceded.Remember Pub 181? They stayed at a quarterfor a long time, and recovered the tables with

Holidays. Family and friends. So many degrees offriendship. There are social friends; there are workfriends; there are cool friends and pool friends(sometimes the same); there are old friends, goodfriends and, hopefully, good old friends. Someonewe know casually may gift us with the surprise ofunderstanding when we most need it. Someone we trust may deny usnurturing when we are most vulnerable. Sometimes a glance at someonenew to our life reveals a gossamer binding of spirits that will endurea lifetime, genderless and strong. Sometimes enduring relationshipsare constructs of persistence and history. On its face, friendship seems to glow with its own clarity. Either it ispresent or it is not.It is said we are lucky if, at the ends of our lives, we can count 5 truefriends. So, to define friendship lets see A friend is someonewho is nice to us. That is about 90% of those we come into contactwith. Hmm. A friend is someone we care about. That is probably atleast half of those we see regularly. A friend is someone we trust.Ah! Perhaps this will clear things up. Lets see. We trust one withour car and our finances, but not with our confidences. We trustanother with our heartsecrets but not with taking care of our kids orour money. We trust yet another with our lives but not withunderstanding our vulnerabilities. So, that criteria also has manyfacets. Or, a friend is someone who is there for us. A surprisepackage, that. Unconditional quickly becomes corralled within tightparameters, whether our own or theirs, intentional or not. Regardlessof parameters, friendship is the prism for celebrating each personsvibrant colors. The one certainty is that we each will be whoever we are. So, asForrest Gumps mother might have said friendship is like a box ofchocolates. I wish you each a lovely replenishing box of chocolatesfor the holidays, enough to last and sweeten your lives always. MerryChristmas.Mary Price, chocolate lover - Helena, MT

Definitely, we are in the computerage! Computers enable mankindto solve problems and tapinformation much more efficientlythan any other time in the historyof man.Provided your technical foundationis sound, programming could bethe answer to why you arentachieving a higher level as quicklyas you would like. Much in thesame way our mind works, thecomputer receives information andcalculates answers quicker andmore accurately depending on theinformation programmed into it.For example, if you programmed acomputer to add and subtract only,a correct answer to multiplicationwould be impossible. Our mind works along theseprinciples too! Believe it or not, thehuman mind is the easiest of allspecies to program. Therefore, you need to examine yourself, where you are, where youre goingand whether or not you haveprogrammed yourself to get there. It could be your failures are a resultof negative programming. Howmany times have you finished atournament, placing right whereyou thought you should be? Whatmight the result be had you

programmed yourself with higherexpectations? If these questionsfit your profile you need to set somehigher standards and goals foryourself. Bear in mind, thesehigher standards and goals requirea higher standard of discipline andpractice in order to reach the nextgoal level. The subconscious mind is verypowerful. Programmed properly, your subconscious can help youcreate amazing results. How manytimes have you played positionwhere a ball could possibly hookyou? If you hit the ball hard enoughor soft enough you would get adecent shot. Hit the ball with an inbetween speed and youre hooked! You say to yourself I dont want toend up here! Ever notice howmany times you end up hookedright behind the ball, where youdidnt want to be? Thesubconscious only registers wantsand desires. It doesnt register thedifference between do want anddont want. If you take the door dont out of the thought, whatdo you have? I want to end uphere is what you have and whatyou get!You also need to surround yourself

with a good support team. Theidea is to be exposed only topositive support. The support teamshould consist of close friends, family members and others whoare of a positive influence. One oftheir duties is to run interference, heading off anyone or anything ofany negative nature. The playerneeds this help so he can focustowards the positive side of whathe is doing. The support teamtakes care of all minute details forthe player. The team itself is a formof positive programming, giving theplayer a feeling of security and selfworth. As you build your supportteam dont forget to properlyprogram yourself. Raise yourstandard of goals and beginspeaking positive about yourself! These positive words need to bespoken often and with authority.Positive words create positiveresults, just as negative words givenegative results, Relax. Speakgood words. Given time, your egowill draw you to where you want tobe.Programming is very important.Correct programming is essentialtowards becoming a champion.Champions are not born. They aremade!

On Nov. 3rd & 4th Shotzes ofEverett held its 6th annual FallClassic 9-ball tournament. For allconcerned and especially the 52players who came from as far awayas Calif., fun was had by all . Thetournament was opened to a largerfield because of the 8 footers andit was amazing what a differencethe extra tables made. The waitbetween matches was shorter, which showed us that our

tournaments can be even betterthan in the past! With the 52players entry, the $ 1,000 addedby Shotzes and the $10 late feecollected. There was a total of$4,240 paid out to the top 16players. If there had been a full fieldof 64 players, we could havepossibly paid out more places andstill have paid a $1,000 or more forfirst. Unfortunately only 3 of the

being just moneymatches would havebeen tough! But I thinkwe are willing to tryone.Tournament startedout like any other, players meeting andthen the draw. Onceall the names were puton the board, it wasimmediatelydeterminedthat this

was no ordinarytournament! Names onthe board just jumpedout.John Horsfall (Canada)a past champion provedonce again that he canplay on any table put infront of him. Saturdaymatches were TylerHayne (7-0), Dan Louie(7-5), and Scott Reed (7-1).Sunday found John starting withTodd Marsh (7-6), StanTourangeau (7-2), and the pointmatch with John Doherty (7-4).John Doherty (JD) of Everett formany years a road player, now afamily man showed that he can stillplay with the big boys! I dont thinkthis will be the last time his namewill appear in the finals of anytournament. JDs Saturdaymatches were John Ahlstrom (7-4),Mike Vidas (7-5), and Jeff Leonard(7-6). Sunday he won over TomLyons (7-1), Tom Tweedell (7-3),and then the loss to John Horsfall(7-4). JD ended up playing TimTweedell again for the chance atJohn Horsfall. He played hard andfast and won the match (7-2).Many players and spectatorsstayed around to watch the finalmatch. It was a great match towatch! One by one each game fell

to one or another player. JohnHorsfall took a commanding lead, but JD wasnt going to give upeasily. He came back to make it aone game lead only by beatingJohn 6 to 5 . This final was one raceto 9 and it looked as though it wouldbe another close one. But Johnwasnt about to let this one getaway. He took command and wonthe final match 9-6.

Congratulations toJohn Horsfall.Once again we haveto thank DarryleCloer for a greatplace to hold thet o u r n a m e n t s ,Andalusia for the$1,000 added! Alsoto Dave Shelby(manager) formaintaining a greatbar, kitchen and overall care for all the

Ward WinsAt McQs

by: Clay Skidmore, Tournament Director

Well for the first time I am in a different position. As most of you know, McQs Billiards held ourfirst 8-Ball open tournament in about 5 years. Iplanned to play this event on our Olhausenoversized 8 footers. I kept the field limited to 48players as a time factor because I only havefive 8 footers to play on. But low and behold Imade a big mistake and I hope my out of townplayers can forgive me. I didnt specify in my adthat this tournament would be played on the 8footers. I just assumed that players would know, and I apologize for that. My reasons for directingthis event on the 8 footers are all about the greatgame of 8-Ball. To me a big part of 8-Ball is theclusters and the strategies. If 8-Ball is playedon a 9 footer a lot of that is lost. Of course, abigger table means more table space. And moretable space means fewer clusters and lessstrategy. It is too easy to run racks on a 9-foottable in 8-Ball. therefore my reasons for playingon the 8-footers. I have probably directed over1000 tournaments and each time I learnsomething new. So from now on, I will be sureto include equipement type on all my ads in thefuture. So again I apologize to those that cameover and left disappointed, because I do workhard to put together quality events and I willcontinue to do so.The event attracted 38 players, and other thanthe complaints about the tables, things wentwell. With my love of 8-Ball, it was nice to seesome great 8-Ball players here. StanTourangeau stopped by on his way to Minnesotato play in the B.C.A. 9-Ball Tournament. Heworked his way into the finals by defeating ToddMarsh 7-2 in the opening round. He than wenton to beat Lee Lang 7-3, Kenny Trambitas 7-6,Randy Camantigue 7-3, and Wayne Boyd 7-3to earn a spot in the winners final. His opponentin the finals ended up being Jim Ward. Jimopened up with an opening round win againstBruce Hatch 7-6, he then went on to beat FredCastellano 7-6, Stacy Mallot 7-1, and T.J. Frank7-3, to meet up with Stan. Jim edged out Stanin the winners final 7-6 and then sent Stan tothe B-side. There Stan beat Wayne Boyd 5-2to get another shot at Jim. Stan did the job onthe first set and won 7-3. But in the second set,Jim broke out to a 6-0 lead. Stan showed somegreat heart, and with a little luck and some greatouts, Stan worked it back to 6-5. On the 12thgame, Stan broke didnt make a ball and Jimran the rack out to win 7-5. Good play you guys.Once again sorry about the tables, and I hopeto see everyone in April for the open 9-Balltournament.1st Jim Ward $900+$170 side pot

Efren Reyes long knownby his nickname TheMagician, has won theinaugural Tokyo 9-Balltournament and hasclaimed the largest pursein the history of the game.$180,000 for first placehere once again cementshis legend as the GrandMaster of the game.Besting Niels Feijen 15-7in the final match beforea packed house and the

glare of television cameras, the easy-going Filipino table king cruisedthrough the match by controlling his break shot and running out at everyopportunity. The alternating break format usually keeps things close, butEfren broke and ran five of his breaks in a row and out-safetied Niels tocompletely control the scene and he was never in trouble throughout thematch.

Said Efren afterward: Iusually do not break thatgood, but here the breakwas really working for meand not for him and thatmade all the difference.Niels agreed. I could notget going, he told us. Iwas making a lot of ballson the break but then hadno shot. I kept having toplay safe and he keptgetting out of them. Thismatch concluded a day of

high drama. Eight players began the day with a shot at the finals. Reyesfirst took fellow countryman Antonio Lining out of the running 13-11 andthen faced yet another Filipino in the form of Warren Kiamco who hadjust knocked out German Michael Schmidt 13-10. When Kiamco wentdown 13-5 Efren had gained his seat in the finals. Feijen began themorning by besting Australian Johl Younger 13-11, then demolished lastyears World Champion Fong-Pang Chou 13-8. Chou had disposed ofWorld Games Gold Medalist Ching Shun Yang and that paved the wayfor our final match-up. STREETBILLIARDS

I remembered everything aboutQStreet Billiards: the great layoutof the room, the restaurant, theroomy bar, and most of all thefriendly faces. Owners Dennisand Sharon Blackwell, along withpartners Jeff and Kim Mishlerworked tirelessly to providetournament players andspectators with impeccableservice. Ross Gay would onceagain take the helm and beresponsible for making the

tournament run smooth. Sarah handled service in the restaurant quiteefficiently, and the bartenders kept everyone warm and happy with winterdrink specials.Friday night started off with theauctioning of 112 players. The roaddogs couldnt hide, but a few peopledefinitely went cheaper than theyshould have. Kris Robbins did anexcellent job of taking money andkeeping track of the people thatbought the players. All in all, theplayer s auction would proveinteresting. With so many awesomecompetitors to bid on, it was definitelyimpossible to accurately guess whowould win. Danny Medina ended upbeing the favorite pick, with John Schmidt and a pack of young gunsfrom Sacramento right behind. As the tournament unfolded, players fatewould of course be determined by luck of the draw, as well as their abilityto adapt to equipment they were not used to playing on. Some handledthe variables much better than others. As play progressed through Saturday, upsets were reported here andthere. John Schmidt admittedly played horrible to lose a hill-hill matchagainst a young local player who speared in a difficult one-nine combo totake the match and send John packing for what would have to be a 10match streak to come back through the B side. John was unable toovercome such a difficult feat.Johns young road partner Nick Spano did not seem to experience thesame difficulties. He smoked through the winners bracket like a hot knifeslicing butter. He did it quietly, but considering the quality of competitors,it couldnt have been an easy road, and if it was, players at Q-Streetcould have witnessed the next Little Alex or Cory. In the other half of thewinners bracket making his way to the top was Danny Medina all theway over from Colorado. Former professional player, Medina showedthe crowd that he has not lost his touch, quite the opposite in fact! Whenhe faced off against Spano for the hot seat he looked like a bulldog witha chew toy and handily sent Spano over to the B side to face whoeverwould come through. For the most part, the Sacramento rat pack fizzled out of the tournament, apparently too spoiled from the equipment at their homeroom. Few pocket billiard players are familiar with the diamond system. Manyuninformed players think the diamond system is some sort of mysticalpool panacea. Actually, the system was devised for the game of three-

cushion billiards (no pockets) where points are scored only after threecushions and two balls are struck. Therefore, the system has somewhatlimited application to pocket billiards. The analysis presented here willallow you to determine if it can be applied to your game. In any case, youwill be able to decide if it is your pool panacea. The diamond system requires that the initial ball speed be medium orslightly faster. As with any banking system, speed is nearly as critical asaim. The system also requires that the cue ball be struck with a littlerunning english. In this analysis, shooting at or through a diamond meansaiming at its actual location in the rail, not at the cushion or rail trackadjacent to the diamond. The diamond system actually consists of two subsystems; the 5-SYSTEMin which the side rail is struck first, and the PLUS SYSTEM in which the

end rail is struck first. Each of these subsystems will be examinedindividually.

5-SystemThe rails are numbered in the order in which they are struck(first, second, and third). The second rail is generally ignored in thediamond system. Emphasis is on the first and third rail because they arethe critical rails in three-cushion billiards. The diamonds on the first and third rail are numbered as shown in figure10-1. These numbers are called rail diamond numbers and are used todetermine where to aim on the first rail, and where the ball will strike thethird rail. Figure 10-2 shows a second set of numbers that are called cue-

ball position numbers. The diamond nearest the second rail is assignedcue ball position number 1.5. The value of each succeeding diamond isincreased by 0.5, so that the diamond in the comer has the value of 5.The numbers continue around the end rail where the value of eachdiamond is increased by 1.To determine where the cue ball will strike the third rail, subtract the firstrail number from the cue-ball position number. For example, in figure 10-2 cue ball A is in position 5. If the cue ball is shot at diamond number 3on the first rail it will strike diamond number 2 on the third rail (5 - 3 = 2).Cue ball B is at position 4. Assume you want to strike the third rail at

diamond number 3. By subtracting 3 from 4 it is determined that theaiming point is diamond position 1 on the first rail. Do not be confused bythe cue-ball position numbers shown in figure 10-2. Once the cue-ball

position number is determined, further analysis is made in terms of raildiamond numbers. The three-cushion player must know where the cueball will go after it strikes the third rail. Its path, off the third rail, is called a

track. The tracks are numbered in relation to the diamond numbers of thethird rail. Figure 10-3 shows the third rail tracks 1 through 3. These tracksare slightly different for each cue ball position and must all be committedto memory if the system is to be of maximum usefulness. How to use the system: Consider the situation shown in figure 10-4. Theobject ball (8-ball) is near the comer pocket; intervening balls force athree-cushion shot. We know that track 2 starts near the second diamondon the third rail and goes into the comer where the object ball is. Therefore, the cue-ball position number minus the first rail number must equal 2.The aiming point on the first rail must be determined by regression. If theaim is at rail diamond number 3, the cue-ball position number is 4.4. Thisaim will be incorrect because 4.4 minus 3 equals 1.4. If the aim is at raildiamond number 2, the cue ball number will be 4.6 which would yield 2.6,which is too high. Sighting at diamond number 2.5 results in a cue-ballnumber of 4.5 (4.5 - 2.5 = 2) which is perfect. If the cue ball is shotthrough rail diamond number 2.5 on the first rail it will take track 2 into theobject ball.Plus systemThe plus system is also referred to as the 2-plus system orthe plus 2 system. This system is used when the end rail must be struckfirst.

Figure 10-5 shows how the diamonds are numbered in this system. Thecomer diamond (over the pocket) has the value of 1, and the value ofeach succeeding diamond is increased by 2. With this system the cueball is shot through one of the diamonds on the end rail. It strikes the thirdrail an equal number of diamonds away from its origin. In figure 10-5 thecue ball is at position A; if it is shot at diamond position number 2 on thefirst rail, it will be aligned with position number 4 on the originating rail. Todetermine where the ball will strike the third rail, add 2 to 4 and the answeris diamond position number 6. If the cue ball is at position B, which is

diamond position 2 when shot at diamond position 5 on the first rail, it willstrike the third rail at 2 plus 5 or diamond number 7.It is difficult to maintain a proficiency with the diamond system withoutconstant practice. The practice requirements are probably warranted forthe three cushion player but are questionable for the ordinary pool player. Now that you know all about the diamond system, you can judge its valuefor yourself.

Note: The following excerpt is asample reading from Building thePerfect Game by BlackjackDavid Sapolis. This text is takenfrom Chapter 5, Back to theFundamentals. Enjoy! Before we can have the perfectstroke, we first need to know howto get into the proper stance. Whatis the proper stance? Its differentfor everybody, but there are somecommon stance flaws that lead toproblems, but a sure way to get youdown on the shot while at the sametime being fundamentally sound inyour stance.10 Common Stance Flaws 1) Too close to the table 2) Too far away from the table 3) Crouching too low 4) Crouching too high 5) Crouching 6) Feet too wide apart 7) Feet too close together 8) Shoulders not square 9) Stiff or rigid bridge arm 10) Instability10 Factors of Stance Mechanics 1) The head 2) The ears 3) The neck 4) The shoulders 5) The bridge arm 6) The spine 7) The center of mass *** 8) The hips 9) The legs 10) The feetThese factors tend to add to eachother. Crouching is the end resultof standing too close to the table. Some players bunch themselvesup into a ball mistaking musculartension for stillness. The only thingthat should move is your shootingarm, but tensing up the rest of yourbody to keep it still just worsensthings. Others tend to extend theirbodies as if they were danglingfrom a tree branch. Both extremesare extremely disadvantageous toour balance, or our weightdistribution. Our feet being tooclose, or too wide apart is a directresult of uneven balance, oruneven WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION.Shoulders not being square is alsoa direct result of uneven balance,

as we then shift our weight fromour legs to our bridge arm, causingour shoulders to become tense. The shoulders should be parallel.Overall, these flaws causeinstability in our stance. A solidstance means that your weight isapportioned evenly throughoutyour body. When in your stance, Ishould not be able to knock you offbalance. To understand how weare to achieve this, lets look at ourStance Factors. We start at the topof our head and work our waydown. Our body, to be balanced, has tofollow a a line of balance. The lineWILL NOT be straight, (as manyother instruction manuals have toldus). You will be bent at the waist, causing a curve, and your head willbe tilted slightly upward (unless youlook at your shoes while you areshooting) so that blows the straightline theory out of the water. Theline I will discuss is the Line ofBalance. The Line of Balance starts at thetop of your head and leads to thetips of your toes. From top tobottom we will examine this linethat exists for everybody, and if youdont know where it is, dont worry, well find it!Our head sits atop our shoulders, supported by our neck, andbalanced by the equilibrium whichis centered in our ears. To properlybalance ourselves in our stance, itis suggested that you place yourears above your shoulders at alltimes. The head and the neck willthen have no choice but to follow. Our bridge arm is supported by theposition of our shoulders. Ourshoulders should be in line with ourears, and just because the bridgearm is extended, this SHOULDNOT change. Extending from theneck and down through our reartorso is our spine. The best way Iknow to perfectly align the spine isto put your nose, chin and sternumin a straight line. Then, line yourears above your shoulders and wehave the posture that our mothersalways dreamed of. This leads usdown further to our Center of Mass.Next Issue: Center of Mass

good quality felt. For the amount of play onthose tables they kept the conditions pretty darngood.Art and Pat worked for a while, sorting the toolsand sporting gear. What about the crazy waysdifferent places rated players? Art asked Pat.The whole northwest rated players on a whimwith no real objective measures. They neverdid get it together to have a regional ratingsystem.Pat remembered, too, how on the local scenethe top players didnt have much opportunity toplay. Most of the events were for players whohadnt made it to that level of excellence. We lived in B and C Town, he joked. Only itwas true Portland was a major metropolitanarea where business was with the majority the B and C players. When road players camethrough town they pretty much cleaned up onthe A players, who were sloppy from lack oftough play. The top players were lucky to find one big localtournament a year, he thought. But credit hadto be given to some of the smaller towns forsponsoring open tournaments and bringing inA players when most of their local players wereB players.Good players had to travel and awful long waysto play, Art said. But you couldnt findsponsorship, so it was just way too expensiveto do it.They sat there in the basement, quiet for amoment, looking at Arts cue, shining in thediffused sunlight coming through the basementwindow, and reflecting on the downfall of oneof the greatest sports on the planet.Pat continued with the gloom and doom. It wasa curse to get so good youd be rated an Aplayer. The B players would purposely sandbagso they could keep playing in the B events whereall the money was. The phrase Catch-22would describe it, he thought. The moneystayed where the B players were, and the Bplayers stayed where the money was, so no oneever bothered to excel.Pat paused to open an old plastic container ofrouter bits. And then the weekly tournamentsstopped adding much money. It was like goingback to the 1960s... Say, Art, what do you wantto do with all these? Everyone uses laser now,so who would want these old obsolete things?Maybe someone will think theyre worth afortune, mused Art, through a mouthful of sweetbread. You never know.To be honest, Pat said, pulling a box of oldmagazines over to sort out, my interest in pooljust started to decline. You had to drive milesand miles for the nightly tournaments andmaybe bring home fifty to a hundred bucks. Andthen everyone else complained because youwere there. And the smoke was enough to kill

everyone in the place. The fun had justdisappeared.I remember that, said Art. You were prettydepressed there for a while.Yeah, but you know, I finally realized there wasjust no incentive to excel in the sport of poolanymore! You could go two hundred miles inany direction and still, every place you went youargued with people over what rules to play by,or whether it was illegal to play for moneyWhen it wasnt, Arthur finished. Seems likemost people playing pool really didnt know whatit was all about. They were satisfied justthrowing their money away knocking ballsaround and drinking. Remember the leaguesthat made pool league a huge business catering

to the casual player?Yeah, I do. Look at all these old magazines!Pat pulled out an issue of People with Bill Gateson the cover, proclaiming, Gates SweepsWashington Senate Race! I remember thatpool channel on cable TV, but I dont think I eversaw anything about pool in the regularmagazines or papers, did you?Not enough to swat a fly with. Bring that barrelover here, will you? Art leaned down andpicked up an old World Today magazine andbegan thumbing through it.Look at this. He jabbed his finger at a page. You havent seen cigarette ads in fifteen years.Maybe if they had banned smoking at pool hallsand lounges sooner, it would have helped savethe sport.Pat retrieved a steel-banded wooden barrel froma dark corner and rolled it over to the couch. He pried off the lid, and exclaimed, Ho! Ho!Ho! Found your Christmas stuff, Art!Ive had these in my family since the 30s, Artreflected, holding up a painted, star ornamentmade from a tin can. My grandmother madethis one.Pat pulled a Santa hat on his head. There wasone league that banned smoking at its nationalevents, he said. Its too bad their local leaguesdidnt follow their example. That was one ofthe main reasons hed quit playing. One nationalleague actually encouraged the addiction byaccepting a huge tobacco company as theirmain sponsor. Some called it the CancerLeague.Art sighed. My family had something to do withmy curtailing my play, of course. And it wastough sometimes to be out late and then be

sharp at work the next day.He pulled another magazine from the box.Look at this one Time Magazine, 2005:President McCain Ends World War III With ABang. I sure remember the economic disasterskept me on a shoestring budget. All the politicsand the bs, it was too bad people had such ahard time getting along with each other.Well, we sure paid our dues. Pat thought backto those early days when he played and lost awhole lot of games and money. But it paidoff, and I finally started to play pretty good, thanks to you, Art. He tipped the Santa hat toArthur. You taught me a lot, you know. I got towhere I could compete with any good playerfrom around the country road players andnational tournament players alike. Id probablystill be competing today, if conditions hadntdeteriorated so much.He reached over and pulled out a stack ofmagazines from the bottom of the box. Hey,look at these! These are BilIiards Digests! Theyoughta be worth something.Probably just to us, Art chortled. Everyoneelse is dead or just plain dumb.Let me see that stick of yours, Art, said Pat.Ive had enough of this stuff for awhile. Hetook the two-piece Schrader out of the case andscrewed it together. Nice cue, he said, sightingit. Still straight. Feels really smooth, too.I used to wax it with carnauba, said Art. Ikept real good care of it. I used that Q- cleanstuff on it, too. Remember that?Pat stroked the cue. Are you thinking what Imthinking? Yeah, Pat, smiled Art, the samething Im thinking, Ill bet.Good! Pat said, and hauled himself off thecouch. Lets go play some pool!end of Part Oneby Andrew Monstis, 2001, all rights reserved

Leo HancockI was tempted to make this short and tell you all just to call me. It sounded great at first but you would all be

wondering what kind of an arrogant fool is this guy. Education canonly help us all and maybe keep you from calling Uncle Fred, who used toreupholster furniture, to recover your table. A pool table is really not thesame as a piece of furniture. Hopefully you are not trying to get the rightenglish when you sit on your sofa. Many establishments have invested allot of time and money to earn agood reputation with their billiards playing customers. To keep thatreputation you need to invest in the quality of your table and itsmaintenance. There are quite a few individuals offering recovery andmaintenance services but not all of them understand exactly what it takesto keep your table in professional playing condition. While a seasoned

player may be able to see and compensate for the defects in a poorly maintained table, a table that is cleaned, groomed and has consistency of play will keep your pool players happy and they in turn will keep the cash boxfull.

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance...It might be location, location, location with some businesses except if you operate billiards tables and keepthem in good shape. Players will find you if they have heard you have great playing tables. Here are somesimple things you can do to keep them in professional playing condition.Vacuum your table, dont brush. Brushing your table is like sweeping your carpet. You push chalk, talc anddust through the cloth to settle on your slate, slowing play and wearing your cloth from the bottom up. This isalso why the head ball in the rack seems to sit like it is in a pit (or a mound of chalk dust). Keeping dust and lintout of your table mechanisms will also cut down on your emergency service calls. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum...Clean and polish your balls. You can use simple soap and water or put them in a dishwasher. Never use bleachor ammonia. These will yellow the balls. After you clean them use a little of what we call Leos elixir of lifeotherwise known as Pledge. Make sure you polish them well and remove any residue. Clean, clean, clean...Check your cue sticks. Worn ferrules and tips can really mess up your cloth causing miss-cues and tears. Investin replacing stick tips. Replace, replace, replace...Done on a weekly basis these things will extend the life of your cloth to almost double. More balls will be madeon the break, games will be smoother and faster making the game more enjoyable to play.

Nice Threads Man...I suppose that any article about table maintenance is not complete without a word about the playing surface. Ihave already explained how a proper recovery with a minimum of adhesives and fasteners, as well as a goodservice schedule of the table and accessories, will prolong the life of the cloth. There are so many differentaspects to consider when choosing the type of cloth that recommending one over the other here would not beappropriate. You really need to consider the type of play and personality of your clientele. The basic things toremember are to choose something with minimum shedding, that does not loosen up after a few weeks play anduse anything but rubber backed if you have league/pro players. Rubber backed causes the table to playinconsistently and slowly and contributes to fewer games per hour. It can suck the life out of your game. If youkeep your cues in good shape you shouldnt need the extra backing of rubber. Finally, dont choose a worstedwool unless you understand its tendencies first. It wears a lot differently than other cloths and can fool you ifyou dont know what to look for.You will surely find some folks who dont agree with everything I have explained here. Anything where there isa melding of art, science and style is bound to be that way. But, after many years in the business I have noticedone thing that is always true: Players will flock to a good table. How many times have I walked in to anestablishment to do a recovery and had people drooling around me in anticipation of playing a newly tunedpiece of equipment? To maximize your cashbox income, have consistent playing rails, high quality cloth and aclean and level table.

On October 27th at Hard Times Billiards in LosAngeles, the finals of the 2002 BCA NorthAmerican Artistic Pool Qualifier came down toa tight and dramatic finish with the winner beingMike Massey. However, the competition was

so intense that the outcome was in question until the last few shots. I definitely didnt have to winthe event, said Mike. A lot of people think that Im supposed to win it every time but I dont see itthat way!Tom Rossman, a sponsor of this event and Mikes acknowledged toughest American competitor, took second by a hair. Nick Mannino, from Shippensburg, PA came within one point of edgingRossman out of second on the final shot. And Ken Sarge Aylesworth, who started off slowly, stormed the last day finishing fourth. But the real surprise of the tournament was Rick Malm, aretired IBM executive from San Jose, CA, a newcomer to pool competition and a recent graduateof Pool School In Paradise (organized and run by Massey, Allison Fisher, Gerda Hofstatter, andPaul Potier) who studied and practiced hard for this eventhis first competition. Rick broke out ofthe blocks early, winning the first two of the eight disciplines to the shock of the other opponentsand was in close contention throughout. Paul Gerni, a familiar face on ESPNs Trick Shot Magicproductions, but who didnthave much time to prepare forthis event, won theSportsmanship Award for theclass that he showedthroughout the tournament. With the top two finishersgoing on to compete in theWPA World Artistic PoolChampionship in Oostende,Belgium on February 22 & 23,2002, Mike Massey had this tosay, Its really the thing of thefuture [Artistic Pool], the thingthat will really help pool. TheESPN Trick Shot Magic showgot the best ratings of anythingon TV in the history of the gameof pool.Indeed, the fans enjoyed the show at Hard Times Billiards, experiencing not only a seriouscompetitive atmosphere, but also the tremendous camaraderie between the players themselves.Despite the stakes at hand, each player cheered his opponent upon the making of a difficultshotout of pure respect.Congratulations to Steve Lillis and to his staff who staged and directed an exciting and memorableevent. Womens Calcutta High Fininshers:1st $ 125 Linda Carter2nd $ 45 Jo Woodward, Julie BurneyBryce, Tony and Amar (three young buddies who frequently travel

together), Amar was the only one to get too far, but was ultimately stoppedin 5th place by Glenn Atwell. Local favorite Atwell, winner of the last Q-Street tournament definitely had the crowd on his side. However, when itcame to the fourth place position, Glenn would square off against JohnDoherty, better known as JD from Seattle. JD is such a gentleman it isalways difficult to root against a competitor with such class. Atwell, also agracious sportsman, did what he does so well and plugged on through ina hill-hill sweat fest advancing to play for 3rd.Nick Spano was ready and waiting. The match between Spano and Atwellwas crisp and clean. One shooter had a slow, rhythmic style, while theother played with a faster, simpler style. The set seemed to go quick withAtwell landing on top earning the privilege to face Medina in the finals.Atwell was in no shape to face the fresh and sporty Medina. After hislong and grueling trip through the losers bracket, Medina made mincemeatout of Atwell finishing him off in one quick set.Gracious hosts and owners of Q-Street Billiards, Jeff and Kim Mishler, and Dennis and Sharon Blackwell, worked around the clock taking careof minor crisiss all of us knew nothing about, as is often the case when aroom hosts an event of this magnitude. I think I can safely speak for mostevery player in Oregon and Washington in saying how happy we are towelcome Q-Street Billiards to Oregon.

Danny Medina, Glenn Atwell, John Doherty, Nick Spano
